I knew when I saw the notice in change of ownership on the restaurant window that things were going to go down hill... I have been coming to this restaurant since I was a kid (over 10 years) and have always enjoyed their pad Thai and orange chicken. It was easily my favorite Chinese restaurant. My last review was quite old, so I decided to update after my most recent visit, but my review still stands at 5 stars! I used to live in LA but moved away like 15 years ago, but this was a regular spot for me back then. So... fast forward to the present: I was forced to fly all the way to LA from Nashville for a 20 minute meeting (not exagerating). When I realized that the meeting was really close to City Wok I made it a point to get food because this is the only place I've ever found Sesame Beef prepared correctly. I brought my lunch box and ice packs to take some back to Nash, too. I ordered 2 full orders and they were made fresh, but it didn't take too long. The staff was super friendly, too. My Sesame Beef was just as good as I remember. The 2 orders were enough to be 4 meals (1 on my flight home and 3 dinners for the following week). I wish I could have eaten it slower, but it was just too good. If I need to go back for another stupid meeting, at least I know that this place is still going strong! read more

Have been coming here for 20 years. This place used to be the spot and place to get clean chinese food. It also used to be very crowded. It is dirty, unorganized and doesnt have the same ambiance. Secondly, the Chicken Chow Mein is the freshest I have tasted in a long time. City Wok is hands down one of my favorite spots in Studio City. Everything we ordered was excellent! the Sesame Beef was crispy and packed with flavor, the City Wok Chicken was amazing, and the Crab Rangoon wontons were some of the best I've had. The shrimp lo mein was loaded with shrimp and cooked perfectly. The service was friendly, the food came out fast, and the atmosphere was clean and relaxed. You can tell they care about both the food and the customer experience. Definitely worth stopping by if you're craving good Chinese food. We'll be back for sure. read more

This is a really good place to try everything. They have a lot of great items to choose from but me personally I did the chicken chow mein and I loved it. I didn't even have to wait five minutes. First the smell of the food upon arrival was pungent but not reflective of the dishes served. The mushu was bland, orange chicken lacked any crispness and smelled burnt and the rice was a mixture grainy and mushy. My son loved the corn soup Server was also incompetent. You must get it there. You absolutely must. They fire it all up fresh and hot in big woks. The "crunch" on the breading of everything is real. Crispy skin on crispy beef or orange chicken makes all the difference in the world, The chow mein is so good that it's wild!! The noodles have the perfect chew. It has new owners now and it was not only terrible compared to what it used to be, but it's probably the most terrible Chinese food I've ever had. Scratch that - maybe one of the worst meals I've ever had. Apologize for the hyperbole, but it really was awful. The firecracker sauce, which used to have rich spicy, smokey flavor, tasted like ketchup. The chow mein was flavorless and water down. So not only was there no flavor, there was very little of the actual sauce. No chopsticks, no sauce packets. Cutting corners across the board. What a way to save a couple bucks. Even the ambience was lacking. They removed any wall art to give it any kind of charm. People noticed. Food took a long time to get to our table. There were tables around us and we all looked at each other like "WTF happened to this place?!" We laughed about how bad it was. We all agreed to never come back. This used to be a great little spot. The beef & broccoli I received was watered down and my white rice is soggy. All my favorite orange chicken jernts have had issues lately, even the great Genghis Cohen, which has always been my favorite - last few times were very disappointing. I've tried many other places - I order extra crispy and what I get is anything but - more like mush. Well, City Wok listens and when you say extra crispy that is what you get. And it's very tasty, they have a smaller portion, which is perfect for one person. I did try their Kung Pao, but I wasn't thrilled with it, but their wonton soup was great, so were their egg rolls. This is for some food I got via DoorDash. I was using a happy hour discount but that was no excuse for this truly disappointing meal. And please look at my other reviews. I am not your standard Yelp malcontent! Everything was flavorless. Bland. Even doused with soy sauce and sriracha my black bean sole and *not remotely* Szechuan dumplings was some of the most boring Chinese food I can remember having. Wonton soup was okay but the wontons were as thick and clumpy as the dumplings. And I am comparing this to ordinary LA Chinese food, NOT the amazing places in the SGV. Any steam table joint I have eaten from in LA seems preferable. As an aging Jewish man, I seriously object! :) Portions were quite large, however. If you want to get fat while boring yourself to death this is the place. Also, I just looked it up and this is the real place that inspired the mispronounced "City Wok" on some South Park episodes a million years ago. While I don't necessarily endorse the stereotypical Chinese accents by Matt or Trey the proprietor used on the show, I have to say that this was a very "city" food experience. Surprisingly good Chinese food! My co-workers and I come here for meals and the staff is always friendly and patient. The portions are large and the price is reasonable. They're also speedy. This weekend I came in expecting my usual favorites, only to be told by my waiter that they've changed all the recipes to be "healthier" and are now under new management. As of August 16, 2026 my family and I will never be coming back to this restaurant. We have been coming here since 2018 our family tradition was to have dinner after a long day a universal Studios. But after today we are no longer coming back, the food was bland, our veggies were raw not fully cooked and the orange chicken was no crispy. Upon entering on June 8, 2025, I encountered Jeremy, who was not professional, customer service oriented, or courteous at all. He was just short mannered and rude. He did not even seem to be trying to be nice at all. I was coming to use the supposed birthday gift (free entrée) that was sent to me. When I attempted to use it, I was told that they were not accepting them anymore because, in a nutshell, they supposedly could not verify its legitimacy. Then, why was it sent to me, as it had been for many years? Honestly, if they wanted to verify it and serve me, they could. But, I was over this place. It was really disappointing because I had been coming here for 25+ years. There have been a good amount of changes over the years but, I still kept returning. However, I will not be returning this time. There was no welcoming feeling and polite friendliness that I had felt before. I've come to City Wok for over 8+ years and always thought the food was good, especially for the price. I loved feeling the familiarity and used to be greeted with smiles and a warm welcome. Out of all the years I've come here, I couldn't even think of a time when I had any complaint. That changed during my last visit to the restaurant. I walked up and noticed a container of fried rice open on the counter. While I was waiting, it was just left sitting there uncovered as the person packing to-go bags worked around it and directly over it. I stood there watching this for at least 10 minutes, and the container was still open the entire time. Finally, the worker closed it up, packed it, and handed the bag off to another employee--Ty, who I later found out is the manager. I asked Ty if that was the same rice that had been sitting open on the counter the whole time, and instead of giving me a calm, professional answer, he got defensive almost immediately. I wasn't being rude--I just didn't feel comfortable eating food that had been left uncovered like that, exposed to whatever might be floating around or falling into it. To avoid any issue, I even offered to pay for a fresh order--and I did. But even after paying again, the attitude from Ty didn't change. Rather than simply acknowledging the concern or apologizing, he continued to act like I was being unreasonable. He then told me that his establishment will no longer serve me from now on. After being a loyal customer for nearly a decade, this was really disappointing. I've never had an issue here before, and I didn't expect to be treated like I was out of line for asking a basic, valid question.
