This place is super cute, inexpensive and quite good. I hope they have rectified some of the things the last reviewer mentioned. My bread looked quite fresh and was even warm. I had the trout with shrimp and mushrooms and it was fantastic! I'd take a pass on the snap peas (I don't like sweet stuff on my veggies). They served my iced tea with an orange wedge (different, but cool). And, we were in and out pretty quick over lunch. The waitress even gave my co-worker a to-go cup for the rest of her iced tea. I'll admit, I was dining with a couple of regulars, so maybe we got extra special service. But, I would definitely stop in here again. Maybe next time for a cocktail after work. read more

Originally a 3 star review, I'm dipping it down to 2 stars because of the post experience. The fare is your typical "tavern" food. Burgers, sandwiches, and steaks. Nothing special. I got a Monte Cristo sandwich, my friend got the prime rib, and we split an appetizer of fried calamari. He also got a salad. You also get house bread prior to the order. It's not very good. The bread tasted borderline stale and was cold. The calamari was overcooked, the breading falling off, but overall not bad, especially with the dipping sauce that it came in. Quite frankly, that was the best part of the lunch. While my friend enjoyed his prime rib, my Monte Cristo was mediocre at best. It kinda was like French Toast meets Grilled Cheese and throw in two meats, but unfortunately it came back in the form of heartburn. The french fries that came with it (also with a pickle spear) were uninspiring and lacked and originality (they tasted like the fries you'd get at a snack bar). I asked for broccoli as a substitute, which tasted a bit better than the fries did. Best potato skins in Old Town. Atmosphere is give or take; don't go here if you don't like hip hop or club music... as they blast it on a nightly basis. Definitely the shadiest place in OT now that O'Meara's is gone... I'd only recommend going for Trivia on Monday Night's, honestly. They are very hit or miss. Most of the times I'm very happy with the service and food, but tonight I had sat at the bar where the bartender messed up my drink order and then charged me $70 for a drink I did not have. She charged my card twice and I am unsure if she actually corrected it. I will try once more, but if I have the same problems I will never go back. Although not the fanciest, most comfortable or greatest food place, it's kind of cool to walk into one of those few 'real' nice places, the place you want to meet your friends at! You'll find the well known fare and although not the best, it's really good comfort food... you'll enjoy a decent meal with a bit of real feel staff that care about you. This should be considered Manassas' best kept secret as an edible historic landmark. My favorite consistent meal is the Monte Christo, WOW! Not many places can boast it, but it's here and its good. Ah, I really don't know where to start. The staff is super friendly and it's definitely a locals bar. My mom loves this place so I go with her often. The food is just average. It's stereotypical old fashioned comfort food. For instance: meatloaf sandwiches, fried stuff, etc. in terms of quality it's just ok. The soup is always good. It's not a fancy place, but you'll get full and you'll have tons of options to choose from. You'll feel like you're eating dinner at your friends moms house. That's the best way I can describe it. The atmosphere is blah, but the service staff and the locals that come are great and you can make friends. It is a "cheers" type bar for an older crowd (40's - 60's). read more

I had the opportunity to have lunch here recently, the first time in a few years, and I enjoyed it very much. The staff are very friendly and service is quick, food arrives at the right temperature (even in a group of 5) and all orders are correct. I ordered the top sirloin with fries and my steak was perfectly cooked (medium), the steak was well seasoned, moist and tender. The fries are batter dipped or double fried or something, which makes them especially good. My side salad was fresh, lettuce and veggies crisp and the dressings are all house made (I had the blue cheese which was excellent with a good amount of cheese in it). I thought the prices were very reasonable for the amount of food you get. My iced tea was freshly made and tasted great (it annoys me when the iced tea is old from the day before or very dark tea). At weekday lunch it was quite busy with many groups of seniors and some work people enjoying lunch. Yet the food was coming out quickly and everyone seemed to be enjoying their meals. It was a solid meal, no complaints and I would be happy to go back again. We started going to City Tavern when they were located on Main Street in Old Town, Manassas. They had, without a doubt the best steaks in town. It was rumored that the owner was a butcher, or former butcher and took pride in his cuts of meat. Fast forward--City Tavern moved out of downtown Old Town and out on Rt. 28, entering a site that was a failed restaurant. The place was then sold and the new owners put out a new menu. GONE were the good steaks, replaced by a "drunken steak" and another one, a "Bavette steak," which is as tasty as yesterday's leftover breakfast grits--and tough enough that you can't get your fork into the gravy. I could literally not chew most of it all the way through. And the baked potato, another former standard, was undercooked, probably in a microwave the whole way through. All in all, it was a terrible experience and one not likely to be repeated because they have lost two longtime customers. The only reason it gets a two is because the server, Dominique, was very efficient and attentive. I hope the owner sees this. read more

