Can't believe I haven't reviewed City BBQ yet!! I guess I just sort of assumed that EVERYBODY already loves City, so there wasn't any need to say more. Well I'm saying it now, this place is a meat lover's paradise. Vegetarians - think of it this way. If you love Quinoa, then this place has every kind of delicious quinoa you could want and every dish is done to the highest standards of quinoa goodness. Without repeating other reviewers positive comments about the brisket and pulled pork, I will only say that the Smoked Sausage is one of the best things they serve and it' is debatably in third place in the City BBQ meat category! All of the sides are tasty - highlights include green beans, baked beans, corn pudding. Banana pudding, if you're in to that. I'm not huge into BBQ. My husband loves it. We used to have BBQ pretty frequently when we lived in Texas so I figured we had to give this place a try. I was pleasantly surprised. It was pretty packed inside but the service was great! Everyone who worked there seemed like they were in a good mood and they were friendly. It was super speedy too. We didn't have to wait more than a minute. It was a very laid back and positive atmosphere. There was even a band playing. They seemed pretty cool. I was pleased with the food too. I got pulled pork, side salad, and Mac and cheese. My favorite part was the giant side salad. It was very fresh. The chipotle ranch dressing was different and delicious. The Mac and cheese was good but nothing special. The pulled pork was also pretty good. I don't think it's the best I've ever had. I think it was because of the bun. It seemed too squishy and kind of diluted the flavor of the meat. I'll just ditch the bun next time. The BBQ sauces were decent as well. City Barbeque makes some really delicious smoked meats. My fiance and I split the City Sampler, which was really the perfect amount. All of it was super good- he loved the sausage and the pork and I loved the brisket and the turkey (I know, seems lame but that smoked turkey is bomb). Their sauces are also really good - with a range from spicy to sweet. Sides are good too, but I have to say I did not love the mac and cheese. It fell a little flat in my opinion, which is sad, but you throw a little pork and a little bbq sauce in there and it jazzes it right up (but to be honest, I would likely not order it again). The Texas toast is also SUPER good - a little garlicky and the right texture to give you some contrast. If I could recommend one side over others it would absolutely be the baked beans. SO freaking good. The line can be a little overwhelming during peak times because the ordering and pick up space is pretty tight, but there is plenty of room in the rest of the restaurant to eat in (or take it to go!). read more

