STEPH JUDGEMENT: Suffers in comparison to other Mexican eateries nearby. I've been here a few times, always to get a bean and cheese burrito to go. The first time, the accompanying chips were horribly stale. I've eaten some stale chips in my time but these to me were inedible. They have little baggies of chips out prepared to pop in with an order, and I have to wonder how long these have been sitting out. In subsequent orders the chips have been ok, so I think that was just a fluke. The bean and cheese burritos themselves have been fine, but I keep forgetting to tell them to skip the iceberg lettuce "salad" that comes in the box. Because of the chips and "salad" it's over $6 for this and I just don't feel like it's a good value. Also, no salsa bar. The woman who always takes my order is really nice, though, and I keep coming back because of its convenient location to me, but I think I'm going to have to face the fact that we're just not compatible and I should walk the extra few blocks to somewhere that I do like. Plenty of other people seem to like them so maybe I should try some other items and see if I like those any better. read more

I give this dish 2.5 out of 5 (average) Chile Relleno (average), cheese enchilada (average), and carne asada soft taco (very good), $9.25. My wife gives this dish a 3 of 5. A la carte: Chicken taco (pretty good), $2.00. I give this item 4 out of 5. Complimentary chips were good but the salsa was blah. ***Also the prices have increase since 01/31/2014. Nothing special. The food was barely okay. I had the enchiladas, they were dry and flavorless, I had to ask for more sauce. I'm sure they might have some local favorites but nothing that was good for me. I didnt finish my food and I might go grab something else when I leave. I don't like this place but it is convenient and cheap....and I am cheap so I will continue to eat there even though I am not overwhelmed by the food. The issues that I have with this place are 1) cash only....I never have cash 2) the chips and salsa are not salty..... Just moved into the neighborhood and not quite unpacked yet so decided to check this place out. Took it to go. Nothing special. Good but not spectacular in any way. Ordered a dry burrito but they covered it in sauce. Turned out it to be a good thing or it would have been pretty dry. Plus needed salsa for some added moisture and flavor. Delicious Chicken Enchiladas. Waitress was nice. Brought us a huge basket of warm crispy chips and salsa as soon we were seated . I took one star off because my friend and I each ordered a soda. It had more water than syrup. Tasted like water with Coca-Cola flavoring. They should sell Mexican Coca-Cola even Carl's Jr on Willow & Long Beach Blvd sell it. Or at least sell canned sodas. The chicken enchilada plate came with 3 enchiladas, beans , rice and side of shredded lettuce salad. The waitress brought us a second basket of chips when my friend requested it. Great home cooked style mexican food. The place is homey and humble. Very clean, the help is polite and they have a jute box that looks like a purple and pink lit space ship with all your favorite south of the border jams. The tacos are alright. Not a taco joint. The lengua was hard and taste odd. The chicken and asada meat has a great flavor but better to order in another way other than the tacos. Their chips and salsa suck, sorry to say. The chicken tostada ! ! ! My favorite anywhere. It's huge and ridiculous looking. The plate it's served on is big, the tostada is almost as big as the plate. Bombarded with fresh crispy cold lettuce, onions, cilantro and tomatoes, delicious chicken, jack cheese and grated molida cheese with cold thick sour cream. I have been coming here for 7 years. The food has always been consistent, and while it may not be 100% authentic it tastes great, the prices are fair, and it's close to my home. Until recently this has been my neighborhood standby. The service has been going downhill. I'm lucky if my drink gets refilled. A friend of mine was ordering a second meal to go at the time we ordered our meals, we reinforced it a total of 3 times to the server that the specific entree was to go. She brought it out with the regular meal and tried to say we didn't tell her. No girl, that's not cute. The same server also forgot to put in another order to go on another visit. She didn't remember until she brought the bill. You could see the look on her face. My friend, who ordered the dish, had to go to work. I waited another 20 minutes for the kitchen to catch up while the server patronized me with remarks like "don't be upset guys". Really? That part of the meal should have been on the house. I get there for my pickup and am told they only accept cash, and was unable to get my order. I told the woman that she should tell people that over the phone when placing an order so they will not waste their time coming down there because many people do not carry cash these days. read more

