In my opinion Indian food is something that most places can do alright, but few places can do great. I'd rate this as alright, which isn't a bad thing. I got the lamb and it was ok. The lamb itself was so-so tender and had an ok taste. My biggest complaint would have to be the amount of rice given. I'm a fan of a lot of rice with my Indian food. The sauce was a little spicy but not to bad. To be honest, the beat thing about this place was the price. Indian food is usually very expensive but this was reasonable (full meal was $12 - included Naan and a salad which usually would cost $4+) I was about to give it 3 stars but decided to add a star because of the price. I used to come to chutneys regularly for the Nihari, which I must add is amazing. However, the rest of the entrees lack traditional flavor. For example, the chicken special is extremely bland. Nonetheless I would have continued stopping by for the tasty Nihari, and tandoori naan BUT the owner was extremely rude. His lack of professionalism and rude behavior towards me when I simply asked clarifying questions led me to never return. This was the worst Indian food I have ever had. I am so disappointed and unsatisfied. I ordered chicken tikka masala which came with rice and naan. Every part of it was bad. Cheap, quick and easy. I love Indian foods but lately I've fallen off the Indian curry wagon. People from my work seem to eat Indian every other week but I'm never feeling it when they're going. The menu is wonderfully varied for "fast food"- tandoor oven cooked chicken and lamb, various curries, flavored naans and numerous side dishes some of which you don't see everywhere (masala dosa comes to mind). The prices are cheap (a WHOLE dahi chicken tops the menu at $11.75). The food comes out quick, typically under 5 minutes for take out. And the owner/proprietor is friendly and always smiling. And always there. Chutneys has been around forever too. My only criticism in the past might have been that the interior was a bit run down but in the past year it's been redecorated and is much nicer for dine-in (I still takeout most of the time, though, for other reasons). Chutneys opened in 1984 and I started eating lunch here while I was working down the street at Marion Davie's estate which had been turned into a psychiatric hospital. Arif's uncle had just opened after he moved here from New York where he had been the chef at some famous Indian restaurant there. John Lennon, Yoko and Mick Jagger loved his cooking in NY and there used to be a collection of articles from various magazines that talked about it. There were also some great pictures on the wall from various local celebrities that raved about his food here but since they remodeled they were taken down. I miss the wall, it was interesting reading and Arif has said he would put them back up soon. I had a Lamb Boti and Chicken Tikka combo this time and added a small size of Chicken Tikka Masala for another $1.50. I suggested he offer a Yelp special where you can sample various items.So when you go in, ask Arif for the "Yelp Sampler Special" The TV adds to the ambiance with various Indian programs and music videos playing while you eat. I really wanted to love Chutney's and was so excited to try it. I lived in the area for years, but didn't get around to trying it until one Saturday afternoon, when I was looking for lunch to take home and remembered it was on my list. The first thing I noticed is that for fast food, the prices seemed EXPENSIVE. I'm not sure what's "fast food" about it except that it's in a small, fast-food style restaurant.... the food was equal in price and took just as long. I ordered a masala dosa, saag paneer, and a mango lassi. The dosa was dry, room temperature and didn't have much filling. Nothing like the dosas I fell in love with in India when I visited, and I wasn't expecting that, but this just wasn't good. The saag paneer in my to-go order came in a large soup-sized container and had 5 pieces of paneer cheese. I counted them. I didn't even finish it all because it was so salty. Good thing it's a little hard to mess up a mango lassi. Maybe I'll go back eventually once I get over my disappointment, but I did really want to love this place! read more

LA is downright confusing. Good Mexican, I get. Good Japanese, yeah, I can see Japan from my house. But good Indian? I'm starting to think LA's like a cultural coffee filter. People pass through it on the way to somewhere else and some of the grounds get stuck in random neighborhoods like whatever Pico and Barrington represents. Chutneys is delicious. Just hands down. It's very fast-food-y, order at the counter, sit down in vaguely clean seats and chow down. We had both specials, a beef stew and some biryani. Both were outstandingly greasy and delicious. By grease, I mean Indian food grease, which is enough butter (ghee) to make Paula Deen blush. The price isn't great, you'd imagine a fast food place to have fast food prices. Chutneys is a good and quick place to visit for lunch. The restaurant is small and seating is limited, however, their service is fast. Best for take out or dining alone/with another person but not good for large parties. They also offer good lunch specials for under $10. I like getting their Chicken Tikka Masala ($6.50) which comes with rice, naan, iceberg salad, and a small drink. I add raita as I can't eat Indian food without it. Parking really sucks here. They invited me to sit down & dine there while a basketball game played on the overhead TV. When I expressed interest in how they made the dosa & the naan, they tempted me nearer to the fiery oven. I even got to peer inside. Gas flames danced around a brick at the bottom of what looked like a metal barrel. I ordered a masala dosa. Then he used the outside of the ladle to spread the batter outwards in a circle until it resembled a crepe. He added a mixture of seasoned mashed potatoes, yellow in color. It's better than other dosas I've tried, less sour. The potato filling was comforting. The dosa perked up with the addition of the chutneys. I didn't care much for the dal or was it soup? I am spoiled by the Indian vegetarian food I've had in India, which was prepared fresh by the cook every meal (4x daily). Also by my friend's family members, of which there are many. Overall I would go back. I'm interested in seeing how their other vegetarian dishes taste. It's an easy stop on my commute home. Since the parking lot was full, I ended up on Pico Blvd., in front of Lin's Chinese Restaurant, which is free after 6 p.m. I decided to get it to go, so I took take out, or as they say in some other countries, "takeaway". One of my favorite places to grab lunch on the west side. I've been to this place many times and have never ordered anything but their lunch special 1/2 tandoori chicken plate. It's reasonably priced and very tasty. The dish comes a half chicken (halal) served on top of rice, naan, and some lettuce, onions, corn, and a soft drink. It's pretty fulfilling! Upon entering, you'll walk up to the register to place your order then pick it up when it's ready. Don't expect any other service. The food can take some time to prepare especially if you arrive during peak lunch hours (10-15 max from my experience). The only downside is parking. The restaurant shares parking spaces with other businesses such as a bed store, Viet restaurant, and Subway. There are plenty of spots to park on the street but they're metered. read more

As somewhat of a picky eater, I am glad I found something on the menu I really liked. The lady greeted us very kindly and was very helpful In helping me pick what I wanted. I have never tried Indian food, so I wasn't sure what I was in for. She handed me a sample of Chicken Tikka Masala, which was absolutely delicious. I was shocked as I have never had anything like it. My boyfriend comes here often as he works in the area, and recommended the Tandoori Chicken. I got the half chicken. For 8$ it came with several pieces of chicken, Naan, rice, and a corn/carrot salad. Overall I'm very satisfied with my meal and the service was really great.
