I come here for the french toast and I'm so glad they finally have real butter, good move! The food could come a little faster but hey, the service is good and friendly and as diner food goes, it's pretty damn good here. I love diners because they're no frills, unpretentious and it's a place to sit and chat. It could be a little warmer in there but I'm so glad it's so close to my house. I think I will be spending a lot of time here when I"m studying for the bar this summer. __ I had to edit my review. I went there not too long ago expecting to have lunch. It was about 3 in the afternoon and the place was closed when the sign clearly states it's open until 6. I was pissed, my stomach was all set for whatever it was that I was craving that day. Place is clean and inviting, service is quick and friendly but the food was quite ordinary. I think I should have ordered french toast as Michelle S. suggested. Instead I went for ham and eggs which was fine not great. No butter for my toast, instead they used margarine. The coffee was the standard diner pot that sits on a warmer. The little things indicate to me this is a decent neighborhood place, and not somewhere I'd drive to just for the food. read more

Was able to get a seat right away and there is parking in the back. Waitress was nice and bilingual. Food was good and the apple juice is overpriced!! It's a neighborhood dinner which is clean. I got the steak skillet and my boyfriend got some sort of classic breakfast combo, and we were both happy. Eggs were just right, coffee was good, and the cream was fresh (I always check). I've driven by this place a zillion times, and I finally stopped to grab a bite. What a treat! Ok, first of all, there is FREE parking in the back, which is huge. Ellie, our server, was as friendly as they come. She was very attentive to our needs and made us feel welcome. Now for the food... I had the 3 egg breakfast with sausage, hash browns and a biscuit. A-mazing! I had a bite of the French Toast and breakfast ham...Yes! They were on point! The place is relatively small, but we came around 1pm on a Saturday, and we did not have to wait for a table. I'm not a Foodie, but I can appreciate a good meal at an affordable price. This will be my new breakfast spot to bring my friends and Fam when they visit. Great job City Cafe! read more

Came here with my husband and young son since it looked like a nice neighborhood place to get brunch. The restaurant itself looked nice enough for what it is, a casual diner with familiar food options and a few hispanic options sprinkled throughout the menu. The hostess and our waiter were friendly and attentive while we were seated and ordering our drinks. When we ordered our food, my husband asked the waiter about the coupon that he purchased online and the waiter told us that those coupons were not valid according to the owner or manager. He said that he had other customers come in with the coupons before and that the management would not accept them. We insisted that he ask whoever the manager was again if they would accept the coupon since had already purchased not just one, but two coupons and expected them to be honored. After all, how can you continue promoting your business through a coupon website (this costs the owners money to do!) and then claim the coupons people actually buy are invalid? My theory is that the owners or managers decided that the loss from the customers using coupons plus paying the third party site to sell the coupons is too much and just decided to refuse any coupons and wait until their contract period with the coupon website is over. This would be extremely poor management and I would hope there is another explanation but we did not get one. The waiter returned and told us that they would not accept the coupon. I asked them how that is possible and why the coupons are still being sold if the restaurant is going to claim they are invalid. The waiter didn't seem to know anything and was just repeating they are invalid and he doesn't know etc. Not his fault, he was just repeating the poor explanation of the people in charge. He then told us that we would have to contact the site we bought the coupons from to get our money back. Well of course, because the owners at the restaurant have already shown they aren't going to look after their customers or even have the decency to come out from hiding in the back and apologize for wasting time and money with no real explanation. Am I wrong? It's not stuck-up or whiny to get pissed when people don't honor their promises people! This is why customer service is important. Needless to say, we got up and left just as one of our food items was coming out, which made me cry a little inside since it did look delicious and came out rather quick. We were hoping it could be a regular place to go, but the extreme apathy from the management/ownership towards customers is unforgivable in my book as someone who has experience managing and been responsible for customer complaints. Letting your customers walk out unhappy for a reason that is fully your responsibility is not acceptable to me and I have no problem with never returning unless responsibility is taken for us and the other customers who have purchased coupons and had them not honored. read more

I've been living in the neighborhood for years and have always wanted to go to this diner for breakfast. I finally made it out and I regret not going sooner. The waitresses were really nice and pleasant. It seemed that the people that were there go regularly and have their own little bond with the waitress which I thought was nice. The City Cafe is a great local diner with excellent prices and very good food. Despite some of the less than stellar reviews, I have eaten there four times now and each time the service has been good, the food well prepared and tasty (and tons of it), the place has been clean and during this last visit, the owner REMEMBERED MY ORDER FROM MY PREVIOUS VISIT which was about a month prior! Everyone here is very friendly and the patrons are everyone from priests to punk rockers so it is fun for people watching too! If good ol' hearty diner food (at about half the price of Golden Nugget) is your thing, give these folks a shot! read more

After a long absence, I decided to give this place another try since I had errands to do around the area and I wanted to start my day with a good breakfast. I was thoroughly disappointed in my order. My order was a short stack of pancakes and i opted for a side order of bacon on the medium side. I stressed that because I don't like it crispy, and of course coffee with the meal. I got the bacon as ordered, but unfortunately was cold. It even wasn't warm. And the pancakes were mushy. Needless to say, I didn't finish my breakfast and then to pay almost $5.00 more than what I would have paid at another breakfast joint is beyond me.
