Delicious, quick service and a fun atmosphere. Went in here with my mother and daughter on a recent trip to the area. They had a good variety of options for food and sides. It was easy to read through either the menus they had available, or the board above the cashier area. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. The food was up quick and portion sizes were solid especially for the price point. Seating is open and you just pick whichever space works best for you. I really liked that they had a play area for little ones that was easy to see from most any seating area so if your child finished earlier than everyone else, or you want to sit and chat, they are happily occupied. I was a block from the hospital where my wife had surgery. I ordered a drink for myself and they gave me a drink for her free. I go to City BBQ on a regular basis and this is the typical experience. I had the two meats, ribs (very good) and sausage (excellent! Luscious.), hush puppies (better tasting than most, nice and crispy), baked beans (with brisket - yum!), creamy slaw, cornbread (good flavor and texture, not gritty like some), mac & cheese and potato salad. (Fine, the Texas toast was blah.) For dessert, the banana pudding was good, but the peach cobbler didn't impress me. We eat at the Garner restaurant all the time, but this was the first time we've eaten at their Raleigh store. Delighted to report that it's the same delicious food and wonderful customer service. My husband had his favorite sausage, collards and fried okra. I ordered the Pick 2-Meat plate (brisket and sausage, along with potato salad, corn pudding and their sinfully-good peach cobbler. Everything was luscious! The restaurant is very large and clean, and so were the bathrooms. The staff was very friendly, and very fast with our orders. We ate to the soundtrack of sizzling, smoky Delta Blues on their sound system. I can also vouch for City Barbecue's catering. They offer family-sized meals for those nights when you're too tired to cook, or when Uncle Bob, Aunt Sue and their six bottomless pits decide to drop by at dinnertime. Got a birthday? We catered our son's engagement party with the Lake Boone location and it was amazing! Everyone loved the brisket, pulled pork and chicken! The baked beans were also a big hit! Meat can be hit or miss - probably 75 percent hit to 25 percent miss - but is the best locally, and the sides, especially hush puppies, collards, and Mac and cheese, are all excellent, and service is quick and good. While waiting, I hit up their "fixings" bar for some pickles and a small pot of their house barbecue sauce. Not long later, my order was called out and I went to get it. With a beer, I demolished a full rack of ribs. Tasty, already sliced, nicely charred. Not quite fall-off-the-bone but definitely loose and easy to eat. Full of flavor. The end ones needed a little bit of sauce but the rest were delicious. The vinegar slaw was excellent and crispy. Great combination to cut the fat from the ribs. The collards with bacon were definitely tart and delicious. Yum! Great meal! I love the City Barbecue concept and I'll be looking out for them in my travels. We have eaten the brisket at City Barbeque a dozen times in the past, and it has always been a mouth watering delight. It's always tender and juicy, which is why we come back time and time again. This weekend we decided to order a large family pack with 2 lbs of brisket. We were shocked on what they allowed to be delivered to us. How on earth did the cook allow this meat out of his kitchen? It was too tough and way too salty. Yes, too salty! I'm guessing that it was undercooked, and should have never been served. If your brisket is too tough to chew, then something is wrong. When we arrived we had forgotten our masks so an employee offered to bring us disposable ones. From the start this made us feel welcome. We placed our orders quickly and before you knew it the food was on trays waiting for us to pick up. We ate at a comfortable picnic table outside. It was clean and the staff came by sporadically and asked if we needed anything. The food was delicious. I loved the ribs, they were so tender and tasty they didn't need sauce. The beans, collards and fries were all excellent. The peach cobbler was amazing. Even though their prices are a bit high, you pay for what you get. Here it is top quality delicious food. I really don't want to give you guys 2 stars but it's necessary. The three of us ate at this specific location on July 3rd. The number of people is significant because the cost for just 3 adults was $80.00! My son ordered a brisket sandwich with fries and a drink. My husband and I shared a judge's sampler with pint sides of collard greens and baked beans. We asked for green beans not collards and the manager gave us a pint of green beans. Very grateful because he didn't charge us. Our issue wasn't the quality of the meat because your bbq is always spot on. The brisket was juicy and flavorful. What wasn't riding the flavor train were the sides! The baked beans tasted very close to dirty kidney beans. It's just a preference but a little bit of brown sugar goes a long way. Maybe even a squirt of mustard. Smithfield has the best baked beans in my opinion. The green beans were watery and had no flavor. There's nothing like green beans that are slowly simmered with bacon, salt, pepper, and a little bit of butter for flavor. The saddest part of the meal besides the price was the collard greens. We took one bite and they were bitter and crunchy! Collards are a staple of the South. City BBQ, your collards are an embarrassment to all the collard loving people in NC. If you would please invite me to your kitchen to cook some collards or bring you a batch please email me ! You do have 2 delicious foods that you serve: Brisket and banana pudding. I know food is pricy these days but when you make really great bbq and crappy sides, $80.00 is hard to swallow (like your collards.) So I went back. Ordered some ribs this time. They looked great with a nice mahogony color but they tasted like creosote. I brought it up to the manager. She thought maybe they burnt them and offered me another rack. I just got a refund instead.I took one bite from two ribs and couldn't eat them them. I mean they were really really bad tasted as if they were cooked over a gas lighter. I really think management needs to go there and do a little more training. The restaurant is really nice and they have top notch equipment , there's no excuse. I saw someone cutting some brisket.It looked very good but looked like too much smoke. When you walk into the city barbecue in cary , the smell of the barbecue is epic. When I walked in here it smelled like there was a fire way too much smoke. I don't know if the equipment needs to be cleaned, adjusted or if they put too much smoke in. Tasted like what you get when you get a grease fire. Don't let this review scare you though City BBq is usually good. And if something is wrong they definitely make it right. I just don't know what happened to mine.
