I hired this company for a closet upgrade, but the results were disappointing. During the removal of the old closet, they damaged the drywall and proceeded to install the new system without addressing the damage. I had to bring in another professional to repair what they left behind. The workmanship did not justify the cost, and they failed to disclose that they do not take responsibility for wall damages caused during removal. I cannot recommend this company based on my experience. Update: I have to change my rating of this company because once I posted this review, the company got in touch, acknowledged the communication gaps, and refunded my repair expenses. I'm so bummed. So so bummed. If I could do this all over... I'd never contact this garbage company. Savana may have been great but wow her former colleagues failed her in representation. 1. If there's an issue on installation.. THEY WILL cover it with putty and WILL attempt to hide it. 2. They will NOT care about the cleanliness of their own work. 3. They will NOT troubleshoot first before destroying things. 4. They WILL destroy your carpet tacking. As a woman, I'm so mad and so disappointed. I emailed Jonathan to have my bottom shelf fixed under warranty and he sent the most disrespectful employee he had. This man destroyed my white carpet and laughed when i immediately started cleaning.. he said he wasn't a big deal. Nah man. It really is. After I asked him to lay a blanket down, he started drilling holes in my toe kick. He then turned around and told me "i can't remove it. You messed up putting the carpet up against it." I asked him to stop right there... and he used a pry bar and attempted to pry my brand new carpet up off the tack strip... i yelled at him to stop and asked him to leave (1st attempt).. he did not leave. He got on his phone and continued to pry at the tack strip. I told him to stop and asked him to leave. He ignored me again and put his hand up to wave me off. Told me he's going to take care of it and started yanking at the toe kick that now had a screw in it. Being a single female in my house... I immediately felt unsafe. I've asked this man twice now to leave my house and he's refusing. Now ignoring me and damaging my property. I panic, grab his tools and place them outside on my porch and tell him to get the **** out of my house and he hesitates. Really? I yell at him one more time to get out of my house and he finally looks at me, rolls his eyes, and slowly walks out to his van... that's completely blocking my driveway. Upon returning back to my closet, I see the carpet tacking has been destroyed and the carpet is now pulled back 1/4"+ from its original place.. I have a hole in my toe kick... silicone putty smeared everywhere... and a broken shelf. I paid $6k for this stupid closet and it's turned out to be a huge regret. To start destroying things before troubleshooting or stopping to ask questions..... to have the audacity to blame the customer when your company coordinated this entire project. Wild. Hi got two closets installed this week from closets by design one of the drawers is really hard to open and close the other one has a gap at the top. It doesn't fit well. I wish my Family and I would have looked at the reviews to this Business on Yelp Before Ordering . The Salesperson had given us a estimate on closets that were supposed to have Closet Doors . When the Istallers installed the Closets they stated that the Instalation of the Closet Doors were not on the work order . When I spoke with closets by Design they wanted to Jack up the price to another 800 dollars on top of what I paid for The Closets already to install doors . I asked them about a return policy and they stated that they could take them back, however we would loose our Money deposited $650 . So we will be attempting to speak with our sales person to see if anything can be done from here. Update (as of December 2025): After my initial review, the company reached out promptly to discuss my concerns, and their customer service completely turned this around--now I'm thrilled with the result! Originally, I was very disappointed. I paid $2,600 (after a 40% discount) for a closet system that felt overly basic--mostly particle board with simple rods. The shelves weren't level, it looked cheap and poorly assembled, and the installers left my walls pitted and damaged after removing the old shelving, without giving me a chance to repair them first. For something meant to be a permanent fixture in my home, it just didn't feel worth the price, and I regretted not doing it myself. But then Mike, the manager, personally called to understand why I was so unhappy. He sincerely apologized and quickly came up with a solution. He sent the installation team back out with additional backing pieces, and the difference is night and day--the closet now looks sturdy, polished, and truly worth every dollar. This level of responsiveness and commitment to making things right is rare. They're a local company that's professional, prompt, and genuinely cares about their customers. My husband and I read the reviews on Yelp AFTER we signed the contract. I have to admit we were super nervous. Everything went extremely well from the initial consultation with Frank to installation. It was pointed out to us by the install team and the manager was on the phone apologizing and letting us know a new one would be arriving in the morning. At 9:30 am exactly the next day it arrived. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The initial consultation went well they are good at getting you started but after you pay a down payment and decide on materials everything from that point on was a nightmare.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] My husband and I have many years of experience of remodeling homes and wanted to have someone else take on this project for convenience, but it was anything but convenient. