I stayed nearby this place while I stayed in Portland and kept walking past it and it was always fairly busy. Finally I decided to try it and I regretted not trying it sooner. I had the pepperoni pizza with sausage and it was probably one of the best pizzas I ever had. I also had the spaghetti with a giant meatball and omg I died of a food coma. I also order a random drink off the alcohol menu and it was really different but in a good way and it was recommended by my waitress. We tried Cibo during Portland Dining Month and were not disappointed. They have amazing wood fired pizza and kind staff members.

I checked the foodie news regularly this summer waiting for Cibo to open their doors, and finally made it in last week with a group of friends. Maybe my expectations were too high with all the anticipation. I was completely wowed by the interior design, but somewhat underwhelmed by the seating and the meal. The space felt swanky, but not pretentious. I loved the shadowy lighting, the eye-catching artwork, and the pretty Italian oven. An impressively long, dark wooden table had been reserved for our party of 7. The seating turned out to be...unsettling? Issues of form over function. Having such a long table meant that the first person in had to slide all the way to the end, and was essentially trapped there for the duration of the meal. So, we who were first to arrive opted for the tall stools instead, which had a beautiful design but were precariously 'tippy'. Those arriving last got the bench seat, which was comfy but oddly high. My long-legged friend sat across from me, and she mentioned feeling like a little girl with her feet dangling below, unable to reach the floor. We ordered several starters to pass around. The garbanzo-crusted Cecina Genovese topped with pesto had a strange springy texture but very nice flavor. We also shared some sautéed pea shoots, which were terrific. I'm not generally a fan of greens, but they were my favorite part of the meal. The cod fritters were a hit with everyone. For my entrée I chose the Stromboli. The crust was perfect but when I dug in, I found that the filling was overly salty. I am not sure how that could be avoided in light of the meats that were used, but it was nevertheless too much salt to call it great. I traded a piece to one of my tablemates in exchange for a slice of his Margherita pizza, which was good, simple and seasoned just right. My neighbor's pasta was spectacular but the ragu tasted extremely bland, and was disappointing. The Aperol Spritz cocktail, however, was fantastic (and no, this was not related to the tippy seat problem). I only had one but could have happily drunk 10 more of those. Cibo is a short walk from my house and I will give them another try, perhaps in the warmer weather to enjoy the sidewalk seating. I hope next time the food wows me as much as the decor did this time. read more

Pricey, but only because the portions are rather small. Larger portions would make me care less about the prices. The pasta was fresh, the sauce was tasty, and we quickly agreed this would be a new favorite spot for special occasions. Our server was knowledgeable and gracious, and was great with recommending food and drink. The atmosphere is romantic and classy, but approachable. The best part was the desserts. Was excited and anticipated the thought of being regulars at this new local restaurant right around the corner from me, but unfortunately it was a thumbs down. I really wanted to fall in love with this place, but the night my fiancé and friend decided to try it out we left with disappointment mainly from the uninviting customer service. We entered with no one to greet us and stood there as waiters passed us by so we went to the bar where the bartender looked at us but did not acknowledge us at all. He continued to conversate with 3 women and looked over at us a second time which gave us the impression that he was definitely ignoring us. Mind you the restaurant was not busy at all that night with only about 5 occupied tables. Finally a waiter noticed us and sat us at a booth. We ordered and felt the food was ok, but the lack of attentiveness and customer service put a bad taste in our mouths. It just didn't seem like anyone really cared and was prepped well enough to do a great job. My fiancé wanted to give it another shot and realized that this really will not be a place we can ever return to when there are restaurants and even food carts that are way better than this place. I feel like if you open a new restaurant especially in Portland there's a certain standard and care that is put out there by other great restaurants that this place does not have. People take pride in every aspect of their job when it comes to an amazing business and I hope management will do a better job of conveying that through their employees for future customers. read more

