I had a very disappointing experience during my recent visit. While getting my nails done, I received a brief phone call from my son, who is in college. It is rare that he calls me while I am out, so I answered. I was intentionally speaking in a low voice and keeping the conversation as discreet as possible. I am respectful of public spaces, and I would never intentionally disturb others. At that moment in the nail salon, there were three customers, including myself, and three employees. After a few minutes on the phone, the woman doing my nails told me I had to stop speaking because the customer next to me (who was sitting 2 chairs away) was "bothered". For context, the customer who complained was an older white woman, and I am Mexican. I was immediately taken aback and confused because: 1. I knew I was not speaking loudly, and 2. Moments earlier, that same customer had been openly and loudly having a conversation with the third customer who was next to her. Despite knowing I had done nothing wrong, I politely apologized and said I was not speaking loudly. The lady proceeded to roll her eyes and, with attitude, said, "This generation". Then she threatened to never come back to this salon because of this. What made this especially uncomfortable is that I was speaking Spanish on the phone with my son. The issue that the woman had was not because of the volume at which I was speaking, but rather the fact that I was speaking in Spanish. It felt discriminatory and rooted in bias. All of the staff members at this nail salon are Hispanic and speak Spanish themselves. Yet, instead of supporting me as a respectful customer, they told me to stop speaking entirely. To make matters worse, when one of the employees assisting the third customer spoke English, the customer appeared irritated by her accent and made faces whenever the employee spoke. Watching the staff lower their heads instead of addressing the disrespect was disheartening. No one should feel uncomfortable speaking their native language in a public setting. I hope management reflects on how situations like this are handled and works toward creating a more inclusive and respectful environment for everyone. read more

In the past, when a different woman was working at the desk, she understood what customers wanted and helped to foster a very relaxing experience. It was quiet and peaceful and felt more upscale. Which helps, considering a dazzle manicure and pedicure will set you back at or close to $100 if you pay in cash for the entire thing ( including tip), which is obviously a lot more than other places. Other nail salons do just as good of a job technically but when you pay extra you might expect an extra level of service. Tonight they sadly failed to deliver ( but still charged more than most other nearby salons and want cash). Sadly, the new woman working there ( tonight) doesn't have the understanding that the usual woman does and it downgraded the experience and made it not worth it. Instead of feeling pampered and like it was a splurge that was worth it, I left unhappy and stressed out and regretted paying for what I received. She turned off the music before every customer left and loudly insisted on payment before the service was completed instead of either giving the option ( like usual) to pay before or after the color. Personally, I prefer to tip at the end of the service and not interrupt my relaxation nor deal with cash transactions twice in less than an hour, which strikes me as unnecessary. I don't tip before it's done so I can determine how much to give and expect to be and should be dry ( especially with dazzle) enough to use my hands when it's time to leave. I repeatedly explained this. She insisted on taking the payment first which honestly ruined the relaxing and mindful experience I was having and she disregarded my repeated preference to only think about and deal with the money aspect of this one time instead of twice ( and not be interrupted from my relaxation). She told me it was to protect my nails and had an overall unpleasant demeanor and it was not pampering or upscale at all or consistent with the price of the service. Had she smiled and been pleasant and been more customer experience focused and had training in luxury experiences than this price would reflect the quality of the vibe and level of care. Instead, for the first time that I have been to Cleo, the staff was talking to each other in another language often and while working (rude and not relaxing or pampering )which is usually not the case here and the small things like turning off the music (and refusing to turn it back on when asked nicely and she agreed to ) was strange. She either needs to be replaced by someone with people skills or she needs to be trained more thoroughly since she lacks the level of customer experience reflective of the high prices that Cleo charges. Being treated better and able to leave feeling like the experience was curated for a much nicer feeling than salons that charge a third or half of the price is why people come to this place and spend extra. Plus the peace and quiet during the service. Sadly she will lose customers if she doesn't learn how to match expectations to the quality and price point here. If there are signs stating no cell phones the staff should also adhere to a quiet policy too. Someone chit chatting while working and in another language is rude, and again, it doesn't normally come with higher prices such as the ones here. It degrades the experience. I'm giving one star for the price and experience today. Normally it is a three to four depending on who does the nails because it's honestly been good at times and others didn't last the week ( when using dazzle too). read more