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The designer was knowledgeable but when she had to reconfigure a plan after it was not right for our space she was not only not available she would not return phone calls.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] she was often out of town or in a meeting and did not communicate this directly but had to be contacted by a receptionist and still would not call back so many excuses from the top of this company to the bottom. [[HIGHLIGHT]]After loosing track of the numerous excuses she had one phone call after months of waiting and she copped an attitude that she was doing me a favor since she was once again out of town and told us she didn't want to come back and remeasure since we had some of the materials brought to our project and the installers were already sent once and that is was our fault that they didn't finish the project.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The fact is that we had spent thousands of dollars to enlarge a closet to accommodate a larger cabinet configuration and the installation cabinets would have left a five inch gap between the cabinet and the wall which would have made the entire remodel unnecessary and if the designer Kay would have come back out and remeasured it would have saved time and waist of materials. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Each time I called to find out what was going on no one would call back[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] . the main guy at the Vista office Johnny would get very aggressive and threaten to keep out 2/3rds of the cost and not complete our project . Johnny was one of the most Un professional's and dosen't have the skills to deal with even the simplest issues. Never one did Kate or Johnny ever ask "how can we make this right" instead they blamed the customer and made us the problem. When Kate came out she told us that this project would take a few weeks after we decided on design and materials and after we finished out tear out of the old closet. This was started in July 2024 we decided on design and materials in Aug.2024 we finished out part of the construction Oct. 2024 at this point this company had thousands of dollars our money and we had a mess. our materials sat on the floor of my home office for the next four months and I could not use the room all my personal belongings were in boxes in the garage. After more phone calls and threats from them they finally agreed to remeasure and remake doors that were wrong and fill in the gap but wanted $800.00 more dollars to correct their mistake. She created a plan that met my requirements for a pantry.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] However at installation pull out drawers could not be fully opened, hanging brooms and mop would be knocked off holder when drawers were opened. A pop laced disc player and security panel meant a 16 deep shelve could not be installed. I was ready to cancel but I was told by CBD I would lose my 50% deposit. Court cases clearly have shown, If a contractor cannot install a pantry as it was drawn up by their staff, I would be entitled to a refund of my deposit, based on a breach of contract. Rather than go into protracted litigation, I had them redesign and install. Still design issues surfaced and I agreed to modifications to make the pantry remodel. Armando was on time, recognized issues and discussed the problem and solutions. A final closure to one of my renovation projects. If you use the Company my recommendation is get Armando as your installer. A one dimensional drawing does not expose the draw pull issues. read more

He agreed with my assessment and offered to tear the whole thing down and replace at no cost. I did not want to go down that road again. He offered a solution that addressed the gaps at the bottom of the drawers where it met the floor. We agreed to proceed with that fix. Today the correction was installed and it looks much better. We hired Closets By Design to complete two projects for us: a child's bedroom closet and a built-in office. They scheduled the project for Oct 3-4. While they completed the child's closet with no issues, the built-in office was a disaster from design to completion. It took them almost 3 months to complete a simple build out that one has to imagine they have done thousands of times. The designer was hopeless - the design was flawed (she mismeasured) and it was misinterpreted so they installers did not being the entire section that I had paid for in full. The structure was mismeasured by the designer and covered part of a door. The installers, noticing the error, still installed it. The PM was more concerned with whether or not we had paid in full for the entire structure rather than focus on their carelessness. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It took them weeks to follow up.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Then, they mismeasured again causing another delay in the project. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Communication was poor.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] There is no oversight and no accountability. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I never heard again from the designer.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The company should have offered a discount for failing to complete the project in a reasonable timeframe. It was late December by the time they had finally finished - Dec 23. I had to point out that one of the pieces did not line up well because it had to be added after the fact. They made the change but why didn't they notice this? This was a disappointing experience. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I still haven't been contacted by anyone in management to explain the issues and no "an apology" is not sufficient given how much we paid.