Unfortunately I got Kumari (the owner) who just sucks are doing nails. You will know her by the bright lipstick she wears. Her filing skills sucked. She literally spend 1 second on each nails. I had to tell her about 10 times that the gel was not taken of correctly (they just dumped my fingers in acetone for 20 minutes). The nail polish left my nails with air bubbles everywhere. I usually go to one place in Alphabet City but I really needed a pedicure before Friday and my usual place was booked for today. I got on Yelp and looked for somewhere with higher than 4 stars and lots of recent reviews. I finally found NIRVANA but somehow landed at Kumari. I called and made an appointment about 10 mins away from the place and they said I wouldn't have to wait. Perfect. I got there and was immediately having regrets. The atmosphere is REALLY bad. No music and small place. The constant chattering between the staff and other customers is really annoying. I wanted to relax not get anxiety and stress...The door was left open and no AC was on and it was already almost 90 degrees outside! It smelled bad in there like Body Odor and feet. The FIRST tech (yes more than one...) did a nice massage on my feet and scrub. The only problem is that she pushed my cuticles back really hard until I told her she doesn't have to do it that hard. The lady was sweet and took her time - I'm glad I wasn't being rushed - YET. A girl came in to buy a gift certificate and so I guess the owner started speaking loudly at my technician telling her to do the transaction. So like the reviews said - they switch up your technician at least once in your visit... The manager/lender RUSHED through my pedicure! I wanted my nails cut a little more and she did it so fast and kept looking at the other tech and girl telling them how to do the transaction, that she cut my big toenail in an awkward shape so it was no longer square/round, just ratchet looking (the right foot's big toe is rounded and slanted!) I also wanted the sides of my big toenails cut because they were hurting and they did it but not properly. She didn't use oil to soften up the sides and BARELY cut any. She then said it's good and there isn't anything there after I kept touching and looking at them. They also don't tell you that it's an extra charge for credit card payment until AFTER your service is done... EPIC FAIL. I'm going to stick with my usual place. This is why I don't branch out and stay loyal to my places! Also that whole "you get what you pay for is BS cus my usual place is cheap too and they do a better job. ALSO she asked me how much is the tip and I said I'd tip on the receipt and she said no now. So I tipped $1 to make a point and she asked me 4 times "what" since she couldn't believe it was so low. While walking downtown from Midtown East on a hunt for a nail salon that doesn't charge an arm and a leg for a pedicure, I decided to give this place a try after seeing their mani/pedi special for $20. However, since I already had gel UV done a couple weeks earlier on my nails, I only got the pedicure. Upon entering, I told one of the ladies I wanted a pedicure and proceeded to choose my colour. (Bright Red). The manicurist prepared my foot soak and sat me down to cut my nails, shape them, file them, buffed them before applying the polish. I don't think she waited more than a couple minutes between the base, colour, 2nd colour, and finishing coat.. but somehow it all worked out because 2 days later, the polish still looked great. It even comes with a small massage (foot and shoulders but the shoulders only lasted a couple seconds). After drying my Nails on the dryer, she applied some sort of coat on top and wrapped my foot in plastic wrap... which I found very good. I don't know what the purpose of that was.. maybe to make the colour last longer? Must say.. I am pretty impressed with their work but not the ideal place if you care about ambiance. For $15, it wasn't bad but next time, I'll probably opt for the mani/pedi since it's only $20.. waiting to see how long the polish last (Opi, though they did have Essie) before deciding whether it's worth it to return. read more

So I walked in here thinking it was a recommendation from a friend (it wasn't). Full disclaimer that the mani turned out okay and I'm not looking to go back/have it fixed, but felt compelled to write something to warn others. I knocked two stars off because of the cuticle work/the sanitary conditions. This was really shocking because the tools had not been cleaned, they weren't sanitary, and the technician was throwing trash in the tool bin. This to me was the most egregious offense which alone would stop me from coming back. During the process my technician made me bleed from trimming back my cuticles and also left some hanging before moving on. I had to go home and trim them myself, which is not something that I expect to do after paying for a manicure. WOW. I have not given a one star in a long time..if ever. I thought I wrote a Yelp review already when Kumari opened a year ago. The owner (don't know her name) is very sweet- friendly, great service, they were giving away nail lotion at their opening and custom buff/files. But I stopped by today, sans appointment, a Friday around 6:30 and had probably the worst experience...ever. What a waste of $23, and yes I gave a low $3 tip but honestly the girl who did my mani and pedi had a SERIOUS attitude