I met a friend there last night for a drink and a chat, thinking.. it's Sunday night.. should be slow right. Who'd be at the bar? Everyone was at the bar! Including a live band that wasn't that bad. Notice I didn't say they were good.. but my ears weren't bleeding by the time we left lol The drinks are stiff and well priced, and from what little contact I did have, the staff seems nice as well. A LOT of regulars were there, so it was cool sorta seeing people interacting. The chat I was trying to have with my friend was soon drown out by the aformentioned band.. so we left. If you want to be packed on a 200 sq feet patio with 40 people and wait 30 minutes for the understaffed crew of 1 serving (50 ppl sometimes). While the owner sits there drinking and watching his customer base wait and wait while doing nothing (but stare at the bartender) then this is the spot for you!! read more

Dive bar. Period. I keep coming back here time and time again. Why? 1. They have a decent selection of brew. 2. It's close to my apartment and sushi place. 3. I can watch my car getting washed across the street while having a beer on the patio. The reviews for this place seem to be all over the map-and it's understandable why. It seems clear to me that this place has gloom or doom written all over it. I've been here on nights where everything was cool- crowd, entertainment, brew selection etc. However, I've also been sitting at the bar with a friend or two, surrounded by some of the most dried up looking drunks I've seen since The Iceman Cometh. It's like the live reenactment of the image I had of bars as a kid- a shady place where anything can happen. Food? Kind of. The only thing I've ever ordered off the menu was the chicken wings. Being a Buffalo native I will say they were pretty good-it's all in the sauce after all. However the wings themselves were small. So much so that I was still hungry afterwards. Just a note before the review: The four stars is for the 'Dive Bar' category. A dive bar is what it is... a dive bar. It took me awhile to finally go to Clancy's. I moved to Long Beach about five months ago and finally went to the bar in the easiest walking (read:stumbling) distance from my house. The waitresses/bartenders are cute, the beer was good (Guinness), and the atmosphere was... interesting. The Karaoke was exactly how I like it... drunken and bad. If I wanted to see great singers singing like they're expecting a record producer in the audience to sign them to a multi-million dollar deal, I'll watch American Idol. Drunk/bad singers having fun is what it's all about. I liked that for the most part, it wasn't so loud that I could actually have a conversation with friends. I also liked the look of the copper covered tables, but they did make my hands smell like a handful of pennies. I had a great time AND I was able to stumble home. read more

This place was just ten kinds of awful. First the noise level from the horrible bands playing inside was beyond uncomfortable. Then they apparently never heard of air conditioning since it was about ten degrees hotter inside the bar than outside. The beer prices were just plain stupid, $8 and up for pints is wrong by any definition. Its not a very comfortable set up, cramped spaces, tiny "patio" and lousy seating makes this the worst bar I've ever been to in southern california. Avoid, avoid, avoid. read more

They have karaoke and it's entertaining to say the least. Parking can suck because there are only 6 spaces. It's a neighborhood bar that is walking distance from everything from grocery to the beach so that makes for a great location. They make an interesting Long Island so I stick to that when I go. To the point. I once ordered a dirty martini and even after sending it back for a fix, it was all bad so keep it simple when you come here. There not making any promises. It can get a bit loud when they have a band so save the conversation for intermission. Not a place I would consider for food, ever. Too damn hot or too damn salty. I used to LOVE Clancys. I went here for like 5 or 6 years. I knew all the bartenders and staff. They would bend over backwards to make you happy. I love the food, people, and the drinks!! This is only place I could justify having a Apple Martini with my steak and eggs at 8am... However, The owner who is a bit of jerk decided to remodel. My $6 martini has now become $8.50. I don't know why but that was the last straw, $8.50 for a martini!??! Many of the regulars have gone to other bars like Redroom and Vroom. The place changed. It will never be the same.. read more

