I really don't want to give you guys 2 stars but it's necessary. The three of us ate at this specific location on July 3rd. The number of people is significant because the cost for just 3 adults was $80.00! My son ordered a brisket sandwich with fries and a drink. My husband and I shared a judge's sampler with pint sides of collard greens and baked beans. We asked for green beans not collards and the manager gave us a pint of green beans. Very grateful because he didn't charge us. Our issue wasn't the quality of the meat because your bbq is always spot on. The brisket was juicy and flavorful. What wasn't riding the flavor train were the sides! The baked beans tasted very close to dirty kidney beans. It's just a preference but a little bit of brown sugar goes a long way. Maybe even a squirt of mustard. Smithfield has the best baked beans in my opinion. The green beans were watery and had no flavor. There's nothing like green beans that are slowly simmered with bacon, salt, pepper, and a little bit of butter for flavor. The saddest part of the meal besides the price was the collard greens. We took one bite and they were bitter and crunchy! Collards are a staple of the South. City BBQ, your collards are an embarrassment to all the collard loving people in NC. If you would please invite me to your kitchen to cook some collards or bring you a batch please email me ! You do have 2 delicious foods that you serve: Brisket and banana pudding. I know food is pricy these days but when you make really great bbq and crappy sides, $80.00 is hard to swallow (like your collards.) I think the CEO should address why your sides skipped flavor town and found their way into a white ladies kitchen. read more

So I went back. Ordered some ribs this time. They looked great with a nice mahogony color but they tasted like creosote. I brought it up to the manager. She thought maybe they burnt them and offered me another rack. I just got a refund instead.I took one bite from two ribs and couldn't eat them them. I mean they were really really bad tasted as if they were cooked over a gas lighter. I really think management needs to go there and do a little more training. The restaurant is really nice and they have top notch equipment , there's no excuse. I saw someone cutting some brisket.It looked very good but looked like too much smoke. When you walk into the city barbecue in cary , the smell of the barbecue is epic. When I walked in here it smelled like there was a fire way too much smoke. I don't know if the equipment needs to be cleaned, adjusted or if they put too much smoke in. Tasted like what you get when you get a grease fire. Don't let this review scare you though City BBq is usually good. And if something is wrong they definitely make it right. I just don't know what happened to mine. First time diner. I highly recommend this place. The collards were PERFECT! Loved the green beans. Both were served fresh and hot which is not often the case with side dishes. The pulled pork was good with several interesting sauce choices (I liked the swine wine best). The portions are GENEROUS which is why the patrons were mostly men (single ladies take note!). Have not been here since my BBQ eating friends moved away six months back. With the current pandemic some things have changed. They still offer the lite lunch menu. You can take out, get curbside pick up our eat outdoors in their patio. Once you order they will bring you the food. I had a wonderful, hot, tender, and smokey beef brisket accompanied by core pudding and fries. Everything tasted amazing. They even served extra sauce in lidded cups. Today was our first visit here. We got sampler of meats (chicken, brisket, sausage, ribs & pulled pork), cornbread, baked beans with brisket, tea, lemonade, & chocolate cake. We got takeout. It was pretty expensive, so we expected perfection. Unfortunately, the baked beans had a burnt taste to them, so those got thrown away. The cake was ok for the most part but was kind of crispy on one side. I just pretended it was a brownie. Lol. The lemonade wasn't sweet. I had to add sugar when I got home. The meat was pretty good except for the ribs...they were really tough. The sausage was good...mild...I wish they were spicy. All in all, it wasn't worth what we paid for it. I may go back and try something else in the future. Maybe we just went on a bad day. read more

Great BBQ with great flavor and prices! I've been to this location once to place a to-go order and the other time I brought my parents here for Father's Day. This location is in a shopping center with other stores and restaurants all around. Although there is a lot of parking available, it can get hard to find a park right in front during a busy time or on the weekends. Although they were busy, especially with it being Father's Day, they worked hard to keep things efficiently moving. My father is from Lexington, NC so he definitely has strong opinions about BBQ. He's opinionated and picky about food in general, but definitely about BBQ. Since I've moved to Raleigh he's been exposed to Eastern-NC-style BBQ and prefers it over Lexington BBQ, but he still can be choosey about his BBQ even here. I was nervous to bring him here since he can be such a tough critic, but he was impressed. He loved it and I was happy to find a place he actually liked! My dad and I shared the City Sampler (Beef brisket, pulled pork, sausage, turkey, 2 sides, and Texas toast). I am a huge fried okra fan and it was a side option that day so we ordered that and they had a multi-cheese mac & cheese available. Both were delicious. All of the meet was flavorful and moist! Went here six months ago and loved it and now it is a regular for our family. I have three kids and did $6, two of them get a sandwich, small side and a drink. Food quality is always good. My daughter isn't even normally a bbq fan but loves the chicken sandwich. I wrote a previous positive review and will double down on that. For families - there isn't much a better deal. My grandson and I had a late lunch at City Barbecue today. We each ordered a pulled pork and brisket plate. The problem I have with their meat is that it has very little flavor. You have to put one of their many sauces on the meat in order to taste it. I have eaten a lot of NC barbecue at many of the top barbecue restaurants in the state in my 70 years, and all of those top restaurants are much better than City Barbecue. The meat should have a wood flavor on its own without any sauce, and there should be some spices on the pulled pork. As for the sides, hush puppies should be given to everyone and not constitute one of their sides, especially at the price that they charge. I also got the collard greens, and they were quite chewy and had almost no meat in them for flavoring. I didn't even finish the collards, which is very unusual for me. The total bill for lunch for both of us with sweet tea and no desert was over $41 which is a little high for what we got. You can do better than City Barbecue. read more

