Stu is a fabulous mechanic who will actually "fix" problems on older cars instead of replacing everything. I have a 2003 Ford Explorer Sport. The lock on the tailgate door broke and the door would not open. Two other shops on the south end of Whidbey Island would not even attempt the job. Being 21 years old the replacement lock was not available anywhere. Stu actually manufactured a replacement lock in his shop and my vehicle was fixed the next day at a fair and reasonable cost. Stu replaced a fuel pump, charged me more than $600, broke the gas gauge and didn't replce the fuel filters. Thought I had a full tank of gas, but he only put back about 3 gallons so ran out of gas, costing me another tow and $300+ at Simmons. He talks to women like they don't have a brain in their head he has the foulest mouth I've ever heard. nNo wonder he works alone. read more

I had been dreading my annual drive down to Southern California to visit family for Christmas. I have a 1999 Suburban that I still have cling to for nostalgic reasons. The suburban has had many problems in the past and had a cracked dashboard which GMC in Everett refused to fix because they no longer have the part in stock and that they don't install 3rd party products. I checked all over then finally went to Stu, who said he would install the dash. He did a great job and the car stopped rattling when I would drive because of the broken dash. I decided to have him work on the car to get it ready for the ride down to SoCal. He did have the car for two weeks and during that time I would call and have him fix small things like door handles and cosmetic things on the vehicle in addition to rebuilding the distributor cap. I didn't need the vehicle during that time so it was not a big deal to me. After receiving the vehicle back and driving to So Cal I was surprised that the vehicle drove so well. I returned today from the 2000 mile journey (the return trip in constant rain and snow). The vehicle with over 180,000 miles ran great and I will be going to Stu on a regular basis. I have also gone to Simmons and have received great service. I think it is great that there are so many great options in Clinton. Especially when I can walk home from either place when I drop the car off. read more

I was visiting a friend on the island and my Suburu broke down. The auto shops were very busy due to a slick and snowy Christmas. It could have been a difficult time as it was a Friday afternoon and I wanted to be headed back to Oregon Sunday am. With the help of my friend, I called Clinton's and Stu came to my rescue. He worked on a Saturday, drove to another town to get a new radiator and my car was repaired mid day. Car ran great, very reasonable charge and a wonderful, sympathetic Stu who saved the day. Had Stuart replace a timing belt, water pump, intake manifold gasket and radiator in my 1993 Honda Prelude. He had my car in his shop for 2 MONTHS. I get it back with a broken sensor near the intake manifold and within 3 weeks the valve cover was leaking and burning oil so bad I took the car back to the shop and left it for 2 days. (The valve cover has to come off to service the timing belt.) When I went to go get the car, Stu said he couldn't find "any major issues" and then he stated "it sounds like it's running great, I'd say don't baby it." Not even 3 months later my engine destroyed itself. Wasted $$$. I filed a BBB complaint in February 2018 which was unanswered by Clinton Automotive. I then sent a detailed demand letter on March 3, 2018 via certified mail and that was returned to me, marked "refused" on March 8. I am now resorting to Small Claims Court. read more

Stew at Clinton Automotive has maintained my cars for over a dozen years and I have always been satisfied with the service. Prices are reasonable, certainly less or in line with other mechanics on the island. Glad he's so close and so good. read more

Stew did a horrible job working on my vintage 1970 Ford pick up, costing me well over a grand to solve an electrical problem that is now WORSE than it was before. I've had to have the truck towed back to Clinton Automotive FOUR times after it simply stopped dead or would not start after he had supposedly "fixed" it. Every time, he claims it's fixed, bills me even to correct his past mistakes, and it didn't go five miles this last time before it died again. Avoid this place. Any place that charges you to fix the mistakes they shouldn't have made to begin with should not be in business. I read more
