Winner winner chicken dinner! Or in this case lunch...and mine was actually chicken fried steak...but my son had chicken and thought it was a winner! I visited Circle Grill with my teenagers on Mother's Day and it was delicious. Every mom left the place with a flower in hand...nice touch. The tables and booths have nameplates on them. When we asked, the server said that it marked the place where regulars usually sit. Very cute. The food gets 5 stars for sure, although the bleu cheese dressing for the salad was a little odd and the dinner salad itself (iceberg and diced tomatoes) was a bit unsophisticated for $4.25. I'm not saying I was looking for artisan lettuce and pepitas, but maybe some shredded carrot, cabbage or a little cucumber...would a crouton or two hurt anyone? Just sayin'. The fried chicken came with a public service announcement that it takes 30 minutes because it is prepared from scratch. We considered ourselves warned and my son declares that every minute of waiting was well worth it. The chicken fried steak also tasted home-made and was an extremely generous size. My go-to CFS sides are mashed potatoes and fried okra and they both satisfied. My daughter got the Circle Grill crepes with strawberries, and she was a bit underwhelmed, but it might have been because she was jealous of our amazing plates staring at her from across the table. We all loved the yeast rolls. If they'd brought them out before the food we would have filled up on them. We didn't try dessert...but we will try to save room next time. read more

They won't win a "Best Whatever in Dallas" award, but if you want a very comfortable place to sit and eat, with very good comfort food (and actual cream pie sometimes), and decent fresh coffee, this is the place. The wait staff stays on top of everything, a lot of customers have been coming here forever, and I think a few of the staff have been working here since there was a CG in Rockwall. It's not a great place to bring a date, but it's a perfect place for your extended family. read more

I've been eating at Circle Grill for years and years. As a teenager, I used to roll my eyes at having to eat surrounded by old people and tacky dive diner décor. I've since realized that the old folks have it figured out. Sunday breakfast is our usual and it doesn't come out much faster or hotter than at Circle Grill. The lovely ladies serving up this great fare are as capable as Flo at filling their arms with plates of food to make sure you eat straight from the griddle - and I'm pretty sure at least one or two served me as a sullen teen. The food is cheap and consistently good, no matter who's manning the kitchen. If you do decide to brave Sunday morning, make sure you go early. Once the first church service lets out, you're looking at a full house until early afternoon. read more

Food was about 3.5 stars, service kicked it up to 4. I took my grandmother here for Mother's Day...she loves home cooking in a greasy spoon environment. Circle Grill delivers in spades! Most of us had the meatloaf with creole sauce. The slab of meatloaf was an inch and a half thick and was so moist you didn't need the sauce...but you wanted it. It was a tomato based sauce with tons of veggies and fillet powder. Mashed potatoes were standard, green beans had some extra stuff in it which tasted similar to the meatloaf sauce, black-eyed peas tasted fresh. I didn't get to try the chicken fried steak because my Dad is super stingey with his food. It looked good, as did the catfish. The best part of the meal was the strawberry pie. The waitress kept bringing it by our table en route to other patrons. I had to have a piece. The crust was the best pie crust I've had in a long time. Strawberries were sweet and not over glazed. Whipped topping tasted heavy with cream and vanilla. Next time I go I may order two...seriously. The staff was so friendly that even my Dad was pleased. He's the guy that goes in the kitchen when the food is late to ask "What the 'heck' is going on." He's been thrown out of every Black-Eyed Pea and Chilies this side of Terrell. But he loved our waitress, who called everyone 'Baby' and 'Sweetie'. I've yet to see anyone wrangle my Dad as well as she did. Kudo's on that! Here's the history on the place. Circle Grill was owned by the Mann's of Mann Glass. They are responsible for the shiny glass on all the buildings downtown. They also own One Mann Ranch on the outskirts of Forney, and two Circle Grill restaurants. After the family patriarch passed away the restaurants were sold. This Circle Grill is under new management and is always busy. The parking lot always has cars in it. I'm glad, because I have plans to return for more pie. read more

