My sister-in-law took my wife and I out to dinner. As a visitor to New York I had no clue where we were going, but assumed it was good. After a quick subway ride from Hell's Kitchen to The Village we stumbled upon an unassuming door to the basement of an apartment building. You immediately walk into the bar. You are greeted by a man who is your host and server. He has a lot of energy, very friendly, and extremely knowledgeable about the menu. His personality and the music in here is needed as being below ground level it would feel very dungeon like with a lifeless staff and melancholy music. Now for the star of the show, the food. My family chose to eat family style. This was a great idea, because we got to try so much of the menu. We had a very unique spin on lasagna, but it was great, delicious ravioli, flavorful cacio e pepe. Everything was great, but one thing stood out amongst them all and that was the meatballs. I have had many meatballs throughout my life. My neighbor growing up was from Italy. I worked for a family run Italian restaurant. These are hands down the most flavorful meatballs I've ever had! It is a must try! We also had the tiramisu. It was homemade and good. I recommend this place as a nice date night or to bring a couple visiting town. The meatballs are a must. We made a reservation for four for 7pm on a Thursday. One of us had to cancel last minute and the restaurant was very accommodating. They have both indoor and outdoor dining. During this particular night, the outdoor dining was packed which left us in a cozy, not super loud inside. It was decorated with walls of wine and exuded a cool old school restaurant vibe. We shared the Caesar salad. Not bad but not the best I've had. I found that there was too much dressing. The meatballs were delicious For the entrees, we shared the delicious herbaceous risotto with the perfect balance of vegetables and cream. The wine pasta was also very good and unique. In a day where the weather feels like 100+ degrees we were welcomed to the table closest to the air conditioning. Our still water was served traditionally at room temperature, but we welcomed the secondary glass of ice that we used to cool our glasses. We debated on which bottle of rose would be best for this heat and were recommend the Sicilian Planeta Rose ($54). We then started with the cooling plate of prosciutto e melona ($19) which paired well with our first sip. As an entree we split the melanzana miso y tartufo (eggplant with truffle)- ($23) and the cappellacci served in a brown butter sage sauce ($29). Our waiter was welcoming and respected the times we were mid-conversation by ever to gently refilling out wine glasses. He kept both our ice and our water glasses full as he noticed we were hot from the sweltering heat. The atmosphere is quiet but at the same time lively with conversations. The music is a mix of bohemian French and singer-songwriter standards. Service is always very friendly despite the fact that I have a bad habit of showing up without a reservation and making life difficult. White painted brick walls are a touch of classic New York well matched with fresh flowers and real candles to set the mood for a class dinner. The food is consistently delicious. Fresh pastas are a cut above and always al dente - highly recommend the house special pasta strips cooked in Chianti. But you can't go wrong with a special if one is on offer or the green pappardelle. From the mains, the porchetta is a winner time and again; porky, fatty, crispy with creamy beans, what's not to like? I'd recommend an app if only to keep the good times rolling, the octopus is a personal favorite. Decent wine by the carafe is a nice touch to keep you from overdoing it on a Wednesday. Desserts are consistently good if you have a sweet tooth. All in all, a great choice for elevated trattoria fare and lovely service in a beautiful space. read more

The one big thing you should take from this review is that you have to try the Lila cocktail. This was my second time at Ciccio and the drink is what brought me back. It's gin, elderflower liquor, cucumber, and maybe one or two more things. Incredibly refreshing, delicious, and strong yet easy to drink. I will come back yet again to have another. I tried the Involtino di pollo for my entree. I really ordered that since I saw there was prosciutto incorporated into the dish and I love prosciutto. I with the prosciutto took more of a center stage in the dish. The chicken had cheese and prosciutto on the inside and crispy skin. It was tasty but I wouldn't get it again. It came with potato purée and sting beans, both above average! We finished with the tiramisu. It came in a cup, which I'm usually skeptical of, but it was one of the better tiramisus I've had in a while, a real tribute to the Italian cuisine at the restaurant. The bartender was incredibly friendly and greeted us as we came in! Next time I'll sit at the bar. I would recommend Ciccio for one or two drinks, or a night cap and dessert. Excellent little spot near the SoHo Playhouse. Grabbed dinner here prior to seeing a play with my girls friends. Everything was delicious. The meatball appetizer, the pappardelle, and the wine all stood out. Polpettine della tosca - Nona's secret recipe beef meatballs didn't disappoint. Great for sharing! Strisce alla chiantigiana- delicious and very flavorful. Pappardelle verdi com salsiccia- this was my favorite dish. I had dinner here on my first night in NYC, and it was just perfect! I phoned ahead, but didn't have to wait at all for a seat at the bar, around 7:30pm on a Saturday. The Frutti di Mare Risotto was perfect with a glass of Chianti, topped off with Tiramisu and an Espresso Martini for dessert! A few minutes after I sat down, a couple joined me at the bar--they were regulars who lived in the neighborhood, and had wonderful recommendations! The vibe was lively and cozy, and the bartender and owner are so sweet; the owner even remembered me from when I called. I went there the other night to treat myself to a fancy dinner, and Ciccio's did not disappoint. I had the Caesar salad, a basket of bread served with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, the pappardelle Verdi con salsiccia e cavolo rosso, the creme brûlée, a glass of Sauvignon blanc, and some chamomile tea. Let me tell you...best meal I've had in a long time. I ate every bite. the house made pasta was ridiculously delicious. And the service was wonderful. My waitress was friendly and attentive, and she's the one who recommended the