Southern cooking with a fantastic bourbon selection! Decided to swing by for happy hour (which goes from 4-6 on Tuesdays - Saturday), and try out some of their bites and cocktails! It seemed like most of their cocktails were batched, so you know that the flavor and taste will always be consistent. Tried out ultimately the fried catfish and okra, the Caesar salad, and deviled eggs. The Catfish and Okra were perfectly fried with a cornmeal based batter - okra can get very gummy very quickly if overcooked, but these were perfectly fried, and the Cajun roumelade that accompanied the dish had great flavor, better than a tartar sauce would! The Caesar salad had great flavor and multiple ingredients, including some house made croutons that had a somewhat sweet flavor as if they were cornbread which was a welcoming surprise! Visited Subourbon for the first time and we had a very pleasant time, the service was excellent and wait staff was super friendly. We came during happy hour so our cocktails and appetizer were each $7. The KFC bites were pleasantly light, with a fine breading and delicious soy chili sauce - but it was not spicy at all. For the entrees we had the hot chicken sandwich with collard greens, and local mushroom pasta. We both ate every bite and were satisfied! The curry crema was really flavorful over the pasta and again not spicy at all. Definitely a unique dish that I haven't had anywhere else, and the flavors worked together nicely. My husband enjoyed the hot chicken sandwich and collard greens, but wished he had a dipping sauce for the sandwich so would order a side of ranch next time with it. So we started off with the Cornbread that comes out in a cast iron skillet. This was very hot with a scoop of butter on top. We tried several of their sandwiches. The catfish Po'boy had 4 pieces of fish which had a cornmeal dusting on it, with a remoulade, lettuce, tomato on a big hoagie roll. This was really delicious, and the bun stood up to the topping. A surprising find! My buddy and I have been trying to meet up more often and enjoy bourbon, so have been going to a bar. However, when our schedules aligned on a Monday, we needed to find a new place as the usual haunt was closed. Google had me stumble upon Subourbon and I'm glad that it did. While the location initially had me a bit wary, entering the establishment had a more upscale feel than I was expecting. It's not an opulent Michelin starred restaurant, but very nice for the bourbon forward bar that it is. Service was prompt and friendly, giving us plenty of space to catch up. The bourbon selection was quite plentiful and with some of their specials, I know we'll be coming back. Probably the most surprising was the quality of food that comes out of the kitchen. I had their shrimp and grits and appreciated the presentation and removal of the tails for eating. We also got a few appetizers that were great! My husband had been craving some Cajun/Southern food for the past week, so we gave this restaurant a try last night. Staff was very friendly and attentive, and the food was good, but not phenomenal, especially for the price point. We came around 5:30 on a Saturday and were pleased to see they had a happy hour going til 6, (rare on a weekend!) with $7.00 appetizers and drinks. We both tried a cup of their gumbo, but having had the real deal many times, theirs was disappointing. Oddly thick and tasted canned. My cocktail, on the other hand, was delicious. It was the limited time special fall punch with red wine, I think brandy?, cran-apple juice, cinnamon and cloves. For food I ordered the catfish po'boy with a side of Mac n cheese which was also very good. I like a good creamy skillet macaroni, and they did fabulous with it. My husband ordered the short ribs that came with mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables, and unfortunately didn't care for his. We had an amazing time at Subourbon last evening. The host, Stephanie was very accommodating and extremely friendly. We were seated promptly. Heather was our server and I believe one of the best customer service employee we have ever had. She was full of personality. We arrived at happy hour and they were running a Wednesday whiskey special on Monday. The four of us shared most of the happy hour appetizers and all were delicious. The drinks came out perfectly as requested. After the appetizers were enjoyed we ordered 3 entrees to be shared. The fried chicken, braised short ribs and shrimp and grits were absolutely devoured by us in a timely manner. The dinning room is rustic and provide a quiet enjoyable dinner for conversation and dinner. When we return to Columbus from San Diego, the Subourbon will be our new favorite restaurant. Oh. My. I was hesitant about this place. Crafty Pint started strong and had a terrible history of weak food and bad beer pours. Then I learned that the folk behind Alqueria Kitchen (another gem) kicked this off, and my fears were abated. The food is AMAZING. Like - I'm not a fish person. I never seek it out. But their catfish bites? Tender flaky goodness with okra and delicious dipping. Pork belly ends that were perfect. My ribeye was a little on the rare of medium rare, but was tender and delicious and perfectly rendered fat, delicious potatoes, and spot on asparagus (my least favorite green). The bartenders (yes, say at the bar) we're fast and good with suggestions for drinks - they took out the old taps and put in a solid whiskey/bourbon shelf and a smaller tap selection. The chef evidently studied some time down south/New Orleans and clearly they know what they're doing. I've never been a big (alcohol) drinker, especially straight hard liquor, so this review is based solely on the restaurant staff and, obviously, Subourbon's food. For some reason, I got an odd vibe when I asked what she recommended on the menu, but that's a personal thing, so take it with a grain of salt. I tried their Pork Belly starter and Cast Iron Cornbread starter. The chunks of pork belly were fantastic. Perfectly done, great meat-to-fat ratio. I'm not a big bbq fan, and since these were lightly glazed/drizzled, the meat flavor shown through, delish! The corn puree and broccoli matched well with the protein. The corn bread was a hard no. It was basically a conglomeration of sugar. I could not taste corn; and, while I love a natural, gritty corn texture, this was not appeasing to my tongue, nor tastebuds. I'm glad I finally made it to this small restaurant - I've passed this brick and mortar a gazillion times over the last 25 years.
