My husband got the pick two meats meal with beef brisket and chicken and loved it. He chose the corn pudding and baked beans as his sides and the corn pudding was my fave!!!! If the free smells driving buy don't get you, the pictures certainly should. This new quick eat gem is a welcome addition to the Fairlawn area. I've never been a fan of local competitor Old Carolina but there has never been much of a choice when it comes to low and slow barbecue around Akron... until now. This place is truly mind blowing. Don't worry about traveling to Kansas City or Memphis to get good barbecue. It's now in our backyard. The pulled pork will knock your socks off. All of their sides are exceptional. The bartender didn't even acknowledge us, because he had an issue with my friend, who didn't left him a tip the last time she was there due to his poor customer service. I wish he would had told us right away he wasn't going to service us instead of ignoring us. When she asked him if he could take our order, his reply was no I don't work for free. Get out. My friend was like are you serious I didn't do anything wrong. He was like I don't care get out or I will call the cops. Before we can leave he did call the cops. I was looking forward to some comfort food, but unfortunately I only received disappointment. The sides were a complete let down. I had the wettest French fries in my life, they were just a clump of oily potatoes. That was followed by what appeared to be hamburger bun garlic toast. The Mac and cheese was definitely basic bland velveta with milk added until sauce consistently was reached. Additionally my iced tea was past its prime by a long shot, probably made first thing in the morning and left at room temp. We have ate here twice now and the food was great each time. I got the city sampler and my husband got the judges sampler. The bigger the meal you get, the better deal you get. The smoked turkey is our absolute favorite. The pulled pork, beef brisket, and chicken are a close second! Even the Texas toast and corn bread are amazing. We love their green beans and baked beans. The smell was divine! I went with the recommendation of the young man at the register. I wasn't a fan of the beans or s'more dessert cup, but the brisket & potato salad made up for it. I had a craving for BBQ and City BBQ and Catering didn't disappoint! The smell of BBQ as we entered the restaurant was infectious and increased the cravings for all things BBQ! The cashier was very helpful with answering questions regarding the menu and very friendly. The pulled pork sandwich was full of flavor and a very generous portion. The fries were freshly made and hot; the green beans were equally tasty. I also had a fresh lemonade which was great tasting as well. If you like your brisket sliced, this is not the place for you. I dislike places that do not slice their brisket because I feel its a coverup for their lack of skill at serving up that cut. It's more like pulled brisket and burnt ends mixed together and served as brisket while also offering burnt ends. Go to Old Carolina for brisket. I placed an online order for the mother load and then it's supposed to be enough to serve 6. I was hosting less than that so I figured what I had ordered would suffice. Boy was I wrong. It comes with 6 sides and the various meats so I was pretty excited and it seemed like a good deal. Upon pickup, I see a big bag with a big tray on the bottom but three small baggies on top. The guy goes over my order and says everything's in there. I'm confused but okay. I get home, pull everything out and the sides are so small. They are like one serving size. Is it one side per person? And one meat portion per person? I open up the meat tray and it's laughable. Why use such a big tray for such little meat? Half of the tray is empty. That's how bad it is. This certainly does not feed 6 people unless like I said, it's 1 side per person and then I meat per person. You also get 3 Texas toast and 3 corn bread. I like family style and do not enjoy the American way of one person gets one plate of only one thing so this did not appeal to me at all. If all the meats and sides were to be eaten family style, it would be everyone licking their flavored fork or spoon and that's it. It's bad when the Mac and cheese sucks. It was edible but nothing great. Mac and cheese at giant eagle taste better. Sauces also came with the order and I opted for the spicy and original. The spicy was, well....not spicy or dare I say, white people spicy, and the original was....original I guess. Won't ever return again when Old Carolinas is up the road. It was a catering order for 20-24 people and it was cancelled just 45 min before it was to be delivered for a wedding rehearsal dinner. The manager was amazing, said he could get it all ready in 30 min but their system wouldn't let them put it for delivery that close to the time. I've been going to this City BBQ on Market in fairlawn for about a year now, typically its the best BBQ in N E Ohio, but the last 4 times have been horrible. Depending on what time you go there, depicts how good it will be. Order early and it'll be worth it, order later and forget it, not even edible scraps. Last night we ordered a 1/2lb of brisket, a pulled chicken sandwich, a pulled pork sandwich, 1 rib, Mac & cheese and Baked beans. The Brisket was a pile of burnt little pieces that someone scraped from a pan hoping it would weigh a 1/2lb, the ribs i say ribs cause we were giving 2 when we only ordered 1 were so dry and hard you would break your teeth trying to eat them,. The pulled chicken sandwich taste like someone spilled an open container of salt in it, took 1 bite and threw it out. We placed