I am always on the hunt for good BBQ because to be honest, it's hard to find one that is special. What makes a good BBQ, good BBQ? Is it the sauce or the meat itself? Is it maybe the sides? How hard is it to find a place where all 3 are amazing? Sometimes harder than you might think so I normally try BBQ places often to see if I can find that magical combination of a perfect BBQ. Because it's hard to screw up the actual pork portion of BBQ (pulled pork, ribs and brisket), unless the meat is just tough, the sides are always key to an awesome bbq dining experience. Is the meat OK and could use some more flavor? Throw whatever delicious BBQ sauce of your choice you have available and there, you can enjoy the meat portion... but give me a bad side? There is no recovering from that. First impressions are great at CITY BARBEQUE, when you walk in and realize how spacious their dining area is you get excited about ordering a meal. I ordered their PICK TWO MEATS so I went with the PULLED PORK and BRISKET and if you pick 2 sides you can save a dollar so I picked the MC&CHEESE and BAKED BEANS. I love corn casserole so I ended up getting a 3rd side as well... their CORN PUDDING... It's for science purposes!! They have a large counter where you can grab some condiments as well as a variety of different sauces, I had their regular which was nice and sweet. They also have a large self serve fountain unit that I wish was COCA-COLA, because we are in COKE COUNTRY... but I had to grab some lemonade since CITY BARBEQUE decided to go with Pep... I can't even say it so let's just stick with "The Competitor". The painted over photos you see above of the fountain is the way it came out, I swear. The brisket and pulled pork were both flavorful and moist although I wish I had a bit more brisket and for the price ($15) plus the additional sides ($6) and a lemonade ($2) you wish you had more of what you liked. As shown in the pictures, the corn pudding was finished. The corn pudding was very tasty with a perfect texture that complimented the pork very well. The MC&CHEESE was creamy and smooth, loved the texture but could use a bit more flavor (salt?) or more cheese flavors. The BAKED BEANS were the surprise as I did not like them at all. The flavor to them was way too strong and sweet for my liking, I have friends and family who obsess over great baked beans at BBQ joints, this would disappoint them greatly. Last but not least, their BANANA PUDDING... Don't ever tell me about a BBQ place if they don't have BANANA PUDDING because if they don't, they are not a BBQ place. It's hard to screw up BANANA PUDDING and CITY BARBEQUE didn't screw it up, so they get my thumbs up for a fairly large and cold/creamy dessert. CITY BARBEQUE'S spacious inside, fun menu and good service along with solid food makes this a good BBQ spot to try if you're hungry or with a large group of friends. Bike night, anyone? This is some real deal bbq and the sides are excellent. There is no bad meat choice here; everything is so good. Surprisingly the turkey and chicken are amazing. As to the sides, pick one, you can't go wrong. The beans with brisket are mind blowing. The corn pudding is stellar. The mac, n, cheese, crazy good. And did I mention the collards with pork? So I was told that everything would be ready 12/24 at 4:30pm . Heard a bit bout this place, mostly mediocre to bad to be honest. Decided to check it out anyway due to it being the closest thing to me that I hadn't tried yet. And I always love checking out BBQ joints. Ventured in late on a Saturday afternoon, place was mildly busy, the wait wasn't too long to get to the register to order, though the line was pretty lengthy at one point. I was actually a little surprised with the number of people inside versus the number of cars in the parking lot. I found a spot easy and the lot seemed a little empty. Struck me as odd because it seems that everyone in the Atlanta area drives separately to places, 5 people in the same house going to the same place all drive their own cars to get there. Can you tell that I'm a transplant? haha, seriously though, car pool people, there's way too many folks on the roads here any given time of the day. Moooovinngg on... I enjoyed myself here! I won't say all that I had was tasty but there were a couple of highlights. The burnt ends were good as well as the sides, we had the mac & cheese (which I highly recommend) and the coleslaw was good also. Otherwise, we shared a city sampler platter that had turkey, sausage, pork and brisket. The pork was a bit dry and there was not a hint of smoke in the turkey, you definitely needed a bit of sauce for each. The brisket though... yeah buddy. They hit the spot on that one, not sure if that's the usual for them but it was delicious and quite moist. Easy to enjoy on it's own but a little sauce doesn't hurt for those that I want a little razzle dazzle. Speaking of which, they have a fixins bar that includes several variety of sauce, I sampled a few and enjoyed the sweet one a little more than the others spicier offerings. Oh! and the sausage on the platter, I was certain before biting into it I