Let me first state that servers work their butt off - kudos to that team. Now onto the real review - whomever owns or manages this location is woefully inept. Not sure if they refuse to adequately pay their staff or just refuse to hire additional employees. They have 4 servers working. Yes 4. Most of the restaurant is shut down like an abandoned Chernobyl bomb shelter. They routinely run out of items, wait time exceeds 90 minutes, the poor servers simply cannot keep up. It's embarrassing to the point that instead of sending food back, I write this last ditch salvo to warn others of a failed establishment that is a shell of what it used to be. Seriously do NOT waste your time here anymore. There are a TON of locally-owned Mom & Pop places in Austin that appreciate your patronage and have enough staff to serve their customers. Man... so sad to see a staple go downhill faster than a fat kid in a boxcar racer. I get it, things get expensive, corners get cut to maintain profits for the corporation that owns the place now... but dang, can't even get togo orders right? The last THREE togo orders we placed were wrong. My wife does not eat meat and ordered a bean burrito add mixed veggies... it came with ground beef, no cheese and no veggies. The second time I ordered the Comida Deluxe with an extra crispy taco, add fresh onions to the enchilada... I didn't get the extra taco I paid for, I didn't get the 8oz creamy jalapeno I paid (out the butt) for, didn't get the sour cream or side of queso... and my wife got the bean and cheese nachos with extra cheese... they came with next to no cheese... to the point it seemed like the kitchen said, hey... screw this guy. It was almost comical.... but after waiting nearly 20 mins past my pickup time and getting home to cold food that was wrong or missing items... bye bye Chuy's. Only reason I give it 2 stars instead of 1 is bc Juan the bartender is an absolute sweetheart and top notch in doing his best to offer service that attempts to overshadow the decline in product, management and BOH staff. Ordered through door dash to my Buda location. Ordered the NEW! appetizer plate, Tex-Mex enchilada plate and Hatch green chili chuychanga plate. Took 45 minutes to arrive, but expected since it is a ways from Buda on William canyon. Still, none of it was of the calliber of mexican food I am used to. All of the food was more or less without flavor and more dried out than it should have been even allowing for distance. Strangely, we've not been to Chuy's until today. We hit the William Cannon location. I'm aware that there have been mixed reviews, but I am putting them aside to deal with just our experience in this location. First, they are careful about masks and social distancing, which I appreciate. We were seated well apart from other diners. All the staff wore masks, and we saw things being sanitized. As per usual with a Mexican food outfit, we got chips and salsa at the outset. While the chips might have been thicker, the salsa, which verged on pico de gallo, was wonderful. The onion and tomato flavors came through, and there was a perfect amount of kick (and we like kick). In fact, we went through our first little bowl in no time. Our server, Suzanne, brought us a second without even being asked. That's attentiveness. That's customer service. Suzanne was outstanding throughout the whole experience. The menu is naturally pared down due to the current situation. So there was not the overwhelming number of choices that there would be in an ordinary time on a Mexican restaurant menu. Nonetheless, the choices were varied. I chose the soft taco with beef. Suzanne offered the option of fajita beef, which I took. The plate arrived with the expectedly huge portions of beans and rice and two tacos each the size of Cleveland. My partner ordered the tacos al carbon, but the only difference between hers and mine was that she had grilled onions. Mine was excellent. The fajita meat, while chewy, was well marinated and flavorful. The flour tortilla was flakey but firm enough to hold everything in. I enjoyed the beans, though my partner thought they tasted slightly scorched. No complaints about the rice. Their guacamole was a little skimpy but very passable, as was the cheese. My partner was equally pleased with her al carbon version. We took two boxes home and had them warmed up for dinner. Suzanne even included a container that that excellent pico/salsa. This one star review is based on customer service, not their food. I placed an order online for their happy hour nachos take home kit. I was told it would be ready at 5:06pm. I arrived at chuys curbside at 5pm and texted I had arrived. I got a "we're working on it and we'll bring it out once it's ready" text. So I sat back and patiently waited. Not a single person mentioned anything to me until 25 minute later when I got out of my car and went inside to make sure I hadn't been forgotten. The employee responded they were working on my order. I told her I just had nachos - beans, beef, queso, and chips - placed into containers. I mentioned that I've watched many cars pull up, receive their order, and leave. She responded "they placed their order 3 hours ago." I kindly pointed out that I should not have been told 5:06 for my order to be ready if that wasn't possible. No apology. No kindness in return. Nothing. I waited back in my car. At 5:35 my food finally arrived. Opportunities for good customer service were present and all they would have had to do is act on them to make this a 5 star review. If they notice an order is behind, maybe offer a drink while they wait or go personally to their car and let them know it's running behind instead of making them wait and wonder. Would give this a zero star rating if I could. This restaurant has completely changed from what it used to be and after 20years of going to this restaurant I will never be going back. Ordered a buffet worth of food and was given an unreasonably small amount of chips to go with my large queso. I kindly went in to ask for some more chips and was met with the rudest employee I've ever experienced who knows nothing about customer service. It was pretty busy at night-had a long 30 minute wait. The chips and jalapeño sauce are amazing...I could eat that all day. The Margarita was very good - good mixture of alcohol and sweetness. There was no salt or sugar around the rim though. My quesadilla was also good but I wasn't in a hungry mood so I took it to go. I wish there were heaters outside so people could sit outside during this weather and decrease the line wait. After my dining experience today I won't ever go back. National tequila day and $5 queso so what the hell, went for lunch with a friend. I ordered my usual bean and cheese burrito. 