Both the assistant taking my x-rays and the hygienist doing the cleaning were very nice. The hygienist went out of his way to make me feel at ease. What I like the most is that the dentist don't try to push additional services on you or make you feel like you have to do everything suggested. I went to them at least 6 times, getting extensive work done, and I was never informed that they do not take HMO plans from my insurance. I had to contact THEM for them to tell me this, after I saw a letter from my insurance that I owed over 3k for work I had already paid the "copay" for. I had received payment reminders through text messages from an unfamiliar number multiple times, but with no business attached to it (I googled the number to be sure), I had thought it was some kind of scam. It wasn't until I received the same message from Swish through my email on Jan 20th that I realized what it was. I had been seeing them for about a year by this point. Part Two: I worked out a payment plan with Swish and was told that I could text them monthly with the script "This is [my name]. I'd like to make a payment of [$$$] on my account, with the card on file ending in [####]." So I've been doing this every month around the 4th since January. It is now May. Since I was getting help from my parents to pay this bill, I did not have access to the account information to confirm the charges went through. At the beginning of this month (May 7th), I texted them asking for an updated bill, and got no response. So I went onto their website and saw that the phone # to text has changed. So I texted the new # with the same request about an updated bill. No response. I also emailed them. Still no response. Then today, I got a letter in the mail from a debt collector where it looks as though the only charge that went through was the first one (which I did over during the same phone call where I was told I could text their number with the script above). I was receiving payment reminders from Swish through my emails as recently as March, with the debt going down with each payment. But if my debt with them was already sold, then what was I paying them for?

Let's start with the inability to give this business ZERO stars! It's been a long time since I've…read morebeen absolutely scammed, but it seems this so-called dental clinic has perfected their complete scamming of patients. After reading other reviews, unfortunately post visit, my experience was almost identical. Having returned to Austin after a 16-year absence, I was looking for a new dentist. Both of my previous dentists had retired. Trails Dental was convenient, and since I only needed preventive maintenance and cleaning, I thought why not. DO NOT MAKE THIS MISTAKE. I had given my insurance # to them in advance of the appointment and again at checkin. They had ample time to confirm coverage. ALSO, a sign at the entrance to the office promoted a $79 x-rays and cleaning offer. Wonder how many people have been scammed by that false advertising. After having a panoramic x-ray, followed by bitewings, then the hygienist (I presume, as 4 different women floated in and out during my time in the chair) proceeded to perform a 2D photographic image by placing a small hand-held wand like instrument in my mouth. Next came torture. A second person entered and began to aggressively poke my gums with a sharp instrument until I could taste nothing but blood. Rarely do my gums bleed. Not only was I gagging from the metallic taste, but no one ever offered water for me to wash out the blood. Then entered the dentist, Dr. Jessica Cicone, to explain everything. Not only did she tell me that I needed 3 crowns but that I also needed a deep cleaning. Keeping in mind that when I left my wonderful dentist in New Orleans, my teeth and gums were fine with her only keeping a watch on an old filling in one tooth, which ironically wasn't among the teeth that Trails wanted to crown. Cicone departed and in walked the 4th different person, this one to explain the costs. According to her, after insurance, my portion of the bill would be about $3,600. AGAIN, all I came in for was preventive maintenance and cleaning....covered 100% by my insurance. Declining to have the deep cleaning that day as I did not have a credit card with me, I asked for a routine cleaning. They REFUSED. That's like taking your car in for an oil change and the repairman finds a dozen other things. Even if you decline extra repairs, they still change the oil!! Insult on top of injury, the billing person detailed my portion of the crowns after insurance. Another big red flag, as I knew my policy didn't cover crowns. In the end, I left and immediately called my dental insurance company to confirm that they did not cover crowns. Nor does my policy cover deep cleaning or the 2D imaging--for which I've now received a bill for $408. At this point, my teeth still need cleaning, yet I have to either wait another 6-months to be covered by my insurance or pay out of pocket to see another dentist for x-rays and maintenance.