We came here for happy hour and started off pleased. Pizza? Good, and good deal. Wings? Tasty. In order to get some veggies with our food, we asked for a side of the seasonal vegetables, which were pea tendrils. And we waited. And waited... aaaand waited. After a half hour the hostess came out and cleared a plate. We mentioned that we were still waiting on pea tendrils. And we waited. And waited. Our server finally popped up and said our pea tendrils had been 'hijacked.' (?) We finally got said tendrils (which were fine) and the check. No discount, no apology. Now I quite enjoyed the food we got. But i can never recommend a place that can crank out a pizza in five minutes but makes you wait more than 45 minutes... for pea tendrils. The whole thing could have been redeemed with a simple apology, and at least comping us for a $5 plate of tendrils. But that didnt happen, so I won't go back. You shouldn't either. read more

We were looking for a good Sunday brunch spot and we chose well! We were warmly greeted by the staff as soon as we walked in. Coffee and drinks came quickly, followed by some amazing donuts with an orange glaze sauce for dipping. The meal was unique and tasty. Joseph had impeccable timing for refilling coffee, water, bringing food, etc. We will definitely be back here. read more

The food was outstanding! The pizza was simple, rustic, wood-fired, YUMMY. The polenta fries were surprisingly addictive, and the house red was better than any other house red I've had elsewhere. Why only three stars? My husband noticed that the wait staff and the kitchen staff appeared to be standing around talking about every single table of patrons in the restaurant. Once I started paying attention I noticed it too. To observe that made me feel self conscious and not very welcome. We brought our two young kids with us so that observation made me feel particularly uncomfortable - even though I'm meticulous about cleaning up after them. I was really excited to return for a date night, sans children. I'm not sure, given all the other culinary options in Portland, if that will happen. I'm hoping someone from the restaurant will see this and encourage better customer service. read more

Showed up 5:45 last Saturday. Pretty busy for so early, but no one waiting except me. Host comes over (no "hello, how are you", no friendly, all business...) and asks me "how many", I respond that there will be two of us. In the mean time another woman comes in behind me. He asks her how many and she says "there will be three of us". So, he says to her, come with me. Seats her at the last small table, then comes back and tells me I can sit at the bar. Huh? I worked many years in the restaurant business, and that was just plain rude! So I ask him, why did he seat her first when I was waiting before her, and he tells me that the "table suits three better". I ask why they couldn't sit at the bar (which was wide open) and he informs me that three don't work well at the bar. Ok, bitch, now you are on my last nerve. The bar stools don't have backs and the friend I was meeting has low back pain problems, so I wanted to sit at a table. We also had a play to go to, so we had a time constraint. Didn't want to wait 20 minutes for a table so we sat at the bar. Yet I was stil irritated by this unfriendly, snobby, rude host. The warm, friendly, and attentive male bartender helped smooth out the frosty encounter with the host. My friend ordered the polenta lasagna, which she had had previously at Cibo and I ordered the hanger steak and rosemary Tuscan fries. I was quite surprised by the polenta lasagna; creamy, with a very flavorful tomato sauce and melted cheese on top. Couldn't quit "trying" it. Just get it! The hanger steak was HUGE, with big flavor and cooked perfectly (was told when I asked for medium rare "that's the only way we cook it"). The fries were ok, could of used some garlic aoili or something interesting to dip them into ( the bartender brought over some marinara sauce for me).... So would I go back? Yes ,for the food and service (5 stars), no, for the host experience (2 stars), That's why I gave it 3 stars. Really, get a new host! read more

