Went to Cleburne today. The food was awesome and fresh! I've been a few times now and I love the salmon and the broccoli and cheese casserole. Oh and their German chocolate cake is TOP NOTCH. The service was quick and they have people constantly going around and pre-bussing (I'm a prebus snob so this was so nice). But there's no way you know that until you stand in line for 30-40 minutes. I have not been here in a couple of years . Everything I ordered was awful . Fried chicken very dry . Mashed potatoes cold Creamed spinach was inedible ! Gummy like glue . The crust of the Apple pie was wet & limp . The pie no longer held its shape . Seemed like it had been made a week ago & should have been tossed . Probably the best cafeteria style food in Houston? Certainly serves you great portions and the food is plentiful, you could probably share a dish if you'd like. I've been to Cleburne's whenever I needed a comfort food fix and I didn't want to do all that cooking and it certainly satisfies the craving. Service is always great, the dining room clean, and the food is fresh and never sits for long due to the steady and quickly moving lines. Because it's the holiday season I got the turkey and dressing with brown gravy. It also comes with cranberry sauce, but note that all other sides are a la carte which can quickly add up. I also got the yams and green bean casserole which I shared both with my friend. All of this was almost 30 dollars not including tip! The turkey was juicy and the gravy you could tell was from scratch. The dressing was flavorful and the cranberry sauce had actual cranberries in it. The green bean casserole, I feel like you can never go wrong with and wasn't too mushy or overcooked. The only item I'd probably never order again is the yams. They tasted fine if a bit on the bland side, but why were they so neon orange? The color was off putting. I tried my friend's chicken fried steak and it wasn't bad either. The restaurant itself and the presentation is a great environment and it's kept clean + service was great. Fancy luby's. LOL it is a typical cafeteria line style with all the southern food you can think of! It is expensive so be aware of how much you are adding by to your tray but everything i have tried was delicious. The line can get pretty long but they move pretty quick. I came to this restaurant with a group of retired educators for a Christmas luncheon. We were treated so unkindly. The manger was sharp and condescending to our host. Rushing us as we sat down, saying things like, you have sat for 15 minutes, we don't have seats just for sitting, you should be eating!" My experience yesterday at Cleburne Cafeteria was very disappointing. I came with the Gwen Branch reservation for 11am. Initially we went back to the private dining room to get our program started before getting our meals. During this time the manager came in and out several times. Eventually, she rudely informed us that we only had the room until 12:30pm and they were going to come in to start cleaning it up whether we were finished eating or not. A time limit on the room was not provided when the reservation was made prior to Thanksgiving. Overall, the treatment by the manager was unacceptable. An attempt was made by Ms Branch to have a discussion with her and she received a "sorry not sorry" response. The general consensus regarding the food was mediocre at best. I went there for lunch on Tuesday. I had a kale salad and chicken and dumplings. The kale salad was dressed with something that was impossible, sweet. It was not edible. I've never had chicken and dumplings before and that's why I wanted to try them here; it's a special on Tuesday. We waited in line for about 56 minutes and chatted with a number of wonderful characters, The ambiance was perfect. The policeman who mans the door has been doing this for 20 years. I have no complaints about the food. Here is my thing: It was our first time visiting this place, kind of like Lubby's stile, but my husband and I mentioned several times to the ladies serving the food that "this is our first time" and my husband asked for the kid's plate (due to bariatric restrictions) the lady said: We don't have it, when clearly you can see the menu. My husband asked again for the kids plate and the same lady started yelling and lecturing him, she even approached to the sign and pointed out and started yelling in Spanish: I told you that I can't give you that plate, it says right there 10 and under. And she kept pointing the sign out in front of everyone in the line. We got our food and sat down. It was so uncomfortable that we couldn't eat, we asked the young lady with the to-go containers cart for the manger (because she was around) and the young lady went to the register and told another server and a second server came to us saying: I'm not the manager, but what can I do to you? I didn't wanted to give her details and I had to ask for the manager, she told me that it was kind of difficult because the manager was in a meeting, when I saw the manager less than a minute ago around giving instructions. She left and somebody else came, she said that she was one of the managers, she heard us and what she did? She said: oh! Let me bring the General Manager here. I don't know, I believe the general manager came and we were expressing our feelings as what happened, she did apologize and mentioned that she will speak with all of the staff during the meeting, and while she was talking to us, we realized that a group of servers the got together near our table and started starting at us, talking in Spanish, whispering and talking between them about us probably talking with the manager, it became more embarrassing and disturbing the fact that we felt like in a gossiping whispering situation that we just left. Why is so hard to speak with a manager there? Why the staff had to be so harsh? Why the gossiping and whispering about a customer talking with a manager? This was our first time and it will be the only one. We are not returning. read more
