I grew up spending summers in South Haven and Clementine's was always a staple. It's been years since I've been back, but visited recently during a week's vacation. Is it a tourist trap? Yes! Trying to put our names in for a party of 13, we expected to be seated separately. Hostess at front desk gave attitude about having a big group despite us being very open to separate tables. We were given a 2.5 hour wait time which we planned to make work. After an hour we stopped by and confirmed it would still be 90 minutes until our table was ready. This worked well because it gave us time to get back to our house and feed multiple infants. 15 minutes later when at the house, we were called and told our tables were ready and we had 10 minutes to arrive. While rushing to get babies to restaurant, the restaurant was texting us saying we needed to hurry and they would not hold the tables much longer. We did eventually get sat down. The onion rings are unique and good. The burgers are very sub par/average at best. Pasta did not look very good. My wife ordered a steak medium and it arrived looking incredibly rare. We sent it back, and when it came back it looked just as rare if not rarer than the original. We began to think they were messing with us. We told them forget about the steak, shell take a burger. The waiter was very apologetic and the only nice experience we had at the restaurant. It was as if they knew they were one of the only restaurants in the city and felt like they held all the leverage. We will not be returning. Food was great! Really nice atmosphere. Only problem was the absolutely RUDE hostess. There was some confusion with them on who we were following to our table. She literally turned around at the table looking at our group and at the top of her lungs yelled "Do you want the table or not!" This is the first restaurant we came to once we arrived in town. Every article or place I researched mentioned that you had to eat at Clementine's when you are in South Haven. We had a little bit of a wait during lunch time which was not a problem since they are in a great central location. While we waited - we strolled some stores along the same sidewalk and the time went by fast. Once we were seated, we had a nice waitress serve our table. A couple of us shared an appetizer and ordered soup of the days as our main. One of the girls ordered a steak salad and it was HUGE. The food was pretty good from what I remember! It loved the historic feel of the building and decor. They're in a great spot for tourists who come into town and want to shop on that main street. read more

We have dined here several times in the past, but our recent trip was quite disappointing. The Parmesan cheese shaker had moldy cheese in it. The item it was used on was replaced, but it should have been taken off the bill. A salad that was to have mixed greens was almost all iceberg lettuce. It also was to have strawberries in it-- there were only two that were cut in half. Our waitress did everything to make things right, but the quality of food here has really declined. When vacationing in South Haven this is a must visit place. The food here is so good you won't want to leave. When we first sat down we noticed servers walking by frequently with these large stacks of onion rings. When we asked about it they told us they come in two sizes. So we ordered the large one and wow! Both huge and good. They come on a block with a rod up the center and they are stacked by size. Very yummy! The other entree items on the menu are really good. There is usually a long wait to get in here but everything changed with the COVID and many folks have stayed away from the restaurants in this cute area of South Haven. We were lucky enough to grab an open table in the shinny bar area which are widely spaced out and every other booth is closed off. Same thing in the dining area where they used to stack you in there like cattle. No outdoor dining on the sidewalk. We came for the Lake Perch fish fry and it was excellent. I like that I have a choice of a veggie or a baked potatoe instead of fries. I'll have to say it was better than Captain Lou's which was my favorite for a long time. Disappointing dining experience in South Haven. We used the love the onion rings there. We requested them "crispy" and not doughy as we had gotten doughy ones before. They "tried" to get them crispy, but didn't succeed. That was the first disappointment. My husband's high roller sandwich which is supposed to come with a lightly toasted bun, came with a burnt bun. I ordered curly fries with my meal and these had to be the worst curly fries I ever had. They were very "chewy". I alerted our waitress about them and she just said "sorry". She didn't offer to have them remade or offer me a different side item. She had a bad attitude which also made for an unpleasant dining experience. I would NOT recommend this restaurant to any of the tourists who visit the South Haven area for a day or weekend trip. read more

The most overrated place I have ever eaten. Perch, everyone said get the perch. It's over seasoned and way overpriced. Steak was meh, onion rings were over breaded and are drakes battered. So bland flavor to boot. Baked potato was the best thing I had. Black River tavern has waaaayyy better perch. The positive, the staff was great, the service was good and the waitress was very attentive and she is the reason I'm leaving 2 stars instead of 1. Was at Clementine's yesterday while in South Haven. I always love the decor and ambiance of this building. My dining companion told me that the red brick in the walls likely was fired in or near Chicago, while the yellow coordinating bricks were made in Grand Rapids Michigan. We were seated in the spacious entrance area. The staff were fast and efficient without appearing unduly stressed. Everyone was polite and respectful while being personable. I ordered the "Oh, My Darling!". I cannot remember, but my punctuation is spot on in regards to portion size, presentation, and flavor. I also had the wild rice which was paired very well with the seafood. I enjoyed my meal immensely and would have ordered dessert, but I'm diabetic. Darn! Try the onion rings. Excellent. Menu had a wide range of options. Obviously, has a long-time tradition for visitors. When we got there we noticed that they are, now, forcing groups to pay with a single bill. This is extremely strange and will influence our decision to patronize this establishment in the future. Solid place to eat grab dinner in the middle of South Haven. For an appetizer we ordered onion rings, that were cooked to perfection, and the buffalo wings that were basic, but delicious. I got the potato encrusted walleye, which was okay, but was a bit chewy and not as crispy as I expected. I finished it, but would have gotten something different if I had to do it all over again. My kids both got pasta which they highly enjoyed and wife got a huge salad, which she devoured. Service was great. Atmosphere is a bit outdated, but that adds to the charter of the place. We used to recommend this as a local stable. Reliable varied food. Apparently they are under new management, and is failing on many levels. Serious problems at the hostess station, might be better if staff didn't do shots at the bar while working. The food has been poorly timed. Our party of 5 arrived at approximately 11:40 on a Sunday morning and we were seated almost immediately. Our server greeted us promptly with a smile answering all of our questions. Two people in our party had the High Roller sandwich. It was very tasty and enjoyed by both. My husband opted for the steak salad with sweet onion dressing. The dressing was so good and the salad was so large, he requested a second dressing and without hesitation the server brought it to him. South Haven MI - What's the big deal w/Clementine's? Every time I've been by there's always a line outside of Clementine's? I don't get it the food wasn't anything spectacular, maybe just a lack of good restaurants in South Haven. My wife and I came to South Haven to go to get some blueberries @ DeGrandchamps Blueberry Farm 06/21/19 uhh maybe I should have checked to see if they were harvesting them first before driving out from Chicago). Anywho it wasn't a wasted trip we still went to Sherwins for their ginormous ice cream portions. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger w/cheddar cheese or Merkt's cheese spread. (Mehhh there are several dozen burger joints in Chicago w/better burgers. My wife got the corn beef w/thousand island dressing & Swiss cheese. This was a pretty tasty sandwich. Both came w/soup or side. We both chose the corn chowder which was very good. Nice restaurant, decent price point, decent service, but nothing overwhelming that would make me want to go back again. read more

A sandwich head shrimp crab meat Monterey Jack cheese on a French roll. Overall the sandwich seemed to both of us to be very bland and needed something to kick up the taste and/or flavor of the meal.
