What a great find! Home cooked food at reasonable prices. The service was a little slow, but the atmosphere and food made up for that. They had plenty of staff, just seemed disorganized. The macaroni salad was creamy and delicious. The vegetable soup and chili were fantastic too. I also had a cheeseburger, no complaints. Most people were there for the lamb.

Chuck & Irene's should charge an admission fee to enter! It's that fabulous in here and most don't realize it. This Northwest Indiana restaurant and hotel has long beginnings dating from 1947 when they were located in East Chicago, Indiana to their present home in Hammond (Hessville) from 1959 onwards. Seventy (70) years of the same family running this storied business. What a great success story! The interior is as colorful as the eclectic mix of patrons, real people, from all walks of life that come from all around to be a part of the fun, excitement and enjoy excellent food and cocktails. There aren't many places around these days that are as alive, genuine and original as Chuck & Irene's. This place is happening! The walls are adorned with countless photos of memorable days gone by, the booths are so period, mid 20th century in design and are just so wonderful to behold and sit in. It feels like a throw back in time of days much more simpler and easy with far less worry. Chuck & Irene's would make a great set for a Hollywood movie and this place should be listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. This place rocks and should be given appropriate attention. Yes, I was very impressed and you should be too! There's a back room for dining but most of the real action and the place to people watch is up front in the bar area. This place is clean and well taken care of. Do take a walk downstairs! I loved the 1930's, one piece double urinal and it's still working! Loved the sign that said NO men in the women's washroom! So not politically correct! Yes! Chuck & Irene's has food, fabulous food. Come on a Friday and enjoy a fish fry! We had calamari, perch, shrimp and frog legs, a Northwest Indiana delicacy. DELICIOUS! The waitresses are busty and friendly and the owners couldn't be more accommodating and nicer. Don't change a thing to your interior or exterior! This place is on a mission to preserve the best of Northwest Indiana bar life and dining. Long live Chuck & Irene's! This place is the real deal!

Classic joint, probably not for everyone, if you are ok with dark bars you will be ok here. We were traveling and stopped in for a late lunch, there is a separate dining room which looked inviting. However the dining room was empty so we opted for a seat at the bar. Nice old vintage bar displaying a bit of mystery and character in a neighborhood that is known as Hessville. I had to try the Breaded Tenderloin Sandwich, it was ok but appeared to be a processed patty. I do have to say the bun was toasted very nicely. My friend was not very impressed with the beef sandwich, I think it was supposed to be an Italian Beef, we are probably a little spoiled with easy access to fantastic beef sandwiches here in our Chicago neighborhood. However the Onion Rings were fantastic, these were really special. Prices were more than reasonable and I would love to sample some of the other menu items.

And yet I had the best chilaquiles, the best biscuits and gravy and the best breakfast taco of my life here all in the same sitting. Everything I had was an intentional and successful refinement of a North American classic. Best brunch ever. The owner was working. He's charming, interesting and very intentional about his cuisine. It shows in both the product and his discussion of it, which he offers freely. The other staff were also very attentive, wonderfully friendly and extremely helpful. The space is exactly what I'd expect given the food and people in it: charming, eclectic and comfortable. They also have regular live music. I haven't been back for that yet. Given how outstanding everything else I've experienced here was, I'm sure it will be top notch. Absolutely come here. You'll be back, too.

Lovely flooring- and the ladies room had a beautiful fireplace. Really! I'd go back with a "sprint" in a moment. (In regular non-bike vernacular meaning "I'd go back in a heartbeat!")

The menu covers breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner, with what you want when you want, freshly prepared. I ordered a Mexican omelette with jalapeños on the side, and it was bursting with flavor. Today she decided there was no way they would be able to mess up her order so we ordered from here again. And of course it was messed up. She gave up meat for lent and ordered fettuccine Alfredo and they added chicken even tho she specifically said no chicken. Then my omelette the cheese wasn't fully mixed into the eggs so 3/4 of the eggs had no cheese and then I had a clump of cheese at the end. And the worst was the salad it had a hair in it and bad cucumbers. I get it mistakes happen and stuff so we decided to ask for refunds for the salad and Alfredo since those were inedible and they said they can give us new food or store credit. Honestly I don't ever want to eat there again with that poor customer service to not issue a refund when they made the mistakes. That's just bad management.

No problem but why did I have to go ask after waiting 15 min for a drink when the place had about 11 people in it? It was my first visit to Johnel's restaurant. It was packed in there because they had an inhouse generator that kept the place open for business. It was like Brookfield zoo in there, very crowded and it appears some the animals escaped captivity and came here for breakfast. My breakfast was adequate but nothing above and beyond. The ham was thin, with burned areas and not off the bone as I like it, but oh well. The coffee was bitter, I probably could have scrubbed and cleaned a frying pan with it. I was hungry, the price was right and I was satisfied. The service was good. My server was painfully pierced and tattooed and if the wind got a hold of her, she's look like a sheet of wallpaper flying down the street. There is no accounting for good taste in presentation these days. Johnel's wasn't bad but sure wasn't the best! All depends on how hungry or picky you are. Bon Appetite!

SCHOOP'S FOR THE WIN!…read more First time in Hammond, IN... WHAT do we eat?!? Schoop's is a local Mom & Pop close to our hotel and The Hammond Sports Complex, that had pretty decent yelp reviews, how about we sample the dinner yummies here??? Yelp directions are on point. Designated parking is available in the lot next to the restaurant which is definitely convenient for the customer! Thank you! Didn't have to wait long to sit down. Interestingly, there are quite a few booths with "decorations" on it, very cool for sure (Who doesn't like the Three Stooges and Lucy & Desi!?!), however they limit access to sitting in those areas, which is unfortunate because the booths have the best lighting compared to center of the room tables. Barbara was our server and loved her spunkiness! Note... you have to designate which free toppings (on bottom right of menu) you want on your burger/sandwich, so be prepared for that question! LOL! I was not ready and that elicited some hilarious banter with Barbara ;) Okay, let's eat!!! BREADED PORK TENDERLOIN: I read somewhere that the Breaded Pork Tenderloin sandwich, aka The Pork Schnitzel, was THE JAM in Indiana. Never heard of it in California so I wanted to see what this was all about! I'm in luck because Schoop's has their own version on the menu! When it landed I was like... Whoa! The tenderloin is bigger than the bun!?!! Nothing small about this thing! Apparently, this Indiana Pork Tenderloin/Pork Schnitzel thang can get even bigger but I was pretty happy with Schoop's option. The breading is Crisp and the tenderloin is not thin like a McD's hamburger, but more like a McD's Quarter Pounder. Meat is juicy and flavorful. Filling for sure. Paired with BOMB tater tots... GREAT INTRO to the Indiana Pork Tenderloin Sandwich!! SWISS MUSHROOM BURGER: Schoop's claim to fame is their Burgers and there are many props to that fame decorating the restaurant, even a "Top 10 in America" (CNN Eatocracy) claim! Now we gatz "expectations" lol Mushrooms are Wifey's Go To, so of course we go for the 'shrooms! Grilled onions to perfection, grilled mushrooms to perfection and a smash burger that had edges crisped just right and a flavorful center. Wifey rarely finishes a burger but this one was GONZO! Luckily she offered me a bite! Solid burger!!! TATER TOTS: PERFECT! Crisp on the outside, yet soft inside. Tastefully flavored. No greasy aftertaste. DEELISH! We doin' the big order next time! VERY EASY RECOMMENDATION! Nom Nom level is high! We would absolutely come back to sample more of the menu! Enjoy! :)