Second time here and I'm not sure what the big deal is about this place--I'm not too crazy over it. Our job usually chooses this place to eat during our holiday lunches so I end up going for a free meal. The pork chops were on the menu and one was good but the other was tough and I didn't eat it. Okay. Nothing to write home about. I got souvlaki sandwich because the gyro was fake not the real meat. Disappointing when everything else on the menu was Greek! Back in the day Bennegans had one: A Ham & Cheese Dipped in batter, deep fried powdered sugar over top and raspberry dipping sauce. They tried the cheesesteak, which they liked better than the ones at Philadelphia Tavern. Mommy enjoyed a soup and salad. The service was quick and friendly. They also have a bar there, but the dining room is far enough removed from the sound system that it wasn't too loud. They had a good time and would go back. First off, I would like to say service here was excellent. Our server/waiter Mike was very nice and personable. Even the manager/owner was very nice and friendly. My two friends and I stumple upon this restaurant tavern while searching for late night eats, that open late while on our drive to Philly from Shenandoah National Park. We found the place via yelp and after reading prior customer reviews we decided to give this place a try. Unfortunately for us, their full menu is not available after 10pm. We got there at 11pm. It closes at 2am. But there is the late night limited menu available. Originally I ordered the fried oyster sandwich and garden salad. But they ran out of fried oyster so I chose their fried cod sandwich. My friend ordered the fried calamari, fried zucchini sticks, and cajun Chicken wings. They were out of the fried calamari, so she chose the mozzarella sticks in its place. The waiter /Mike was very apologetic for the lack of two items. Even the manager came out and apologized. For drinks I had the Mr. Pibb (Dr pepper) and my friend had the angry orchard apple cider. Let me tell u the food was fresh with fresh ingredients. The food did not disappoint. My favorite was the zucchini sticks. Delicious and highly recommended. The french fries that came with my cod sandwich was delicious too. Mozzarella was fresh and lightly cursted. Mike told us, all their ingredients and food are made fresh every morning. I believe it because you can taste the difference. My cod sandwich however was so so. Food was great, service was superb. I've been to City Tavern for events before such as dinner, brunch and last week some friends and I attended this tavern after a Toastmaster event. We ordered food. There wasn't much of a crowd during this time. One friend likes to photograph himself showing the food and the location on his Facebook Page. There were three of us and while we were eating a person came to our table claiming to be the manager and asking if we took a photo of the server. We were cordial and and agreeable to the manager and the friend who takes photos of his food explained what happened. But after this incident it made me wonder if it's worth returning to this establishment. We also went there because we may be planning a holiday event. I wouldn't be inclined to hold an event here but my friends are more forgiving. read more

I would not recommend this place. We went for the Sunday brunch and barely ate. All of the "hot" food was cold, even the items that were just put out. The salt wasn't coming out of the shaker. We removed the top and it was filled with crud. We asked for the check at that point. Even the pastries were stale. Just a bad experience all around. My family has been going to City Tavern for years. All of our family events have been at City Tavern, this location and their old location. We were there for a luncheon on Saturday. The food was wonderful, I really enjoyed the chicken and the sliced beef. But the service was really bad. The server was high and wearing a dirty tight uniform. This person clearing doesn't care about her job at all. She did the bare minimum and was not friendly. When we arrived at City Tavern we sat in the car to wait on others to arrive. My girlfriend and I watched her leave the restaurant to get in her van to get high. Clearly Management has no idea what their staff is doing when guests are watching. I've come to this restaurant twice now. to be honest I won't make it a third. the first time my girlfriends and I came we sat outside and had to repeatedly go inside and ask about our drinks. the second time we had a couple of concerns regard our bill and when i spoke to the manager he was very disrespectful and seemed to clear less about any of our issues and try to push the blame on one of his staff. i believe he handled the situation very unprofessional. I'm not one to believe that the customer is always right because sometimes we are very much wrong. it's sad because the food was outstanding, but to be honest some of the management and servers could use some work. read more