In the area on business and a couple of the guys we talked to from here recommended City Barbeque. I was afraid this was going to be a Famous Dave's type mockery. I've had BBQ in Memphis, North Carolina and Arkansas and while I am no expert on BBQ, this here is some of the best I have ever had anywhere. We had a large group, about 15 of us, and we were worried there would not be enough seating to accommodate us, well there was. We were also worried that it was going to take forever to get thru the line that was to the door. Well it didn't take long for that line to move to the counter. I grabbed 2 Land Shark beers from the large tub of ice with other assorted beer and soft drinks by the casher. The menu is a large wooden painted board hanging over their heads. I ordered the North Carolina pork sandwich (half pound of meat) with vinegar and cole slaw on it. My 2 sides were mac and cheese and potato salad. By the time I was done paying for my order my 2 sides were up on a tray waiting for my sandwich which arrived 10 seconds later. FAST, and fresh and good. Oh my goodness. My sandwich was piled high with fresh tasty tangy pulled pork covered in slaw just the way I like it. The sesame seed bun managed to hold it all together, not sure how. Some pieces fell out here and there but I scooped them up. My sides were perfect. Potato salad was cold and chunky, the mac and chee was hot and creamy, neither was too salty. I devoured everything, in no particular order, finishing my meal long before anyone else in our group. We put 3 tables together so we could all sit and eat together. Everyone else had assorted offerings from ribs and beans to meat samplers and so on. Everyone was completely stuffed and satisfied. The tables had plenty of sauces and paper towels handy but all I needed were paper towels. No sauce needed here, my sandwich was on point with no extras necessary. Sandwich was 6.29, 2 sides were 2.99 and beers were 3.50 ea. Damn good prices for wonderful food. I liked the blues music playing in the background. The clientele ranged from suit and tie guys to mothers and their children in tow as well as college students getting together for a bite. It also appeared that their call ahead - take out business was jumping. This was really my kinda place. Down home simple good food. I've been hesitant to write a review of City Barbeque, because it's useless. Everyone already knows City Barbeque is the best barbecue in Columbus, period. City Barbeque is my favorite casual restaurant. I've never met anyone whose opinion I trust who doesn't love it, including at least one person who doesn't eat pork or beef. When I go to City Barbeque, I get the pulled pork "naked," i.e. just a big pile of pork, and load it up with "brush fire" BBQ sauce and about a pound of the delicious pickles offered in serve-yourself fashion. It certainly doesn't "need" that stuff though, as it's amazingly succulent and delicious plain. I usually add on a side of fries (always hot and crisp and lots of 'em), though I've tried many of the other sides (hush puppies, baked beans, mac-n-cheese, Carolina slaw) and they're all top-notch. I'm usually too full for dessert (and usually go home with enough meat for a sandwich the next day), but the banana pudding is probably the best pudding I've ever eaten. Finally, the sweet tea is the best in town. There's some thoughtful touches here, like full rolls of paper towels on each table; six flavors of sauce, also on each table; and even two flavors of sauce offered WARM, along with the pickles, red onions, jalepenos and lots of other fixings. I was in town for work and as always, I like to ask the locals where they like to eat or suggest I should eat at. The nurses from Orthopedic One kept recommending this place to me and so for lunch I decided to go here with my cousin. Being from Texas, it's hard to find good BBQ outside of Texas! When we first walked in the guy working the register, who also looks like the owner/manager of the restaurant gave us a warm and friendly welcome and asked for his suggestion as to what is popular here. He recommended the brisket. We told him that we were from Texas and that we love moist brisket and he told us we wouldn't be disappointed and in fact it's up there will Rudy's. We trusted him and went with the brisket with a side of gumbo and macaroni and cheese. Also we had to get sweet tea to go with our BBQ! They had 4 different types of sauces. Their original BBQ, spicy BBQ, sweet BBQ, and some kind of vinegary mustard. Personally I didn't like the mustard but the best BBQ sauce was the original but even then the sauce was just OK. When we received our order the brisket was pretty dry. It was as if we got the outside cut of the brisket where it was really dry and hard, which was a little disappointing. The gumbo was really good, maybe a little too much salt but it was tasty and the macaroni and cheese was decent, nothing special. So the manager walks over to our table and wanted to know what we thought of his BBQ and we gave him our honest opinions and told him that we expected it to be a little bit more moist. He told us he may have a resolution and left to the kitchen. Upon returning he came back with a more moist cut of the brisket which made things better but it still doesn't compare to what we've had in Texas! Its good for being BBQ in Ohio though! read more

