Great location for fish if you're looking for a Petco Petsmart alternative. Also have other critters. I bought my lilac-crowned amazon parrot from here many years ago. Evidently you can do trade-ins here like trading your car (gave them a pair of lovebirds with 3 eggs + cash for my upgrade). Pets here are probably not in the best of conditions, but what pet store is? PETA would have a field day with this place. read more

This place have a plenty of fish and small animals. I bought a guinea pig here. He was very cute and nice. I notice that they don't have good care for the small animals. I'm also disappointed that they do not take return or refund. read more

I can not give this company another $18 dollars for fish that die less than 24 hours. Others in group bought at the same time are perfect. No it is not the tank. And I applaud them for sticking to policy. However that policy will keep me from doing business with this regime again. At first was happy walking into this store cause I'm a huge animal geek. Me and my cousin walked in and was instantly gazed upon with nasty looks by the "mother" of the store and I'm assuming her kid. I'm guessing this is a family type business. But anyways we walked towards the fish Aisle and the kid of the store followed us and started acting like he was cleaning tanks. Mind you if you going to clean tanks clean the ones that are actually dirty and have dead fish floating around in them. So I didn't let it bother me and continued to look around and everywhere I turned around that kid was right behind us like we were planning on stealing or something. Then here comes Shreks wife with a limp Fiona pretending to sweep everywhere we walked with that busted ass broom like girl it's almost 2021 let the old witch broom go.. it's falling apart leaving trash as you sweep! So we got done with the fishes and started walking towards the other side of the sticky floor store and guess who we see again little boy Pinocchio following us AGAIN I was finna say something but was told to just ignore it and did. We started to look at the reptiles and bird room but I decided not to go in there not only is it locked up like Fort Knox all the animals I can see threw the glass are crowed and look like they wanna kill themselves so we didn't go in then here come Pinocchio after like 15min asking if he could help us with anything we said no we're just looking and he left. We started to walk around the corner back towards the fishes to see the corals and Fiona was getting on Pinocchio for I guess not getting us out the store or something cause all I heard was "I did I tried" from him while they were talking while walking. So lastly we walk towards the corals and not only were they looking pretty pathetic and water cloudy asf here comes ms limp walking up on us asking "CAN I HELP YOU ALL WITH ANYTHING" and it was LOUD! Like I had to take a step back and recalculate who tf this bitch talking to like that, but I guess my cousin seen my face and just said no we're good. The lord knows I try do good but WHEW that bitch almost got it. Should have tripped her short one In half working leg ass into that damn murky ass water. But I try do good . Bottom line if you black and wanna be stocked all through the store I wouldn't go here. All that was very unprofessional and uncalled for. If you have aquariums, go here and not one of the chains. I'm an extremely lightweight amateur (I have some easy-care aquatic plants... freshwater nano tanks... zero interest in saltwater or coral or anything intensely complicated) but I have fun with it and I was really happy to discover this place. It's nice to have a source that isn't a huge chain, that takes care of their fish (etc) and where I can buy some of the stuff I want without paying huge shipping costs to have live plants/fish/shrimp etc overnighted to me, which is what I mostly did in the past. There were some specific plants I was looking for that were out of stock. I'll be happy to come by another time to see what they've got. I got red cherry shrimp and was really happy with the price (I saw a review mentioning they were overpriced - I have not seen anything cheaper so I assume the price has changed) and was happy to see that they had orange and blue shrimp as well if I ever decide I want any. The shrimp are doing well and my tank did not acquire anything undesirable from the addition. I eyed the clawed frogs (they looked so healthy! If you ever feel upset about seeing the clawed frogs at big box pet stores - basically half of them die en route to the store, and the rest are in bad shape - come here instead) and the 'blue lobster' which I would have called a crawfish but I only have two tanks, which are already stocked with things that wouldn't mix well with them so I couldn't purchase. If I ever get a third tank I'll probably get some frogs, and I will definitely get them here. read more

Easily the best pet store in Houston. Good prices on science diet can food for my dog. I come here because I have a big salt water aquarium and they literally have everything for it. Their fish are little pricey, but they are always very healthy. My daughter loves to come here and see all the fish and birds. Some, not all (you have to find the right ones) of the staff are very knowledgeable about maintaining aquariums, too. read more

Horrible conditions! I saw wounds on fish and an aquarium with about 50-75 albino frogs crammed. together and they had beautiful macaws trapped in little cages with nothing! There small animal section was cruel they crammed the mice together and i felt so bad for the little hamsters as they were climbing on top of eachother. This place screams animal mill. Horrible place to buy pets and the staff didn't help me at all. read more