Homemade tasting food. Flavorful sauces and soups. Tasty rice and beans. Best shrimp soup I've had! Great offerings--from land to sea. Small free parking in the back (that's actually a good thing as free parking is limited in LB). Clean restroom and restaurant. You know the kitchen must be clean when you look up at the light fixtures and they are sparkly clean. No dust! Only downside is that it's cash only. My breakfast hasn't changed in 6 months, yet they changed how they charge me and increased it 20%. My last visit, I ordered a $7 breakfast and asked for chicken to be added (I got maybe 4oz of chicken), they charged me the dinner price, then added the egg add-on. My chips in salsa (chilaquiles), 4 oz of chewy chicken, and some scrambled eggs were $16... Find yourself an empty chair, perhaps near the bar or underneath the neon juke box. The chips are light and fluffy and come with great salsa. Be sure to order a few fish tacos. At 4pm on a weekday afternoon we found a fiesta at Cinco de Mayo: Large silver pails of Corona atop dark grained wood tables, fresh rotations of chips & salsa, mariachi music pouring from the jukebox, and live wrestling on the t.v. screens. The mexican lady charged me $27 for my order, but something didn't seem right. Got home, check the prices and it should of been $24. After reading the reviews on yelp me and my has been walked to Cinco de Mayo. It was .2 miles from our house so I figured i was going to give it a try. First thing first is it was cash only. We set down the server came to us promptly. We ordered our drinks they came out within a few minutes no biggie. I ordered a chicken burrito($7.00)with sour cream and guacamole inside ($1.70 sour cream & 2.90 guacamole). My husband got the chicken enchilada plate($11.00) & my 2 year old got the shrimp rice ($6.00) I guess the food it was reasonably price I was just caught off guard when I saw $31 bill. My burrito was pretty big for seven dollars. So the reason why they didn't get five stars was because our waiter was too busy flirting with the one man by the bar and another guy at another table to be attentive to us we had to keep trying to get her attention by waiving our hands. Overall she was pretty personable so I don't have too many complaints I would come back on my lunch or something. I am a great fan of the taco. I am a great fan of value. This place does both well. The soft taco is a healthy size. Perfectly finish tortilla with a precise measure of lard and grease -the quintessential golden glisten of a quality street taco. The meat, both carne asada and carnitas (regrettably no al pastor) is abundant and tender with the right crisp. The pairing is adorned with a crown of onions and cilantro with lime and salsa on the side. Now prepare yourself for this... $1.50 each! To you naysayers scoffing that a quality taco can be had for less, i challenge you to eat here. This is easily a $2.00 taco at a finer establishment! I had four. It was excessive, yes, but i was surprised to find the ensuing food coma was not followed by an upset stomach. A badge of quality in my book. The ambiance is lacking, i wouldn't take a date here. Don't judge a book by it's cover... For almost two years, Ive lived down the street from Cinco de Mayo and never stopped in. It looks run down and has generic photos of food plastered to the windows. The other day, I had the worst craving for a breakfast burrito and Cinco was the only spot open that had them. I decided to give it a try, fully expecting to hate it. The burritos were FABULOUS. Not too big, not too small. Tasted like something Id make in my grandma's kitchen. Two, big breakfast burritos with salsa and chips were only $14. I will be coming back. So I've been all around Long Beach trying to find The best Mexican food in town. Turns out that some of the best mexican food around was just around the corner from me the whole time. At first glance Cinco de Mayo looks kind of like a deserted restaurant that has no one inside but once you walk in this place is always full of people who have already discovered this literal hidden gem. The taste here are pretty spot on. They have some of the best refried beans in town and I am sure they are made with all things bad for you (hello Manteca!). They also surprisingly have some of the best carne asada tacos around at a great price, only $1.50 each! Now i am also a bit of a nacho freak and have ordered them here. Do yourself a favor and skip those. Not the greatest and can wind up costing a lot since every component is charged at an add-on price. Something else that you need to know is that this place is cash only. They do have an ATM onsite. Also parking can be a little tricky. If you park in the wrong lot they will tow so make sure you park behind the restaurant. If you want some of the best authentic Mexican food in town make sure you stop by Cinco De Mayo!