problem (she actually COMPLAINED that I paid with my credit card...a) I didn't have enough cash, and b) you accept cards so I'll pay how I want, and c) I still give you tip in cash, d) I still gave you tip, period. I had to ask her a thousand times be sure to cut the ingrows-corner of my nails. She was extremely rushed, and I had to even ASK her not to be so rough..seriously, I had to ASK her because I'm the nicest person ever who never complains. You just don't expect to be a customer and get shit experience for no reason. Avoid this girl at all costs- curly hair, nose ring.. I went to this place in need of some serious mani/pedi maintenance along with an eyebrow wax. The regular mani/pedi is $21. I decided to do the regular pedi ($15) and the OPI gel mani ($23). I figured this would be a "get what you pay for" experience because it was so cheap but I WAS VERY WRONG. They came out amazing! And the staff was so friendly, thorough and attentive. This place is new and very clean. What is left is the eyebrow wax. The technician said I may benefit more from an eyebrow threading instead of waxing ($5 they are the same price so she wasn't trying to up sell me). I'm not going to say it wasn't painful but I will say it is entirely worth it. My eyebrows haven't looked this good in seriously a year! Her recommendation was spot on and I couldn't be happier. The girl who started my pedi was slow and a way too rough in pushing back cuticles. I didn't realize she cut every toe until she sprayed the alcohol and all ten toes burned. I noticed she had issues with the polish I chose (gunky, running out). But instead of getting a fresh new bottle she tried to paint my nails with it. After complaining did they FINALLY get a new bottle. Because it took so long for my pedi, I did not stay for a mani. When I was going to pay they hit me with a surprise $1 fee for paying with a card. I finally stopped by the salon today and the lady had the nerve to insinuate that it was my fault that my nails are chipping and that she will fix them for 15$! So I would be paying 47$ for a job she should have done correctly in the first place for 25 and a 7 dollar tip$?!?! I walked out immediately n told myself that I'm never coming bk here again. I've given them too many chances to get my mani right- you know how to paint nails or you don't- it's really just that simple. Ok, so I've been to a lot of salons, some of which weren't so good. But this one is an absolute all-time low. I went there for a simple mani on my break between classes. I don't even want to get into describing how terrible was the manicure itself, and the nail polish looked like a 5-year old painted it. It was really really BAD. However, that wasn't even the worst part. When spending $10 on a mani I don't expect top notch service, I usually couldn't care less as long as i walk out with decent looking nails. But this one was so rude, it was offensive ! After I pointed out that there was some of the old nail polish left and she can't just put nail polish over that (and oh yes, she was about to), she said something along the lines that she will not spend more than 15 min on me, and if my nails are so "bad", its not her problem. She said "you come next time we fix the rest". How is that even supposed to work? I asked her if she was rushing me out, she said no, but she can't spend more than 15-20 min on a manicure, they are too busy for that. Now that was just confusing to me, as there were 4 workers in the salon, and out of customers it was me and another lady getting a pedicure. I mean, SERIOUSLY? 15 min? All the while she wasn't even hiding her irritation, yelling in whatever her language is to her friends. UNBELIEVABLY bad place. I have been going to this place faithfully for months. Nirmala is my favorite I go to her for everything. Normally I'm skeptical about getting anything except my nails and toes done at places like this but she is so phenomenal. She gives the best Brazilian waxes and an AWESOME facial for only $60 or so ! ( I can't say it's perfect but it's really cheap so I didn't mind) I got mani pedi today and got cut . When she tried to clean my toe nails she poked my skin underneath of nail several times and i got Hurt . I asked her if she has any anti biotic ointment I got some anti septic but even still if I touch my toe it hurts and swollen. After I got mani also and I got so frustrated. another woman did my mani and she asked me is it okay to cut my nails. I said "sure" and she started cut it really short . Really short means skin underneath was exposed . I don't know if she thought I said cut them "short" I felt so tired of miscommunications and wounds I just wanted to leave. My toe is still hurts and my nails feel so weird bc it's seriously too short . I saw other reviews and I can see this is not the first time they cut skin . The staff was friendly enough. My issue was with my manicure-- my manicurist was clearly in a rush and didn't take any time to trim my cuticles or buff my nails much. She filed them but left bits I could see hanging off-- when unasked her to remove them she said she couldn't see what I was talking about. Also she didn't fully remove my existing orange polish before she started on the periwinkle color. Which was my next issue-- I made the mistake of picking an Essie color that I should have guessed would need multiple coats. She did two thin coats and it was streaky at best.
