I was pulled in for lunch here as my colleague wanted sandwiches, I walked over from my office and I was immediately transported to a Bodega in NYC during a summer of 2020. The staff greeted everyone that walked in and took everyone's orders. In the store they were playing Latin music and it seemed to keep the energy high and the beat uplifting. Now for the actual food.... They know what they are doing for sure! The sandwich was made exactly how I specified it and it was delicious! pairing it with a Diet Coke and a bag of crisps! Be careful - a lot of customers have been getting SICK. You can read others Yelp review. I specifically asked for no spread on my sandwich, and they still added this weird spread. I am highly allergic to mayo, and I ate this without knowing and got extremely ILL for numerous days. There is a lady who always never smile and frowns a lot. She was the one who prepared the sandwich and got me food poisioning. Honestly, this place is being added to the lineup for reliable, efficient and pretty good subs. If you aren't looking for Sammy's on 2nd or you blink, there's a chance that you miss it for sure. When I went for the first time, I definitely walked by the small bodega-style store. The front of the store is a convenience store offering anything that you need, from candy and snacks (tempting with the placement too) to beverages. Closer to the back of the store, I found two employees ready to take my order. Here, you know you are getting a good nicely made sandwich. The employees were kind and friendly. They made sure to ask me if I wanted all of the fix-ins on the sandwich and didn't get annoyed as some do when I asked for clarification. I ended up purchasing the grilled chicken sandwich with chipotle cheddar cheese, no mayo and pickles, on what I think was a Dutch Crunch bread. It was great. Can't complain about the quality and the employees were quick with it. Adding to the rotation and I'll see you there soon enough! read more

Nice ratio of mustard mayo lettuce etc. Only small nitpick is I think romaine lettuce was used as opposed to iceberg. Overall a solid 4. Atmosphere: has somewhat of a bodega charm with the minor chaos but lacking that loud yelling volume which some crave. Decent size, feels clean I'd give it a 4. Service: mostly great except when I order a sandwich I want to list out the items once and only once. I have things going on and I'm on the move. I repeated twice when the gentlemen went through each phase of the sandwich making process. This is a very nitpick comment I realize so this may only apply to sandwich heads like myself. Overall 3.5. Intrigued by the cult Yelp following, I finally tried this place. They're no longer serving the Mediterranean items, but still have lot of cold cuts based sandwiches. Everything I tried was decent, though only the House Special stood out as something noteworthy. House Special on Rye: A nontraditional pastrami sandwich. No sauerkraut. Not toasted or melted. But there's creamy avocado! It was my favorite of the three sandwiches I tried, even though it had the least amount of meat. All the flavors just kind of worked well together. Godfather on Sourdough Roll: With 3 cheese and 5 meats, this is a pretty massive sandwich. Though it's not like all those ingredients each come thick. It's more like a few slices of each, but together, there's still a lot between the buns. Generally speaking I liked it. But I wasn't a fan of the bologna, kinda made the whole thing taste cheaper than it really is. With mortadella and salami in the mix, why even bother with bologna? Muffuletta on Sweet Roll: Check your expectations at door and might enjoy this. Don't expect it to be anything like what you'd get in NOLA. It's more like an Italian hoagie. Hole-in-the-wall sandwich spot located in a liquor store. It looks like nothing special but it's straightforward, delicious deli food. I got the Turkey Club which was chock full of meat and delicious vegetables. The bacon was freshly prepared and crunchy, and the avocado sliced on the spot. They have three kinds of mayo and mustard too, which I highly recommend trying. My bf got a vegetarian sandwich that he also enjoyed! Our total was around $27 before tip. The owner was super friendly and chatted us up while he took our orders. Businesses like these, especially in a neighborhood like FiDi, really got hit hard by the pandemic. It was sad to hear about how Sammy's on 2nd still hasn't recovered but I am glad I discovered them so I can return to support small businesses! One thing to note is that Sammy, the owner, told us his pandemic hours are not accurate on Yelp and Google. I've been coming here for about 1-2 years getting sandwiches whenever I forget my meal prep or want something different to eat. I even always get the same sandwich, but after my most recent visit I got severe food poisoning with aggressive vomiting and it was the food from here that was the culprit. First look of my sandwich, I noticed one side had significantly more turkey than the other side. Which I though was a little weird. I started to eat my sandwich and only tasted old Dutch crust bread. I open my sandwich and saw what was really inside. They put one piece of bacon on each side and the avocado was at the end of one half of the sandwich. I had one of the oddest sandwiches at Sammy's. It's their $7.99 House Special, a pita stuffed with hot pastrami, Swiss cheese and avocado wedges along with lettuce, tomatoes and red onions (see photo). It was a head-scratcher when I ordered it out of curiosity, but then I devoured it at work and thought it was unusually good. Maybe because the combination tasted decadently fattening for a lunchtime bite. I could barely manage to keep the ingredients from making a mess on the melamine surface of my desk. The entire deli selection in the display case looked good, mostly Mediterranean fare from what I saw and very nicely presented. On the other side is quite a selection of wine, beer, spirits, and other beverages. In other words, if Armageddon happens while you're strolling on Second, I'd duck in here since you'd be set. Yes, this one is definitely a cut above most delis in the city, so I'll be back. Now I'm assuming Sammy refers to the owner, though I keep thinking the logo is a tribute to Sammy Sosa. Am I wrong? It can be surprisingly difficult to find good deli-style sandwiches, and I find myself coming back here regularly when I've got a hankering for a well-made deli sandwich.
