Great food, excellent service - large portions. Traveling back from Los Angeles to the Monterey Peninsula, we decided to stop and give this place a try while passing through Paso Robles. The interior was spotless - very clean. We were immediately greeted and offered a place to sit. Our server took our drink orders and provided chips and salsa for us to start with. We ordered the enchiladas plate, a pork sopes (ala carte), the chicken & shrimp fajitas, and another combination plate. Everything came out extremely fresh and hot. All of our plates were delicious - we also enjoyed the jamaica and piña agua frescas. I highly recommend giving this place a try. As mentioned - their service is excellent. Poor us!! My granddaughter, River and I were just denied access to our very favorite Mexican restaurant (La Mexicana, Paso Robles California) because I had my legally certified Service Dog with me. Great lil spot in Paso Robles. We walked in and quickly greeted. Server whom may be owner served us quick our drinks and chips and salsa. Another man came to take our order and answer questions about the menu. We ordered the Menudo and New Mexico enchiladas plate The mendo was so great with the flavors. The bowl we ordered came with pata. The ratio of hominy and pork was perfect. The flavor had a nice chili red taste with addition to the cilantro and onion mixture which I added. This is one of the Best menudo bowls I've had this year.( Really probably the best to end my year)I'm so glad we found this little spot but I do want to share with the world because they deserve your presence. The enchilada plate was good also the chili red sauce was light mild flavor not New Mexico fire flavor. Seemed to be the style rather than chili The beans is what I chose for the side. They were nice flavored smashed refried beans. We had salsa and chips which came as we sat down. The chili for that was a bit thicker more red with a bit of kick not hot at all but the expectation that you will not be sad with. This place was so good we wanted to go back the next morning but knew we had a brunch to go to. Please stop by the Family restaurant is Super Friendly. Good! * It's painted Mexican flag colors, and very festive * Long and wide menu with everything classics in your dreams * Great and friendly service It was difficult to make a decision, but I went with my staples (as well as how I initially judge a place), plus I wanted enough for lunch the next day. * Shredded Beef Taco [$3.50, 4.0 stars] -- extra crisp shell with excellent shredded/chopped beef. I liked. The shell was fried beforehand, so wasn't warm, but still very good. * Mexican Grande Burrito w/Chile Verde [$18.95, 4.5 stars] -- absolutely HUGE. I ate 1/3 of it (along with the above taco], and took the rest home -- delicious! After many years of going to La Mexicana, I guess I had better do my review. First off, this is the go to in town if you want good quality Mexican food. They always come through with good sized portions for the price. The service is always great. I always feel welcomed and taken care of as a customer. They just did a small remodel and the place looks great. I can't say that I have ever had a bad meal here either. A small Mexican restaurant that feels family owned and operated. I think there are a lot of classic combo platters here, but I can only really speak to the breakfast menu since we came here early. There's also a pretty good selection of beers and wines from what it looks like. The service is great and attentive. Going to this place for breakfast before a big annual beer festival is kind of a tradition for my buddies so I tend along this time. Part of the reason they like it is because they enjoy the food and the place is not crazy busy like other places in town during this time. I ended up ordering the chilaquiles and a coffee. Definitely a nice hearty meal prepping my stomach to ingest tons of beer later on in the day, haha. The parking was super easy to find, but I ended up actually walking here from the motel I was staying at which was just three blocks away. a great place and a great find on the edge of the downtown area. read more

Best Menudo on the Central Coast and Worth the Drive Every Time! We absolutely love La Mexicana Restaurant, it gives us that "Restaurant: Impossible" comeback story kind of pride, like we're rooting for our own hometown gem. And let me tell you... their Menudo is hands-down the BEST on the entire Central Coast. I've tried menudo up and down California, but nothing comes close to the flavor they serve here. The corn tortillas are homemade, soft and perfect , the kind that make you close your eyes after the first bite. The service is always wonderful, warm, and welcoming. Even when we're traveling and coming in from Bakersfield, they still take care of us like family. We've even waited outside for opening time, just to make sure we get our fix. Whether it's curing you from the night before or just warming your soul, this menudo carries you back to life. I haven't tried every dish on the menu yet, but everything I have tried has been extraordinary. If you're anywhere near the area , or even if you're not . La Mexicana is worth the drive. Stopped in there for lunch today with my daughter. We got the lunch special, which was two tacos and beans and rice. We both took a bite of our taco and spit it out. It was disgusting. The lady asked me how everything was and I told her that the tacos were horrible and she did not even ask to give me something else or to take it off the bill. Will never go back to this place. Very Good Mexican Food. Were were passing through Paso Robles and stopped to eat at La Mexicana. From the outside this place looks very unassuming. But you walk inside and its nothing but vibrant colors and good Mexican food! We were sat immediately - made it before the dinner rush - and they gave us Chips and salsa right away. We ordered a burrito, Chili Colorado which was tasty, and beef fajitas which were enough for two people!!! I dont think ive ever had a larger portion of fajitas before! We came in on a Friday night. The ambience is cute. They fit a lot of people for the amount of space. Service was good if you are a large group. One gentleman left saying he was waiting around for 45 minutes to order and never got his order