This is my "neighborhood bar" - meaning it's close to where I live. Because my roommate and I wanted some place close we decided to grab some nachos there last night. Their nachos are pretty good, we had them with chicken. However, the service was non-existent. It was an off time, there were only about 3 people in the bar, and I think two of them were the band for the evening. My roomie and I walked over to a table and sat down. I'm almost positive the bartend/server saw us come in. The bartender/server then walked past us to the kitchen (yes, she even glanced our way) and back to the bar. We probably sat there for a good 15-20 minutes (wasn't watching the clock but I should have been) before I finally got up, found her and told her we wanted some nachos. "Oh! Okay, I'll put in the order." Another 15 or so minutes went by....I got up, walked around the corner to the bar where she was standing and raised my hands to say "So, where are our nachos????" (BTW, she still hadn't come to our table to take a drink order or even say hello, how are ya?!). She told me they should be coming, she put the order in. I'm thinking "so, how long does it really take, when there's NO ONE ELSE TO SERVE, to make a plate of nachos???" Another 5 or so minutes went by and she managed to bring us a couple plates and utensils and reassured us that our food would be out shortly. It wasn't "short" really but they did finally arrive at our table. Oh, and when she brought these simple items she STILL didn't ask if we wanted anything to drink. When she brought the nachos she finally asked us if we wanted something to drink. Water, thanks. :D After we finished eating, she came and pretended to be a real server and removed the stuff from our table and used her sweet little smile, asking us if we'd like anything else. I thought "nice time for you to be chipper and act like you're actually serving us...as we get closer to 'tip time'." We ended up walking up to the bar to pay our bill, she was busy with the next two customers that had come in. We decided to just leave her $8 in cash for our $7.52 bill and left very frustrated - but at least we weren't starving anymore. Generally, speaking Clancy's isn't a bad place. But my advice is - don't go on an off time especially if you're looking for food! Their service has been known to stink during these times (and sometimes worse than others). I think they forget in the evening that they serve food, too, not just booze. P.S. I just read a review by Janie and noticed that she mentioned the bouncer. I ran across him the other day while walking down Broadway (both to and from my destination) and he asked for 60 cents for the bus and when I told him I didn't have any money he asked me if I had a smoke. And no, he doesn't know me, it was completely random. Interesting. read more

