The story goes - Driving on the freeway last weekend and I heard a humming noise in the rear driver-side of our car. I encountered a similar noise on my other car a couple of years ago and had a wheel bearing replaced. I researched online when I got home, and most arrows pointed towards the wheel bearing as well. On Monday, 11/18/24, I looked online for the nearest shops in our area and found another shop and Clayton Valley Auto Service. I actually called the other shop first, but I didn't like the convo over the phone. I called CVAS right after and spoke to Keely. She was very helpful over the phone and was able to squeeze me in for the day after. I dropped off the car on Tuesday morning, 11/19/24. I spoke to Harold when I got there and told him what I suspected the issue was. Harold told me he would check it out and give me a call. A couple of hours later, Harold called me and told me they checked the wheel bearing and there was nothing wrong with it. He also explained that after further investigation, they found the rear tires are worn and suspected that it could be the issue. They switched both rear tires to the front and confirmed their suspicion. Harold recommended I change the tires and told me that he is not charging me for their diagnosis. I felt kind of bad about the situation as they spent time trying to figure out what was wrong with the car. I remembered my wife telling me before that the brakes were noisy, so I asked Harold if they could check the brakes and replace them instead. I followed up with Harold over the phone around 3 pm. He told me the brakes were still good and that replacing them now would be a waste of $$$. He told me I could pick up the car anytime before 5 pm. When my wife and I arrived at his shop, he provided additional info about the tires being worn out and adamantly recommended we replace the tires. He handed us the key to our car. I asked him if he could charge me at least an hour worth of shop time, and he refused to do so. I felt bad I was unable to give them any business, and while at the same time, they spent their own time investigating what was wrong with the car. I never expected to be shooed away and not pay anything. But at the same time, it was pretty cool to still find businesses such as Clayton Valley Auto Shop, who are honest and have integrity. Harold is very good at what he does, I had taken my vehicle to a tire and front end shop and was told I had a bad motor mount. They could not fix it so I called Clayton Valley auto, within a hour Harold called and said it was not a motor mount but a broken bolt near the engine. This place is great. I have gotten a couple of oil changes here and all is well. It was a fast turnaround too. I also had them do a checkup on my car before a long Christmas road trip one of the guys there suggested I get my battery changed based on the sound of the car ignition cranking too much. I kept it in the back of my mind. And a few days later I start up my car and my battery is dead. I called up Clayton Valley Auto Service and they immediately drove over to my house, jumped my car, drove over to their shop, and did a battery change real fast. The service here went above and beyond! Also a sidenote, I had some issues with my electronics in the car after the battery got replaced and they diagnosed the problem to be a bad fuse and replaced it. So even though the battery change caused a new problem, they took responsibility to figure it out and remedy it. I really like this group of mechanics, they do a great job and I appreciate them! At 7:30 in the morning I pulled into a Walnut Creek parking lot, steam coming from under my engine hood. Fluid was pouring out onto the ground. AAA took me to the folks at Clayton Valley Auto Service by 8:30. I had called ahead and they said, "Sure. Bring it in." I thought it was a coolant hose. It turned out to be the water pump. They replaced it, refilled the coolant, pressure tested the system and ran a test drive. Everything checked out and I was called at 1:45 saying the job was done and I could pick up the truck. Had a repair done on my 2007 Acura last week by Clayton Valley Auto Service. I have to say once again this place has gone above and beyond. They got us in immediately, the diagnosis was very timely and the repair was done the same day. The price was half of what the Acura dealership was quoting and they didn't try to up sell us on everything under the sun like the dealer always does. I had a feeling the serpentine belt was also bad but forgot to mention it, and they but a new one on anyway at just the price of the belt ( it had to come off any way with the alternator replacement). Not a good experience here. I made an appointment for 730am. I had to be at work at 7am, so I dropped my car off - used the envelope to provide my key and wrote detailed info on the envelope.Took an Uber to work. I called at 705am to verify they received my key and was told that they haven't gotten around to checking the mailbox yet. That they are busy moving cars out of the lot at the moment. Okay, I understand that. However, when I was off work (6 hours later) I called to check on the status of my car. I was informed that they haven't even looked at it yet and the mechanics were at lunch at the moment. I was not told that my car wouldn't be looked at until the afternoon - if that was the case I would have brought it in after work. I was not kept posted that there was a delay. So I told her I would just come pick up my car then, since they didn't have the time for it. Took an Uber to their shop. Mechanic didn't even come out to say sorry, that they can re-book for another time, that they would reimburse me for the Uber.. nothing. I was told they were backed up and given my keys. I totally understand being delayed .. however you should really contact your appointments and let them know that you won't be able to to get to their car. Give me the option to not even go through the motions of dropping it off and paying for Uber round trip when you are so busy you can't possibly get to my car that day. I had heard from many people that this was the shop to go to, but this was not the experience I was looking for. Such a shame. read more

Too bad that you can not give negative Star. Started out fine with these folks when I brought my mustang 3 months ago to trouble-shoot where a squeak was coming from under the hood and why the car pulled to the left when you applied the brakes. Owner said they could fix and did solve most of squeak but still happens occasionally and brakes no longer pull but now vibrate like hell when applying brake while headed down incline of any kind. I also had them install a Pertronics electronic ignition kit being told that was an easy install. Car now runs like a Vietnam era Huey Helicopter landing on hard rock terrain. Not good. Took car back to Clayton Valley and was told that there will be a 3 week wait until they can get my car back in. Thought that was a bit unreasonable but had no choice so waited. 2.5 weeks later---after waiting for 3 weeks to get back in to fix original work done----to find out they still had not fixed either the brake vibration or Huey effect. Pulled car out last Thursday promising myself never to use them again. Returned today for to collect original ignition rotor that I had been asking for and had to literally run from irate owner (Harold I believe) as he yelled profanities "get the fk out" Beware of what you are promised here. My 2005 Honda Element's Check Engine light had been on for awhile. Based on the positive reviews on Yelp and the fact that Clayton Valley Auto Service is just a short walk from home I decided to give them a try. I dropped the car off at 7:30am and received an estimate for the diagnosis before 10am. There was a problem with something called the VVT solenoid. The estimate seemed reasonable so I gave my approval. I did some research online and saw that a new one could cost as much as $500. Harold's estimate including parts and labor (and a new gas tank cap because my gas tank cap gasket was broken) was $430.72. The final cost was actually a few dollars less than the estimate. The car runs so much better. I highly recommend Clayton Valley Auto Service. read more

This is not good. Took my 2013 Ford Escape in on 12/01/2020 for leaking coolant. At first estimate included timing belt--good to do to avoid extra charge in future. Actually came out to $468.99 as it ended up not being the water pump, rather leaking from heater hose. Then on 12/10/2020 car having same problem of coolant leak. With only 96 additional miles on the repair. This time it was $246.78 of which labor was $153.85. I didn't mind paying for the parts. But not the labor. I went back a week or two later and spoke with Harold. He would not lower the fee so I told him I would not go back there. (I had no problem in the years I went there before Jeff passed away.) Anyway Harold said "do you expect my employees to work for nothing?" No I don't want him to pay his employees zero for their work, but I do expect him to stand behind their work. The way this was handled he would be nickel and diming me to death for the same/ongoing problem. BTW--Better Business Bureau is for the businesses, not for the consumer. read more