With smiths closed on Sunday and kind of small, we opted to bring visiting family here for bbq. Overall seating was large and a good fit with a toddler so as to not impinge on anyone else's enjoyment. The sampler platter was an easy way to try a bunch of items. Everything was good - for me a 4 star bbq. Most sides were good, not great, but good+, only thing is cornbread is a bit dry and really would be nice to have some butter or brown sugar butter type spread. Overall is a small chain that serves decent food at reasonable prices in a typical no frills bbq joint. We all enjoyed everything we ordered with the chicken a nice smokiness, tender and juicy. The ribs were also very good and chopped pork was tender and moist. I'm not a brisket fan but the others said it was good. Sides are typical, fries are nothing special. It's good enough to repeat visits and we found it better than the highly acclaimed place we read about in Raleigh that I won't name here but was nothing special. Lots more places to check out but for a larger party, this place has the seating and space with better than average food. Also a large variety and more choices than many smaller places. Forgot to mention they have smoked turkey too. Turkey is difficult since it has so little fat to keep it moist , but it was tender and tasty. I order a Thanksgiving meal for Thanksgiving because I had to work. When I finally got home to eat my food let's say I didn't eat it. My family didn't enjoyed it neither. The Mac & Cheese was sour the noodles over cooked, the collards didn't have a good flavor. The potato salad was good the turkey smoked but need some flavor also. I sent too much money on the meal for me and my family to have to fix the flavors. I was very disappointed but this is a lesson learn . I've added another BBQ place to my list... it's City Barbeque! I have never been a big brisket person, but I'm a new convert. I first had their bbq at a catered event. Liked it so much that I talked my boyfriend into taking me to the newly opened location on Falls of Neuse, next to the Sprouts Grocery store. This was a casual place with an Order and Pick Up line, then seat yourself. But I couldn't get over how moist and flavorful the brisket was. Then I had it again at the Yelp Blossom Bash... again, the food quality was consistent and the green beans was the perfect compliment with it's smokey bacon flavor. I'm glad to see that the Raleigh area is expanding its flavor palate. read more

Just had the pleasure of trying out City BBQ on Falls of Neuse in North Raleigh and I am truly glad we did. I had a brisket sandwich with 2 sides, collards and fried okra. It is some of the best fried okra I have ever had, the batter was light and crisp and did not overpower the taste of the okra. The sandwich was tender and falling apart. There were no pulls or stringiness which can happen with brisket. My wife had a Pulled Pork sandwich with green beans with bacon and corn pudding as her 2 sides. Both were delicious and all the sides were finished. We also had a small order of ribs and the meat fell right off the bone. When you were finished there was nothing left on the bone and if you like ribs oh know that is the way it should be. The place is brand new so of course it is clean, but the staff was all very friendly and we will be going back to the new place in our neighborhood. Thanks to City BBQ and Yelp for a chance to attend a practice meal before the opening! We enjoyed their hospitality very much and have lots of leftovers! The employees did an excellent job explaining our options, taking our order, and moving the food out quickly. They were also very attentive to us once we seated ourselves. The temperature inside could have been warmer as we were freezing by the end of our meal. Having been to other nearby locations, the brisket in the City Sampler here was somewhat disappointing as it was surprisingly dry and crumbly. The pulled pork was a little dry as well. The sausage has a kick and could have been cooked a little less. The turkey was the star, moist and very flavorful. The baked beans and vinegar slaw were excellent. All that being said, I know all the kinks will be worked out in no time and they'll be as wonderful as all their other locations in the Triangle!! read more

Food is mediocre at best. Fries are not edible. Bathrooms are gender neutral meaning that there's no clean bathroom. Both were filthy. My daughter could not use the bathroom. Also I'm not in favour of smelling used feminine products when going to bathroom. Ladies also don't want to wipe urine after someone. Will not be going in again. read more

I had a truly horrific day at work today. One of the things that put me in a better mood is illegal (don't judge) the other is bbq. The thought of a good pulled pork (not chopped pork...I don't understand the concept of making confetti out of a perfectly good pork butt) with some beans and hushpuppies. It puts me in my happy place. I read all of the reviews and decided on City Bbq. I am well aware that it is a chain..but the mom & pop bbq places hailed to the Confetti Pork belief..see above. They had what I was needing so to Grubhub I went & ordered. The speed at which they prepped my order was impressive. From ordering to delivery is was about 40 min. The bag had everything packaged nicely. So why only 3 stars you ask? The pork was nice if somewhat pedestrian. Nothing really to write home about in regards to the flavor. There really wasnt much other than the flavor of pork to be honest. I couldnt tell if it was juicy or just greasy. The original sauce from City is more a Kansas City sauce...filled with molasses and sugar...no kick. Ima Carolina grl...I like a vinegar based sauce that will bite you back. The beans were ok. They were supposed to be brisket beans but without any brisket. The bean sauce was like their bbq sauce...lots of brown sugar with no mustard. Shame that...I could teach them how to make beans. Moving on to the biggest disappointment...the hush puppies. Oh mercy, what they did to cornmeal ought to be illegal. How do you have flavorless hush puppies??? How??? To make it even worse, they BURNED THEM!!! They actually delivered 6 tasteless, fried till there was hardly anything left puppies. Criminal, just criminal. Pulled pork with baked beans. The beans are awesome. They have chunks of brisket in them. The brushfire is perfect. The ribs were good but I got a gristly batch so I'm gonna stick with the pork. I like it because it's not mushy like other places. The fresh brewed tea is good too. They have other sauces but they were all too sweet or not spicy enough for me.
