I am confused, so confused....the only thing good here was the complimentary bread. Maybe we were there on an off night. The service was also reactive and not very proactive ******* Response to the owner's post: The owner reached out with a mixed message...he wanted to know what was wrong yet he felt the rating was underserved. Feels like one of those situations where you apologize but you dont really mean it. In addition, i was not the table he stated below since i didnt order any rice pudding...so much for the checking bill, etc story. I did write him back and to save all the details i basically wrote that the food was bland and cold while service was reactive at best. Interestingly, Eric E's recent feb 2 experience seemed similar to mine, we didnt complain as we got the vibe that it would be pointless...everything was just half eaten. Early Friday night dinner for two before Jazz at Lincoln Center. Very nice room and attentive service, but I have eaten better Turkish in town at better prices. To be fair, the Adana was excellent. The Cacik complements the Adana nicely, but you must order it separately. OTOH, the various eggplant preparations (we tried most of them) were either bland, or tasted like they came out of a can. Portions are small. The Pide was spongy and the Turkish tea tasted, well, flat. The Manti (lamb dumplings) were forgettably tasteless. Just about every Turkish restaurant in Cliffside makes a decent shepherd's salad, so it is hard to rate Cinar on that basis alone. I will try them again and intend to order the lamb shank, mixed lamb grill (weekends only), seafood specials, tripe soup (all looked and smelled great on neighboring tables) and whatever else sounds authentic and off the beaten path. We have had better. The food is good. But the place is too small to handle a big party along with small tables. It was very crowded and extremely noisy because there were 20 people party next to us. Seemed like everyone was shouting to talk to each other. The tables are very much close to each other to the extent that people bumped into our table trying to squeeze since we were in the middle lane. The pita bread and the olive oil is complimentary... the bread was cold. Chicken Shish kabab - was good. Expensive for the 6 small cubes we got some rice and salad. Falafel - good. YES. FINALLY! A great Turkish restaurant in the area that not only has amazing food. But excellent service as well (rare commodity). First and foremost, get the special salad. It's like Shepard salad on steroids. Comes with walnuts, mint, and pomegranate dressing. The calamari is very fresh and tender. The specialty Borek (fried FILO dough with cheese and pastrami) is out of this world! All the other Apps are delicious and well worth a try. For the main course, the absolute best thing to get (for those who like spicy food) is the Adana Kebab. It comes over a bed of thin grilled lavash bread and a special spicy onion/tomato/pepper salad that complements the kebab in a great way. The Chicken kebab as well as the Lamb kebab is by far the juiciest and mod tender that I have had in NJ. If you are with a group I would totally recommend the mixed platter which lets you sample all of there excellent meats. With BYOB option this place is a great little spot that everyone should check out!! read more

Came here for dinner with a few friends. First- it's on a main road, so be sure to find the building number. There is another restaurant just three spots down with the title 'Cafe Diwan- Cinar' written on the awning, which this can be mistaken for. The setting is very nice, intimate lighting and nice decoration. The menu has many options to choose from. They serve Turkish bread as house appetizers (always great!). We had hummus, French fries, and baklava- all which were excellent. The baklava was on the sweet side- but that's how I like it. I ordered the Lamb Adana Kebab (my staple dish when I go out for Turkish cuisine) so I am able to compare it to others. The kebabs were chewy- not how I think sheekh kebabs should be. I have had lamb Adana kebabs that were soft and tender- which is how I think they should be. The plate came with a heaping of onions and a green pepper..which doesn't interest me but I suppose everyone has different taste. It also came with quite a few pieces of seasoned thin flat breads. They brought the rice on a separate plate (and a few minutes after the entree with the kebabs, which was odd because what are you supposed to do with half a meal? But perhaps they were busy- so I didn't mind as much). I also ordered bulger, a cracked wheat, which I like mixing with white rice to eat with the kebabs. Other than the kebab being chewy ( - main point), the rest of the meal was nice. My friend ordered the mushroom casserole which she didn't like too much. They add gratuity to the bill (not sure if there's a minimum). I am not sure if I will return again since I've had better Turkish food. I wonder if the chewy Adana kebabs were a one time thing, I really hope it was (im really hung up about that! Was looking forward to it)- but I would recommend you check it out once to see if it suits you, if you're into middle eastern, Turkish cuisine. read more

Four out of five stars and borderline five. I'm a big fan of Turkish food and this was amazing for stateside. Servers were from Istanbul and Cappadoccia, so it was fun reliving experiences. The environment is laid back and pretty and food is first class. Started off with only 3 appetizers, babaganoush, hummus (subtle yet powerful flavors) and spinach. Obviously the bread is terrific, served with an olive oil . Lentil soup was delicious. Margery had a falafel platter which was gigantic with hummus and a side Meditreanean salad. I felt the need to try the Cinar salad which was mind boggling great. Filled with walnuts and a pomegrante sauce it was one of the best salads I've ever had. I saw diners with chicken kabob platters that were cooked to perfection and honestly the food and environment were special and made me want to return....as soon as possible. I need another baseline of one or two more meals here before I give it a 5-star rating but it's pretty awesome. read more

I'm Turkish, and I must say I don't even enjoy Adana kebab in Turkey, as much as I do it here! It's so delicious that I have it every single time. Coupled with the Cinar salad (also known as "gavurdağı salatası"), it's a killer combo! On another occasion, I also tried MANTI (turkish dumplings), but didn't like it as much (too much dough / too watery). For that, go to Marmaris on River Road! The quality of the Turkish restaurants in this neighborhood in general is superb, but the Adana kebab at this place unbeatable. I ordered grilled calamari $8.50 and when it arrived all I got was about 4" of squid thinkers sliced. For entree I had Adona kebab which I must say was very delicious. I grew up eating Turkish food, as my parents were both from Istanbul. Cinar does an amazing job taking me back to my childhood. Today, I had the stuffed eggplant with ground beef and spices (Karniarik) it was terrific. Let me rewind a few steps and mention the appetizer-I had the phyllo dough wrapped in cheese (sigara borek). Just the right amount of cheese filling and the phyllo dough was flaky and not doughy. The waitress was very attentive-there was seven in our party, and we all agreed that every thing was excellent. I live in Connecticut, and this is my third visit to Cinar, and it definitely will not be the last. read more

Cinar is an amazing place. The setting is pretty cozy, it's relatively easy to find parking on the side streets and the food is very tasty. My only gripe is that there are not enough options for vegetarians. What options they do have however, are the best deal. It's also nice that they have a rice or Bulgur option for most everything. My wife and I frequently eat Turkish/Mid-Eastern Food. On our way back from New York Yesterday we decided to try Cinar for the first time. We have dined at numerous restaurants in the area and Cinar set a new standard. Service: Prompt, polite and pleasant. Always available without being overbearing. Decor - Makes the best of a challenging environment. Attractive without being too cusey. Food: The Main event. Opening with the Cinar and a Spicy salad, both lip smacking and a meal unto themselves. Accompanied by fresh warm bread (already a winner). The main dishes were: Turkish Dumplings Manti A light dough stuffed with ground lamb and onions steamed to perfection, served with seasonings and garlic yogurt sauce. ASK FOR EXTRA GARLIC Absolutely amazing! Ali Nazik Smoked eggplant puree with ground lamb and garlic yogurt. EXTRA GARLIC and we had the shish instead of ground lamb.