After moving to Austin from out of state, I needed a new dentist. Trails Dental Group was listed in…read moremy insurance Provider Directory so I made an appointment for an exam, cleaning and consultation on a chipped tooth. On the day of.my appointment, I checked in, had x-rays taken, and then met with Dr. Diehl. Up to this point, everything had gone smoothly. The office staff was great and the facility was very clean. Dr. Diehl made no attempt to connect or build report, but I kept an open mind as she moved into her exam. I've had too many exams to count over the years, but this one felt rough. It's now been seven hours since the exam and my mouth is still sore from her aggressive poking as she checked for pockets and called out numbers. I wasn't surprised to taste blood, but I did feel like I was being poked with exaggerated pressure. Then she started with her presentation. Keep in mind, I had been seeing the same dentist for a decade. We had had conversations about recommendations, particularly around a single deep pocket, but this type of cleaning (root planing and scaling) would not be covered by insurance and I had declined. My dentist monitored the pocket, but honored my decision to defer treatment and did an "above the gum-line cleaning" every six months. Now, I had let cleanings go for perhaps two years so I expected a conversation about it. During that whole time I had no decay that warranted fillings. I was not expecting what happened next. When the dust settled, she launched into a treatment plan, beginning with what is know in the world of sales (MY world) as "an assumptive close". "Here's what we're going to do:..." I immediately recognized her training and tactics. I listened and let her continue, her distant but professional manner and polished, well-chosen words dripped with every consumers nightmare of salesiness. As a Sales Leader and coach of top performing teams, I took it in with a mixure of amusement and mild annoyance. Three crowns and a mouth guard later, plus deep scaling and planing combined with laser cleaning I began to realize that i was in the wrong chair. When she finished, I was undaunted and said calmly and confidently that this was not the purpose of my visit and that I was here for a cleaning without interest at this time in these other recommendations. I was stunned by the arrogance and lack of awareness that followed! "These are not recommendations. These are requirements, those necessary to bring your mouth back to it's fullest health" she said flatly. She continued that she was acting in my interest and was unwilling to do anything less than what was outlined in.her treatment plan. Really? Did she really believe that she could violate so many fundamentals of good salesmanship and rely on the kind of approach that I would expect to find on sleazy used car "dirt lot" or a time-share hot box?? She actually thought I would roll over and cave to what now felt like professional bullying??! My mind went back to the previous week when I had taken my older Lexus with 225,000 mile to a mechanic with outstanding reviews. I expected that he might make some additional recommendations, and in the end I had gladly authorized them ALL, investing far more than I had anticipated. I saw the value, knew it was time, and he let me make the decision without pressure. This was very different. "Is this covered under my insurance?", I asked. She dodged quickly. "You can speak with the front desk about payment questions. I deal with medical questions only", she said with practiced professional curtness. "Do you have any other questions for me?" I stared her down. "Are we at an impasse?", I asked. "Are you really telling me that you are denying me treatment unless I comply with all your dictates, and your position is all or nothing?" More practiced slick professional answers like someone testifying before Congress. Arrogance hung heavy in the air as she assessed her own power-play. The short answer was yes. "Then I think we're done here and I'll see my way out." I don't tolerate bullying. Period. When leaving a bad review, I always try to lead with self-awareness, beginning with "Do I have a wrong expectation?" Nope, not this time. My body. My rules. In the end, my recommendation is "Run! Run far and fast from dental groups that appear to be owned by investor groups that are primarily concerned with sales, questionable tactics, and the bottom line above all." This was my experience here, and I have seen it as a growing trend over the years. Not all practices are like this, but I would stay far away from this one based on the way I was treated. Peace to all.

Erica, my hygienist, educated me on my gum health, and noticed signs of wear on my teeth due to clenching; which I imagine I do when I'm sleeping. Erica took photos of each tooth, measured my gums, and validated that my oral hygiene practices at home are on par. During my examination, we saw signs of decay, and there was enough time in the schedule for me to start the process of placing a crown on my tooth. From the moment Dr. James numbed me to the moment my temporary crown was placed, I was treated with the utmost care. The team remembered my son, who visited not too long ago, and were as joyful and relatable as can be. They even offered me a cozy blanket during my procedure! I mean, who does that? Pecan Park Family Dentistry does! All in all, though it was my first time at their practice, I was made to feel like family. Like I was being taken care of by my girlfriends, and I am beyond grateful to have crossed paths with them!