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] And we paid the full amount on time. We explained what we wanted to the designer. The issues were all theirs. I don't understand how this company has an A+ rating. The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing because the company is compartmentalized. They did not deliver what was promised or sold to us. install in December and it's almost March and it's still not right. When the truck arrives the materials are thrown in back of truck and I was left to clean the mess up every time they came into my house. We had Lisa as our designer. She's great to work with, patient, detailed, and follows up quickly. We mentioned we don't mind waiting for the best installer, and she said she will request their best. At our door instead shows up another installer, and the installation company (not same as Closet by Design) confirmed they were short-staffed and had to bring this installer. I believe they contract out the installation, because the installation company called themselves (twice) "Closet World", but then corrected and said "Oh, I mean Closet by Design". The work was done poorly, with gaps and unevenness (see images). The installer said that our walls are not flat, but most walls are not flat. There have been many installers that can adjust to fit the needs of the closet. That's why we request a custom install. We had to point out issues and then the installer fixed it only if we pointed out the issue. There are still leveling problems and we're still working with the installation company to schedule a third (and hopefully last) visit. They agreed to send someone else, which may or may not be better. We're still waiting. The materials are strong, but damaged in some areas (see images). Again, we had to point out to installer and he said he can use touch up paint. We would hope he would have caught these obvious errors earlier. I highly recommend Lisa as your designer, but won't recommend the installation. read more

STAY AWAY!!! Not even one year after getting two adult walk-in closets done, two of the clothing racks fell off one of the closets we paid THOUSANDS of dollars for. Mind you, these are closets that two very organized adults use, not young kiddos who might be less cautious. For a week and a half now I have had the clothes that hang on those two clothing racks piled up on the floor. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I called again, this time asking to speak with the General Manager and apparently "whoever answers the phone is who answers the phone" in the San Diego office because there was not a way for me to leave the GM Mike a direct message.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Like I said in my first review, STAY AWAY! I had high expectations after our initial design consultation with our Closet By Design representative. Tiffany was very kind and professional. We had agreed on a his and her design, matching doors and interior design for our master and guest bedroom. It's all drawn out and listed on paper as so, so pretty straight forward. Seemed way too easy! It was an investment and one we were excited about. Our master bedroom closet has been doorless for so long and we we're so excited for this to come to life, we agreed it was worth every Penny! (A big decision for us) In short summary; upon Install arrival I learned there was a miscommunication in regards to the order placed by sales, and they only had one set of doors although we were expecting two. I asked for them to look into this but received no follow up from the install team or my sales rep. At no point did the installers talk to me, try to get my attention or acknowledge that we would only have one set of doors per the contract. Obviously if this was the case, I would have told them to install on the closet without any existing doors. Without my approval, they proceeded to remove our existing closet doors and replaced it them with our newly purchased Ones. No common sense! The master bedroom (as seen in photos) remains doorless which was the only reason for us to bring in closet by design to begin with. I learned all of this upon final inspection, and NO ownership was taken by anyone. We have no choice but to buy another set of doors and we are now 2k over budget out of pocket (NOT exactly cheap!) They were also missing parts so we need to create more time for them to come back next week. For nearly 6k, you would expect a little more quality the first time around. I would have shopped around if I had known. There was shifting of blame which was inevitably placed back on me for my misunderstanding despite all paperwork with my signature approving design plans. THAT was most frustrating in this. I felt pretty disregarded by the sales team, and felt that there was a lack of ownership in general. I was told in a text "sorry this process wasn't as seamless as you hoped." There was no regard to the fact that we are now as extra 2k more out of pocket due to their mistake. I sincerely don't normally leave poor reviews, I understand mistakes happen. I do feel this feedback is important to share though. Guillermo (Willie), our installer, was very competent. The only thing missing was that he left the piles of debris on the floor, rather than picking it up. Not a huge deal. Just different than we expected for the price we are paying - figured every bit of cleanup would be included. We are very upset with Closets by Design. We got an ad through the mail and decided to check it out. After calling for an appointment, someone came out within a few days to give us a quote. We were told that their product was made in the USA and "the best quality". Their brochure displayed beautiful cabinetry, closets and office space. That's where things went downhill. We waited over 2 months to get our product. Then it took another 2 weeks to