Side notes: Gourdough sits on a corner with parking spots that are not free. There's a pay via QR code so you'll need a phone or something to scan that. Boo for digital shackles. Next note- I feel like this is a low key meet up spot. Like the way they tried to make the first train cars on the MTA the singles car? There was a series of singles getting doughnuts and they were a little done up for the occasion. Who knows. Meanwhile, the rice was so hot it was still visibly steaming from what I can only assume was a microwave, drowned in a watery gravy I never asked for, next to the old cabbage with solidified liquid. I brought the plate back to the counter, explained the chicken was refrigerator cold, and asked them to reheat it. I'm writing this today with an upset stomach. I wish I could say this was a one-time issue. It's not. I've been trying this restaurant, on and off, for over 15 years, and I kept giving them chance after chance because I wanted so badly for it to be good. I first met the owner when he ran a food truck, before the restaurant existed. I was excited; there weren't many Jamaicans in Austin at the time, and I was happy to support one. The rice and peas was so bad I threw the plate away. Years later, I tried the restaurant location. I ordered curry goat, took it to my car, and found the meat flavorless, fatty, and poorly trimmed; basically inedible. I threw it away in the parking lot. I later ordered oxtail through Uber Eats: flavorless again, poorly prepped meat, and an actual rock in the rice and peas. I tried introducing the child to Jamaican food with one of their beef patties, and it was dry and flavorless. Yesterday I ordered the "safest" thing on the menu, brown stew chicken, specifically because I no longer trust myself to spend real money on anything more ambitious here. I still got food that had clearly been microwaved and reheated unevenly, served with a piece of chicken that was still cold. Are we really selling microwaved leftovers out of an established restaurant with a huge kitchen? Jamaican food is something our culture takes real pride in. This restaurant has had a decade and a half to get it right, and instead I've watched it consistently cut corners on seasoning, on prep, and now on basic food safety. I don't say this lightly: if you want real Jamaican food, this isn't where you'll find it, and depending on the day, what you're served may not even be handled safely.

I was hoping to treat my nieces and I to a sweet take-out treat at dinner. I looked at the menu ahead of time on their website and priced out what I would be ordering. I planned to buy 3 of the Traditional Churro orders with Nutella dipping sauce for my two nieces. According to the menu, my total amount of goods purchased would be $10.75 and with Austin sales tax (8.250%), it should total to $11.64. However, when the woman at the counter rung me up, she charged me $15.70. I paused and made a comment about the sales tax being too high and for a moment I tried to do the math in my head. Meanwhile, I went ahead and handed her my card because I HAD to get the churros no matter what (I'd already promised my nieces I'd bring them home to enjoy with dinner) and before I could figure it all out on my phone for peace of mind, she ran the card and closed the sale. I would have appreciated being asked if I would like to receive a receipt (which Square sales offer) because I wanted to double check the order for pricing to see why it was so much higher. But then she just turned the screen around and called on the next customer. I felt a little cheated and unseen, especially after voicing a concern for the high price. The churros were okay--nothing remarkable. I think for another $16 I can get a Churro maker off of Amazon and just make our own at home. So bummed. Ladies and Gents, I don't usually leave reviews unless I'm completely mind-blown. I'm so committed to this place that I practically go every weekend. You can immediately tell they put a lot of love into their dessert. I've tried everything on the menu and I must say that everything is amazing. My favorite at the moment is the Texas Comfort, just add the ice cream for $1, trust me it's so worth it. I'm glad that they have opened a North location, because now they are a short drive away. Probably the best churros I've ever had, and I've had a lot. The plain charros were excellent, very crunchy outside with a study middle, not too greasy and a nice mix of sugar and cinnamon. The churros were prepared fairly quickly and were served warm. They are served with warm chocolate drizzle on top and Dubai toppings with a very indulgent flavor profile. It was sweet without being too heavy. The churros were fresh, crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside. Was able to enjoy eating the dessert at the pink picnic tables as they provided plastic silverware. Their price point was a bit high so it also would be nice to have a half size option at a lower price point. I was able to eat my left over dessert, but it is not as good warmed over. That said, the lychee raspberry is a knock out of the park -- absolutely LOVED it! It's the perfect combo of sweet from the lychee with just a bit of tang from the raspberry, and the chunks of lychee in it are absolutely delicious. It was like $8 including tax for the medium so it's not cheap, but it's a good sized cup. They also sell larger sizes (like by the pint I think), and chocolate with interesting flavors that is award-winning, so lots to try! The lady working there seemed hot/tired that day, but she was nice. The ambiance outside is also nice, as long as it's not too hot, since those picnic tables can end up being directly in the sun depending on the time of day and it is HOT. There is a tree there though that sometimes provides shade.
