Who says you cannot get authentic Jamaican food in Austin? Not me! I was craving some Jerk chicken (been in a BBQ food coma) and decided to try Tony's Caribbean food truck...yes, another food truck. I am the most adventurous diner in our household. From speaking with Tony Jr. today, they also have a restaurant in Pflugerville. I ordered jerk chicken, which fell off the bones and came with cabbage, rice and peas and plantain. I have traveled to Jamaica a couple of times, this Jamaican food was the real deal. The jerk chicken was a bit spicey but not set your tongue on fire spicey. The rice and peas along with the cabbage was perfectly seasoned. The standout for me was the sweet plantain, spoken like a plantain connoisseur. The plantain was sweet on the inside and slightly charred on the outside...perfect combination. The only improvement would have been for me to get a side of plantain. My food was delivered fast and hot. Tony Jr. was super personable and friendly. There is seating in the center of the food truck park. You hear tunes being played in the background. The food truck park is at the core of East Austin in a semi-residential area. It was my first time having ox tails, and they were tender and flavorful. The food came out pretty quick and they have a few picnic tables outside to eat at. It was pretty expensive however for what we got imo, as one plate of ox tails and jerk chicken with rice, collards and plantains was around $30. You take certain foods for granted when you come from Miami and are not as easily found in other places and Jamaican food is one of those. I was craving some brown stew chicken and came across this place in my search so off I went. I went for Sunday lunch...it wasn't crowded. Place is big, plenty of seating and looked clean. Service was good & fast. Prices and amount of food also decent. The food was delicious. Tony's is in east austin with a shaded outdoor eating space and vibey music. There is hand sanitizer at the truck and with each order there is a cutlery set with one napkin. Very minimal interaction with the staff. I got the OXTAIL small plate for $20 which came on a bed of rice and beans and plantains. Food tour ATX led me to Tony's while in search for some Caribbean grub in the area. What seemed to be a quiet day for the food truck location, I was able to grab a meal fairly quick. Decently priced and nicely portioned, I went with the small oxtail plate along with a patty & ginger beer. Combined all three came up to $28. Overall the oxtails were tender and fresh, however a tad bit small. Tony's meals come with cabbage, rice & beans, along with plantains which made for a filling meal. Wait time was minimum, service was good. I'm definitely be interested in visiting the brick & mortar location to see the vibes. So disappointed that this was not good at all especially after traveling from Waco. Not fresh when I went, rice and pea smelled sour like it was old and not cooked the same day, mushy cabbage. I've also had their classic jerk chicken and it is devine - full of flavor, juicy and tender. Tony's jerk isn't just some dry ingredients sprinkled on the meat, it's like part marinade but sauce that really brings out the flavors of Jamaica. But after craving oxtails for so long, I was finally able to try them out on a Friday morning. I've had several people tell me that Tony's had some of the best oxtails in Austin, so I may have gone in with too high of expectations... in total I paid around $25 for the large oxtail plate (this price was not bad-- it's pretty much the average price I see at any other restaurant). Overall, I can't say I was super "Wowed," by the plate. The flavors just were not prominent enough for my liking. The oxtails were more oil based than a saucier broth. I think that the portions were good for the plate, but the overall taste wasn't my cup of tea compared to the other oxtails I've had before. I may go again to update this review. So the clerk begrudgingly gives me 1 piece of bread. I have been to the Tony's in Pflugerville a few times (and the food has been great) and this is my first time purchasing from the truck. However, I feel like if you're out of something that came with that meal I paid for I should be compensated in some way. It's a simple rule of customer service to compensate or be completely up front from the beginning! Have you tried authentic Jamaican food before? Check this out! I got the oxtail and jerk chicken combo plate. What is jerk chicken? Jerk refers to a style of cooking where the meat is rubbed in spices such as allspice (think pimento) and Scotch bonnet peppers (think habanero) and cooked over a wood fire. The result is a rich, smokey flavor with a kick. Addtionally, this was my first time having oxtail. Oxtail is similar to a beef short rib, but it's more tender and has a more "silky" gelatinous texture. What's interesting about the history of oxtail is that it used to be primarily a working-class cut of meat, but recently has became popularized and has now been promoted as "gourmet" thus increasing the price along with it (as well as supply and demand since cattle only have one tail, obv). This combo comes with rice & beans as well as sweet fried plantain. Fried plantain is a favorite of mine and when fried and eaten with the smokey meats, provides for a great light contrast.