4th bite- I bite down on something extremely hard. Pulled it out of my mouth and it's a quarter sized bone or possibly even plastic, Gray/bone in color. I put it on the napkin and mentioned it to the server. She immediately took the bone wrapped in the napkin away and to the kitchen. Manager comes and apologizes saying the chicken is kept next to the beans and it must've slipped. I said, sure it happens fully thinking something beyond and apology would be done. Nope. Bill came out and we were charged for EVERYTHING. Seriously!! The manager apologized but I almost broke a tooth. Like they could've at the very least comped the queso. Won't be going back. I think this is because of the eclectic and personal interior designs that show the extravagant culture and unique taste of Austin. The menu is loaded with calories as you can imagine from a Tex Mex icon. This location is one of the best and I typically sit in the bar area because it just has a really homey feel and is a little bit less noisy. It starts raining like harder and we ask to get on a waitlist to get a table inside and they said they can't because they're too busy. We suck it up and stay. There is so much about Chuy's that makes me want to hate it. The religious prayers on the silverware pouches.. the fact that its a somewhat huge chain .. and the fact that all the people I know who have ever expressed any love of Chuy's to me are complete douchbags. The whole Elvis theme/Tex-Mex theme doesnt make much sense together... I dont think Elvis ever ate at Chuy's so I dont even understand what they are implying with all the Elvis themed dishes. Maybe they are insinuating the food is so rich it can make you fat like Elvis.. I realy dont know or get it. I do know that there is some seriously good food to be had at Chuy's. The chips and salsa is great. The salsa is always fresh and chunky and the chips are crispy an deliscious. I always ask for a side of the Jalapeno Ranch for dipping.. its definitely one of the best ranchs sauces I have ever had the pleasure of dipping a chip in. The food.. the food here is what keeps me from being able to hate Chuy's no matter how tacky and trendy it is. The Carne Guisada Enchilada special is amazing.. The boom boom sauce is amazing and they will gladly put it on anything for you! My favorite dish at the moment is the Elvish Chicken... I know its stupid its called the Elvis Chicken but whatever. It's a cutlet that has battered in potatoe chips and deep fried served with your favorite sauce. My thing lately is to get it topped off with Chili Con Carne and Queso.. Chuy's also has great Queso! Its not that kinda queso where you feel like someone heated up a crock pot of velevtte and added some rotel but that I'm at a legit Tex-Mex restraunt and this queso is more like a chili filled gravy than fake plastic cheese kinda queso. I also love the Queso Compuesto option.. the only way I can think to make this queso better is by dumping avacado, onions, and meat in it. Oh the sides here are legit also. I get so tired of the same old spanish rice at every Tex-Mex joint .. but these guys spice things up with a super tasty green chili rice. The charro beans are great also and while I'm no fan of re-friend beans they do have some of the better refriend beans in town. So.. bury your coolness ignore the religious statments and stupid elvis jokes and go enjoy Chuy's.. it realy not bad at all. P.S. I tried to impress another waitress after being dumped by the first by purchasing numerous fish art off the walls, putting it on the bill and tipping her on the total...$340 plus, now, $2.50 Frozens... was invited to the Chuy's Employee Christmas party with new waitress and drank free Frozens, and was asked to leave...There used to be a picture of me with a Chuy's T-Shirt on at an Auburn Football game at the original store, probably gone by now... enuf said.. think you get my drift... Tequila and dating at Chuy's never really panned out.... However the food always did.. Back in the day, Chuy's was the only Tex-Mex for us gringo's, who didn't know any better... I still enjoy it... fried egg on my blue corn stacked chicken enchi's.. hell yeah.. good stuff... Free nacho bar.. absolutely a must especially in these hard times....the stage is set for the new store in my hood. I was very happy to see all the fish hanging from the ceiling, classic booths, Nacho Car Bar, and all the decor which is definitely Chuy's.. nice long bar so Suz and I plopped down at the bar, which had two patrons at the end and us. We wanted to just have a little sumthin sumthin so it was the best choice of seating. We sat down, and I was a little excited, all my old memories were flooding back, and ordered a Dot. We also ordered the classic bean and cheese nachos. Drinks arrived, as ordered.... another couple came in and sat to our left... we sipped our drinks.. Bartender came back, and I asked for chips and salsa. She abruptly told me it was behind me.. and that's when everything started going in the shitter. Service that is, not the meal. * She could of nicely brought me a basket of chips and salsa or at least mentioned that I could help myself at the nacho bar.. * The couple next to us order nachos and while we continued to sip our drinks, their nachos arrived, we still hadn't seen ours. Bartender forgot to put the order in..finally got nacho's.. ordered blue corn enchi's. * Two bartenders and to busy to help us. They were constantly doing their side work and forgetting that we happen to be there wanting another drink or a water, silver ware.. etc.. There was 6 of us in the bar area. * The icing on the cake, one of the bartenders starts talking with the father and son to our right... somehow this ends up with a glorious review of the other restaurant she works at. Along with recommendations what to order, when their specials are so on and so forth.. it just seemed so very odd that she would do this.. I mean, I get it.. but perhaps in a lower voice and simply come by and see me if you get a chance.. but an oral "yelp" review right there and then.. weird. We love Chuy's Happy Hour and usually go a couple times a month. We like to sit in or at the bar, sip on a few margaritas while we enjoy the nacho bar, queso, beans, seasoned ground beef and salsa. Don't forget to ask for the jalapeno ranch, that stuff more addicting than crack! We've been enjoying Chuy's since we arrived in Texas, back in 2011, but have only actually been back in the restaurant area once or twice.