This place had excellent prime rib for the price $12.99 for 8 ounces of prime rib. Also had excellent fudge cake. The bread and the potato are excellent with fast service here. My kids really like the French fries. Overall the price was very cheap for the quality of food great value. read more

This place could use a really good cleaning, scrub the floors and for the love of all that is holy, clean the glass window and tracks in the patio area, because that is just gross. The servers are okay, they aren't rude or anything but they certainly don't go out of the way to be super friendly... maybe I was just there on an off night. The menu is HUGE. There is something there for everyone. I was there in a group of 6 and we had everything from salads, BLT's and steaks at our table. The food came out fast and the drinks stayed filled. I don't come here very often since I tent to think of it more as a "bar", but I am always pretty surprised at how good the food is each time I am here. I haven't been to the brunch here in about 2 years, not even sure if they still do it, but from what I remember, it wasn't bad. I'll check that out again soon and post an update. read more

Daily Restaurant, I enjoy the food here immensely however the service would get less than 1 star. They are rude and seem to give a crap less about your experience. Even when you speak with the manager, you are far from pleased with the lack of sincerity you receive from the staff. Evening Bar/Club, this is an interesting place. They have a decent selection of drinks, however I wouldn't find myself planning a night out there anytime soon. The one night I found myself there, I understood why they had three or four bouncers for a bar that's only 30 x 30! Sunday Brunch Buffet, the sole reason I am writing this review! If you have not been there, please make the trip. Again the staff is a bit rough around the edges however the fresh omelets and waffles made right in front of you make up for it! Having grown up in a small town, I'd gotten accustomed to family, non-chain restaurants without pretenses and just good food and great prices. I hadn't found such a place in the area until visiting the City Tavern last week. The prices were fantasticly cheap, the food was normal and hearty and American and real and my service was great. I LOVE CITY TAVERN... The restaurant part.. DEFINITELY NOT THE BAR - can't stand that.. The food is CONSISTENTLY amazing... Everytime I order, I know my meal is going to taste divine.. They serve FRESH bread with the meal and its amazing... The waitstaff are great - friendly and attentive to every tables needs. The restaurant is ALWAYS clean and I have never had to send food, silverware,glasses etc back because of hair/dirt/broken dishes... so that is definitely a plus.. After driving by here many times, my wife and I decided to give this new restaurant (or location for the restaurant, I'm not sure) a shot. The good: This place has really good food at surprisingly good prices. I was honestly shocked at how cheap their food is vs. most restaurants in the area (especially the chains). Any time my wife and I can get out of a restaurant for under $30 is a good time. I'm always on the hunt for a good burger, and City Tavern certainly didn't disappoint. I'm not sure where they get their fries from or how they prepare them, but they are out of this world amazing. And the bread that comes out warm before your meal is delicious! The bad: Nobody seemed to notice when we walked in the door. Sure, it was 30 minutes after opening on a weekday, but staff members had seen us come in and chose to ignore us. Finally someone (a manager, I think) told an employee who was sitting at the bar drinking a lemonade to seat us, and she seemed annoyed by that. Once we finally got seated, I think there was some confusion as to who our server was going to be (two stopped by our table to take our drink order). At some point after that the manager loudly asked staff members in his vicinity who wanted to go home (I guess they were over-staffed?). Not a huge deal, I understand why he'd want to do this but it's not the best impression to leave for your patrons. Four out of the five for the good food and great value. With the brunch was a surprisingly decent tasting ravioli pasta dish with vodka sause, no major frills, but considering it was a pasta dish on a brunch buffet I was expecting it to be gross. I went back for seconds. I have to give them a three because the customer service was pretty bad when I went there. Namely, we didn't have a server... at all. We had to flag down the host after sitting with no service for 20 minutes. All we wanted was a glass of water, since we got the buffet, but even that was too much to ask. After being blatantly ignored the entire time we were there, and being forced to ask the hostess for stuff as basic as utentsils we ended up leaving in a sour mood. full yes, satisfied, no. ***This is for drinks only*** Came to City Tavern for drinks over the weekend as part of a friend's birthday celebration. It's located within a local Inn, but has a separate entrance. We were greeted immediately and taken to our group. Our server was awesome! She was friendly and handled our big group well. We didn't make it easy either with our multiple drink orders. Also, props to City Tavern for having Samuel Adams on draft! Whoop whoop! We didn't eat here but the menu looks pretty decent. I've been to the restaurant twice now, once before with co-workers, then again with my wife so it was decent enough that i came back and had no problems each time. Comfortable home made food. Big bar area. Kitschy decorations (old life magazine covers all over). Some friendly service. Our server switched part way through the meal. The wasn't terribly welcoming or friendly but our next server was pretty great. I had chicken parm. It was good, not great. The pasta was overcooked to mush, but the chicken was great. I have never had bad food here! It's amazing. The Greek owners really know what they're doing & I love that they have daily specials. It's fresh & so yummy! Plus their bread is to die for! It's also very well priced. Totally affordable!!! & their patio.. Sometimes I choose to go there just for the patio. Minus a star BC of the crowd it pulls in late nights. Some of those people need to be kicked out. But I guess that's not really their fault. I'm also excited they're moving to KC's. I think that will do so much good for the business. read more