our order around 5:30 for a 7:15 pickup, hardly late in the evening. I spent over fifty dollars for potato salad as it was the only thing that was good the rest was thrown. This place is for serious BBQ lovers. I have tasted many ribs from many places. These are some of the best in Ohio. The brisket is moist and better than others in Akron. The baked beans have brisket in them making them some of the best I've tasted. Mac and cheese is below average. All other sides are pretty good or fair. The sauces are plentiful. They have something called swine wine which is a vinegar based sauce meant for pork but I use it on anything. Sweet tea and lemonade make you feel like you're down south. The brisket is an ABSOLUTE must. This place knows brisket. The burnt ends are a limited time option which were also perfectly cooked and crispy. There is way too much to try. So, after now visiting City Barbeque regularly for a few months, I'm ready for my review. The GOOD: The folks who work the register are always really nice and eager to help. If you have a question, they have an authentic answer. They seem to actually know their menu, which isn't always the case for cashiers. The food runners and expo people are just as, if not more, knowledgeable of their food. The BETTER: They have a collection of house made BBQ sauces near the drink station, with a half dozen or more choices. My absolute favorite is the Apple BBQ sauce. Sweet, spicy, amazing apple flavor. Goes well on everything. The BEST: The food. I can honestly say, outside of my favorite BBQ joint of all time in the foothills of North Carolina, City BBQ has become my number two. The meats are always incredible. Pulled pork, brisket, ribs, even the turkey. All mouthwatering. All made perfectly. Never had a dry piece of anything here. The sides are just as good. Collard greens, hush puppies, Mac n' cheese, and their fries are some of my favorites. The cornbread is huge, with a little sweetness. Even though you won't have room, take a dessert for the road. Banana pudding, amazing. Peach cobbler, even better. Haven't had a piece of the chocolate cake, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it's awesome too. Online ordering does not allow for selection of sauces, the brisket was dry, and the to go set up is not tuned to handkerchief the sauce and side cups... lots o bags... but they did leave out the plastic ware as requested. We decided on the $28 sampler Plus 2 extra sides... so many to try. .. Easily enough food for 6 people Cornbread was soft, sweet and moist. Creamy coleslaw and Texas toast were forgettable. Beans & brisket and Mac & Cheese were both thick and rich and wonderful. Pecan slaw was soupy with not enough kale, but mixed well with the creamy slaw... hard to believe but it had too much fruit and nuts and not enough slaw crunch on its own. The Regular Sauce and Sweet City sauce were super powerful. They overpowered any seasoning on the chicken or brisket. The brisket was dry, but the pulled pork and ribs were super moist. Chicken was ok... but not as good as our local birds... would love them to smoke a bird from one of the farms within 10 miles that have lived happy grazing level snd have tasty meat. We will return... maybe someday they will be slow enough we can eat in house... but all in all the take out is a better alternative than the wait. read more

I have been going to this location since it opened years ago. I've tried nearly everything on their menu, and I have to say that there is an issue with consistency for some meats. This is especially true of their ribs and pulled pork. They will either be amazing or super mediocre. I've only ever had one bad experience with their brisket and that was many years ago. 99.9% of the time, their brisket is super tender and has a nice flavorful bark on it. The smoke level and fattiness of the brisket is on point as well. Their chicken and sausage are just okay. As far as their sides go, I'd say their potato salad (seriously great), green beans, corn bread, and corn bread pudding are the best. Lastly, they might have the best banana pudding ever. I've been a fan of City Barbeque for years and would make sure to stop anytime I was in Columbus. Finally they've moved a bit north. You can taste the smoke and subtle spices in each bite. There is no need to cover everything with sauce. However if you like sauce they have several options there to, each one really good and unique. The sides are all good. I especially like the baked beans, you can taste the molasses in every bit and the greens, which are hard to come by here in the north! There is another chain which specializes in BBQ in the area, City is hands down better than that other place. It is not even close. As someone who eats barbecue fairly often, I was excited to hear that a City Barbeque would be opening in my area. I had never eaten at a City Barbeque prior to this, but I had heard stories of their legendary fare, so I had to check it out. After having eaten from this place twice now, once for free before they opened, and once more recently, I'd say they mostly live up to the expectations I had... mostly. The first time we went for our free meal, they gave us each a bag with a pulled pork sandwich, Mac and cheese and a coupon for free sides next time. I thought the pulled pork was a little dry, but I may have not used enough sauce since I was eating as we went down the road. The Mac and cheese was pretty good. The pasta was cooked well, and it had just the right amount of creamy cheesiness I like in Mac and cheese. I liked the barbecue sauce they gave me quite a bit ( the original sauce, I assume) but not as much as the spicy sauce I tried on our next visit. The