I went in around noon today just to see how it looked after the renovations they completed this week. It definitely was an improvement even though the finish was a bit rough I hope it didn't cost very much, but at least it's clean. This store hadn't changed in at least 25 years. (As long as I lived here.) I start a conversation with one of the employees the owner must have recently hired. Very friendly. Apparently the owner decided to spend his days doing something else. After loitering and chattering the guy's ears off, I decided to order a roast beef sandwich. That was a mistake. When I got home and started to eat it, my first bite was concert of nastiness. The Dutch crunch was obviously stale. I took the roast beef off of the sandwich so that I could eat SOMETHING but that was clearly there the inedibility came from. I spat it out as I didn't want to figure out what was wrong with it. If I was a gambling man I'd guess it is just low end cold cuts that were living not to far from "Sal". When the guy said that he has an issue with having to through away spoilage, that should have been the red flag. I hate to leave a bad review for this place as I was really hoping it would still be my reliable corner deli. It's especially disappointing because the owner used to make terrific sandwiches that were made with fresh cold cuts and bread. If you want a good sandwich I recommend going to the deli in the Whole Foods at Fourth and Harrison, two blocks away. They are around $10 each but they are really good. (Get there early before the ciabatta rolls run out.) This concludes my review of Whole Foods. read more

They rip you off everytime if you pay with a card . The first time my friend noticed, but we didn't get receipts so couldn't verify.2ndtime didn't recognize til I got home. Solid little corner store. Has a nice selection of wine and beers that aren't ridiculously overpriced. There's also a drudged section of alcohol too. The store closes at 10pm on Friday and Saturday so it's perfect to pick up any last minute house party contributions. I've never ordered food from them, but there's a significant line that often forms in the afternoon when people arrive for the lunchtime rush. Given all of the options at the mall nearby, this place must really stand out judging by the size of the group it consistently draws. The owner is your typical Chinese man of few words. He comes off as disapproving dad whenever I'm there to stock up on alcohol, but I'm glad he recognizes and acknowledges me each time. You won't get five star friendly service, but you won't get a bunch of small talk either. read more

Pretty normal deli. I'm from Brooklyn NY and this is the closest to what I'm accustomed to back home (no bodega cat ) The hours fluctuate sometimes. It's usually open until 10 pm on Fridays & Saturdays, but on a rainy day or a slow Sunday, they will for sure close before 9 pm. read more

One time I needed 1 more egg for a recipe and the owner sold me 1 individual egg. Goes above and beyond if you ask but just isn't very talkative. Not many places in the city you can get a toasted sandwich for $6.50. Drinks are a little more expensive than places like target but cheaper than most of the corner stores/markets in San Francisco. A great, affordable corner store in SOMA, this odd little shop offers more then shelf stable food, drinks and the odd grocery. It has a deli counter and a small Chinese food counter. The deli counter has a good selection of sandwiches, even good vegetarian sandwiches. The liver wurst or mortadella never disappoints, and the pesto cheese sandwich is delicious. You can add avocado and sprout to everything as well, in true Californian spirit. The Chinese food counter usually has 1-2 specials, and they have fried rice, fried noodles and steamed rice in the back. The specials can range from roast chicken to meat and veggie stir fry. One time there was curry chicken even. In my opinion, it beats Panda Express in quality and quantity - probably super cheap because of the limited choice. A sandwich ranges from $4.75 to $8 depending on how much stuff you pile on. The small size Chinese food is enough to feed a reasonable appetite and that is a steal at $4. They also take all major credit cards including AmEx. It is amazing to find these prices and quality in SF nowadays, and remains a lunch staple for me. read more

