my neighbor loved the summer camp for her son, so i tried it this summer 2025, and enrolled my daughter for a week long day camp. long story short, they left my 11 yr old daughter at a gas station 50 miles/1 hr from home!! yes, the 18 to 20 yr old kids in charge of driving and accountability for 20+ kids failed to do a basic head count/ roster check. my daughter came out of the bathroom and noticed everyone and the 2 vans were gone! she borrowed a gas station employee's phone to call me and ask me to pick her up. thankfully, even though she was scared, she kept her head, didn't let strangers know that she was alone, and didn't cry until she was in my car on our way home from the rec center. i'm not going to go into the details of my behavior over this situation at a time when kids are being taken in increased numbers and human trafficking is real! let's just say, although i am a highly educated, a veteran, has never tried a drug, never smoked, married to an army col, and the daughter of veteran parents who are both police officers... i was prepared to get go to jail! my eldest daughter as ready to post bail and pick me up and the family lawyer was informed. i didn't get arrested, my daughter did get best to block me from physically showing my outrage. if you live your children, don't don't don't leave your kids in their care! read more

This is my updated review from the last one. Again, I enjoy what this place has to offer: the pool and gym room are great. My updated concern is the staff should be attentive to the shampoo dispenser in the shower stalls. Twice already, I keep seeing hand soap instead of shampoo in the shower stalls. Advice to those who use the shower stalls often: double-check the dispenser because you could be using hand soap without realizing it. read more

This place has the worst follow-up. I signed up for tennis lessons with my husband, however leading up to the first day of class my husband was sent off on a month-long business trip. I called the facility to get a refund/credit for the class and the staff member said she would transfer me to the director who handles the classes. I left this so-called director 3 voicemails and 2 physical messages with the front staff for a call back. I finally received a call back 2 days later and she said she would provide a credit for the class and that it would be emailed to us. Well guess what? No email. I guess I'm going to track this person down again. Now about the gym it is lacking in equipment and poorly maintained. The one side of cable machine has been broken for the past month. The free weight station is caked in dirt and debris. The yard outside needs better pest control with pesky mosquitoes everywhere ready for suck your blood and giant cockroaches in the outer perimeter of the facility. I guess you get what you pay for which is very underwhelming at best. Residents be aware. read more

I really enjoy coming to this gym. Not everything is new and super upcoming but you can definitely get a great workout in and there are plenty of fun activities to do. I tend to take my friends here for racket ball and other things due to the very affordable day pass prices. read more

The center offers indoor & outdoor full-size basketball courts, tennis courts, skate park, indoor pool, fitness center, and racketball courts. During peak hours access can be tight for racketball & pool swim lanes so it is good to plan ahead. read more

This is my go-to gym in Round Rock and has been since my wife and I moved here. The cost is super-reasonable for the resources they offer. We only pay $55 for three months of membership for both of us. They're always adding new machines to the gym and it's very clean and cool inside. The pool with lap swimming is very convenient and there are free lockers and showers. The best times to go are weekday late mornings, afternoons, and after 7:00. The weekends aren't bad either! Usually you won't need to wait for a machine and they're never all full from my experience. I also like the trail behind the gym for biking and walking. There aren't many options for bench press/squats unless you use free weights. read more

The disorganization of this places beyonds me. You talk to the staff and they don't have an answer or the right information. The administration says payments over the phone is allowed , I asked the front desk about making payments they agree that I could easily do it with them. Now I am here unable to go to work because of all the miss information shared through this process. The lack of professionalism and a knowledge of the staff and constant misinformation prevene the to make a simple payment to allow my kid on the child care and the front office couldn't even provide a card of the department therefore no information. I also go here because it's the closest gym with an indoor pool and I also pay non-Round Rock resident prices, which is a bit higher. I probably would be happier if I didn't have to pay more but it's a good little place. I've been going a few times a week for about six months and am pretty happy. I mostly come for the water aerobics program so don't feel qualified to review much else. As far as evening water aerobics goes, the instructors are great. Not too harsh but give you options to push yourself harder. The 6 pm classes fill up very quickly so I try to be there at 5:30 when they hand rubber bracelet "tickets" out. Recently there have been more stringent rules about when we can get the equipment out for class and when we can get in the pool so that's been frustrating. The pool is pretty large, it's very rare when you have to share lanes when a class isn't going on. They keep the water somewhat cool though - in the 80s - which can feel freezing on some days but now that it's getting cooler they're keeping the room with the pool a bit warmer. I like that this is not a 'kid's pool'. I can do laps or participate in the water aerobics without having to dodge children like at my neighborhood pool. I have seen kids doing laps and they're allowed during the 'free swim' time on the schedule but for the most part it's for adults. Other aspects of the gym: I like to have my own locker and the rental prices are pretty reasonable..I think it's 4 dollars a month? Worth it to me! I'm not a fan of the horrible horrible sinks in the locker room. I actually felt dirtier after using them. But the showers aren't that bad for, you know, a gym locker shower. This is an active community center, there are after school programs and teenagers using the gym and skate park. I think that's really cool but some may not like all the activity with the kids. I think the idea for a raised track from Sandy is a good one. The weight / cardio room seems to be adequate, my husband has used it several times and enjoyed it. There are lots of classes like jazzercise, yoga ball, and the new zumba class is hugely popular. All in all I like my gym. read more

