The restaurant is what I would expect for a small local Vietnamese place, with straightforward service and a no frills environment. We had never been there before and we just went up to the counter, paid for the buffet option, and went to grab food in the other room. The buffet also comes with a can of soda/bottle of water. Everything we tried from the buffet was pretty good! I am trying to eat less meat and love having a good vegetarian/vegan option. Incredible service at the register. The employee walked us through the menu and ordering process, answered all of our questions and helped us make our final decisions. I ordered a tofu banh mi. They weren't as crispy and fresh as I would've liked but they were free so one can't complain too much. The banh mi was absolutely delicious. One of the best things I ate during my nine days in Seattle. The spring rolls were fine as were the sesame balls. A couple of notes: after the initial ordering and delivering of our food, we were pretty much left to our own devices. We got our own waters, cups and napkins. Also, the area around the restaurant doesn't appear to be the greatest. My family and I (wife, two elementary aged kids) walked here from the train station and were fine but probably not something I'd do later at night. My partner found this spot for our Seattle trip and I couldn't have been happier. Located in ID near Chinatown, the area surrounding it may leave much to be desired (but no different than any other large city). However, this gem of a spot became one of my favorite places to eat while in Seattle. To start - BEST vegan banh mi I have had in my plant-based ventures. Most banh mi shops will offer a standard, dry tofu banh mi as their only option. Here you can pick from a variety of options with or without mock meats. I went with their Sesame Beef Banh Mi ($8) and not only was the price great compared to California, but the bread was toasty, the spread was fantastic (esp as it's vegan), and the beef was great. The sandwich was bomb and I've yet to find a better spot to get banh mi. We also shared their Banh Xeo ($15) and Hu Tieu ($12). I haven't had banh xeo since going plant-based and this one was a great re-introduction. The crepe batter was super crispy and the fillings used tofu and mushrooms instead of meat. I loved the flavors and together with the vegan fish sauce was a great appetizer. It came out last since they had to make it fresh. The Hu Tieu had a wonderfully flavored broth with noodles and veggies. It was a fantastic bowl of noodles to enjoy on a cold Seattle day. When you check in on Yelp, you also get a free eggroll. They were kind enough to give us two so that each of us could enjoy this tasty treat. With kind service and amazing food, I absolutely fell in love with this Mom & Pop show and wish I could go back to it more and more. They served tofu in at least eight different variations, all of them incredible. Where do I begin? I was first recommended this joint by my bestie who's a vegan and frequent this place like it's her holy land. We finally made it here on a weekday afternoon, greeted by the nicest woman behind the counter (the owner herself). We immediately fell in love with her demeanor. She asked us if we had been there before and we told her we were recommended by a vegan friend who's not even Asian. And she said please thank her from me. We proceeded to ask her what she would recommend us to get as first-timers. She said that her Spicy Tofu, Spicy Chicken Lemongrass. and Barbercue Pork are the most popular ones. She went on to explain that all of her ingredients are homemade and made from scratch by her. Knowing we would be sharing half of each banh mi, she offered to slice the sandwich for us. Very thoughtful! We got the Spicy Tofu and Barbecue Pork, plus she gave us a couple of vegan egg rolls to try. Jesus, the foods are all freaking delicious!! The bread was toasty warm with crunch and crust, and the topping inside was amazing. The barbecue pork was sweet and flavorful, while the Spicy Tofu was fantastic with the kick from the spices and chili. While both of them were very good, surprisingly I personally preferred the Spicy Tofu more. Both banh mi came with cilantro, cucumber, sweet and sour radish carrot, jalapeno, chili sauce, homemade vegan mayo. They also have a vegan buffet. Parking is plenty in their private lot. Just to be clear I'm a perpetual meat eater, but ChuMinh is a legit place to get your meatless Vietnamese food fix - if a carnivore like myself likes it, that just shows how awesome this place is. Currently open for dine-in, people usually line up outside to order take-out. My go-tos, for take-out, are the banh mi sandwiches and Vietnamese iced coffee. Because they don't have food items containing animal products, the Vietnamese iced coffee is sweetened with coconut milk. Still good in my book. This place has some serious issues with their online ordering system. I placed an order at 7:19pm, knowing they close at 8. Got an email confirmation and a receipt. Showed up at 7:45. They were closing, and there was no order for me. I showed the guy my email confirmation and receipt. He told me they'd rejected the order. They were closing early today, he said. He pointed me to my name in their system alongside a "Rejected" status. I told him I hadn't received news of this rejection, and asked if they had planned to share it with me (would have been nice to know before I drove from West Seattle). No real answer, or concern. I also told him my card had been charged. "You'll see a refund in the next few days." So they'd had no problem taking my money and sending an email confirmation (as of this review, I've paid for this order and haven't been refunded). Again, no real answer. No apology, or even acknowledgement that I'd been inconvenienced. The thing is... this isn't even the first time they've done *this exact thing*--it's the third. This place is very unassuming and the area can feel a little uninviting from the outside, but once you step in, it is very cozy and inviting. There is a buffet area immediately at the entrance with seating in another room. The food was so delicious, and everything is vegan but you don't even "miss" having meat. Everything is so flavorful. I ordered the "duck" banh mi at level 4 spicy and I loved the flavor of the marinated tofu skin combined with the pickled daikon and carrot which I think are house made. We also ordered the summer rolls for the table which were so light and refreshing with great texture mixes and perfect for a hot summer day. As great as the food was, I was even more impressed with the generosity of the staff. On Saturdays, they donate food to anyone who comes by and is in need, and while I was there, I saw an older couple come in and try to pay cash for some of the sesame dough balls and the staff refused to take their money. I love finding vegan spots like this :) I've tried the ($5.45 each) pork banh mih, mock duck banh mih, lemongrass chicken, and humbao ($4). The humbao ($4) was AMAZING and the vegan egg roll was perfectly crispy (needs sauce though, luckily I had some sweet thai chili sauce at home). The hum bao has a sweet bun around a tasty taro/mushroom/tofu filling. I wasn't the hugest fan of the mock duck banh mih ($5.45, the "duck" was tofu skin). I tried this place for the first time. I used Caviar to have it delivered to my work. I was so excited bc I grew up on temple food and I was hoping this would remind me of it. I got the steamed rice plate. I ordered vegan roast pork and meatballs. I got my order and more than half was rice with some pieces of roast pork and one meatball. It came with broccoli and green beans as well. The roast pork didn't taste like roast pork. It was still tasty, but I wouldn't get it again just because it didn't taste like roast pork to me. The meatball was really good! I would definitely order this again. I was surprised they only gave one though. I thought with that size I'd get maybe two or three.
