Tried this restaurant out to find its one of those places that is not a good place to go when you are actually hungry. Ordered pesto spaghetti and my girlfriend got a pizza. The pizza came first; a very bland take on a margherita pizza with arugula and mushrooms, no herbs in the sauce, not much taste, but a lot of arugula which was perhaps the best thing about the meal. Luckily she wasn't very hungry because the little lump of spaghetti they sold me for $15 was about a third of what I would consider a full plate of pasta. I mentioned it to the waiter when he took my empty plate away after 5 minutes and his listless response was "that is the size of all their pasta dishes." Not a tad of concern was expressed that I wasn't satisfied so I won't go there again. I think good restaurants consider that some people are actually hungry. Not everyone is just looking for an excuse to throw some money away on tiny portions for the sake of sitting in the atmosphere of a particular restaurant. read more

Impeccably delicious anchovi bidonis are not to be missed (though I'm very confused about the origin of this mysterious fried delight; a google image search leads one to photos of various trash bins... could this dish be a creation original to Cibo?) The pork belly is soft and spicy-licious and polenta fries are somethin special---salty, sweet, crunchy, creamy. Not to mention nicely-done cocktails, well chosen wine list, and a decor which begs one to return. Mm, mm. Cibo is our favorite "neighborhood" eatery. So of course on our 16th Anniversary we came in for our favorite seafood Italian dishes: octopus salad (best thing on menu), grilled calamari and beans, and the pot of mussels. Probably now our favorite Portland restaurant. Their happy hour is one of the best we've experienced. We love small plates to share. The broccoli rabe, brussel sprouts and spinach were divine and we don't always get enough greens in our lives with both working in restaurants long hours and skipping meals. We also had the escargot which here delicious and the happy hour margarita pizza and drinks were excellent. Had the tiramisu and affagato and a cognac to finish and it was one of the best meals we've had in a long time. The service was excellent and the seats are very comfortable. Excellent wood fired pizza, and Cibo offers a unique special pie every night. Love the service and staff, great apps and the wine specials are also unique and tasty. Really like the garbanzo flour cracker appetizer, and if they have the lentil dish, its a perfect spread. We like the casual bar and that you can talk to the pizza chef while they toss the dough and prep. Great people watching and eavesdropping on nearby convos. read more

Ok, i'll preface this by saying that i lived in both Chicago and New York for several years each and i believe that i have had the benefit of both good to excellent italian foods and lots fine dining in general. I also have been a cook in several nice restaurants myself. Several people have told me "try Cibo". I had been wanting to for quite a while and finally did tonight. WOW! What a total utter disappointment! First, i'm wearing shorts and I sit down at one of the window tables inside and as I pull my chair in WHAC! My knee bangs into the rough unfinished corner of the concrete table base. My knee hurts and is bleeding like i'm a little kid and i just fell off my bicycle. I start by ordering a caesar salad and a heater allen pils and a simple pizza with Prosciutto. The beer comes and is flat. There is no replacement to my taste so i accept to drink it. The Caesar salad comes and it is sloppy and over dressed like my fat auntie in Ohio made it and dumped a whole bottle of dressing over it rendering it almost inedible. And then finally the Pizza comes to the table almost cold with unusually thick slices of dried up Prosciutto that are very leathery. Trying not to be a big complainer i make due and eat as much as i can before everything gets too gooey and wilted and halfway through it all i ask for the check. I'm never asked if i want a box for the remaining pizza and salad (not that I wanted it but just saying) and if i was serving that table i would have certainly comp'd that flat beer. I pay and leave. Cibo has got to do a better job. Those Italian dishes are so simple i can't really understand how they can mess them up? When people tell me to try places that are this bad, i can only imagine that they think it's great because the have never had anything really good. I feel sorry for them. read more

We LOVE stopping by for happy hour; the mussels and pizza just hit the spot. One day we decided to bring the kids so they could try a different kind of pizza, well they love CIBO's now too! They frequently ask to go; the pizza was a hit with all our kiddos ages 2-14. I think cutting the pizza with the scissors just makes it that much more fun. My husband and I have been to Naples and the pizza there is the best in the world. But in Portland we have Cibo. Its excellent pizza, not exactly as moist as the ones in Naples but the crust is thin like Naples and has yummy tomato sauce. Cibo and Nostrana have very similar margherita pizzas, both delicious. My husband ordered the Cibo burger and he says its the best burger he's had in Portland. We also got the baked penne pasta which was also 5/5. the red onion rings were pretty good 4/5. vanilla ice cream for dessert 3/5 (not recommended).