This is a pretty decent joint for a no-frills breakfast in East Dallas; the bacon is always perfectly cooked, the eggs just as runny as medium should be, the biscuits and gravy are to die for, and the hash browns are always great, never greasy. However, I have recently been for something other than bacon and eggs and felt like I just had to review. That said - Best. Chicken. Fried. Steak. Ever. Seriously. If you find yourself hankering for some juicy, fried goodness on any given day, I don't care where you are, get yourself to Circle Grill. The breading was perfect and delicious, the meat was tender and juicy, the gravy was yummmmmy, and the mashed potatoes were perfectly seasoned. The okra was fine, nothing to blow my mind, but what it needed to be. I'm giving four instead of five stars because my dinner mate ordered the chop steak and I wasn't a fan. We tried circle grill for the first time today and had hopes that it was going to be a pleasant experience. Not only was the service and food sub par, the waitress tried to add an additional $10 on top of my total because she was most likely going to take out off the top(steal it) when I corrected the mistake it was almost as if she was aggravated because she didn't get away with it. When she took the ticket to the front I walked to the restroom and heard her whispering to the other lady trying to tell her why it was wrong/why it needed to be corrected. She was not apologetic in the least bit. I paid for what we ordered (even though it was dry and tasteless). If y'all go to circle grill do not be surprised if you run into the same issues we did, I will not be returning. read more

Quality has gone way down here. I just changed my previous five star review to a one star review. We ordered two scrambles and my husband's farmers scramble was super dried out and cold. My hashbrowns were totally dried out and inedible. They no longer serve real butter nor cook hashbrowns in real butter so now they have zero flavor. We had to send two things back. Also our biscuits were cold and dry. We came on a Sunday at noon. Service was not in any hurry to please. Boo! We drove out of the way to come here but won't again. read more

Dinner tonight was a disaster. My son and I ordered chicken fried steaks with mashed potatoes and okra. The okra and steaks were burned as they apparently spent too much time in the fryer. The steak also had grease running out of it. The mashed potatoes had a very odd texture, I couldn't tell if they were real potatoes or if they were instant potatoes. My wife's BLT was OK and the granddaughter's pancakes and bacon we're OK but hard to ruin those items. Should have ordered breakfast foods. My son believes the cook intentionally ruined our meal because we walked in at 7:30 and they close at 8 PM. I hope that's not the case. If I return I will never order chicken fried steak again and cannot recommend it to anyone else. read more

I really wanted this to be good. I was a regular customer at the old Circle Grill when the Evans owned it. They had the best chicken fried steak, Fried Chicken , and yes Mexican food. Today I decided to try the fried chicken since I've tried the chicken fried steak here before and it was good. The chicken look good when it came out after waiting 30 minutes for them to cook it. I ordered the all drumsticks. They looked great when they came out. However, after biting into the first one the meat around the bone was pure black. I'm not exactly sure what causes the meat next to the Bone to be black like this but it also had a funny flavor and a little bit of a funny smell. I did eat the first chicken leg and carried the other three home for my doggies. I will probably go back there again but I will not order the fried chicken . Also, I am going to investigate why a piece of chicken would be black next to the Bone. I have done a little research. Most chickens used for frying are small, young chickens with smaller bones. When a chicken in frozen and then refrozen and then thawed again a lot of times the bone will get a small crack and bone marrow and blood will leak into the meat. This cause it to be black around the bone and meat. The way to prevent this is to use fresh chicken and don't refreeze. read more

