Chowa Bowl was one of our dinner stops this past Friday in Morro Bay, and overall it was a solid experience--with one slightly annoying caveat. I ordered the Morro Miso Ramen (without the egg to keep it vegan) and added extra tofu. The broth was rich and comforting, with roasted garlic, miso, and chili oil bringing a really nice depth of flavor. The pickled corn was sweet and Fresno peppers added a bright, tangy kick that kept every bite interesting, and I appreciated how thoughtfully layered the bowl was overall. BUT... let's talk tofu math for a second. The bowl normally comes with just one piece of tofu (about 3-3.5 inches), which already feels a little light for a ramen. Since I removed the egg, I added three more pieces for $4.25. Totally fine...except now I'm paying extra to replace something I didn't want in the first place. Meanwhile, my husband's poke bowl, about the same price was absolutely loaded with fish. I mean... I get it, but also... I don't get it. Why are those of us who don't eat animals always doing bonus round pricing just to get a balanced meal? All that said, the food itself was good. My husband loved his bowl so much he was ready to go back again the next day. Me? I was more in the mood to explore other spots around Morro Bay, mostly because I'm still side-eyeing that tofu situation.Delicious, but the protein upcharge logic is...a choice.

Inside - a nice little clean place.

Great little find in Morro Bay. The Okie poke is definitely generous in size - shareable for two. The miso ramen is good, a little on the spicy side which isn't bad. A lot of stuff in it, more than a usual ramen place. Overall a good find.

I enjoyed the poke bowl. The portion size was generous. The ramen was not much to my liking...could be because I've had one too many ramen bowls from authentic Japanese restaurants that my expectation is a bit high. We chose this place as it was the first we passed by with outdoor seating and available parking. You line up inside to order, they bring your order to you, then you clean up afterwards.

Straight forward - order at front, seat yourself, bust your own dishes. Clean and pretty interior. Even better ramen! Unique taste, charred pork belly. Kids ramen is same size without the toppings which is a bonus. Better dinners in that area.

Came for lunch on a weekday and was able to get easy street parking right outside. You get a menu and order and pay at the counter just inside the door, pick up your utensils and drinks and find a seat inside or outside. They bring the food out fairly quickly and check back with you after a few minutes to see if you need anything. The food is really flavorful with generous portions and reasonable prices. We had the steak skewers, which were moist and juicy, 6 bites on 3 little skewers for $8.50. I had the Okie Poke, with avocado, carrots, ginger, pickled cucumber slices, and a good portion of tuna and rice with a yummy sauce. My husband had the pork belly ramen which had a really delicious broth and a good amount of noodles. I highly recommend this place for a filling, delicious meal.

A very cozy and intimate place (although the music out of the kitchen tends to clash with the mellow in-restaurant music! Excellent ramen that is so delicious, it's become like a comfort food for me. Ordering off a small menu is easy, but whether it's ramen, rice / poke bowls, or a salad bowl topped with a skewer of your favorite protein, it's all delicious. Parking is easy in their small lot, or more than likely on the streets nearby.

Cute decor but food was a huge disappointment to say the least

If you're Asian and want ramen, please do not come to this place -- it is not authentic ramen at all. I'm Asian and love Asian food, so I was really looking forward to trying this spot, but it was a huge disappointment. The restaurant itself is small and cozy with about six tables, and the décor is very cute. The staff was friendly and accommodating, which I appreciated. We ordered the Shoyu Ramen, and it didn't taste like Shoyu Ramen whatsoever. The broth was extremely heavy, overly seasoned, and tasted more like soy sauce than pork broth. The pork chashu was hard and dry-- no fat at all. The only good part was the noodles -- they were made well and had a nice chewy texture. My husband even said it tasted like instant packet ramen. It was so overpowering that we couldn't finish the bowl. We also ordered the Bulgogi over rice, and it was NOT Bulgogi at all -- just cubed meat on skewers. This should NOT be labeled Bulgogi! The sauce was spicy which isn't supposed to be. Very misleading and I recommend you renaming this dish. Once we got back to LA, the first thing we did was get real ramen to make up for it. There's a small parking lot in the back, and they have a self-serve drink station with a hot water dispenser, but you have to return your dishes yourself -- it's not full service. Overall, cute space and nice staff, but the food completely missed the mark. I would not recommend this place to anyone looking for authentic Asian food, especially ramen .

Sooo good, first time at Chowa Bowl. I had the Ahi tuna poke bowl. Every flavor of ingredients came through, so good. I'll have to make it to the one in Pismo so I can support locally there. Very nicely done interior decorations and nice young lady/ I think she maybe owner? Small spot , seating outdoors too.

The outdoor seating is under a beautiful tree with a fire pit and space heaters which feels very cozy, laidback, & can also be a great place to take someone for a date night. We had the salted edamame & vegetable tempura for appetizers, & shared the itchy dragon & firecracker rolls. I had the shoyu ramen with pork and shrimp tempura which was wonderful since it was a cool evening. Everything was amazing and the ramen was absolutely delicious! During dinner we were discussing booking a restaurant venue to celebrate their graduation & our server overheard us & told us they had a small banquet room. It was a no brainer, he gave us (Niko) the restaurant managers number & after speaking to him I booked their banquet room. We were a small party of twenty and I wanted to surprise my daughter & fiancé by decorating the place with some flowers, simple decor, & a cake. I was worried since I was arranging everything from 3 hours away, but Niko and the entire staff at Kuma made it easy. I would highly recommend booking them for any occasion the food, service, and staff are amazing!

The broth had oil pools as the three slices of pork were fried. I have never seen fried pork in ramen. Other contents of the bowl were 1 tiny slice of the fish cake, 2 slices of the hard boiled eggs, overcooked noodles, several strips of the colored ginger and a flood of chopped green onions. Maybe green onions were on clearance that day. I have had their ramen a few years back and liked it. What happened? To top it all, the lady cashier/order taker wasn't in a good mood that day. The dining experience starts at the greeting station and if the front service folks do not seem to want to be at work, everything starts going downhill. Will not risk a return visit.
