Although Chōwa Bowl is a small eatery with a limited menu, their dishes have a high flavor profile. We tried the Rock Shoyu Ramen and Beef Bulgogi Bowl and both were enjoyable and full of flavor. The interior has an inviting decor, but seating is limited. There are also outdoor tables along the side the building. The Rock Shoyu Ramen had a good amount of noodles along with three good-sized pieces of pork belly (albeit a bit fatty), pickled fresno peppers & shallots, topped with green onion, an ajitama, umami-rich egg and a sheet of nori. The broth was complex with the duck fat and togarashi; it is noted the broth contains pork, chicken and dasmi. It was excellent. Their Beef Bulgogi Bowl was quite good. It consisted of four char grilled filet mignon skewers (2 pieces per skewer), kimchi, shredded carrots & daikon, pickled red onion, avocado slices, over herbed brown rice and topped with green onions, black sesame seeds, basil and a gochujang glaze. First night staying in Morro Bay and I stopped here for dinner with the family. I ordered the poki bowl and the boys ordered ramen- one ordered the Shoyu one and the other Miso. Cute little place with lovely decor- very inviting. You order the minute you come inside. It's very casual and when you are done you put your empty dishes away in the back. If you order a drink it's self serve as well. The poki bowl was abundant and I got half rice and half greens, the cubes fish was fresh. I just wished couple of sauces were offered such as eel or teriyaki sauce, ponzu sauce, or spicy mayo sauce on the side. The sauces would have given it the extra life. Now the ramens....complete passes on both. Noodle texture was probably the best thing for both ramens. Both broth was too sweet and it didn't pass for me as a tasty ramen of any sort. I had the shoyu ramen, wife had the miso. The shoyu broth was legitimately spicy. Unfortunately it was sickingly sweet as well. It was a struggle to finish the ramen. Noodles were also overcooked. One piece of my pork belly was also very dry. Don't think I've had dry pork belly before. My wife also found her miso broth to be too sweet. It's the first bowl of ramen she's never finished. Chowa Bowl was one of our dinner stops this past Friday in Morro Bay, and overall it was a solid experience--with one slightly annoying caveat. I ordered the Morro Miso Ramen (without the egg to keep it vegan) and added extra tofu. The broth was rich and comforting, with roasted garlic, miso, and chili oil bringing a really nice depth of flavor. The pickled corn was sweet and Fresno peppers added a bright, tangy kick that kept every bite interesting, and I appreciated how thoughtfully layered the bowl was overall. BUT... let's talk tofu math for a second. The bowl normally comes with just one piece of tofu (about 3-3.5 inches), which already feels a little light for a ramen. Since I removed the egg, I added three more pieces for $4.25. Totally fine...except now I'm paying extra to replace something I didn't want in the first place. Meanwhile, my husband's poke bowl, about the same price was absolutely loaded with fish. I mean... I get it, but also... I don't get it. Why are those of us who don't eat animals always doing bonus round pricing just to get a balanced meal? All that said, the food itself was good. My husband loved his bowl so much he was ready to go back again the next day. Me? Came for lunch on a weekday and was able to get easy street parking right outside. You get a menu and order and pay at the counter just inside the door, pick up your utensils and drinks and find a seat inside or outside. They bring the food out fairly quickly and check back with you after a few minutes to see if you need anything. The food is really flavorful with generous portions and reasonable prices. We had the steak skewers, which were moist and juicy, 6 bites on 3 little skewers for $8.50. I had the Okie Poke, with avocado, carrots, ginger, pickled cucumber slices, and a good portion of tuna and rice with a yummy sauce. My husband had the pork belly ramen which had a really delicious broth and a good amount of noodles. I highly recommend this place for a filling, delicious meal. read more

The marine layer had rolled in so I had to order the ramen and while it was flavorful, I thought it was OK. It was really sweet for a shio ramen, with pickled fresno peppers and shallots that really just gave the broth a lot of sweetness. I figured there'd be some interpretation but it was pretty far from a traditional shio. It might fit the tastes of some but I was hoping for something more savory and comforting. The pork and the egg that came with it were solid though. The place is cute and quaint. The utensils and drinks are self serve, which is fine. Strangely, I was told it was self serve but the server decided to ask the person next to me what they preferred and serve them. Couldn't say why, just a curious detail. If you're Asian and want ramen, please do not come to this place -- it is not authentic ramen at all. I'm Asian and love Asian food, so I was really looking forward to trying this spot, but it was a huge disappointment. The restaurant itself is small and cozy with about six tables, and the décor is very cute. The staff was friendly and accommodating, which I appreciated. We ordered the Shoyu Ramen, and it didn't taste like Shoyu Ramen whatsoever. The broth was extremely heavy, overly seasoned, and tasted more like soy sauce than pork broth. The pork chashu was hard and dry-- no fat at all. The only good part was the noodles -- they were made well and had a nice chewy texture. My husband even said it tasted like instant packet ramen. It was so overpowering that we couldn't finish the bowl. We also ordered the Bulgogi over rice, and it was NOT Bulgogi at all -- just cubed meat on skewers. This should NOT be labeled Bulgogi! The sauce was spicy which isn't supposed to be. Very misleading and I recommend you renaming this dish. Once we got back to LA, the first thing we did was get real ramen to make up for it. There's a small parking lot in the back, and they have a self-serve drink station with a hot water dispenser, but you have to return your dishes yourself -- it's not full service. Generous amount of Burrata cheese, mixed greens, the most delicious roasted beets and butternut squash, shaved fennel, cherry tomato, pickled corn, shaved watermelon radish (so cute--looks like watermelon!), house pickled shallots, herb, black sesame seed and yuzu ginger vinaigrette. The Burrata bowl is the freshest salad, chock full of butternut squash, daikon radish, sesame cucumbers, beets, and the freshest Burrata. Wow! Similarly the poke bowl has fresh ahi and a nice sushi style rice with ginger, daikon and fixings. Only nit was a bit too much mayonnaisey dressing - could go 1/2 as much. I didn't have room to fit the ramen with pork belly but next time. It took a while to get the bowls out but we had a peek at the kitchen and they took the time to make it right, not simply fast. Was looking forward to trying this spot all week only to have the worst customer service ever! The short brunette working tonight (4/14) didn't even greet us and said "what do you want?" We ordered our food, she responded with "you know we close in 30 minutes." We also work in the service industry so we understand & offered to close out right away. She snapped back with "yeah you should close out right now." After she said that we immediately changed our order togo. She then rolled her eyes and walked away. Did not appreciate the attitude and unwelcoming atmosphere. She also had her AirPods in the whole time. In addition, there were a couple parties that sat right before us and after we ordered. The food part: I got the miso ramen and it was way too sweet with only once tiny piece of tofu. Despite that it had great noodles. We also got the bulgogi bowl, unfortunately it was just steak on a skewer but still tasty. The rice in the bowl was also super sweet, overpowering the whole meal which made it hard to eat.