Very convenient corner store with lots of drink/snack options. They serve home cooked chinese food during lunch and sell sandwiches any time of the day. The owner Kenny is not very talkative but once you become a regular he's friendly. The hours are pretty random. Sometimes they close early, sometimes close late, sometimes not open. The layout is a little odd, but the prices are great, and that's what rounds this review up to 3 stars. Deli sandwiches are generally just under $4. On a hot day like today, it was very tempting to delve into the freezer case for an ice cream sandwich, too. In the back is the small convenience store selection and well-stocked drink cooler. I'm reviewing this simply because I keep forgetting their number and forget what they're called. They've saved me on two occasions now, they have ice in their freezer and when you're making cocktails, you need ice... so you use The Choice! Yup, the owner is a total jerk. He lacks customer service and is pretty useless unless it comes to taking your money. Citys (where's the apostrophe?) Choice is strategically put in a area that has no other corner markets in sight. This gives the owner the upper hand within this neighborhood, but his store lacks a variety of products. He sells the usual goods: chips, coffee, snacks, beer, and wine. The only thing working for him is the deli. His wife makes great sandwiches and I'm a fan of the Chicken Salad sandwich. I won't try the Chinese food, but that's just me. His wife is much more polite and friendlier and he could take queues from her. Personally, if I'm giving the opportunity, I'll take my business to Fred's down on sixth; they seem to appreciate your business and patronage unlike this clown. read more

Good choice. There are many places you'll spend more than $4.50 and get back much less than Jennie-O turkey slices, lettuce, tomato, pickles and mustard on a wheat roll. Not so here. Good sandwich at a great price. There are many places you'll spend less than $3 on a double shot Americano. But not many where they'll open a carton of nonfat milk from inventory just because you asked. Indeed so here. Good Americano with great service. You won't regret this choice. read more

Ya know what? When you gotta choose, choose The Choice. I've been coming here for lunch for going on 2 years now, and their quality has never wavered. The ladies who work there are consistently friendly and good at what they do. Especially when it comes to sandwiches. I highly recommend Tuna on Dutch Crunch w/ everything, and some Baked Lays layered in for good measure. The perfect "chipwich." If you need something to drink, the fridges are full. If you're out of housewares, they've got 'em. The coffee is good and the prices are excellent. It's a corner store. It's not Whole Foods. And it's in SOMA, not PacHeights. I'd be thrilled to have this place in my neighborhood. But I'm happy enough I get to head over there from work. read more

Ew, ew, ew. I walked in and was instantly turned off. The store is completely disorganized, dirty, and ghetto (but not fabulous). I asked for an iced coffee, and they didn't even know what it was. I'm never going back. The ladies started talking amongst each other (trying to figure out what an iced coffee was, I presume) and I just walked out. Best decision I ever made. I'm near this place every day and occasionally stop in for a drink (they have lots of choices) or snack. I was afraid to try any of their prepared food because the presentation is not exactly appealing but one day I was desperate and tried a tuna sandwich - and was pleasantly surprised! It was everything a deli sandwich should be and very carefully prepared. They also washed their hands plenty of times behind the counter which made me feel good about it. I went back another day for an avocado sandwich and was even more impressed. The avocado was good and the price was amazing! I usually just go to Whole Foods for a quick lunch, but this place might become a new regular spot for me. read more

They make great sandwiches for an excellent price. Good selection of drinks and other sundry items. They actually stock a good selection of non-soda, non-alcoholic beverages. This is not a coffee shop though. Don't go in expecting a barista bar. They serve basic coffee. The folks giving this place bad reviews because they won't make coffee drinks need to get a grip. Also store hours are now really regular and they are open late night as well. There is no seating. This is just a take out deli counter in a convenience store. read more

As I was overpaying $3.29 for a small bottle of water, the owner's husband asked me who I was voting for in the election, then told me that women should not be politicians, a women's place is in the home, and that I better get back home to start being a mother. this is my corner store. or it would be if it were ever open. i swear, their opening hours are more sporadic than a rabid mongoose. there are times when that front door is chained shut for days on end. it's a real crap shoot going here. good thing i live in the adjacent building and there are two gas stations on the block (although neither of them sell anything more substantial than cigarettes). i cannot vouch for the quality of the food there but it's cheap... and looks like it too. read more
