City BBQ is one of my favorite spots, I wish there were more locations because it's just that good. The food is consistently great, and it's clear they care about their customers. I usually go for the Brisket sandwich meal (around $15), and it's a solid deal for the quality and portion you get. They're also the first place I go on Veterans Day as they offer free meals to veterans, and it's done with genuine appreciation, not just for show. On top of that, they always honor a veterans discount year-round, which is the kind of respect and support that makes me want to keep coming back. However I come from Texas and am a BBQ snob. The burnt ends were just burned gristle so they got us on that one. One rib was amazing but the other two were not good. Right when it arrived to our table, FIRST I started to cut it with a fork. The brisket was tough. which confused me because in Texas where I am visiting from, I eat brisket all the time. And in Texas it is served up hot and easy to cut with a fork, tender and falls apart . NEXT, I tried using a knife and fork to cut it. I actually started sawing it with force and still couldn't get it to cut. SO THEN I used my fingers to rip a piece off to eat. The brisket was luke warm. Not hot. Not warm. Luke warm and rock hard. I put it in my mouth and it was very bad. Very dense. Not tender. My first thought was that if I attempt to eat this gross brisket, I might get food poisoning. My adult son thought it looked overcooked inside and pale gray. Not a normal smoked brisket color. Not a brisket that is cooked correctly. we ate the sausage which was good. But threw that nasty brisket away. The man at the register who took our order was polite until we asked what type of sausage do you have. He replied in a kind of snippy way 'pork sausage". what we were asking was, is it jalapeño cheddar, hickory sausage or hot link, these types of sausages. And duh......of course it would be pork. The restaurant was clean. So my beef is that it is great to have a clean restaurant and polite staff but horrible brisket at a restaurant that is calling itself BBQ,.... that is NOT ok. Please learn to smoke your brisket and then learn how to reheat it without it seeming like it was nuked in a microwave and then left out to get luke warm before delivering it to the customers table. Visited the Powell location this evening, and I understand now why City BBQ is slowly on its way to bankruptcy. Complete disaster. We waited almost 30 minutes for food that was incorrect and then had to wait for a refund because they gave the last orders of cobbler to the people who ordered almost 10 minutes after we did. (They were with our group so that's how I know they got the last orders.) Our order was nothing crazy or complicated; pulled pork w/beans and corn pudding, smoked sausage w/slaw, and nachos. None of that should've taken more than 10-15 minutes. Now I know you're saying, 'Well there were probably a lot of orders before you' and if that were true I wouldn't be here right now. There were 2 tables, who already had their food, and 2 people waiting for carryout orders. New to area so we went hoping for greatness. Disclaimer, we are from the south and are Sonny's bbq fans. First , waited in line and we were next to Oder. Then we heard the cook yell up to order taker that they were out of ribs. 7 pm and out of ribs? Really? What bbq joint is out of ribs? So I ordered Mac and cheese to be completely shocked that they are serving really low end JTM cheap Mac and cheese. Taste like dish water. I mean come on, at least buy a premium Mac and cheese. Been here before so I'm shocked I hadn't reviewed it. Pretty standard City. Handy to the zoo. In a big retail cluster, a bit off the road so watch your GPS or look carefully for it. Friendly service. Ribs, brisket, pork, and more. Sides are very good. Meats are pretty good. Get some pickles. K got her standard kid's meal: mac, fries, milk. And pickles. I got ribs, baked beans, corn pudding. All good. They have several sauces, and though the meat doesn't really need it I usually have a little of one or two for variety. Best BBQ ever? Nah. But pretty good, and fairly handy around Columbus (and beyond.) Great BBQ is hard to find. Sometimes I'd rather have good BBQ than no BBQ. This location is close to the Columbus Zoo and was an easy drive there to enjoy dinner. My family enjoyed sandwiches, one pork and another sausage. We added cornbread and slaw to our sides of fries. Kids meals are available. The chicken tenders meal was disappointing. One small tender and another mini tender. This may be fine for kids 5 and younger but anyone else may need another side to fill their bellies. We enjoyed plenty of room for seating our party of 7. They just can't get it right. Ordered at 515pm for 600pm pickup. Got an email as I pulled in at 550 that there was an issue with the order. So i go in and the kid behind the counter gives me the "there's nothing I can do with that" and sends me to someone else. Get it squared away and paid for but now they have to make the order. And I'm waiting behind seven or eight people that are standing around waiting for food. And it looks like some of them have been waiting a LOOOOONNNNG time. Line of people waiting for food after ordering is reaching into the dining area. You'd think I would learn (see previous reviews) but apparently I embody the definition of insanity; trying the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Kind of a help yourself type of restaurant, but all are helpful in helping with getting your favorites. A second trip will go better because of getting drinks and sauces. Consistently Inconsistent especially for a chain type place. I've been eating here for as long as they've been in business and i think today is finally the last chance i can give them. Don't get me wrong they have the ability to serve decent albeit not amazing food but it seems every few times i get food that is just sub standard. The latest experience involved this Nashville hot chicken sandwich i received that was roughly half the normal size, dried out like it was made six hours ago and utterly pathetic in appearance. On this occasion we also ordered a family pack that is supposed to include 1 pound of meat and we noticed it looked a bit meager so i put in my digital baking scale and sure enough it was only .8 pounds with the container so probably 3/4 pounds of actual meat. Worth mentioning i did call the restaurant to bring this to their attention and the person could not have cared less and offered nothing for the bad experience. read more

Nice weather no gas in the BBQ so I decided to visit City BBQ in Powell and order take out, the restaurant was busy every one must have had the same idea that I had order pulled pork and my favorite brisket with a couple of side sat down and to my horror they had run out of brisket apparently the smoker had gone down so no brisket left they offered to replace with a slab of ribs a fair swap so I really couldn't complain the food as always was excellent even without the brisket --- Just means another visit in the near future to get my brisket fix. read more