Great service! Wait staff was very friendly and responsive to our table of 5. Our table was ready at our reservation time. We ordered several small plates and entree dishes and had the house red which was really good. As far as the food, the Brussel sprouts were delicious! One of my favorite restaurants in Portland. I love Italian food and they nail it here. Their servings are pretty nice, since I can never finish everything on my plate. I will be the first one to admit that I am a pizza snob. I lived in New York for 15 years, and once you taste New York pizza, everything else pales in comparison. With that, I am here to tell you that Cibo makes an amazing oven-fired pizza. AMAZING! I almost didn't write this review, because I don't want all you people showing up there and taking my seat! :) I've had a few other things at Cibo, the wings, salad etc... and it was all good, but I can't bring myself to order anything else but the Margherita pizza. LOVE Cibo! We come here once a week, now that we've discovered it. Their late night happy hour is great and works perfectly with our late night eating schedule. I don't even know what you wouldn't like on the menu-everything we've had is perfect and so tasty! Our faves are the margherita pizza, mussels, and the octopus salad. Spaghetti and meatball (as big as your fist!) bowl comes in close too, as well as the burger (just make sure to ask for it medium as they do sometimes cook it a little too long). I don't think you could go wrong with anything here! The staff is always very friendly and goes out of their way to make sure you are taken care of. OH Sweet Cheesus! Our party of three walked right in and sat at the bar at 7PM on a Friday night! The immediate attention and service were only outdone by our meal. The bartender was delightful, engaging and steered us toward a divine experience of meat, cheese and spirits. You Must Try - Tagliata - Piedmontese hanger steak with Tuscan fries ... melts in your mouth. Stromboli - Philadelphia rolled pizza made with cacio di Roma, salami, ham, prosciutto, provolone, olives. ... oozy, cheesy, meaty goodness. I love the feel of the space. Our server shared the stories behind the "two tree" bar and the barn wood used on the walls. There is a real sense of pride and staff appreciation going on at this gem in SE. read more

Loved this place! I brought my boyfriend here for his birthday. Great atmosphere, great food and great service. Our server was great answering questions and making a wine recommendation. We got a bottle and he was great picking one that was not the $60, but in the $30 range which was amazing and completely appropriate price for a birthday dinner. The food was the perfect portion so we could finish our meal and still walk around (just a bit stuffed) and enjoy the rest of the cute part of town. read more

when traveling with young children you can't always eat in restaurants. no matter how kid-friendly portland is, sometimes you just have to spare others the annoyance of eating next to the little dragons. so we ordered take out from cibo one evening on our last visit to portland and tho ii feel like i should be giving 5 stars based on how great the food was alone, i don't quite feel i can do it without having eaten in the restaurant. cibo is smack dab in the middle of division street, which is now one of the trendier areas of portland, new hipster money and all. some of us wanted pizza and some needed some protein and cibo was the perfect compromise. the pizzas were thin crusted and wood fired and delicious if not amazing. what was amazing was my perfectly cooked steak with chimichurri for only $16. it was tender and juicy and still very pink and fleshy. i am such a carnivore sometimes. this steak really made my evening. and i could not get over that it was only $16. it probably wasn't grass fed...? but it was perfection in a slab of meat. we also loved the polenta fries, which were perfectly crisp but not over fried--and creamy good on the inside. also had a perfectly executed ceasar salad. i would definitely recommend just based on the food. the ambiance can't be far behind. read more

My partner and I went into Cibo for the first time a couple weeks ago and had an okay experience, leaving full, which was good, but disappointed. Quick overview: The atmosphere, layout, and decor was fairly pleasing, having drawn us in from outside. The food was pretty decent, but not amazing. The service was not good. Details: To start, the food was pretty good, especially for the price. The prices on the happy hour were fantastic. We shared one happy hour item as a appetizer, the red onion rings with a tarragon aioli, which was delicious and unique, and a house mixed green salad, which was nothing special, and then each had pasta dishes. I got the salmon penne which was tasty, but the pasta didn't taste homemade, and the salmon was in chunks mixed in with the pasta, which I didn't prefer. From the description on the menu, I was under the impression that the salmon was a fillet on top. My boyfriend got the Puttanesca, which he described as good, but didn't taste as fresh as he's used to having at other Italian restaurants we usually go to. The cannolis were very disappointing. They were tiny, (the miniature size not specified on the menu) and hardly filled, with too much powered sugar on top. Real Italian cannolis are full size, big, and packed filled with creamy filling. The wine was good, as we ordered 2 glasses of the pinot noir. We originally were going to order a bottle we had our eyes on, but there was a big typo in the wine list that had all the prices incorrectly listed, and after nearly 15 mins of waiting for our bottle that we had ordered, and wondering why it was taking so long, our waitress came over to inform us that the bottle we ordered was actually $40 more than listed. Not a mistake they should put off from correcting. Overall, our waitress was friendly when she did come to table, but she just was not very good at her job. After the very long wait for the wine, once the appetizers came out, we didn't have share plates, silverware, or napkins. She had plenty of time to prep our table in between taking our order, and the food coming out, (and she was not very busy, as it was pretty slow, with only a small handful of active tables). As well, after entrees came, our server never came back to check on us once, until the end, when we needed boxes. During this time, we both ran out of water, and my boyfriend had finished his wine in the earlier part of his entree, and wanted to order a second glass, which would have added $10 to the bill, and more tip for her, but she never noticed, and never asked. In fact, she walked by our table once during this time, and stopped just nearby our table to look out the window at a cute dog, which we were also admiring, but still didn't come over to ask how our food was, or to fill our waters, or get my partner more wine. She just watched the dog for about 30 seconds and kept walking. She was completely unaware. It was really disappointing. Unless it's just for a little happy hour, I don't see us going back to Cibo. read more