More like a 4.5. My wife, grandson, and I had dinner here last Sunday. With NFL games the bar was loud and busy but properly socially distanced. We chose the quieter dinner side that also had quite a few tables in use. I was impressed with their local beer selection on tap. We started with an appetizer sampler and the zucchini sticks are outstanding. The buffalo wings, potato skins, and mozzarella sticks were very good but standard, except that the mozzarella sticks were very large. The zucchini sticks are obviously homemade, hand cut and hand dipped in batter. The zucchini is cooked well but not limp. My grandson had chicken tenders that instead of the usual frozen that you can buy from Walmart were actually hand sliced chicken breast pieces and lightly floured and fried. They were pretty similar to Chick-fil-a tenders. My wife had a piece of prime rib that was very tender and well cooked. It was missing seasoning though. Usually prime rib is rubbed with a a spice mix on the outside but this was missing on this one. It was still a good piece of steak. I had a club sandwich and french onion soup and both were outstanding. The french onion soup was not salty at all but was full of flavor. The club sandwich included a thin piece of fried chicken as one of the meats and it really put it over top compared to other cold cut clubs. Service was ok. A little far in between visits but they were busy and a little understaffed so excusable. We will definitely return! read more

Since the ban on smoking, this place has isolated the bar area with a door that closes so smoking is allowed there, but not in the dining room. So if you go for happy hour (half price appetizers M-F), you must deal with the smoke. If you want smoke free, go to their other location on Balls Ford Road. Consistency rules at both locations. Daily specials (prime rib, salmon with lemon sauce) can't be beat for $9.99. Includes two sides I believe, or salad and side. Salads are very good as are sides. For appetizers, try the fried zuchini sticks. For soup, the French Onion soup is the best in Manassas. read more

I've logged in quite a few hours inside of City Tavern for a number of years. My parents and I enjoy going there for lunch and occasionally Sunday brunches. The broccoli and cheese soup is amazing when they have it for the soup of the day, and I've never had a complaint on the servers on the restaurant side. As far as the bar side goes, I prefer going in on the slower nights i.e Mondays - Wednesdays. The service is great, prices are reasonable, and you can actually get a seat/table! On the weekends I'll venture in occasionally; the atmosphere is completely different. If you like wall to wall packed and can tolerate longer drink times and pretty much standing room only then this is the place to go on the weekends in Old Town Manassas. read more

I had a very short time to plan a wedding reception for my son. Voulha and Thomas and Amber were AMAZING . They were so helpful in accommodating our needs. Flexible, honest, gracious. I found this restaurant by accident due to my time restrictions, but was amazed and blessed by their amazing food, amazing service, attention to my needs. I'm giving a 4 star rating even though my experience was a mixed bag. I ordered their Epic BLT and it came with a side of fries. I started in on the fries first before they could get cold. Too late! They were serious over done but were already lukewarm and limp. I was seriously disappointed as it was clear they had served me some cold greasy fries that had been sitting way too long. The Epic BLT however really lived up to its name. A TON of fresh crisp and meaty bacon that showed what City Tavern was capable of. Our server Eric was also first rate in every regard. My lunch companion loved his daily special and this would have been a five star review except for the sorry excuse for fries. Hot and crisp or not at all! read more
