Chubby's came recommended so I decided to give it a try during a business trip to Grand Rapids. The restaurant is fairly spacious and it was difficult to find parking on a mid-week night. The crowd was large considering it was only 5:30 so it seemed that this is a popular restaurant. In fact, it was hard to have a conversation with the very loud roar of other patrons in the dining room. The menu is very average, typical pub food. I chose the Chubbalicious boneless wings. The wings came out overcooked with some pieces inedible due to the hardness of the breading on the outside. There was way too much cheese poured over the bacon atop the wings. The whole dish was just a lukewarm, amorphous goo and not very appetizing. Service was underwhelming and not very attentive. Not sure why this restaurant was busy. Prices are reasonable for the type of food but not justified by the quality. read more

SERVICE: Service was great! The bartender was excellent. ENVIRONMENT: Patrons very politically obnoxious. The whole bar was at points literally yelling their political views; they also kept playing the national anthem on the juke box and had political networks playing on the TV. Your political views are fine, but they have no place in an alcohol establishment. Appears the owner embarrasses this, as evident by the news networks playing on the TVs, rather than sports, which would have been the obvious choice in a sports bar. My wife and I went there in April of 2025. It was not very busy and most of the dining area was empty. We were seated and then waited for a server. We could see several different servers going to and from other tables, but none of them stopped to take our order. After waiting for 15 to 20 minutes for even a drink order, I was getting a bit upset. Then another customer was seated at the table next to ours. One of the servers immediately walked over to his table to take his order. You do not want to know what I thought. Were we invisible? We stood up and left. We won't be going back. I told my wife that if I even entertain the thought of going back to please slap me. read more

Chubby's is definitely your typical sports bar. Lots of TVs and an after spot for lots of local sports teams (mainly softball leagues now that summer here). They have some really good drinks-specials which is why: we went on a Monday night and had $2 you call it's. Decent draft list in general too with some ciders. Service was fast even with it being a little busier and our server was definitely friendly and on top of things. The food was alright, we shared some chubbalicious wings which is loaded boneless wings and that was delicious and then we both got burgers. The service was fantastic, great waitress, food came out quick. The food, however, was miserable. Cold, bland/flavorless cheese sticks. The worst fish on the Cod entree/fish & chips I have ever had, it was just a greasy mess. The cheese sticks, french fries, onion rings, chicken tenders, and fish entrée were just frozen, out of a bag, and fried terribly (grease bombs). Also, I don't know how anyone could make a french fry taste bad, but the cook here somehow figured out a way to do it. The only thing anybody liked was my wife's chicken and apple salad. Decent bar-type place. It can be kind of loud at times. I've tried this place a few times and the food is okay. Not bad, but not outstanding. The service depends greatly on the waitress. It has been awhile since we have been here. We got olive burgers and wow the meat was so obliterated and had no flavor. Even the olives and mayo did not add flavor. The staff used to be really on top of it. I wanted another bee but the waitress never even asked or came back around to even get one. It will be a long while before I decide to go back. read more

Great service and food. Waiting area is a little cramped, but we got seated quickly. We like how they have tv/sports bar area separate from the dining room. It's a little noisy at times, but we expected that. Burgers have great flavor and a lot of menu choices. Highly recommend trying this restaurant. Parking is a little sketchy, though. read more

The prices are amazing and the food is good. The menu has lots to choose from so you can come back many times and not eat the same thing. The cocktail prices are awesome. I had a gin and tonic for $3.50 a bargain compared to the prices on the East coast. I had the ham steak dinner with a choice of two sides. I had homemade mashed potatoes, baked beans with an extra side of apple sauce. The ham steak was thick and grilled. A hearty portion. My sister ordered a tall beer and the shrimp and trout dinner. She ate it all. Definitely worth returning when we are in the area again. read more

Love this place. They updated the interior and it looks great! We started off with the cheese stuffed pretzels. Omg. Was also Parmesan encrusted. SO GOOD!!! Came with ranch and jalapeño ranch. I didn't realize this, and the server didn't tell us which was which. So I ended up having a mouth full of spicy my first few bites. I got the balsamic grilled chicken wrap. Very good flavors, and well wrapped (didn't fall apart while eating it). Fiancé got the French dip. Was loaded with sautéed onions. Both came with fries and ranch. And the ranch was house made... A+!!!!!! Service wasn't bad. Only 3 servers, on a Thursday night. And was quite busy. I like that it was seat yourself. Server forgot a few things, and wasn't the most attentive, but gave good recommendations. Will definitely be back. read more