After more than 10 years with this practice, I'm incredibly disappointed to be writing this…read more I'm autistic, and like many neurodivergent people, I struggle with scheduling and making it to appointments. I want to be clear: I am already deeply aware of this, and I feel embarrassed and awful when it happens. Nothing feels worse than standing at the garage door with my keys in hand, frozen, shaking, overwhelmed, and filled with guilt. This isn't carelessness or laziness, it's something I actively work to manage. I also understand that missed appointments affect a business, and I am willing to accept financial penalties when appropriate. I appreciate that Pecan Park Dental has waived some missed appointment fees for me in the past. However, my most recent experience felt shaming and dismissive of my disability, and I left in tears. The morning of a scheduled appointment, I was called and told my insurance would not cover the visit because I had hit my maximum. I was told I would need to pay $540 out of pocket for a routine cleaning. I could not afford that and chose to reschedule for a future date when my insurance would cover it. At that time, I was told I would still be charged a $100 late cancellation fee, even though this cost was only communicated to me the morning of the appointment. When I returned months later for the rescheduled visit, I tried to explain that this situation resulted from an insurance and communication issue. Instead of working with me, I was repeatedly pressured in the waiting room to pay the $100 fee. I explained multiple times that I did not have the money that day. I was asked for credit card information over and over, in front of my daughter and other patients. It was humiliating. I ended up crying in the office while still being asked for payment. When I later tried to explain the situation, I was sent a chart of my missed appointments. It felt less like an attempt to understand and more like an effort to reinforce guilt. That approach isn't helpful, it adds to the shame and makes it even harder to access care. Experiences like this are exactly why many neurodivergent people avoid healthcare altogether. It becomes easier to avoid appointments than to face anxiety, shame, and financial penalties. I don't believe this is about bad intent, but it reflects a system that prioritizes policies and revenue over patient-centered care and basic compassion. After more than a decade as a loyal patient, and bringing multiple family members to this practice, I expected more understanding and professionalism. Because of this experience, I will be moving my care, along with my family's care, to a different provider. I hope this practice reflects on how it communicates with and supports patients, especially those with anxiety, autism, or other neurodivergent needs. No patient should be made to feel this way while seeking care

So after my cleaning, I went home for a little bit, and went back for the extraction. The little sucker didn't want to come out, but in the end, the dentist won that battle. I was numbed I think 3 times. Usually I can be pretty chill at the dentist, but this time I was crying, and extremely jittery. The assistant got me a blanket and rubbed my arm as the needle went in with the novocain. Once the numbing and needle part was over I was feeling a little more relaxed. It did take some tugging but it came out. I did see it after it was pulled out, molars are big, I can't believe it came out all in one piece. Happy it's over with. My review is limited exclusively to Dr. Evan John, so take from that what you will. I had no idea going in who I would see, and for that reason, I felt obligated to warn others. I found Dr. Evan John to be incredibly unprofessional and lacking in bedside manner. Further, he was not thorough and incredibly awkward, which only added to my anxiety. I have since learned (from social media, no less) that he is a brand new dentist, and maybe that explains it. Even other professionals I have spoken to have acknowledged that the bedside manner was inappropriate. I would like to give him the benefit of the doubt, I cannot excuse the experience I had. Dentist experience aside, the hygienist was fabulous, one of the best I've ever had, but it couldn't salvage the mess of my visit and the unnecessarily anxious aftermath.

Groovy Dental has an outstandingly clean office. The procedure rooms are bright and airy and they always have upbeat music playing or an option to watch something on screens they have conveniently placed above the procedure chairs. The office feels very comfortable and welcoming plus smells great. They work hard to make you feel at ease no matter how nervous you are. Billing has also been a breeze in my experience here and they always give you plenty of options when it comes to getting a procedure that fits your budget yet still gives you the best quality of life. Meaning they won't leave you with unnecessary complications or do anything that will compromise quality and comfort. They don't suggest dental work that is unnecessary and execute their procedures timely and effectively.
