So we have been going to Clover Grill for over 20 years when we visit New Orleans. Each time it has been really good food and great service in a spotless old school greasy spoon. This past week we visited and we could both tell right away things were different. The inside of the restaurant was filthy and I mean filthy. You could see the floor under the bar and in the kitchen hadn't been cleaned in months. The fryers hadn't been cleaned in a very long time. Everything just looked dirty and like no effort is put into cleaning and maintenance. We decided to eat anyway which was a mistake. We love their burgers that are cooked and steamed old school. We both ordered one. My wife ordered hers with bacon, which they charge over 3 bucks for. We both ordered our burger dressed with all the fixings. When my wife's burger came out it had no bacon and no fixings. I told the waiter and he said he would handled it. He never did as he started doing other orders. My burger had no flavor and it looked like the person that made it didn't care , which goes along with the restaurant cleanness. One thing that really turned us off was the was other guest were treated by staff. The "cook" was completely pissed off and had a horrible attitude. A group came in looking for a table and there wasn't room. He yelled at them that there wasn't room. They stood in the entrance area for a few moments and then he yelled at them that they needed to get out of the restaurant and wait outside. He told them this isn't a restroom so don't wait in line. The attitude and distain in his voice was overwhelming. A few minutes later a couple came in and found 2 seats at the bar. They decided to order food to go and was talking to the waiter. One of the 2 people ordering was standing behind the empty bar seat while they ordered. The cook yelled at this person that they needed to sit down. Both customers were stunned. The waiter told the cook they were making an order to go and the cook could be heard muttering under his breath. This little guy was nothing but attitude and seemed extremely pissed off the there. Maybe instead of being the restaurant traffic cop and total smart ass he should concentrate on getting orders straight since ours was screwed up and never fixed. The dining stools and counter top feel authentic and original to the restaurant making it a full diner experience. I've been a loyal customer of this establishment for over two and a half decades. However, my recent visit was a complete disappointment. I went in to ask a simple question, but the purple-haired woman behind the counter was incredibly rude and uncomfortable. It's as if they've turned it into a tourist trap, I feel completely disrespected and won't be stepping foot in that establishment until they fire that man? with an ego. Came here on a whim. As a place we went to prior wasn't serving food and it was only 7.30p. This diner isn't big but the food is good and reasonably priced. In the mood for breakfast, there you go. Husband and I ordered the same breakfast special but got our eggs style d different. Had mine scrambled and his sunny side up. Also i added on sausage and he added hashbrowns. They only have the basic coke products, coffee, tea, or juice. It's a small dinner set up. No bathroom inside so make sure you go prior. From certain tomes of the morning the breakfast specials. Having been in business since 1939 within a white-painted building with green trim, the Clover Grill continues to offer burgers, breakfast, chicken-fried steak, and other sandwiches for reasonable prices that are quite satisfying. The burger is cooked with their signature seasoning (not sure what it was, but it was good), and I had it with bacon, an extra patty, and mushrooms. Clover Grill is small, but nonetheless a French Quarter institution. In a town where food options are surprisingly sparse after nine or ten pm, Clover Grill is open. Never closes. There when you need it, even if it's 3 am on a Monday morning. Reviewer Eddie C. calling this a "Gay Waffle House" is on the nose. There are some distinctions, though: The menu at Clover is a wee bit broader. Ask for blue cheese on your burger at Waffle House, for example. There's a real club sandwich on the menu at Clover. In contrast to the bland toothpick-style potatoes at Waffle House, Clover's grits come with an overly-generous slather of melted butter, but toast and biscuit to the rescue! Burgers are grilled under a hub cab cover to help steam them along, especially as the patty is coming out of a freezer. They're satisfyingly large and pretty good. That is, at least for some of us: Several years back I served a week as chauffer for an actor working in town. One evening after rehearsal, my charge was hungry and seeking a late night meal. The only options I could conjure were a suburban Denny's, a Brother's gas station cafe. or the Clover Grill. To take a guy with Emmys and Oscars at home on his mantlepiece to a chain restaurant or gas station would be to die of humiliation. Plus, Clover Grill was in walking distance of the actor's hotel--I could just drop him off and avoid awkwardly sitting or waiting around. As quirky and gay and a little rough around the edges as it was, Clover Grill still had my full confidence in providing suitable late night repast. Alas, it was not to be; the next day I was summoned aside for a private round of excoriation over the "worst hamburger I ever ate." Well, sir. I'm sorry you didn't have a good experience. No, this wasn't fresh Wagyu beef ground on demand (something the recently promoted Lee Iacocca discovered in 1963 after eating a burger with Henry Ford II in his private suite for the first time. Iacocca asked the chef how one makes such excellent burgers. The chef led him back and showed him a slab of imported Waygu beef and a gleaming meat grinder). Yes, the Clover Grill burger is frozen; yes, it's cooked under a hubcab that probably saw 100,000 miles of road. But it's a damn good burger at 3 am, sir. Not saying you couldn't have gone to Waffle House, but again--would blue cheese be an option? I think not. And actually it's a damn good burger at any hour. Suffice to say for good local food at the quieter end of Bourbon Street, it's Clover Grill. The food itself is decent, but five stars for the mere fact they're always open and staffed (with some really colorful personalities, I will note). read more

The eggs were tasty - probably because of the butter - and the bacon in my friend's omelette was perfectly crispy. The biscuit was also covered in butter, as was the toast. We came in during a night on the town for a quick bite. A person who seemed like the manager was rude to the customers and his own staff. He disparaged customers to other customers, treated his staff with an angry attitude and unkindly, and slammed things around in the cooking space. There were very few patrons in the restaurant and it took 30 minutes to get our chili dogs. We could see the already cooked hotdogs in their buns sitting on the counter for 10 minutes before the manager realized the chili had not been made and proceeded to get mad at his staff. We then watched as he angrily cooked the chili on the grill while slamming things around. At one point, the whole restaurant got smoked out and they did not open a door or window. It caused my friend and I to start coughing and still no attempt was made to air it out. The restaurant itself was dirty. I would never go back. I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone or go back there myself. read more