I was a little nervous when I walked up to Circle Grill Restaurant. There were an awful lot of slow-walking, dirty people kind of skulking around the place like it was a homeless shelter. I had to remind myself that I was simply in a part of town that I rarely visit, and this is probably just a normal day in the area. "Don't panic," I thought to myself, "Just try and blend in." So, I slowed my gait and breathed with my mouth. I think I might have farted just to seal the deal on my character. It worked because I made it to the door without being hassled. When I walked in, I was whisked away to the diner in David Lynch's Twin Peaks. The scene couldn't have been more perfectly furnished by a Hollywood art director; vinyl bar stools with backs, a revolving pie showcase, fake wood siding on the booths and tacky carpet all assaulted my senses at once and almost made me feel like I was supposed to say my line when the hostess greeted us. Even the staff and patrons looked like someone had picked them out just to be in this little cinematic moment that had been created for me. Let me tell ya, they don't make em like this anymore. When I sat down at the table, I saw a little notice taped to the wall of my booth "We will be closed next Sunday for a private filming." How about that? Somebody else had admired the location for the set piece that it was and would shoot their movie there. I felt very validated in my initial observation. I wondered what kind of movie it would be? I pictured myself as the main character... perhaps the town sheriff in a period piece about the mid 70's. I walk in, thumbs in my belt, mustache out past my nose. I sit at my usual booth, Thelma promptly brings me coffee and apple pie (the usual). I tip my hat and give her a "Thank ya kindly," with a little swat on the rear, not because I'm into her, but because sexual harassment was both expected and welcomed back in those days. My deputy, who also happens to be the town idiot, comes in and fills me in on the body that was just found down at the rock quarry. I throw 50 cents on the table and table and leave - mid-pie. And so starts the murder mystery. (Sigh.....) On to the food. I kept it simple: a turkey and swiss with some okra on the side. My friend got the chicken fried steak. My sandwich was fine, just fine, I mean... it's a turkey sandwich with cheese, if you can't handle that, maybe you shouldn't be in the food business. But the chicken fried steak... The chicken fried steak was ENORMOUS and had that food porn look to it. You know the kind I'm talking about -- like where they do the slow motion shots of the gravy drizzling over the impossibly perfect looking food? Yeah, it actually LOOKED like that. It didn't have that greasy, thin sort of fried breading that we've all experienced elsewhere. No, this thing looked like a damned golden cumulonimbus cloud on a plate. I was impressed. I saw some of the other plates flying around and they all had that similar high quality look to them. I realized that this place was the REAL DEAL. A real home style diner that was a credit to the genre in both look AND food. The service was prompt and friendly too, so don't worry about that. The Circle Grill pretty much rocked my socks. And you know how I found it -- or even knew that it existed for that matter? The Yelp app's "nearby" feature. Otherwise I would have meekly puttered back to uptown in my hybrid for a more trendy lunch of sushi or perhaps of panini of some sort. Effin' lame! Thank God for technology and for the good reviews on Yelp! This is how you get customers in the 21st century! If I lived closer, I think I would come back for lunch and dinner regularly. Ugh! I've been dragging my feet trying to avoid writing this because I really really hate writing bad reviews. My favorite places to eat are Mom & Pop restaurants that have been a mainstay in the area for years and years. There's got to be a reason for that right? Most of the time it's because the owner really loves the business and has some real down home specialties on their menu. The kind of specials that draw people in. I use to work for a restaurant like that. We had a cook, but our owner Joe use to make the soups and add his own touches to the food that made eating there special. So my disappointment after reading so many great reviews has been unexplainable. First off it was Friday evening, the senior crowd had most likely eaten early and were settling into bed by 7 pm, so the place was not too busy. I was seated and got the specials. I decided on pot roast, thinking I would get a savory melt in your mouth piece of meat with potatoes and carrots. When I ordered I was told I could choose one other vegetable and I was about to choose carrots but the waitress told me that the pot roast had carrots maybe I might like something else? So I chose corn. When my meal came the waitress put it down and ran off to do other things. I sat there a good 5 to 10 trying to catch her attention because I had no silverware to eat with. By the time she finally got them my dinner was lukewarm but the worst was yet to come. While I sat waiting for my silverware I noticed that the gravy was an odd pinkish gray color and somewhat transparent like it was made with corn starch it didn't look very appetizing and I found out it tasted like paste, salt just made it taste like salty paste. The first bite of the pot roast and I almost spit it out. How can anyone serve pot roast from a can in a restaurant without doctoring it up with a little garlic and bay leaf? Geez! The potatoes were also out of a can as well as the corn, the carrots that come with the pot roast were almost non existent one piece about a half inch long and a chip of another piece. For what I paid I could have opened the cans at home and done a better job at doctoring the inedible mess and fed 20 people. Except for the silverware incident the staff was very nice, a woman who was not my waitress brought me some corn bread and when I noticed the one single serving of butter looked like someone had put their thumb in it she cheerfully got me a whole plate of individual butter "like" spread. I was somewhat dismayed that the spread was made of canola oil which is a fancy word for rapeseed a poisonous plant that when eaten will strip the shield off your nerves, oh fun, and people believe when the FDA tells them it's healthy! Only one other thing bothered me and this is not the restaurants fault, but I just feel like I need to say this. As a widow I often eat alone. I can't tell you what I would give to have my husband sit across from me and eat a meal and what joy it would bring. Which brings me to what was so sadly annoying. An older couple came in and sat behind me. From the time they sat down the woman could not stop playing Candy Crush on her phone. Yeah I know the sound well and I play too. She would look at the menu then go back to playing, the waitress had to wait for her to finish while her husband had already ordered, then she stopped for a moment and went back to playing. This woman didn't put that damn thing down for the whole meal and we could all hear the sounds from her phone. But the really sad part was that her poor husband sat there with no one to talk to. I looked over and caught his eye and smiled sympathetically and everything in the fiber of my being wanted to go over to that woman and tell her how lucky she was to have her husband sitting across from her at that moment, except that I was almost ready to cry. So if you just can't put that cell phone down when someone you love is sitting right across from you, just think what it might be like if they were to die tonight, would you still find your phone more interesting? read more