set up an installation day. They changed the date on us twice. When the installers came out, they had all the wood pieces stacked against each other in the van with no protection cover or box. Most of the pieces were cheap looking and had scratches on them and the paint was chipping off. The product did not look ANYTHING like what we ordered and the craftsmanship was terrible. There were gaps in between the pieces and discoloration around the bookcase. They scratched our walls and discolored the trim on the wall edges. When I pointed out there were issues, the installers went around with a piece of white chalk, "filling in" all the problem areas and using a razor to "smooth it out". But it didn't help...IT MADE IT WORSE! We complained immediately after the product was installed. We were told that the manager would be calling us in 1-2 days. NO CALL after 3 days. We then called the main office and were re-routed 3 times to the "supervisor" who told us someone would call to fix the situation. After another 3 days- no response. We spoke with the salesman after a week and he said that the manager would call us. NO CALL after another 4 days!! They must have a "imaginary manager" in San Diego. We have a terrible looking product in our house which haunts us every day we walk by it. This is a unprofessional, crappy closet design company. YOU WILL REGRET WORKING WITH THEM. If you like cheap, poor quality products...sure give them a call. read more

Product quality is very good, but installation was full of problems (it took three days because shelves were wrong, had to be re-done). After getting things fixed, several shelves are still too loose and tend to fall down. Not sure I would use them again. read more

Willie, the installer, was very professional, friendly and easy to communicate with. There were 2 problems with the way the design was submitted and the way the parts were made that prevented Willie from completing the project. But along with Harry at the office we were able to come up with a suitable solution. Fortunately I'm not in a huge hurry to get these systems completed, so the delay was fine. I don't think the designer did a very good job of informing me the of the quality of the drawer guides. I was sorry to see they're of such poor quality, while everything else in my house is on self closing guides with a much stronger tracks. Other than that I'm happy to have my closet systems at least partially in place! read more

I have to admit, Closets by Design was not my first call and that's only because I had heard of their 2 competitors more. Thank God the competitors were poor at customer service and follow through... that lead me to Closets by Design. I called, setup an appointment fairly quickly and had the pleasure of working with Ginny. She came in, measured, offered advice and design ideas and worked to get me the best price. Our first project in our new home was an empty pantry. It was awkward in size, but basically a blank canvas. There was nothing in there and we needed shelving badly. Because it was such an awkward space I decided to not do anything too fancy (no pull-outs or drawers) and the design Ginny created has now been installed and works GREAT for our family. I highly recommend Closets by Design and already have to several friends with upcoming projects. From the appointment setting to the install they were a well-oiled machine. Please stay away from these jokers. I ordered two closets from them. The installers came 3 hours late to the initial install. They installed one closet and then informed us it was too late to install the second closet. The installer told us both designs were flawed. The first closet he was able to move some components around and make it work . The way the designer laid out the other closest made it was inaccessible with the current closet doors. I had to spend 1000 on new closet doors. I called and emailed the company regarding this issue since they do sell doors to see if they could work with me and there was no response. They have scheduled installation of the second closet twice and have cancelled both times. i have been waiting over 10 weeks for the closet to be installed. When they called today to cancel the installation for tomorrow I demanded a refund of some of my money and they guys said well i don't know maybe i can take care of something when pressed he offered a $100 what a joke . My closets were ordered in August it is Mid November and they have cancelled the installation 3 times. I also ordered new closet doors from California Closets 3 weeks ago and they have already been installed. What a difference in customer service and quality read more

We have never been happier! All of our communication and interaction with Closets by Design was creative, inspirational, talented, efficient, skilled, accommodating and professional. The product itself is of the highest quality as delivered as shown and promised. Initial meeting with designer Gaye was very pleasant. Our project was complicated and she took her time going over every detail and presenting options she thought would be helpful. She was able to procure an additional discount on top of the 50% offer that they were currently offering. Installation manager, Harry was courteous and efficient in coordinating the scheduling. He called the day before to remind me and was very accommodating to our schedule. Installer Carlos was first class!! He knew his product well and wasted no time; a skilled craftsman and true efficiency expert. There was a mis-measurement on our corner unit. We discussed it, remeasured and he was back the next week to complete the job. His assistant was learning from a true craftsman! I will post pictures later - we are still putting things away. All in all I am so happy and if I had the money I'd do all of the garage. Um maybe later, for now I'm happy with what we have! read more