For me this place is wonderful! I would give it 5 stars if it stayed open just a little bit later but I understand! We have been members for a few years now and it's always been clean and convenient to our home. I use the pool 100% of the time. It's always clean, warm, and they write the pH level and the temperature in case you need to know. They have ample benches, hooks and a private area inside the pool as well as locker rooms. Because when we came in next time we were given completely different information. So the whole reason we were signing up ended up being nonexistent. The front staff makes up the rules as they go along. I am told one thing then they tell me something different then say that it depends. One of the things I love best about living in Round Rock is the Clay Madsen Rec Center. I'm not even exaggerating here. Seriously love this place. Why, you ask? 1) It is super-duper cheap. I pay $15/month for unlimited access to swimming, basketball, weight room, group fitness (which I will talk more about later), etc. At a regular gym, I would probably pay $50 or more for all of this. Oh! And there's no "initiation fee" or auto draft. You just pay when your membership is due. 2) No cheesy hard sale gym gimmicks going on here. It's straight-forward and everyone is pretty friendly. 3) Group fitness classes. They offer a variety of classes like interval training, circuit training, Zumba, and other stuff FOR FREE. Such a great deal. The instructors are kind and talented. 4) Babysitting- CMRC offers childcare when you work out for a measly $2 an hour. There are a variety of toys and the room is clean. They only take a limited number of kids, so I know my kiddo won't get trampled on, either. 5) Bootcamp- I've been doing the 5:30 am bootcamp since September and it is incredible! It's only $50 a month (I've seen ones around town for up to $200), and it's awesome. The instructor creates intense, targeted workouts using a variety of formats and equipment. AND IT IS HELD INDOORS! I hate working out outside when it is super hot or cold, so this is a must for me. I usually think exercising is boring, but this bootcamp makes it enjoyable. 6) Community Programs- There are all sorts of programs and classes held here to benefit the community. One program I have signed my daughter up for is Kinderdance. It was inexpensive and really fun for her. Thinking about joining the rec center? DOOOOOO IT!!! read more

I really do love certain things about Clay Madsen, they are reasonably priced and the trainers and classes they have are great. HOWEVER: there have been a few negatives and the one yesterday was what makes me post this. I came in to an Aqua class and was 2 minutes late. I was already dressed in my suit and we had always in the 8 years I had been there, been given a 5 minute leeway. I got there and was told that I could not have a band and as I was talking to one person about another handed another lady a band at which point they ran after her to get it back. I did voice my frustration as I did not see any documentation and did say I would be adding a review to yelp and got a very flippant response to go right ahead. I was then told by another person that they had a managers meeting and this is when they decided to put the hard stop on it. Now I looked on their site today and I am in the RockActive FB page and I did not see any notices about this policy change anywhere. I said I would go swim laps and went and swam at the far end of the pool and was watched throughout my swim. Funny thing is.. they were not apparently watching the lady who came in a half hour late (and always does) who jumped right into the class and worked out. Others had bands taken away and were made to sit on a bench and wait. I am not sure when not supporting a person to work out became and issue over a late entry, but especially with pool classes where you are dressed for that and can't switch easily due to clothing I find it awful. Other gyms I have been in understand that people may run late due to traffic, jobs, meetings, kids etc. This center has a lot of corporate account clients that use their gym and support locally, if they cannot understand that life happens, it is a problem. I am sure there will be no response from Clay any more than when my friend emailed Mary about the playroom with questions/concerns, but I feel I should warn people about this behavior. If they do not want to support people when it comes to working out even when they are running behind that is a concern. read more