Not bad! I remember walking by this place before it was remodeled, and I would ALWAYS see a couple of trashy guys fist-fighting in the front of the bar. Definitely a deterrent. BUT, it looks much classier from the outside now that it got a face lift. My co-workers and I swung by here after stuffing our faces at Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles on a Friday night, and had a great time! It's actually really nice inside, and pretty modernized. There was live music with a couple of great performers. It was an independent sound, very Jason Mraz/Black Keys - ish.. if those two sounds mixed together, that's kinda what the live music was like... I guess? Anywho, had a great time. Clancy's is a watering hole that was in the George family for two generations. During the time the George family owned the restaurant/bar/grill, such events as Pope John Paul II visited Long Beach, the building of the world trade center, and the inaugural race of the Long Beach grand prix. During those heady times, Clancy's was a sanctuary for all walks of life. Judges, lawyers, McDonald Douglas executives would hoist a beer to the likes of naval shipyard welding crews, union stevedores, and Harley Davidson bike club enthusiasts. The formula for that success was pretty simple. Keep the rent low, keep the place in good repair, offer good food/drink at very reasonable prices and customers would come. Even though the parking at Clancy's has always been a challenge, the customers would find a way to shuffle in. In addition to the reasonable eats and drinks, the George family would have happy hour food offerings which would consist of salsa and chips, vegetarian spaghetti, a salad of sorts, or sometimes a fruit bowl. Especially for every happy hour, there would be Clancy's happy hour tuna salad sandwiches which consisted of tuna salad mix placed between a piece of wheat and white bread. The customers loved these little gems (recipe listed below). In 2006 given to health reasons, the establishment was sold and major changes ensued. Now the facility is greatly updated with flat screen TV's adorning every wall. Gone are the booths, gone are the happy hour food buffet, and gone are the many grand prix prints affixed to the rafters. The one thing that has remained constant is the helpful and friendly staff and the good extended menu. The place has Karaoke parties once a week and features live bands from time to time. Smokehouses Mama's Boys have been known to play here from time to time. All in all, the updated bar area is nice. However, the price increase to cover costs may take a few years to get back to a competitive price point. This place is comfortable to meet up with your friends as it is not loud and crazy at most times. (I guess it is a nice way to say not that busy). A word to the wise, I would bring plenty of money as the price structure is not cheap. Clancy's Happy Hour Sandwiches Ingredients 2 Cans of albacore tuna (5 oz) 1 Dill Pickles (finely chopped) 2 Celery stalks (finely chopped) 4 Scallions (finely chopped) 1 TBSP Lemon (juiced) 1/3 Cup of mayonnaise 1 TBSP Yellow mustard 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp pepper Iceberg lettuce (separated) Loaf of white bread Load of wheat Bread Method Preparation Mix the Albacore tuna, dill pickles, celery, lemon juice, and scallions together. Add in the mustard and mayonnaise and mix in to make a uniform tuna salad. Add in the salt and pepper to taste. Put a piece of wheat bread on a cutting board, spread the tuna salad over the wheat bread and add a piece of iceberg lettuce. Place a piece of white bread over the iceberg lettuce and cut the sandwich stack into quarters. Repeat the stacking operation until all pieces of white and wheat bread are consumed. It was a cool spot. Good selection of beer and had a great band on that Sat night we were there. We had a great time. Service was ok. It was packed and we were sort of a big group with separate checks. But she managed well. I did have a drama though. My bill was $40 and they charged my card twice so I was billed $80. I didn't realize until later that week on my bank statement. I called and they were apologetic and said that their machine has done this before in the past (BRING CASH!!!). It was annoying because they couldn't just refund my card, I had to physically come in with a print-out of my bank statement showing I got charged twice. THAT WHOLE PROCESS WAS VERYYYYYYY ANNOYING!!! So I did just that and went in the following week. I had to stay on top of it though with names and times the manager was going to be there, etc. When I went in, they knew why I was there, apologized again and gave me a free beer. So that was cool. Since I'm not from LBC, I probably won't go back. But for some reason I'm around there and people I'm with want to go, I'll go. Again, good beer and good music. This is one of my all time favorite bars and the reason is simple...pain seeps from the floor boards in this place and it is refreshing. As a bears fan, it is one of the only places to go to watch bears games on sundays. Over the past few years this place has gone WAY downhill. Food was always above average and well priced, and service used to be great. The service currently is absolutely awful the main owner/manager/bartender honestly cannot hear. Waitress that is normally there is terrible. I have sat through an entire game and not been asked if I wanted a drink. Place is filthy, bathroom has flies and smells to have some type of mold under the floor or drain. A place that I have been going to for 3 or 4 years has probably seen me the last time. read more

i love dive bars! and this one is right across the street from roscoe's! maybe it was just an awesome night...or maybe it was the awesome people i was with...but whatever it was, it was totally rad. There was an Irish band playing which set the hand-clapping-get-up-and-river-dance kinda of mood. The bar patrons were so fun. An old man fell off of the bar stool. One guy with dreads was banging his fist so darn enthusiastically on the bar counter, he'd sooner keel over than stop bludgeoning that counter. Trying to park...a little troubling, especially when coming from south side of Broadway. Their parking lot is super small so you'll need to find parking elsewhere. The bar is relatively small but it's cozy, they have a few tables and space for live music. Music was great, drinks were okay and it was fairly calm for a bar on a Friday night (it was a rainy night though) and it didn't seem trashy or scary at all. Seems like a place to see your friend casually perform onstage and /or a meeting spot before you go and do something else. Although I did not eat there, I saw your usual bar food at tables, chicken strips, french fries,etc... the wait staff came by to make sure you were good on drinks and did routine cleaning maintance. Start with the positive: Enthusiastic, friendly young staff. Food is good. Creative drinks. And convenient location. Here's why it sucks: 7 bucks for a warm beer. The male female ratio averages about 20 to 1. Maybe it's a gay bar for ugly dudes and no one told me? The other patrons style choices seem to be the result of lost bets. Their Karaoke night features some of the worst singers I have ever heard. Not haha bad but let's get the fuck out of here and never listen to The Doors again bad. And they turn it up so loud! The Good: The crowd is chill, the design layout, front door guy. The Bad: The keep the bar area as hot as Arizona weather, incredibly over priced beer and drinks in general, service is horrible, it is just as hard to get a beer as it is to get a cup of water. I was so upset to pay $21 for three shoot the root drinks which i can get all three drinks at Shannon's or LAX area bars for $9-$12, this is an Irish pub and one of their traditional drinks cost the same as a Jager Bomb, ridiculous, also Pabst is $4 and all other beers are $6-$7, the overall attitude of the staff was unfriendly and just plain boring, I enjoy the music at this joint but will only have soda there from now on. read more

