This is not a bad little place. I have been to fisherman's Wharf countless amounts of times throughout my life and am not necessarily much of a fan of the loud touristy attractions as I once was years ago However, my bf and I decided to take the ferry over this particular day to just pay this much visited place a visit. We were hungry but not staving so, after scouring over what place to reside at, this place happened to catch out attention. Nothing special, certainly nothing fancy- just a typical touristy seafood grub place that actually looked kind of appealing. The seating is all outside providing the always great people watching. They have a Variety of there foods presented in a glass case upon entering. The Jambalaya Shrimp and sausage soup with held inside a bread bowl looked incredibly appetizing and the big juicy burger displayed appealed to my bf. I ordered the Jambalaya shrimp soup, in hopes that it was not too spicy. Bf ordered the burger. My soup was actually quite tasty however, a little too spicy for my taste. So I actually asked if I could get something else. The lady behind the bar / manager did not hesitate at all and was extremely friendly and understanding. After poking around the Musee Mechanique, I came here for some chowder. One cannot go to Fisherman's wharf and not get chowder. Across from the fancy lit-up Alioto's #9 is this place. Fancy lit-up Alioto's across the street seemed just a bit out of my wallet's reach. This place seemed much more within my budget. The Chowder Hut is a no frills order at the counter, pick up your order and go sit outside and eat it kinda place. I do tend to like those. There was no line, and I walked right up, and looked up at the menu. Several items tempted my eyes, and seemed like they would tickle my fancy. But, in addition to those several items, they had clam chowder in a bread bowl, and crab clam chowder also in a bread bowl. The crab added a dollar. So I went with that one. I went back to find a table to sit at, and just as I sat down, I heard my number called. Isn't that how it always works? I walked back around to pick up my bread bowl of soup. It looked nice, a pile of crab sat atop the chowder, and the 'cork' of sourdough that had been removed was full and complete. I love that. It also smelled nice; the aroma of the chowder teased my olfactory receptors. I picked up some of their recycled, biodegradable plasticware, and went back to sit at the table. I tore off a chunk of bread 'cork' and dunked it into the bowl. I took a bite, and it was good. Warm and soft sourdough bread, soaked with the warm and creamy clam chowder. It was magical, and just a hair over nine bucks. Not too bad for pier-dining. After I finished up the soup inside the bread bowl, I tried to use the plasticware to cut the bread bowl into edible chunks. SNAP! Bread bowl won that bout. Determined, I picked up the bowl and ate it caveman style. It was really really good. But, eating a bread bowl soaked with chowder is not a neat thing. They have no bathroom, but their building is adjacent to the public bathrooms. I washed my hands of chowder, and continued my exploration of the area. read more

To warm up and recharge we ordered a hot buttered rum, a bloody Mary, and the crab chowder in a sourdough bowl. The hot buttered rum tasted pretty good, however the bloody Mary had too much lime juice. The chowder was ok, but the sourdough was definitely the best part. I wanted to be unique and different, so I ordered the crab melt sandwich. We all shared some fired pickles or "frickles". The frickles were absolutely divine, and came with a generous serving of a thousand island spicy sauce. We finished the entire basket of frickles (no shame)! My crab melt was sooooo good! It was the perfect size, the crab was super fresh, and it came with a heaping side of fries that were straight out of the fryer. My friends chowders were.. okay. I wasn't impressed, and was a little bummed I had taken them to this place for the sole purpose of chowder, when the chowder wasn't the best thing on the menu, obviously. I LOVE clam chowder! I'm not kidding... it's like I have an affair with it. Like I wish drive to SF just to have some clam chowder :) So with that said, I've gone through fisherman's wharf and tried every clam chowder that they sell there. Chowder Hut is by far the best. It's creamy, clammy, and delicious. Keep in mind it's exactly the same bread and soup as the Budin restaurant like 50 feet away, but it's cheaper and more relaxed. It's also the only place around there that has somewhere to sit down and enjoy the food AND they're pretty awesome about letting people just sit down and enjoy something they bought elsewhere so lot's of respect for them. I never miss a chance to stop by this place and all my friends that have tried it agree that it's the best clam chowder in San Fran. The ONLY thing that I would change is that they charge the same price for the clam chowder whether you want it in a bread bowl or a regular bowl (they just have it in a bread bowl on the menu). If they could offer the soup a bit cheaper for not getting the bread, that would be awesome and get them a solid 5 stars. read more

We stopped in about 1 on a Friday and their were about 10 other tables of guests. We sat for about 5 min before we were greeted. We quickly order our food of starter fried pickles, fried calamari and fried shrimp. Our pickles arrived at the same time our food did defeating the purpose of the "starter" . The pickles had good flavor but a lack of dipping sauce hurt the experience. The calamari was pretty chewy which I don't particularly like but the shrimp had good flavor and a good batter. The portions were adequate for the price but lacked any sort of decent presentation. Service was lackluster at best. I was completely out of water and eating my ice for the majority of my meal which really hurt my experience. If your looking for a great seafood experience look elsewhere but if your starving and broke you could do worse. read more

Such a convenient location! My husband and I ordered fries and two spicy fried fish sandwiches (and we made them extra spicy). I didn't know that would be a bad idea because they just stuffed the sandwiches with jalapenos. I ended up taking them all out. I didn't like the sandwich much either. It tasted really weird, I ended up not finishing it and gave it to my husband. I think it may be because I haven't had coleslaw in a fish sandwich before. But my husband loved it. He said it's the best fish sandwich he's ever had, and that's coming from someone who is not a big fan of seafood :/ The fries were good!