was going to be disappointed, just from looking at it. Nope, not a bit, good hit of spice and pepper, nice and juicy on the inside, not the slightest bit overcooked. Again, good all on its own. But hey, some folks like their tube steak smothered in something.. If you haven't been and are thinking about it, go for it. Very disappointed with the experience here. Dirty tables, incorrect order with missing items, and very average taste and quality of food items. It was busy but there didn't seem to be any staff wiping tables down. The sauces were messy/leaky and there didn't seem to be much difference in the flavors. Most of the food was lukewarm when we received it. The drinks station was chaos with people jumping the line because it wasn't well set up. I hate to post reviews without pictures if I can help it, but I'll definitely be going back so this won't be an issue. At the grand opening, they sent my business (Roman Fountains) a couple of vouchers to try it out on the house...yummy! I couldn't help but to go back for lunch. This time around I did online ordering (if you download the app, you get $5 off). My go-to now is the Pork Garden Salad with a side of Collard Greens and Texas Toast. Customer service is awesome, food is awesome! Nicely sized patio area to hang out. Oh, and I've already gotten a free gumbo to try through the app! My advice, stay far away from their Burnt Ends unless you like eating small portions of brisket pieces that are 30-40% fat. I've had the Burnt Ends from this location twice and it was the same situation both times. They charge a healthy $11.99 for 5-6 chunks of brisket, served smothered in sauce atop a slice of texas toast (toasted on one side only) and served with a couple of slices of pickle. Both times I have had this meal, the chunks of brisket were about 30-40% fat, which I cut away and didn't eat. After you trim away the fat, there isn't much meat left to eat. If you are hungry, get something else and not the Burnt Ends. I will say that after my first time, I posted a review via the restaurant's own app. The restaurant manager gave me a free meal to make up for the bad experience the first time. But I had the same experience the second time, which tells me to stay away from their Burnt Ends. On the good side, they sell their ribs by the bone (normally $2.25/bone except on Tuesdays when they are 40% off). I have had these and they were very meaty and tasted good enough to not need any additional BBQ sauce. I've also had their Baked Beans with chunks of Brisket and they were good. They sell hand cut fries. Like most places that sell these, you end of getting lots of "skins" and "ends". The last time I had these, they were covered in way too much salt, almost to the point of making them unable to be eaten. If you order the fries, I suggest you order them with NO salt and then at your table add salt to your own taste. BTW, their fountain soft drinks are Pepsi products. I got my takeout order from City BBQ in a sealed bag which was nice, but when i opened it they had completely omitted an entire pound of chicken for my family pack. I called the restaurant who offered no resolution other than a refund. I'm fine with a refund, but I don't eat red meat (which i did receive with another part of my order) so now I am having to scramble to cook chicken at the last minute. I always love coming here! I got one of the salads and it was very good. They have a selection of drinks ranging from bottle to fountain. They also have a variety of sauces (one of my favorite parts). The restaurant is well decorated and the service is good. While eating my meal I noticed something on the wall that talked about the money they raised. I also had that the pulled meat which tasted like a wet salty mop. Coleslaw was too bitter and was too much vinegar. I don't understand the bread. STICK.WITH THE PROTEINS AND YOU WILL BE FINE! Today, my husband and I decided that we would visit this new barbeque restaurant in John's Creek. We arrived a few minutes prior to opening on a Saturday morning and the line had already formed in the parking lot. Once we got inside it took a while to move through the line so I grabbed a table while my husband placed our orders. If possible, you will definitely want someone in your party to grab a table while you place your order. The restaurant is country casual and perfectly suited for barbecue. The main floor is very open and tends to be very noisy but the side room to the left of the front door was the perfect choice for dining. You will queue up to place your order, once you get to the counter, you may ask to sample the items before actually ordering. On this day, my husband ordered a full rack, I had the half rack and we added mac and cheese, fries, greens, hushpuppies, a sample of the vinegar cole slaw and peach cobbler added for dessert. Although I don't usually order sides, (because they always disappoint), I thought that I would give them a try this time. Here's the deal: Cole slaw: horrible, the primary ingredient was water, there was no hint of vinegar, no creaminess and no seasoning. Collard greens: too salty, too much meat, bitter, Mac