Manicures and pedicures are top notch at Cleo Spa & Salon. Located on Third Avenue and 21st Street, the spa is spacious with the front area devoted to nails and seating with a leather couch, water on tap and sunflowers. Along with nail care there are facials, waxing etc. There was a time when prices were comfortable with specials for manipedis that are sadly unheard of now. Even the loyalty points have been discontinued. Despite all this I have been a loyal customer for a few decades stemming from their first location. While it is pricey the quality and cleanliness are superb. I have seen a lot of the nail ladies over the years and liked Luisa and Aida both sadly gone now. Now I have Mica who is superb and I pray that she will stay as she has been here for quite a long time. Two clean restrooms are also here and massages are quite popular. Minjee and Irene are the staff here. Minjee always has a smile and is courteous and friendly. read more

I came here on Friday night to get a gel mani, regular pedi, and eyebrow wax. Maria was wonderful!!!! They finished 5 min after closing and I didn't feel rushed. Service was wonderful. I love the colors they have. They definitely have more colors than other salons in the area. I have the nicest sparkly pink accent nail that is so subtle - it's a color I've never seen before! The salon is so clean with every one following covid protocols. The gel mani and regular pedi were perfect and are lasting. I was super impressed with the eyebrow wax. It was just cleaning but it's SO clean. Zero baby hairs left!! Thanks Maria! Highly recommended! It was full when I went on Friday night so it looks like it's popular. First time going here because I received a gift card for a mani pedi. It was $61..... I think that's crazy for just a regular mani pedi. They were very clean with COVID... did temperature checks and made you fill out a form. And they sprayed and cleaned the chairs after each person got up. The person who did my nails was very nice but I went home and my nail chipped after two hours and you could see on a few of my nails where the second coat layered and didn't fully cover the nail (see picture). I went back the next morning for the chipped nail on my pointer finger and they fixed it no problem. Later that night, half my thumb chipped off. For a manicure as expensive as it was, I expect it to last at least a few days... my nails last longer than this when I paint them myself. read more

A plain mani is a whopping $25 and those long lasting polishes you'd like to try? I thought I found the ideal place was I ever wrong. Made an appointment 2 weeks ago for 3. I called earlier to see if I could come earlier she said my technician was busy no problem. I show up a few minutes before 3 they say mani pedi I said yes they said pick the color. My technician was just starting a pedicure for another person. The client sitting in her chair said I didn't have an appointment but I only waited for 5 minutes. I then got up walked out. A friend recommended I come here after she stopped one by night after grad school at 9:30pm and they were so kind to her and did a great manicure. I did a walk in on Saturday for a pedicure. The staff was super nice and told me it would just be a few minutes and to have a seat. The space is actually spotless. I personally will always pay more money in NYC for a clean nail salon because the amount of things I witnessed for $8 less is atrocious. All tools are put through autoclave, disposable files and buffers, plastic lining in the tubs, you get the vibe. This was also a pedicure that you felt like you were actually relaxing through. So many times you feel rushed and shoved so close to people but this was a true relax experience. They did an excellent job on the pedicure as well. Is this a quick and cheap corner nail salon? no but it is a beautiful, clean, and relaxing place to go which I think is worth the extra few dollars! Will 100% be returning! read more

After 12 years living in NYC this is by far the worst nail experience. I asked technician to select the SNS powder to match my toes and ..... pictures speak louder than words. When I voiced my concern about the nail color she told me I'm not done yet. Then blamed manager for choosing wrong color ( even if so technician is not blind and could see it's a wrong color). Process took 3 hrs just FYI. You can also see how dirty the nails are after appointment as I took a photo at front desk checkout. All this experience costs you $96 without tips. Although the salon is very nice it is VERY expensive and you do not get what you pay for. I asked for coffin shaped tips which Ive been getting for years. The nail technician just plainly didn't know what she was doing. Had to have someone come over and help. Shape and length all wrong different sizes. I spent $55 for an SNS dip manicure on Wednesday 2/12. Not even a week later, all the edges are peeling up and some are chipping. Not only that, but the nail technician spent 5 minutes per nail filing it all the way down after only two layers of dip, leaving it a completely different color than i thought it would be. Some of the cheaper places are quick and in and out but I felt like they would never let me leave, for the exact same manicure that barely lasted. Plus it was about 20 degrees outside and they left the door open. You can see in the attached image the lighter edges of the nails are lifting and everything is getting stuck it in. I live across the street from this salon. I have read the other reviews. I have never had a bad experience but I have never done gel, acrylics, etc..., here so I can't comment about that service. I find their prices high for nail services, for me, but I will occasionally indulge because their pedicures are really high-end (when you want that). I also understand that their address and size must command a lot of rent. Gramercy Park is one of the most expensive neighborhoods in NYC. However, I am writing about my experience with KAY yesterday. I have completely neglected myself during the pandemic and I felt my face was really unhealthy. I began researching medi-spas in Manhattan and Groupons and I noticed that CLEO seemed to have added skin care as a service. I walked in and saw that a 60 minute facial was $110. That was less than most places. I put off my decision and yesterday, the day before Mother's Day, I decided I would just do it. OMG. KAY is a hidden gem. She gave 110% of herself on that facial. My skin was transformed. Now, if you take care of yourself, you might not have the same result, but who cares? She lifted the old dead skin of of my face, massaged my neck, head, and shoulders, and kicked my butt (in a nice way). She was so good, that I asked for a back facial. I argued about the price ($75), but I went for it. OMG. She scrubbed and extracted any crap from my back while massaging my arms and shoulders. When you spend more money that you want to, but you feel it was worth every penney, it is not a typical experience (in Manhattan). Everything here is so expensive and you will often be disappointed by the result. I am very happy to report that I left that salon very happy and feeling that I got a lot of value for my money. After being turned away from two salons with long waits during the lunch rush hour I finally found Spa Cleo. Pretty and clean with friendly staff, I was relieved at their availability though a bit dubious of the pricing. Though I'm not used to paying more than $8 for my regular nail attentions, Cleo was twice the price. In either case, I was out of options so I thought perhaps I get some extra massage or scrubbing. No such luck, though I did get good results. Their methods are a bit different as well, using new manicure supply packs each time, foaming hand sanitizer and plastic hand lotion gloves. All of this would rank a 3 star rating but throw in the great hours (open till midnight) and incredible polish and magazine selection and yes, I'm a fan -- if my woohoo salons are unavailable. read more