Now suuuuuure, it's true, I guess I've never had real "down South" barbecue. I've had the crunchy, horrible stuff we made at home that was never even remotely anything but burnt to a crisp, and I've had what's been voted "best ribs in Connecticut" for some-odd years in a row, but come on- best ribs in Connecticut? Really? And sure, I'm certain plenty of people would pooh-pooh City Barbecue, too, but I am a huge fan. Let me tell you a little story about City Barbecue: I was suffering from a mild addiction to this place after first tried it, and when I went back once, tragedy!- horrror!- they were out of ribs. I almost walked out then, but I took a desperate gamble and got the half-chicken dinner. And let. me. tell. you. That was the best chicken I've ever had and the one time they've been out of ribs since, I was more than happy to "settle" for the chicken. The stuff slides off the bone like water off a duck's ass and was as delicious a hunk of poultry as I've ever had. Their sides are good too (I really like the green beans with generous helpings of bacon), but they are definitely second fiddle. Eighteen-year-old vegetarian me wouldn't have been very happy at City Barbecue. Screw 'im. Do yourself a favor and try the spicy bbq sauce. It's not as hot as you might fear, and it's got a lot more flavor than the original. City Barbecue is one of those places that I suggest whenever someone asks my opinion on where to eat. I can't believe that I hadn't gone to City Barbeque before the other day! I'm not really big on BBQ, but my dad is a huge fan of this place and he always brings it up when he's in town, so I finally caved on his last visit and went. I was actually expecting sit-down waiter service, so I was surprised that it's actually more like fast food and you order when you walk in and get your food before sitting. Either way, this food is GOOD. I got the pulled chicken sandwich, mac & cheese and hush puppies. It was way too much to eat, so I ended up taking some of it home. I was watching Diners Drive-Ins and Dives over the weekend and of course two of the episodes prominently featured barbecue. Seeing all of this beautifully barbecued "other" white meat made me hungry for some City 'Que.... I love to smell the air at this location - fresh smoked meat fills it as you drive up. In this economy sensitive time, City has started offering some specials - they now have a lunch special with a smaller sandwich and two sides for $6.99 to 7.99, depending on which meat you choose. They also offer $4.00 off samplers on Mondays - which feature 3-4 meats with sides - the portions are ample and this is a great deal if you're really hungry. On Tuesdays - it's a "Buck a Bone" - a great way to try their ribs with your favorite smoked meat. Today I was really hungry for pulled pork - and I ordered the half pound sandwich. I also ordered mac and cheese, green beans with bacon, and cukes. and onions. I loaded up on some of the free refrigerated pickles, sat down, and doused my sandwich first with the Carolina Vinegar sauce dotted with red pepper flakes. I then piled on some pickles and doused it in the mustard Barbeque sauce. Finally I topped with the bun, cut in half, and turned it upside down. The bun softens from the meat juices and the application of vinegar - it was delicious. I've had the brisket and I love it. The half chicken is the largest half chicken I've ever seen, beautifully barbecued, tender and falling off the bone. But my favorite time after time is the pulled pork - mixed with that salty darkened bark.... The sides are generally good - with some outstanding and some mediocre ones....The green beans, collards with pork, fresh cut fries, brisket beans, and the cukes with onions are fantastic. The potato salad and cole slaw are bland to me - they are perked nicely with a squirt of mustard barbecue sauce. The hush puppies are a packaged mix - dense, and the corn bread (me thinks) is not baked on he premises - in its perfect little loaf shape. They also offer a fresh fruit (for an upcharge) and a tossed salad - but who wants a salard with their 'que? I guess maybe someone from Kansas City..... The mac and cheese is pretty bland and rubbery as well - why do barbecue joints think that they have to make mac and cheese with Velveeta or American cheese? I've had better stuff from Stouffer's...even Lean Cuisine.... In reality I would give them a 4.5 - because of the mac and cheese and the bland salads - but if you want some delicious meat - GO. I was really craving bbq and wanting to get out of the house led to coming here. The hubs and I are super undecided when it comes to picking just 1 thing, so we got the Judges Sampler. The amount of food was insane. 1/4chicken, 1/2 rack ribs, pulled pork, and beef brisket just for the meats. Then we had two sides, greens w/pork and hush puppies. Plus they throw in 2 slices of Texas toast. Good lord there was so much food. The chicken was phenomenal, super tender falls right off the bone. Super moist and packed with smokey flavor. The brisket was pretty stellar as well. I'm always a fan of the pulled pork because it basically melts in your mouth. It's also great to find a place that has a South Carolina style mustard based bbq sauce. A little on the spicier side, but I liked it. All in all, a great experience and plenty of leftovers to take home for lunch tomorrow. read more

The best barbecue in the city, no question about it! I don't think I've ever tried anything here that is less than fantastic. The pulled pork, beef brisket, smoked sausage, pulled chicken, and smoked chicken breast are all my personal favorites, plus greens, potato salad, hush puppies and fries for side items. They probably have the best french fries in the city. The regular sauce is perfect and the Brush Fire adds some more heat, if that's your thing. I also like the Carolina style, but only if you're a vinegar fan. The Henderson location is my favorite because it's a little more unique and doesn't feel generic. The turkey had a smokey smell and was drier than the brisket. Pulled pork & ribs were smoked, moist and wonderful. The sausage was also tasty. Green beans appeared to be boiled with bacon, they were bland and over cooked. The Corn Pudding was like a piece of corn bread that was overly wet, very good. City Barbeque is a wonderful, fun and relaxed BBQ joint. I was initially impressed when I walked in with the awesome barbeque aroma filling the air. We went in a large group after a Agora, but despite our group size we still got our food quickly and a table to fit us all. A note to mention, City barbeque only does so many ribs a day. Why? Because they take a long time! So, sometimes you can get them, but if they're sold out you might be able to get them or wait 30 minutes or so. The BBQ sauce is on the tables, so you can put however little or much you want on your meat. The spicy is the best! City Barbeque is the place to go if you want great food without having to cook it for hours and hours yourself. Actually, I think it tastes much better than if I even attempted to make it! read more