Helpful staff, easy to find location. Way more selection than I anticipated. Tons of saltwater fish to choose from and tons of coral and anemones as well. All tanks looked well kept and everything seemed fairly priced. Only needed an emerald crab today but will be back for sure when it's time for some more coral. read more

I had a horrible experience with this store. The customer service was horrible. Working in retail myself, I understand that dealing with the public can be daunting and stressful. That being said, I was so disappointed with the woman who "helped" me. I had purchased 5 T5 grow bulbs for my planted aquarium about 2 weeks prior. Two of them burnt out within a couple of days. I'm a student and work also, so my free time is extremely limited, therefore I was unable to exchange them right away. I brought them in 2 weeks later and they did not have the proper bulbs to replace them. So, I settled for 2 regular 'daylight' bulbs that were about half the cost of my originals. I asked if I could get an aquatic plant that cost the difference to make it even. She absolutely refused and was very rude. I have spent a very large amount of money at this store because I believe in supporting local businesses. I have never been treated with such disregard like that. I felt like I was nothing but an annoyance and not a valued customer. It's a shame, because the store has wonderful stock. Needless to say, the experience was so upsetting that I will no longer be spending my money there. I do understand that people have bad days and nobody is perfect, but this was beyond rude, it was disrespectful. read more

I'm writing this review of City Pets from the vantage point of an aquarium enthusiast, a marine biologist by profession, and a wife to a meticulous and caring husband who takes care of our pets like none other. We have been re-populating our 55 gallon saltwater tank, a hobby we have enjoyed for over 10years, and after our move to Houston and at first found City Pets to be a wonderland in the selection of saltwater flora and fauna. . . HOWEVER, after loyal patronage for 5 months, we have had EVERY SINGLE FISH and crustacean PURCHASED FROM THEM DIE! We are basically traumatized by this because we love this as a hobby and we take great care of this aquarium. I realize there are many variables here, but we are able to sustain the fish we brought with us from home, and several hard and soft corals, which are not only sustained, but thriving (which could never live in a tank with poor water quality); we have ruled out water quality and aggression as suspects for these deaths. We have NEVER had a problem like this at our old pet store in Illinois, where everything was happy as a clam (pun intended) in our tank. After the first Powder Brown Tang and horseshoe crab died, we were hesitant to try again and started noticing the sickly look about many of the fish, but tried a heartier fish, a Domino Damsel. This damsel lasted a little longer but soon took a trip to Davey Jones' Locker. This last purchase of a Yellow Tang resulted after looking over every Yellow Tang in the store and found that most were diseased, emaciated, or behaving as if they were in poor health. As an all-things-ocean-lover (and not a tree-hugger, mind you), I am very concerned about the way this store treats their animals. We can only really speak to the saltwater fish, so the bottom line is. . . . WE HAVE HAD 4 FISH IN 4 MONTHS DIE shortly after they were purchased and introduced into our pristine and well diversified saltwater tank. I have to pull my support of this store and encourage others to look elsewhere, where perhaps the fish and aquaria are maintained with more care and concern for their occupants' welfare!! read more

I have had the most amazing experience with City Pets...I am pleasantly shocked at the wonderful customer service and friendliness of the brothers, Donnie & David and staff! I am new to the hobby of saltwater fish/aquariums I met the brothers at City Pets after I had already gotten a few quotes from other fish stores. Donnie took the time (&it was really busy in there) to explain everything, listen to my needs, & suggest the perfect tank for me...& his quote was well below the other fish store quotes I got....plus I ended up getting a custom tank with upgrades! While waiting for my tank to come in (2 wks) I visited the store 2more times in prep for the big day! David was equally there to help with all questions...he even sought me out several times in the store and asked me to ask him questions! So, my tank came in & David called and set up a time to deliver and install....laid back, convenient & reassuring! The installation went smoothly - better then I could have expected...I'm a little OCD and I just had new floors laid down...David and Kong were so respectful , even took their shoes off (without me asking) no mess, just 1 perfect tank at 1 perfect price with upgrades to boot! I can not believe that anyone would recommend this place. I dont know where to start. A leopard gecko in the back room was long dead and looked as if it had starved to death. the desert lizards didnt even have uva lights. Not to mention they were missing limbs. They were keeping new arrival baby parrots in critter ceepers so small the poor birds could not even stand up. There were many tanks of fish that were extremely over crowded and containes several starving fish. They do have a lot of products for caring for ankmals but they dont seem to care at all about keeping theirs alive. poor animals. read more

I went to buy seven 5 gallon jugs of salt water from City Pets and I couldn't believe no one could help me. They just watched me carry each jug and fill up myself and then carry each one back to my car. I'm 5 1" petite girl weighting 105lbs and I saw few muscular men work there and none of them offered any help. I'm not coming here ever again and regret spending $3,800.00 in the past with them.