pappardelle, which was a fantastic choice. And the other wait staff kept my water glass full and checked on me repeatedly. The atmosphere was warm and cozy. I will definitely be going back. We were visiting from Baltimore and only had one night in NYC. We are so happy we found Ciccio! Our server, Chloe, was wonderful and the food was absolutely delicious! The house wine was excellent as well. I have dietary restrictions and they were able to accommodate them and help me navigate the best options, which included seafood risotto, and the roasted eggplant with truffle. Ciccio has a lot of good things going for it. It's under the radar, so we were actually able to make a reservation for Saturday night on that same Saturday afternoon - no small feat these days. The room was comfortable enough, and the people watching was...interesting - it is an eclectic crowd. Our server was brusque, bordering on unfriendly, but service was good. The chicken liver was not - grainy and under-seasoned. But the pastas got the job done! My husband was very pleased with his lasagna, and for good reason - it was more satisfying than I Sodi's highly touted version - with plenty of artichokes and cheese, a pool of bright, sweet sauce, and a crispy top. My cacio e pepe did not skimp on the pepe, the sauce was just the right consistency, the pasta light and springy. Our steak with salsa verde and a tangle of watercress hit the spot, too. I made reservations for 12:30pm for a party of 3 on OpenTable, easy peasy. I showed up on time, but had to wait for the rest of my party. They sat me anyways and didn't say anything when I waited for over 20 minutes without ordering anything. When my party arrived, our waiter was very nice and helpful when members of my party had questions. I ended up with their Spaghetti Alla Carbonara with a poached egg. It was really good and definitely filled me up for the rest of the day. Other members of my party had their Potato Gnocchi with tomato sauce and Burger Con La Porchetta. They all enjoyed their meals and had no complaints. This was a "catch up" lunch, so we actually sat for a while after we finished our meals and they never tried to rush us out, which we appreciated. Wanted to love Ciccio so much; however it fell really short in so many areas. My husband and I made a reservation at Ciccio for our Saturday date night and we were pumped to try the food based on the reviews on Yelp; however the food turned out to be the worse part of the whole experience. The ambiance is really cute and the service is good however, food and wine are way over priced and you should pay close attention to your bill as they will try to overcharge you for things. We started our meal with two glasses of wine which were very small pours. My husband even made a comment that they were smallest pours he had ever seen(wine tasting size) the glasses of wine range from $12 - 16 dollars so I would expect a decent glass. For an appetizer we had the burrata which was good but did not have anything to eat it with aside from a fork... I believe some crostini's would have been great. For our main course I had Pappardelle and my husband had the Strisce Alla Chiantigiana. Both dishes lacked flavor and were really watery. I was really hoping for something with a lot of flavor. We did not order any dessert in fear that it would be a waste of money based on the rest of the experience. When we received the bill I noticed that I was charged $20 a glass for my wine(mind you they do not have a glass of wine on the menu that is $20) when I questioned the waiter about it he said he would need to go check. I am still wondering where the $20 dollars came from. I will definitely not be returning to Ciccio. My feedback for the restaurant: With so many Italian options in NYC I would definitely consider upping you game when it comes to your food. read more

A lovely experience start to finish. They accommodated us, a group of 6, having walked in without a reservation. From drinks-a spritz, a mezcal Negroni, a Spagliatto, a terrific bottle of Sauvignon blanc-the 2 complimentary dishes of focaccia with dipping oil (didn't expect one let alone two)-to the entrees-papardelle verdi, cacio e pepe, strisce alla chianigiana, meatballs, tortelli-everything was truly fantastic. As we sat we started to smell something chocolatey that was so intoxicating we had to ask what it was. The waiter told us the room next to us was where the pasta and dessert was made and it must have been the chocolate torte. We got it for dessert without looking at the menu. I lunch fairly often in this neighborhood... it's very possible I have had lunch at every restaurant walking distance from Ciccio, and I have to say Ciccio really stood out from the pack from me. The decor is awesome, sort of rustic city disrepair (exposed and distressed walls) meets glossy modern ikea-ish style furnishing. The vibe in the restaurant was also very good, even though the tables are a little close together. Service was welcoming and on point, if you're in a rush they'll get you in and out, but if you're in the mood to linger for a bit, that's cool too. Great olive oil for the bread and used on the sandwiches; they have a soup and half sandwich lunch special that seems like a good deal. I tried the squash soup (both soups on the lunch menu are vegetarian, Yay!) and wanted to eat the entire bowl. I also had a bit of my friend's mozzarella sandwich, which was good. I had the Strisce Alla Chiantigiana which was delicious. I customized it to not include the beef cheek, but I bet the meat would knock this dish out of the park. I brought my friends to Ciccio to try it out with me and expected a lot from this place because it does have a 4.5 star rating. We were the first ones there for dinner and were seated right away. The restaurant itself has a very nice ambiance, very cute and cozy. The service wasn't that great even if we were the only ones there. We also told them to split the check with 2 cards/gave them specific directions, but they still managed to mess it up. The food also took around 30 minutes to come out. Now as for the food my friend ordered the Lasagna and was pretty satisfied with it. I personally liked it too, so I would recommend that. As for me, I ordered Risotto Al Frutti Di Mare, but instead of risotto I changed it to tagliatelle. The seafood in this pasta was very delicious, but the pasta itself was very bland. I wasn't impressed at all. Maybe it's because I asked to change it to a pasta, but I was upset when I took my first bite into it. read more