When I was pregnant, I was craving BBQ everyone directed us here, well I didn't get to try it until the day I had my son needless to say it didn't stay down =( my body just couldn't handle the awesome taste. Anyways we decided to try it again tonight this time being my real first time trying it. We got there and ordered I almost decided against because my daughter was being rather rambunctious and I wanted to sit down right away but we went through with it. We had told the lady to hold our order because the credit card we had decided to lock us out (stupid bank they are a very stupid bank.) so we had to call them and they wanted to dispute with us over the phone in the middle of a restaurant. Well the cashier didn't hold the order fast enough and the food came up that fast. We told them we had to run home (at least I was going to) to get our other card to pay for dinner but they told us it was on them since they didn't hold it. I was in shock because most places just woulda been like whatever your problem have some cold food when you get back. The food was very good though I love bbq and it was just great. My daughter who is a very picky eater not only ate her food but she stole half of her dads fries too! So we were impressed by not only the food but the customer service when we had issues. Seriously some of the best bbq I've had around these parts. Went here with 3 other people and every single person left a happy camper. I got the brisket and a friend of mine got the pork and we shared so we could try the different meats. Both were reallly good. The brisket was tasty IMO, albeit a little drier and not as moist as the pork, but this is to be expected. The cornbread was really delicious as well, but the fact that we got a batch fresh from the oven may have helped :) I will admit, I had driven past this place tons a hundred times and never thought twice about it. Lesson learned to never judge a restaurant based solely on the building. I will say you will probably get a little messy eating in, lots of sticky barbecue sauces everywhere and really not a "nice sit down" place, rather some tables solely for sitting and eating. You get your own silverware (if desired) and the sandwiches and sides aren't even given to you on plates. They throw them all on wax paper and then throw those on a serving platter. You don't even sit down and have a waiter some to you, rather you walk up and order, pay, get your food, and then find a table. There are 3 pots of barbecue sauces at the condiment table (a sweet bbq sauce, the traditional, and the warmer brushfire sauce). If you like spicy food, go for the brushfire. It's still not even uncomfortably hot or anything, it just tastes better. I will definitely go back if I'm craving some hard core bbq, and would get the brisket or pulled pork again. I am a Barbeque fan. Not so much as to call myself an expert or snob, but definitely a big fan. City Barbeque has the best Brisket I have ever experienced. Flawlessly slow cooked, the meat is perfectly tender, has a pronounced smoke ring and a flavorful bark. They carve your serving off the whole brisket after you order. The sides are good, but not as stunning at the brisket. I had the fried and green beans. The beans were quite flavorful, but a bit over cooked for my tastes. The fries were good, but nothing too special. The baked beans looked good and had brisket in the beans too. Any bbq fans in the area owe themselves a pilgrimage to City Barbeque. read more

Makes me sad to be an Ohio native when I see all these 5 star reviews. Pretty obvious Ohio is not BBQ country. Had my third and final meal here with a coworker the other day. I ordered a beef brisket sandwich, fries, and slaw. First the brisket. They didn't bother to trim the fat off of it, and it was almost totally devoid of a pink smoke ring, and it didn't have a crispy outer crust on it at all. It was much more like a fatty pot roast sandwich than a BBQ beef brisket sandwich, no smoke flavor at all, 2/5. The cole slaw was sweet and vinegary, and yes that's as gross as it sounds, 1/5. The fries weren't crispy, and they looked weird, but tasted average, 3/5. I spent just under $10 for this meal, and my sandwich looked like it came on a dinner roll, roughly 40% as big as what you would receive from Ray Ray's Hog Pit (which utterly owns this place) for the same price. The only thing I can say positive is they got some heated crockpots for their more popular sauces, so big ups for that. Save your pennies for the weekends kids and go to Ray Ray's instead. read more

BBQ is the type of food that people act like you need certain credentials to review. Well, I'm not sure whether I'm a BBQ expert or not, but I know I like City Barbeque. As far as I know, they smoke their meats in-house and the result is so tender and juicy that I just can't imagine a better way. I also like that I get to add my own sauce. I go for a small plop of the spicy mustard, and I don't feel like my meat is drowning in sugar. Kudos, I love the control and the lack of mystery to the actual meat texture. I almost never eat in at this location-- it's our go-to spot for picking up a meal for the entire family and eating it on the patio or inside after a long day of yard work (I usually volunteer to go get the grub, rather than work). So, I'm always getting the bulk "family style" meal with tons of sides. Speaking of sides. I love these. Corn pudding is so freaking good. With the family-size orders, they kill you a little on the buns. The buns are a bit overpriced. That's really my only gripe as far as grab-and-go. Sure, I prefer Ray Ray's given the choice, but I won't EVER turn down some City Barbeque. read more