and Cheese: contained everything but cheese, highly processed, slightly disgusting, Fries: delicious, hand-cut, nicely seasoned, Hushpuppies: wonderful, perfectly seasoned and perfectly prepared. I could literally eat them all day. Peach cobbler: tragic, odd non-traditional crust, an overwhelming taste of artificial almond flavoring, strange mushy texture. I don't care what they say, this is NOT peach cobbler. Ribs: Now we're talking: good rich flavor without the "choke of smoke", a decent amount of meat on the bone and not salty. Yes! I don't eat brisket because those times that I tried it, I found it to be tough and dry. However, as we were exiting the restaurant, I noticed they were sampling brisket and decided that I would give it a try. This was the best bite of brisket I have ever tasted. It was lightly seasoned, melt in the mouth tender and perfectly smoked. Yes, I dare say that the brisket actually upstaged the ribs. Simply incredible! I was so offended by what they did to the sides that I don't know if I will return. If I do, I will just purchase the proteins to pair with my own sides and totally skip the dessert. Great, delicious BBQ! and great atmosphere! We came here on a Saturday for lunch and there was a bit of a line to order, but it goes pretty fast. It is a good place to bring kids because there is a decent amount of noise so you don't have to be embarrassed if your kids can't use his/her "inside voice". I got the pulled pork sandwich and my husband got half a bbq chicken. My sandwich was VERY flavorful. Slightly on the saltier side, so you could even eat it without sauce and it would taste great. But really... who eats at a barbeque place without using bbq sauce? yum! The original bbq is great. The bourbon sauce really has a great bourbon flavor you can actually taste! I was pleasantly surprised. The spicy bbq sauce was probably my favorite though. For sides we got corn pudding, collard greens, mac and cheese, and fries. The corn pudding was kind of a sweet treat actually, very good. It is kind of like the one I make for Thanksgiving every year haha. The collard greens had a vinegary flavor which was tasty. Usually greens are cooked so long they are nearly mushy. I liked this one because it had good texture. The mac and cheese was with spiral pasta. My kid unfortunately didn't eat that much of it but I liked it. And you could really taste the potato skin on the fries. I didn't get to try the chicken because my husband gobbled it up, which I take as a sign that it was good. My son liked it too and he is a picky toddler so a win for us all! You would think living in Georgia that there would be a great Bar-B-Q place on every corner. There isn't. However, City is excellent BBQ, reasonably priced and the service is outstanding. I am very picky, and have eaten at most BBQ places with 20 miles of John's Creek. This place is excellent. The don't serve whiskey though, which is a disappointment. My dad and I were enjoying our lunch and he stopped by the table to check on us. We said everything is delicious and talked about the desserts. I'm a connoisseur of banana pudding! The manager was very nice helping me order my food. He ended up giving me the banana pudding for free. Very nice touch! Now...onto the food: Pulled pork - very good, juicy, comes in big chunks (not very "pulled/shredded"). Ribs - St. Louis style ribs. They were tasty, but very dry. Dark bark, good but in my opinion a little dry. If you are looking for baby back fall off the bone moist tender ribs,these are not those type ribs. Brisket - we passed on brisket, had extra pulled pork. Chicken - fabulous!!! So juicy and yummy!!! Definitely getting this one again! Coleslaw - we had the creamy style. My family noted that it was one of the best coleslaws they ever had. Portion is very small though for a family. Mac and cheese - also very good. Nice and creamy. I had the opportunity to visit during the soft opening. My husband and I LOVED the barbeque. The flavor was great and it was very tender. We also enjoyed that there are a lot of sauce choices and several very tasty ones at that. However, we both agreed the sides left a lot to be desired. We got the collard greens and mac and cheese. The collards didn't have a lot of flavor and the mac and cheese flavor wasn't that great. I was torn between 3 and 4 stars on this one because of how good the meat was, but how disappointing the sides were. I am willing to go back and try it again for sure. We have a usual BBQ spot that we adore but husband and I really wanted to try the sandwich "More Cowbell" as it looked absolutely delicious. Boy did we make a huge mistake. The sandwich was small, missing most of the ingredients (we really missed you peppers and horseradish sauce) and the turkey tasted...off. We tried the fries which were incredibly soggy and the vinegar slaw was more like slaw mixed with water that may have been in the same room with vinegar sometime within the past month. My sons had the ribs, mac and cheese, and hush puppies and their exact words were "Meh." Have you ever known teenage boys to not finish food? Yeah, it was that bad.