next time we visited, I decided to get the pick two with sausage and pulled chicken. I also got a side of baked beans and hush puppies. When I first got my plate, I was a little Leery of the pulled chicken... it looked kind of like a mystery meat that would come out of a cafeteria at a small school. Despite the suspicious look, the taste was nothing short of great. When I ordered it, I was expecting what you get at any other barbecue restaurant which would be just some plane pulled chicken with maybe a little sauce. This seems like more of a casserole too me, but it's definitely the best pulled chicken casserole you'll ever eat! The sausage was about average based on other restaurants I've tried. I don't think they offered a spicy variation of the sausage, but I think a spicy sausage would really add to the overall flavor. I feel as if the current sausage is too heavily reliant on the sauce. I'd say the highlight of my meal was definitely the baked beans with brisket. It's not easy to find barbecue restaurants around here that make that kind of baked beans, and I wish more would. They were packed with flavor, and cooked perfectly with an amazing texture. The hush puppies were good, but about the same as you'll find at any other place like old Carolina. I hope as they go on, they get a little more organized in the dining room. Many of the sauces were messy and empty. Other than that though, everything appeared generally clean. I love this place. Knew of them from when I lived in Columbus and was so happy to see them come up north. This location is great. It's a little far from my house, but it's well worth it. I placed a party pack order as well as several add on items for a small gathering, totaling nearly $100. I placed the order at 6pm and scheduled my pick up time for 730pm. When I arrive to pick up my order at 730pm, I was told it would be ready in 5 or 10 minutes. 30 minutes later my name was shouted out. I acknowledged thinking my order was ready. An employee then walked over to me and told me they were out of pulled pork and that I would need to substitute it for another meat. No problem, I said what are my options. She then proceeded to tell me they were out of chicken, turkey, sausage, and pork. My only option was to get another brisket. Unfortunately, half the people at my gathering do not eat beef. I was then told they were out of the several add on items that I ordered as well. The employee then suggested I just cancel my order and get an refund. The funny thing is, about 15 minutes into my 30 minute wait I heard one of the employees say they had just run out of pulled pork. I thought to myself good thing I placed my order an hour and 45 minutes ago. Little did I know that they didn't even start pulling my order. I drove 40 minutes round trip, waited 30 minutes just to be told they didn't have the items that I ordered nearly 2 hours before. The other funny thing was is that no one cared. No one said sorry. The employee who issued my refunded acted like I was the biggest bother in the world. It was probably the worst experience I have had with a restaurant. I emailed their customer service to inform them of what happened and no response, big surprise. Best BBQ in the Akron area! Quick, clean service. The staff is very friendly- I saw a few of the workers go over the check on the guests while they were eating. It's always nice to see the staff care about their customers, even when it's busy! They have a wide selection of meat, and southern-style sides. The portion sizes are plenty, but they have bigger options such as samplers. They make their own BBQ sauces. I would suggest the sweeter one, but it doesn't taste like your average honey BBQ. For an unbiased review, I decided not to read the reviews. Upon walking in I smelled the wonderful smell of bbq cooking. The place smells wonderful like a cozy campfire. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, side of Mac and cheese side of slaw and a sweet tea. They have a sauce bar with a number of sauces, I choose what I believe to be a mustard sauce and applied liberally on my sandwich I then topped my sandwich with some of the slaw. The sandwich was very tasteful. I could see the smoke ring on the meat so you know it's smoked. The Mac and cheese was very tasty as was the slaw. The slaw is a vinegar slaw and is very unique and taste so fresh. Sweet tea was delightful. My only suggestion is a slightly bigger sandwich total cost for entire meal was 13 and some change. read more

I went to try City Barbeque after being mailed coupons and was appalled by how rude the cashier was. When asked about what the fries were like, the cashier very rudely said something along the lines of "I don't know how you describe fries. they're potatoey." We clearly had not been there before and there was no line but the cashier seemed offended that we weren't sure what we wanted. After we ordered, we pulled out the promotional coupons and the cashier said that she couldn't apply the coupons to our order because she had already processed it. So in essence, we were screwed out of a bogo deal because the cashier was too lazy to ring the order up again. Terrible customer service! I ordered the brisket sandwich and it was very mediocre. The "potatoey" fries were actually quite good. Some words that a reasonable cashier trying to represent a company could use if a customer asked how the fries are would be "thick cut, lightly fried, larger serving." I also tried 3 sauces and wasn't very pleased with any of them. However, the chicken fingers that the person I was with ordered were very good. Overall, the food was reasonably priced (without the coupon) but a little underwhelming. read more