Best BBQ in town. I'm from Cincinnati and was raised in Montgomery Inn, but this is better. The ribs fall off the bone. The brisket is my favorite--not too fatty. The turkey is juicy and the pulled pork is really good. I'm not a fan of the sausage, but my husband loves it. The chicken is good but not what I come for. As for sides skip the corn bread (too much baking powder) and go for the hush puppies or Texas toast. The green beans and kale are delicious, the baked beans have big chunks of brisket in them. When I used to live in Columbus, City BBQ was one of my favorite stops for dinner, because both the BBQ and the sides were excellent. I haven't lived in OH for 8+ years, but I go back for a visit now and then. I was there recently for a close friend's wedding, and City BBQ catered the reception. It was AMAZING! To begin, they had a WHOLE PIG there, and they were pulling the pork and putting it into the serving trays right at the buffet table. The sauce was sooooo good. Built in an old donut shop and expanded, City BBQ serves the best brisket I have tried in Columbus. I really like the brisket sandwich with a side of the hot BBQ sauce. The meat is usually tender and moist, without a lot of fat on it. The pulled pork, ribs, sausage and chicken are just OK. I was not a big fan of the chicken salad. The sides are not so good. The potato salad is bland, the hush puppies and corn muffins are often very dry, and the fries limp and greasy. After waiting until 6 I called and was told my order would be brought "right out". After waiting another 10 minutes I called and asked for a manager who again told me my order would be "right out". We moved here from Charlotte, NC in January. I thought I'd never love BBQ again, but have fallen for City Barbeque. It's truly excellent. I think the pulled pork is their weakest link. The pulled pork in the South, especially the Eastern Carolina style (vinegar based sauce, no tomatoes) is truly better down there. That said, City Barbeque has really exceptional brisket and ribs. City Barbecue is delicious. The sauces and sides are all top notch, almost gourmet quality. I had the chicken sandwich, which was marinated in some kind of yummy sauce. The sides - baked beans and potato salad - was yum yums. Cool interior, too, and great service. The guy at the counter gave me a free soda as it was my first time. Good stuff at a fair price. Everything on the menu is really good, but I'm a sucker for their brisket, pulled pork and green beans. This stuff is seriously good. Nothing beats their original sauce. Guy Fieri could put it on one of his flip-flops and he'd whorf it down in three seconds and proclaim it to be the best thing he's ever had. Not only that, you'd believe him, too. Dine-in and carryout services are available, and you can order in bulk if you like for carryout. They also sell their sauces so you can have your favorites at home. It's almost as good as homemade. Food is always excellent but service can be horrible. These guys know how to do bbq. I lived in North Carolina - low country - for 3 years and have never found anyone do pork this good around here besides here. Also, the brisket is outstanding. Besides the food, the service is extremely spotty. I think they must pay bottom of the barrel wages or something. Sometimes they are friendly but I can't tell you how many times I've had really rude service or just plain dis-interested service. Maybe the managers are over-worked and underpaid. Anyways, it keeps me always thinking of other options if I don't want to deal with over-worked, under-paid attitudes; but I get there at least once every couple of months. read more

So good. Great meat (love the pulled pork), great sauces, great sides, really bad "flow". The line will frequently be out the door, and in October-March in Ohio, that's some cold stuff! Being from the south I've had my share of BBQ, and City BBQ UA is definitely among the best I've had. I'm not a sweet sauce guy, so mixing the spicy sauce and the original sauce makes the perfect sauce! (They also have a sweet sauce and mustard sauce, too if you're into that - not my style) Totally worth a visit. You get tons of food for the money and the employees are very nice. I've been to this location (Upper Arlington) and the Centerville location, and this is the better of the two. Has that definite original feel (which makes sense, it is the original). A couple locals recommended this place a few months ago. We finally got around to trying it this afternoon. We ordered the Deluxe City Sampler and a few sides. First the good: The Texas toast and macaroni and cheese were awesome. Sweet tea and cornbread were pretty good. Now the bad: Unfortunately, we didn't care a lot for the bbq. I didn't like the ribs. The meat should be tender enough to pull away from the bones with a fork, but I had a hard time cutting some of the ribs apart with a knife. The meat was too tough. The brisket was dry. The pulled pork was ok but not great. I tried 3 different sauces: original, brush fire, and sweet. The fire wasn't the least bit hot. I was hoping for something a little more. I'm not sure which one I liked best. They were all just OK. I felt the value was pretty good. We got a lot of food for a decent price and had leftovers to bring home. I probably won't recommend this place to friends. While some of the sides were pretty good, this is a BBQ joint, and it's suppose to be all about the meat. I still may come by sometime for a carry-out mac n cheese. read more

I am from Milwaukee, WI and was in town for the weekend visiting family who recommended City BBQ. Now, I know its not true southern BBQ but for Columbus, OH its some damn good BBQ BIG PORTIONS, we went back several times over just a few days. We had the sampler platter and the ribs and the chicken. The chicken is AMAZING, the brisket was super tender and the pulled pork was delicious. The ribs are HUGE but a little on the dry side. The side are great too. Try the hush puppies, potato salad and peach cobbler. read more