After waiting in a long slow line (unusual for them) My husband and eat here a lot it's our go to place. But tonight's carry out was sub par. I ordered a turkey naked add creamy slaw. I had already paid and they said we are out of turkey. Oh you already rang her out, well we have enough for a sandwich. They did not. It was the dry end of the turkey and a few small little slices that were mostly not meat. As you can see it's on a bun and barely any slaw. So three strikes on that sandwich. Let me start off by saying that I love the food I get from City Barbeque, Especially the brisket and the ribs. What is getting this rating the absolutely ridiculous time it takes to get your food. We placed an order online last night for curbside pickup. The online ordering site did not mention that it was taking longer than normal to get your food. The text we received only had replies for on my way, or here. There was no warning that they were 1 hour behind on filling orders. We replied to the texts we received to let them know we were on our way and that we had arrived. We waited for 20 minutes with no notification from the restaurant that they were behind. I finally went in to see what was going on and that's when they told me that they were an hour behind. The website at that time was still showing only a 15 minute wait for food. I should have just cancelled my order, but as I mentioned, I really like the food here. I came back an hour later to get my food and was told that it would be another 20 minutes for the food to be ready. At this point, I was ready to tell every person I could find that they should avoid this place at all costs. When I was finally handed my food, I was told, sorry about the wait, we got a lot of orders. If this were last year when we first were locked down for the pandemic and people had switched to online ordering, I would understand the delay. We are over a year into this and even in a pandemic, an hour and a half wait for food is really unacceptable. And especially with no notification that you are that far behind. I'm hearing from friends that this is not a unique incident and this problem happens a lot. What would I expect at this point? First off, I would have expected to have gotten a discount on my food because of the delay, and there should have been a manager there talking to the crowd of people waiting for their food. I would also expect that they would change their notification system to warn people when they are having a wait time beyond the normal 15 minutes. read more

The next day my husband made a sandwich with the leftovers and was shocked when he almost ate a staple in the food. He has contacted City barbecue twice to have them at the very least refund the sandwich. A manager sent him a text message telling him a coupon would be sent. Nothing has happened. Excellently smoked, great tasting bbq. This City BBQ has to be pumping the exhaust fan right into the parking lot. As I got out of my car I could smell all the delicious smoked meats and other great smells. It smelled so good! The whole store smelled so wonderful. They have a lunch special that runs Monday through Friday. I get the pulled pork and 2 sides for $8.08. It's a great deal. I also earned a free drink so I was all set today. They have some new drinks at this location that I have not seen at the other locations. I'm hoping they have them at all their stores as I liked the drinks. The machine said "Tractor" and had 3 different flavors to choose from: Apricot peach Strawberry raspberry Mandarin cardamom I really liked the apricot peach! The lemonade and the sweet tea are also really great. My lunch was the pulled pork with French fries and Mac n cheese. The food is always put together so quickly. By the time you pay for your meal the food is ready for pickup. Sauces There are so many different sauces to choose from. I LOVE that they finally brought back the Bourbon bbq sauce. That's my favorite! Today was just as special as it is at the Sancus rd/Polaris location. Thanks!! We grabbed lunch here after hitting the zoo mid-week, not expecting much, and honestly could not believe how good the barbecue was. We live in South Carolina, so we get all kinds of barbecue in our life and have lots of experience to judge from! We found ordering confusing at first, since we would ordinarily each get a 2-meats plus sides platter at other restaurants, so we looked to get that here, which seemed a little expensive. Instead, we spotted a sampler platter intended to be shared (for us, it was shared between two adults), that was much more affordable and also allowed us to be able to try 4 or 5 different meats. Great food and great deal. In particular I found the house smoked sausage and the brisket were delicious. This food was a really nice surprise, I'd definitely return and recommend. Just had the most successful housewarming party ever due to the folks at City Barbeque who helped make our whole meal. I ordered the B10 which feed 20+ people and man people went to town on the beef brisket tonight, it's probably because it was cooked right as I came in so it was nice and fresh for everybody. I even waited the whole day just to have this meal and it was awesome. I had flawless service from the staff here. They were awesome and when I came for my food they had it ready 30 minutes before I was even supposed to pick it up. I love service like this plus the fact they had a dude take the food to my car. Of course I was a little bit of the talkative girl tonight so I didn't go to town on all the food. Although there will be plenty of leftovers for the coming week so that I don't have to waste money going out to eat for lunch or dinner. I have both covered!! When the craving for bbq and/or ribs hits, City BBQ is the place to go. The 2 meat dinner with ribs and brisket are my go to, both meats can be "naked" so you can pick the sauce of your choice. Brushfire combines spicy and Smokey and the original is a safe bet. You could also just visit for the sides. Tops in my list is the corn pudding and greens. The staff is attentive and friendly. On this visit they happened to be out of peach cobbler and the manager surprised us with a serving fresh out of the oven to our table! read more

The first Phone Rep I spoke with (Rhachelle) took my order on 12/21 but for some reason the email address I provided was not accepted by their system. Which meant I never got an email confirmation for my order. So on 12/23 I called again to make sure I still had an order. Gerald the last phone customer service person was very nice - but it could not compensate for the process and food. Again - he had trouble entering the email address. Now the company had my credit card information - but no one could call me? 2. I'm sorry to say the ribs were dry, the brisket was fatty and the green beans were blanched, half cooked and not seasoned. I usually love their green beans - but not this time. 3. I decided to try a pint of their chili with brisket - but I literally had 4 teaspoons of chilli (with fatty brisket). 4. The corn pudding, banana pudding was ok and the peach cobbler was good.