This place USED to be good for indoor volleyball, as you can see from my previous review. I even got in on the annual membership, but it has gone downhill from there. First off, it's packed, usually 30-40 people, 50-ish people when it's busy. Play starts around 7:30 pm, but people start signing up a little earlier. Then it's a race to determine who gets to write their name on the board. The competition has gotten worse over time (not Clay Madsen's fault though). However, they only keep 1 court open until 8:15ish, when they finish setting up the 2nd court, which is insulting. Why not open both courts up at 7:30 pm or earlier? There have been too many times where there would be 40+ people, but everyone is waiting on 1 court. It's absurd. The Clay Madsen staff said that it's "bad for business if they kick everyone off the basketball courts earlier than 8". People play on the basketball courts ALL.THE.TIME. The joke among the players is that you would only get to play 2 games before you would go home. Pretty pathetic. I haven't been in months because of this and I won't be renewing my annual membership. I'll be taking my business to other nearby gyms. read more

So dirty rarely cleaned ..and not working.. This is a place that has the worst customer service staff I have ever seen. Insulting and nasty to a guest and then after making two complaints my membership was suspended. Here comes that Black guy! I don't like those people anyway! And more... I took it upon myself to get feedback from a few Black folk here in Round Rock, Texas and the term "modern day Jim Crow" was used about this place. My only complaint is that the air conditioning doesn't always function correclty and the teachers can't quite remember my daughter's name. Even so, my kiddo really likes her classes. I sign up for an advanced tennis class twice and the first one was delay by the storm we had. the recreation center did not have the audacity to call and said when they would have the lesson reschedule. That was the first class. In the second session, I asked the instructor when will they be getting new tennis balls that the ones they are using are really flat. the tennis instructor reply to me in a loud voice " if you don't like that I am using old tennis balls then you don't have to be here". I replied to him that it's not the way it works. I and the rest of the class pay to have quality not mediocrity of an instructor and or equipment. The last time I checked, I am the customer and the customer should be able to ask questions. This instructor is horrible at customer service and he thinks he is doing me a favor instead of me doing them the favor of signing up for classes. I will never, ever sign up for a class with them or take my kids to any classes that Round Rock park has. horrible customer service and uneducated and ungrateful staff. read more

Great place to workout without all the crowds of other gyms and the music isn't overbearing. This place is excellent for those who love outdoor running. Behind the building is a nice little trail that goes to AW Grimes but can lead to a variety of courses around town including Rabb House and the trail behind it leading to Kenney Fort and the downtown area. So perfect for short or longer distance runs without having to deal with a lot of traffic Improvements I would like to see: 1) I wish the room with fitness balls was a little bigger for those moments when more than one person is using the room. 1) Wish the lockers were a little bigger. read more

Center stress must sign in. No card means you pay regardless of membership. Basketball court always full. Staff not understand kids with issues whether it be austic or ocd or. Rules are rules. Can't look kid up. They should always leave one half court for anyone that just want to shoot hoop but I don't think that is the case. If there was a bond to improve .. I will go out there and vote. The Clay Madsen Rec Center is a pretty awesome place for the various activities for kids and adults. I've not known a rec center with so many great things to do! My kids have done the flashlight easter egg hunt, kinder gymnastics class and I've been doing the bootcamp class which is great class that kicks your butt enough that you'll see results as long as you give it your 100%! It doesn't get much better than paying $7/month (for a couple on a quarterly basis) for a facility that has an indoor pool, racquetball courts, basketball, gym, locker room, scheduled fitness classes and loads of other activities I never bother to join in on or find out about. Anyone who gives this place less than 5 stars probably doesn't appreciate anything in life and complains about every damn thing they come across. This place is amazing and deserves to be recognized for being highly accessible to those with little financial means. Every community should have a clay madsen, screw these private money grubbing gyms that make you write them a letter and send it via pigeon in order to cancel your membership. read more

I go to Clay Madsen because it is the closest gym to me with a pool. The pool itself is generally not too crowded, I have to share a lane ~1/3 of the time, but never with more than one person. The weight/cardio room is nice as well, no complaints. I've also used the indoor track, which is a bit of a miss because you have to be on the lookout for stray basketballs while walking/running. It would be nice if the track was elevated away from the court and other classes that are held there. The childcare room is adequate, but rather uninspired. Unless there is some kind of aerobic class going on though, it doesn't appear to be used that much, so maybe that's why its kind of blah. I've only brought my son there a few times, but he seemed to have an ok time. Overall, its a nice, clean place to workout. If I lived in Round Rock and didn't have to pay non-resident fees I would rate it 4/5, but for me it is a bit pricey for a no frills gym. It still smokes the Pflugerville rec center though, and not just because it has a pool. read more

