Visited with my mother and brother on a Sunday for late breakfast/lunch. We were greeted immediately and allowed to sit wherever we liked. Server took our orders very quickly too. Based on previous (very old) reviews, I was expecting a larger menu. Not sure if it is just a weekend thing or if the menu is rotating specials. There was a whiteboard with the specials and the sides available and also a printed menu that only had 2 entrees listed. I went with the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes, Mac n cheese, and green beans. Our orders came out super fast, which was great! Food was pretty good, reminded me of Cracker Barrel especially with the decor. Special came with a choice of 3 cakes and I settled on the butter pecan cake which was yummy! Not sure we will be back unless there is a more full menu on other days but otherwise it was a decent experience. read more

My colleague and I meet here once a quarter for lunch. The service is fantastic - friendly and fast. The food is always hot and good. You may think you are going to a motel because of the signage and it definitely doesn't look like a restaurant at first glance. When you walk in it is very much like having family dinner at your grandma's house. If you like meat and three places you will love Chuckwagon. I was a bit disappointed the day we went because they were out of salads (which was what I wanted) and fish (which was my backup). I opted for the grilled chicken sandwich which was just ok. Two small grilled chicken tenders that were a little over cooked on a bun. My husband had chicken and dressing which he said was a little dry. His veggies (corn, green beans and Cole slaw) were all good. He also liked their sweet tea. I don't think you will find friendlier people or better service. By the time we left the place was packed with what seemed to be locals and regulars which speaks volumes for an establishment. read more

It looks like you are walking into an old school motel. It's extremely rustic almost to the point it shouldn't be around any longer. The interior and the people working inside emulate that. My fork and napping had some sort of gross sticky junk all over it. The tea was very odd. I've never had tea that taste quite like this. I ran out about 1/4 of the way through my meal. I was never offered more. Fortunately I had a drink in my car. My food was all over the map. The black eyed peas had no flavor or seasoning. The okra had been sitting in the window for a long time. I'm thinking this was a bad day to visit this historic restaurant of the area and this review was done during covid but the menu that day was very limited to be expected and the specials were not my favs. No fried chicken that day just boiled chicken and rice My grilled chicken sandwich was frozen and cooked to taste like rubber. The meat was so wet it sogged the bun completely thru. Found this restaurant as we were passing by on the interstate & while the outside looks a bit run down, the parking lot was packed @ 11 am on a Tuesday & we could definitely see why. There was only 1 waitress for the entire restaurant but she noticed us & said she would be w/us in a bit & you could see she was very busy. Called in another waitress to help out. I had the country fried steak w/mashed potatoes & fried squash. The country fried steak (w/white gravy) was super tender (could have just cut it w/a fork!) flavorful & very tasty. The mashed potatoes needed little salt & butter but were definitely homemade chunks & all. The fried squash looked like it would be heavy but was surprisingly light & flavorful! Hubby had the hamburger steak plain w/turnip greens & a wonderful house salad. He said the hamburger steak was good but the turnip greens lacked pickle juice (whatever that means... I don't eat turnip greens). The meal came to ~$35 which we thought was very reasonable for the meals & portion size. Highly recommend! Don't let the outside fool ya! read more

The food is good depending on what day it is. My Husband and I have called in orders several times and they always mess it up even when you go back to pick things up to get home and find out that it's still wrong and always make excuses for there actions. Amber is the one that always gets our orders wrong, she always makes excuses and then today. She talked to me as if I were a dog. Screaming at me that we needed to get it together because my husband came and we didn't even know what we had ordered. She was so disrespectful, screaming and yelling so I screamed back. My husband and I were staying at Wess/Hilco (he drives a truck) and we had a friend who lived a half hour away that wanted to meet us for dinner. This was the closest restaurant with the best reviews so we decided to check it out. We almost passed it. It's kinda hidden away next to a motel very close to the I75 overpass at 41. Our friend's ninja driving skills got us in just fine there at the last minute. I had the country fried steak per the recommendation of Christi B below. Excellent decision. It was served with gravy, real mashed potatoes, green beans and a roll. Delicious. My food came out before my husband's and our friend's and my mister decided to start "taste testing" my food upon delivery. I thought we were about to fight over the fork! My mister and our friend both ordered a cheeseburger with fries. Both guys thoroughly enjoyed their burgers. I snagged a bite of one (fair is fair, right?) and it was indeed tasty. I had intentions of dessert but the servings were large enough that I barely finished my meal. Adding more food was simply out of the question. The older guy that served our food (and cooked it to my knowledge) was laid back, friendly and quite humorous. He checked on us frequently and made sure our experience was pleasant. Great southern hospitality you would/should expect here in the deep south. Definitely a hole in the wall with an interesting atmosphere. A lot of Route 66 decor decorates the walls. There are both tables and booths. You choose your seat when you walk in. I will admit it looks a little sketchy from the outside. Reasonably priced. My son had all you can eat catfish and it was very salty. I had the chicken fried steak and it was uneatable. The gravy was a thick flour water bland concoction. The green beans were equally as gross. Overcooked and extremely salty. It took a very long time implying the food was cooked to order. The staff said they were out of several items on the menu. Great little southern restaurant with great southern hospitality. When I arrived, there was only two other customers there and only one old man running the whole restaurant. He gave us a hand written menu that had 4 plate options. The C.F. Steak plate, the turkey plate, roast beef plate and the veggie plate. The veggie plate was 4 sides with a bun or cornbread, coconut cake or chocolate cake. The other plates were your meat and 3 sides with the cake, roll or cornbread. I had the roast beef plate with mashed potatoes, Mac and cheese, green beans, a roll and coconut cake. He gave us our dessert first and said "welcome to the south, we eat our dessert first." This place was amazing... Like eating at Granny's! My husband and I had the special for 9.95- a meat, three vegetables, roll or cornbread, cake, and beverage. The squash casserole and creamed corn were my favorites. My husband loved the slaw! We each enjoyed the turkey and dressing AND the chocolate cake. We were heading home from Kentucky and this was the closest nonchain restaurant. We enjoy trying local places and quickly decided to take the chance. We came on a Saturday night and we were the only customers. At first that made us wonder if we had made the right choice. The owner greeted us and we spent the next hour or so feeling like we were having dinner with friends instead of a restaurant. We ordered chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and green beans. It was seriously good food. We could see the potatoes being beaten with a mixer just like my grandma taught me. Delicious. For dessert we got a piece of coconut cream pie to go and it was really good too. Next time we are in town we will be back. We hope others will visit too. For a meat and three type place in the small-town south, it's a bit pricey ($10 for meat, bread, 3 sides, and a piece of cake), but the food was excellent and it was a LOT of food. It's a little hard to find by GPS, but it's at the Hwy. 41 exit on I-75 at the intersection of 41 and Soldiers Pathway.