This is what you want a diner to be--actually, it may be a little lighter and cleaner than you want a diner to be. Greatness w/breakfast: its the only meal I've had here (but have had it a few times). Here's the tip: whether it comes with your meal or not, ask for a side of the salsa verde. It seems to be made fresh and whatever you spoon it onto becomes instantly even better than it was before! Otherwise, Circle Grill is as solid a diner as you'll ever visit! I realize that butter is a hot commodity, but to not have ANY? In the whole place? Eeps! What do they cook with? The breakfast burrito was full of raw veggies, not the softened, tender ones. The eggs over-medium were cooked perfectly, but they tasted...bad. How do you make fried eggs taste bad? The grits were congealed into lumps, the coffee was terrible. I'd like to say that the service was good enough to make up for the crappy food, but the lifer/waitress that served us had such a puss! Like, not even a smile at all. It made it a little awkward. deno jogged my memory about Circle Grill. Dead on with the 3 1/2 stars but the service is so genuine and nice. I think some of those folks have been there since I was a little kid!!! So deno, I'll add a few more thoughts into yours. I grew up not far from Circle Grill and my mother worked at a hospital on Weekend Nights. We spend many a Sunday evening eatting at the Circle Grill growing up and I was heartbroken when I came back and heard Mr. Mann had passed and the restaurants sold (I was away for a few years). My wife who is my culinary sidekick on most adventurous and I decided to give the "new" Circle Grill a "taste test" to see if it was indeed as good as the old. I must say walking into the place brought back many happy childhood memories. I could not shut up while we ordered. My wife was shaking her head when I ordered the Cheese Enchiladas. Now, this is something of a unique Tex-Mex treat at this location. Imagine a serving platter. Now about four tablespoons of Pinto Beans on one End. Then put three enchilada's on the plate. The plate is now TOTALLY covered. Drown it all in a homemade chili sauce. Toss a slice of white onion and jalapano pepper on top! These monster enchiladas took me back a few years. It tasted like I was 12 again and eatting them for the first time. They are loaded with Cheese and Onions and absolutely delicious!!! The pinto's melt in with the chili sauce and get this chili sauce infusion with the meaty beans that is so delicious. It is a HUGE platter and I ate every bite. I even had room for a slice of cherry pie. I'm a cherry pie snob, my wife would say. I expect a diner to have cherry pie! Unfortunately, I have never found a cherry pie at a restaurant that measures up to Circle Grills WONDERFUL pie. The cherries was just sweet enough and still tart enough to make the pie have a tang. The crust was, as Deno said, the best part. You can almost taste the shortening and flavor in this wonderful, flacky goodness. Apparently I'm about to speak some heresy, but I was very disappointed with my recent lunch at the Circle Grill. I was in the area(not my normal part of town) and turned to Yelp to see where I should have lunch. Usually I'm never let down by Yelp reviews but unfortunately I was regarding Circle Grill. I went with the Chicken Fried Steak, mashed potatoes and kernel corn. The gravy for the CFS was not very flavorful(other than the taste of salt). The CFS was large, but tough and not very tasty either. The mashed potatoes were also bland and I couldn't tell if they were made from scratch or some kind of mix. At least the corn bread and rolls were OK and the server was very friendly. read more

I visited the Circle Grill for the first time and was really pleasantly surprised. I don't eat a lot for breakfast so I often opt for Eggs Benedict and I am thrilled to report that CG did not let me down--I'd go as far to say that they're the best poached eggs I've had to date. It's a simple dish, but simple dishes can go wrong. Fortunately for me and my taste buds, that wasn't the case here. The yolk was perfectly creamy, paired with a delicious pile of ham on a soft and toasty English muffin. I opted for a side of fruit instead of the potatoes and it was fresh and flavorful. For a Sunday morning, the place was hoppin', but there was plenty of seating and there were many large groups of families. This is more of a sit down and relax kind of place (read: orders don't come out very fast, but that gives you time to visit with the folks you're having breakfast with, right?). Overall, I really enjoyed dining here and I'm looking forward to coming back for some more of those delicious eggs. read more

I have lived in Dallas all of my life, 56 years and the servers at Circle Grill are all Ways consistent no matter who you get. The food is always good. They truly have the best breakfast in town.