I had the rebel burrito which is basically a BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich in burrito form. It was very good. The burrito didn't come with any sides but I ordered some fries which were good but nothing special. The food was a tad over priced but exceptable. The atmosphere was clean and bright. The service was good. My waitress was very good and friendly. I will be back! read more

Came here for the third? time last night and will never EVER go back. Bartender was extremely rude even though I tipped out 100% of my $15 bar tab. They didn't offer me a menu when I sat down. I sat at the bar and had two cocktails and played Keno for about an hour. I smelled food and was getting hungry so I asked for a menu, They then told me that the kitchen had closed (had JUST closed). I said "I wish you would've told me the kitchen was closing" they insisted that they DID already and argued with me about it (they most certainly didn't). This is a crappy, basic, strip-mall bar with very rude staff and ugly decor. I can't tell you if the food is any good or not! (I doubt it). Monelli's is super close though, and I have had excellent service there. I suppose that is the whole strategy of this place... to catch a few flies that didn't want to wait on Monelli's when it is full. AVOID. read more

The food was delicious, the Strawberry Mule was spot on!! With the hard floors and tables, jukebox playing, the one room restaurant an get quite noisy, so having a conversation can be a challenge. Our waitress was friendly, smiled and was helpful with making a final choice on entree. read more

If you're a blue collar worker, spend your money somewhere that's willing to treat you half human. Absolutely disgusting how the staff treated me and my wife. You shouldn't have dress to impress at a bar to receive decent service. I just got off a 14 hour shift, wearing work clothes and was treated like I was trailer trash. Much better options in the area and will never return. read more

Could've been an off day for the kitchen but they were out of regular fries so they offered us curly fries instead which we were totally okay with. Two people in our group got curly fries, and another was asked to switch to something else because they had also run out of the curly fries. I got the very last bit of the curly fries and it was about half of what the other people at my table had. Another one of us ordered wings but he did not get them until our group was ready to pay and leave. I will not be returning to see if this is how their kitchen usually operates. read more

We stop in about once a month to eat the type of food we remember growing up. For me it's the hot roast beef sandwich complete with gravy and mashed potatoes - what used to be a staple on many a restaurant menu is now hard to come by. The menu as a whole tries to be new and updated but much of the food is old school - in a very very good way. Fairly complete menu includes some dinners, plenty of sandwich options, good salad options (even a Chef Salad!). Full bar is on site, TVs in each corner. It's not a quiet place because of the wide open layout, but the food is satisfying, the portions are large, the prices are great and we've never had a bad staff experience. Downside? I'd love a more comfortable chair and if they ever expand, perhaps a way to lessen some of the noise level. We keep coming back. read more

And to make matters worse, there was something going on with the sewage system there when we visited. Our table was near the restrooms and you could smell an overwhelming odor of feces coming from the bathroom every time someone opened the door. The rest of the place seemed clean so hopefully that's an outlier issue. The waitstaff was polite and professional however service was quite slow. Our experience left so much to be desired.

Nate and I recently stopped in to try some of their new food menu and seasonal drinks. The new drink menu is Japanese themed, so we were excited since we went to Japan earlier this year. I got the alpenglow and Nate got the spicy margarita. Both were delicious and beautiful. We also got some happy hour snacks - the dijon sesame salad and the savory cream cheese wontons. Their happy hour is a great deal and I'd love to come back soon for that again. The salad was fresh and a big portion to share. The raw diced onion wasn't my favorite addition to the salad, but I did love the overall flavors. The savory cream cheese wontons were absolutely delicious - definitely very savory and crispy. I'd get these every time! The vibe inside at happy hour was pretty quiet but it can get packed as it's not a huge space. I am so glad that General Wood Shop is here and I'm looking forward to my next visit.

As a queer person, we have to protect our spaces by supporting them. The care that the staff lures into this place truly shows. The rotating menu, the affordable drink options, the ambiance and the way they truly take suggestions from their patrons. They have a new patio addition which has made the smaller spot feel larger aswell. Last fall, I came in on a whim by myself. Callie was my bartender (love), and they were deciding what to do with some Sloe Gin. Thus the "Femme Fatale" was born, there's something magical about watching a craft cocktail come together. Something even more magical about being able to NAME a cocktail at your favorite watering hole. GW is truly a beautiful addition to GR.