Oh, heck no. This place has some serious balls charging $56 for a regular manicure and regular pedicure. The face I made when I was handed my receipt must have been picture worthy. So, I came here because a friend of mine suggested it, not because it was a great place but because it was in the vicinity of where we were. I walked in to meet her a little late and she was in the pedicure chair and not one employee said hello when I walked in, asked what I came in for, not a word. It was awkward, I almost thought about asking whether I should leave or if I came at a bad time. Finally someone realized I was the second person meeting my friend and they told me to pick a color. They had a decent selection of colors, but they didn't ask whether I wanted a gel or regular manicure, they actually didn't ask me what I wanted at all. Anyways, I sat in a pedicure chair and they lined the tub with plastic wrap, the best thing the place did all day and the only good thing the salon did. My pedicure was fine, to be honest I was so busy chatting with my friend that I didn't even pay attention to what they were doing so I can't recall if they did anything great or anything bad but it wasn't memorable. I was told not to get a gel because it tends to chip days later but I had a lot of events coming up that week and really needed something that stayed on longer than a regular manicure. I sat down and asked for their gel colors. They had an Essie Brand, OPI Brand and a Shellac brand. I was torn between two colors so I asked my manicurist which brand was better and she didn't know so she asked a woman who I assumed to be the owner or manager and she didn't know either. Huh? You run a nail salon and you aren't able to talk to your customers about your products, interesting. Next I asked how much the gel manicure was going to be, wait for it. Take a seat actually before continuing to read. $45. $45 dollars for a freaking gel manicure that according to the word on the street, chips in days. Get REAL. I literally laughed out loud. Then proceeded to say no way I'll stick with the regular manicure. The woman doing my nails was straight up rude. I give people the benefit of the doubt, but this lady was nothing but mean and rude and rushed through my manicure making it incredibly unenjoyable. I paid before getting polish (the norm) and when I got my copy to sign I put $0 for the tip and rewrote the cost of the manicure pedicure at the total. I've never paid a tip via credit card at a nail salon and usually it's frowned upon or not allowed. Clearly I was going to tip in cash like I also do and have always done. This woman. This woman doing my nails took my signed copy and literally said to me, "So you didn't leave a tip you going to tip me in cash then?" ARE YOU SERIOUS? Am I being dramatic because I don't think I am. Could you imagine a server asking you how you plan on leaving your tip after seeing your signed credit card receipt? Never. Don't people PREFER cash tips? Good heavens. Anyways, once she proceeded with painting my nails, it was done in maybe 45 seconds flat. Incredibly incredibly rushed job, poor job as there were several bubbles on the surface of the nails while drying them. Would not recommend this place to people because of their cost and quality of their service. Don't ask customers how they plan to tip. It's distasteful. read more

I came here recently and have been meaning to review. The first issue was that there was no hot water for the pedicure, so they dumped buckets of cold water into the pedicure station. They didn't tell me to after I sat and picked my color and was ready for the pedicure, something I would like to have known right away.