Austin's strange lack of racquetball courts has led to me driving up to Clay Madsen Rec Center every couple weeks. I'm not a member there but my racquetball partner is. I only have to pay a $5 fee every time I want to use the gym, so I figure I come out ahead using it only 2-3 times per month. There are four courts and they are always in use. I like to work out here becasue I love my city of Round Rock and it is pretty close to my house. It is a bit annoying that even though I live in Round Rock I have to pay non-resident fees (we are in a MUD). I can dig it though. The fitness or cardio/weight room is cool. Alot of machines have been broken recently. There is always a machine open to use eveytime I get there. It may not always be the cardio machine that I want but I dont mind changing up cuz I does what I want ;) They have tons of activities but I really only use the Cardio /Weight Room. If you forget your towel it is .50 for a full size one. You can do a month to month membership and the skate park out back keeps the kids occupied for an hour or so. read more

This place is great! I love it enough to drive there from North Austin, about a 10-15 minutes drive for me. First off, this place is surprisingly inexpensive, especially with the corporate and government discounts. before you pay, ask them if you can qualify for any of the discounts. I pay less than $100 a year! Although, the price was not what initially attracted us to this place. We were looking for a pool that was indoors, heated and had several lanes. We looked at several private gyms (24 hr fitness, gold's gym etc.) but the ones with indoor heated pools had just a couple of lanes. The pool at CMRC is huge, indoor and heated. It even has an access ramp. It has all the things that we need: racquetball courts, outdoor tennis, weight and cardio equipment and free fitness classes. I have tried these facilities and loves each one. They also have indoor volleyball, pingpong, basketball, trails, skate park, activity rooms etc. i have not tried them but they look adequate. I am also trying out personal training which they offer for about $38 per session. Just be aware that is a rec center so it does not have the grandeur of an expensive private gym. It does not matter to me personally but it may bother you. You will have to contend with the fact that the locker rooms, while clean enough, do not have dimmed lights, fancy tiles and rotary swimsuit dryers. Also, as soon as you enter the center, you are hit with the the moisture-laden air from the pool. the music system is far from state-of-the-art and weight room can get busy during peak hours. The place can also sometimes be noisy with lots of kids. However, I love this place despite its shortcomings. You should give it a shot before you make your decision. read more

Don't get me wrong, I love this place but their policies for young kids needs to change. I had just signed up for a year membership, I've never complained here before but I checked out basketballs for my kids, 7 and 10, so they can shoot hoops in the gym. We walk in and there is a full court press game going on one side of the gym and on the other side kids of all ages shooting hoops and mine join in. A few minutes later a group of big guys get an adult game going and they start playing full-court!!! I complained and the young man who came to check it out came over to me and said he would not split the court because they had just started their game!!! Iexplained my kids were there first and that it wasn't right to get them bullied off the court. He said it was their policy!!! What?!!! I don't understand that. You have limited space, two courts and you can't split each court to accommodate all games and people and children of all ages??? Other kids didn't seem to mind shooting hoops each time the game went from one side to the other but my youngest is mildly autistic and 7 and doesn't understand about getting out of the way when they come charging down the court! My 10 year old got discouraged and just quite playing at all so we had to leave!!! The young man who worked there called their policy a "compromise to keep everyone happy" but I told him that I fail to see the compromise in it. Not happy about this policy and we had just signed up to join :( May I suggest on heavy days, have scheduled times for full court games and then scheduled times for half court use whether it be half court games on one side of the gym only and the half court shoot and play for kids and teens on the other half of the gym. This, I think, is a reasonable compromise. read more

I've been a member since 2001 and this gym gets 5 stars, here's my opinion. There is a vast variety of ways to workout and have fun. For example, you could hit the weights, then go for a swim and even pick up a racket ball game if you felt like it. CM really has a lot to offer for the price. However, the BIGGEST perk for me is the $15 cost for monthly membership, not only is that awesomely fair but I have never paid a late fee or been pressured to sign a contract. TODDLER TREEHOUSE is the MDO program for 3-4 year olds. My daughter has been going two months now and loves it. The rooms are clean and tidy and smell of disinfectant. The young teachers seem very engaged with the kids. DD comes home with "homework" activities to keep her occupied after class. There is a nice playground out back. They try to take the kids on a field trip to a park or the aquarium 1x a month. very reasonably priced. read more