We were near the Willamette heading east on Division planning on going to the Whiskey Soda Lounge, but we did a last minute change up and continued east to Cibo, and I'm really glad we did!! 1st thing, the interior space is awesome, the fire pit, the open kitchen with dead pigs hanging over, the translucent bar in front of it, and the booths looked really comfy and the tables by the window were fun as a sort of draftsman-architect-engineer-urban planner-type-desk. All the staff members that I met were awesome, and our server was really great. As far as the food, their pizza was great as advertised and the arancini was the best I've had in Portland, however they were not as good as my authentic Italian Grandma's rice balls! But, nothing ever is as good as Grandma's! ;-) Also, I was impressed with their house red wine, and I thought it was cool that they had a white wine "on tap"-I didn't get a chance to try it though. Also, this restaurant has some good Gluten Free options with their Ceccina-if you are into that sort of thing. read more

We went to Cibo during their late night happy hour. The pizza was pretty good but we got salami on one which we thought was a tad bit salty. I still lean towards another popular pizza place in town..Spaghetti with oilive oil and red chilli flakes was very homey and comforting. We also enjoyed the house red wines and they complemented our meal well. I would go back here specially for their happy hour! read more

My girlfriend and I have been here twice. Absolutely awesome servers both times -- some of the best I've had lately! The regular menu prices are very reasonable and the happy hour is amazing. Last night we got three glasses of wine, a salad, a pizza, and a generous amount of bread with an olive tapenade and pesto for only $34! I do have two suggestions though: 1. The house white wine that we got a few weeks ago wasn't very good. It tasted bland. There's nothing going on in that glass -- no acidity, no fruit, no oak, nothing. (The house red is great, however, so we both ordered that yesterday.) 2. The mozzarella doesn't melt and spread well on the pizzas. Based on the texture and flavor, it looks like Cibo is using low moisture mozzarella that is shipped in a big hard block, which is then cut into little cubes and put on the pizza. I really strongly prefer traditional whole milk mozzarella shipped in water. It really is a better product and makes a much better margarita pizza. read more

Food was pretty good (we had pasta, cecina (chickpea flatbread), and mixed greens), cocktails were great (obituary!), service left something to be desired. Several servers were somewhat arrogant/cold, not leaving a very inviting or warm feel to the place. They didn't split a bill for 10 people (after us asking!)...doing math should not be a part of a nice dinner! read more

Great place for happy hour. The $7 margarita pizza is delicious. They make a real caesar salad. The drinks are fun and the location is great. The other dishes I saw looked amazing and I'm anxious to get back to try something new. Nothing about Cibo really impressed me all that much. They do have a terrific happy hour menu so I did enjoy that and the ambiance is far more laid back than a certain other Italian place a few doors down. That being said, the service was very ho-hum, indifferent, as was the burger I ordered.