Good ole faithful Clancy's! I love this place for the good pool tables and the good competition. I hate the parking and the lack of decent beers but love the hot wait-staff and the bartenders. Decor is okay but its a great bar if you're just looking for something other than your regular go to. The first night I was there on a Wednesday I was asked to get in on a 8 ball tournament which i gladly did and almost walked away with the title but lost to a giant... which i was glad because he was drunk and i didn't want to get my ass beat... so go and have fun! read more

I've only come here a couple of times when my band has played. It is a few dollars more expensive than the other dive venues in town, but the bar staff has always been accommodating, and the crowd is fun. Because of the prices I don't think I would make it my go-to spot, but it nice for a change of pace once in a while. Although, it is a bummer to have to cut through the band to use the ladies room. This was the venue of the one of only two live shows I got to see of my Lesbian Husband's old band, Ask Alice... very pub-like setting, all that wood made for great acoustics, and it was an excellent show. I was steadily getting drunk and falling off my stool while singing along to basically every song (I had the CD). Earlier in the evening, though, I had some very excellent fish 'n chips... as a connoiseur, I'd have to say I lament living back up north, I have had few to compare to the ones here. The other band who played had a super cute lead singer... I consoled myself with hitting on another gay boy, a chunky cub with curly hair, mmm. Oh, there were also the creepy groupies who came all the way down from Santa Barabara, but I was too busy attempting to make out with... oh, he had an odd name, almost musical, but it escapes me now... oh wells! Basically, this seems like a great bar and one that is on my list to return to next time I visit down south...:) read more

Another loud funky place to booze at. Most of the locals that frequent this place(including myself) are characters. The booze is moderately priced and the place looks cool inside(from a dive bar perspective). However I wouldn't exactly classify this place as a dive bar. They have pretty good food too(as far as bar food goes). I especially like their fish and chips which are better than most restaurants. But then again, everything tastes better when your drunk having a good time. They recently remodeled the place and added more outside patio space, seats and a big screen tv, nice. The bartenders and waitresses are always friendly and attentive. The place always has a friendly atmosphere and gets quite loud. No matter what you look like or how your dressed, you can just mosey on up to the bar and instantly join the fun. This is why I give it 4 stars. I noticed lately they have bands and djs now. This looks like a dive bar, and maybe it is. But there's a fun, fun crowd inside that knows their karaoke! They have a strange happy hour "buffet", which is some corndogs and tatertots or something. I wouldn't touch it if I were you. The stained glass and the comfortable tables and booths make this one of the best places to be for karaoke in Long Beach. Not fancy at all, but cheap, strong drinks make up for that. read more

I never went to Clancy's back in its dive days, so I can't compare, but this is now a really cool bar. By cool I mean friendly, unpretentious, with fairly priced drinks. The person that complained about the beer selection must not have noticed that they have Allagash White! Good selection of premium vodkas too, I was only charged $5 for a Stoli and soda, although it was $6 the next time I came. Still a bargain. My band played a few weeks ago, and it was so refreshing to be greeted with huge smiles by ALL of the staff. They really treat bands well here, from the drink tickets (good for premium drinks!) to the % of the bar tab they give you. Parking ain't easy but that's typical for this part of town. Spread the good word about Clancy's- they should be rewarded! Did I mention how gosh-darned nice they are? read more

Nevertheless, the waitress was a sweetheart. The people who were there were really nice and social. They would just come up to our table and start chatting with us.