taken. WOW. We had just got there but by the way he was upset, I'm sure he had a bit of a wait. The food: four of us ordered enchiladas of different filling; they all were too salty. The rice was under cooked and the beans were so so. The chile relleno was bland. Overall the food was mediocre. Visited 18 July 2022 This is actually my second visit. I was probably recovering from unintentional gluttony why I never wrote a review. The portion sizes are huge!! HUGE!! The table is provided chips and salsa as soon as you sit down. The salsa isn't spicy but it is flavorful. I'd suggest avoiding it at all cost to save room for your meal!! Seriously!! On my first visit on 6 July 2022, I had the a-la-carta beef burritos - $16.95, because I thought it would be smaller than the "giant" burritos. It was MAYBE half inch small. Lol. I also ordered a side of guacamole - $5.95. That was was also a huge dollop that I ended up sharing with the rest of the table. During my 18 July 2022 visit, I wasn't hungry hungry so I thought I would order something small from the Aperitivos (appetizers) section...boy was I mistaken. I got the Asada Quesadilla - $14.95. There was a ton of cheese in it; I would have preferred a little kess. Also, the portion was huge and I ended up taking some to go. I also had a regular margarita - $8.00, but it seemed watered down. There are also local beers $4.00 and imported beers $5.00. There are a few on tap and other bottled beers. There is also a small selection of wines. The food is excellent for an appetizer we had their shrimp cocktail which was prepared more traditionally Mexican. I had their chili rellenos which were very good and come with 2 in a nice red sauce. My husband had the fajitas with homemade flour tortillas. The service was very nice. The restaurant was clean, comfortable, and colorful. Definitely a do over if you are wanting Mexican. read more

What could improve?? How about learning how to make a bacon cheeseburger for a kid where the bacon was not dried out and looked like sxxt. The French fries were soggy and the bun was essentially glided to the meat. What a joke. There were SIX employees there but only ONE did any actual work. The others- especially the lone female just meandered around basically doing nothing. Because of that we had to wait and wait much too long just to get our order going. Stopped by here with family after a meeting on Sunday night, about two plus weeks ago. Nobody was disappointed in the food, excellent taste and how it was presented. Recommendation would be to try the platter that costs about $24 or so, with taquitos, quesadillas and so on. This unassuming traditional Mexican resto hits all the right notes. My GF and I stopped in after a morning e-bike ride through the wine country and brought our appetites. She ordered one pastor and one shrimp soft taco and loved both. The pork in my carnitas burrito was lightly seasoned, tender and delicious. Tortilla chips were warm and delicious, served with a great salsa with just the right amount of kick. Neither of us had one, but the margarita that walked by looked delicious. Lunchtime and the two of us ordered a Carne Asada burrito and the #1 Cheese enchiladas. As Mexican style food goes, comparing it to Southern California's - I would have to give it a 3.5. The burrito was 1/3 rice, 1/3 bean and 1/3 Carne, as described on the menu. I will not order another one in the future. The #1 did not look that interesting. I will give it a 5 for the decor and background music, both giving it the place a an authentic feeling, how I would like to dine in Mexican Restaurants. The service was great. All of the employees were super friendly. My father received a beer on the house. The inside is spacious and has plenty of different sized tables. The chairs are beautiful! Free chips and salsa, and they do refills as well. I love that about this place, because not many restaurants still do that. The chips were too salty for my taste, but the salsa was good. Everyone's rice and beans were also too salty, I personally could not finish eating them, but some of the people I went with didn't mind it. The green enchiladas just have the sauce from their chile verde, not a special green sauce made specifically for the enchiladas. Not bad, but nothing special. The Chile rellenos was very good! The veggie burrito was great, as well as the fajitas even though it was a little too salty as well. I think it's a good place to go for some quick Mexican food, because although it was very busy, they brought the food out quite quickly, and would refill our chips and salsa as needed. It's also good for the whole family and larger groups. It is very casual, and has authentic decor. This place is easily missed, circled the block twice before finding. Very friendly service. The strawberry margarita is made with wine only. I enjoyed my asada taco salad. There's no dressing and the guac, sour cream mixed with beans makes a soupy mess. The meat was good but hidden with all the sauce. My bf got the giant burrito with Carne asada. Def will return. Today husband and I were in the area and decided to try La Mexicana. It doesn't look like much of a restaurant yet when you walk in, it's huge. My shrimp enchiladas were very good, not spicy and the rice and beans were good although I do miss the carrots and peas in the rice. My husband ordered the shrimp with garlic and onions. He enjoyed it. As you can see from the picture, the shrimps are huge. On the menu it mentioned that vegetables and a salad are included with the meals. I asked the waitress about it and she said that the customer has to ask for it otherwise they don't serve it. Um, I've never heard this before and either has my husband. I have to point this out. If the menu states that it comes with vegetables and salad then the restaurant needs to honor it no matter if the customer ask for it or not. If La Mexicana doesn't want to serve the salad with the meal then they have to change the menu. So I feel it's like getting away and cheating the customer if you don't serve what you state on your menu. My husband would give his meal 5 stars and I give mine 4 stars but I knocked off 2 stars because it is important to be fair with the customers. So there are other places to eat and we will try then when we are in the area again. read more
