Experience following an auto accident leaves me with questions about CMA policies and management. A CMA executive driving a dealership vehicle hit our car, was found to be at fault, changed his story, and stood by, allowing questionable actions to delay resolution of our claim. Why am I wary? (Based on reports from my husband, Virginia state police, insurance company representatives, and personal observations): 1 -- Our vehicle was hit from behind on I-64 east. The CMA executive was cited by police for following too close. No one else was ticketed. After saying he couldn't stop, the CMA executive changed his story and blamed a lane change by my husband for causing the accident. Completely untrue. 2 -- The CMA executive had no insurance or registration info with him at the scene, and later provided a contact who failed to respond to multiple messages. After about a week of silence, we contacted the dealership and were told not to call again, but to wait to hear from the contact provided. More time passed, and still no response. Eventually, research revealed the "contact" was a former employee at CMA's insurance sales brokerage, neither an agent nor active employee of an insurance carrier able to process our claim for damages. 3 -- More research led us to an actual insurance carrier for the dealership and vehicle which hit our car. CMA documents showed the vehicle was not listed in the dealership inventory where the at-fault driver had an office, but was assigned to inventory for a dealership in Colonial Heights. Colonial Heights said they were not involved, another contradiction of documents CMA had provided. We filed a claim with a different insurer CMA had listed, then learned that carrier had been instructed to drop it so CMA could use their third party administrator to "process" our claim. For over a month, messages were ignored, and there was no reimbursement of towing expenses, no authorization for repairs, and no replacement vehicle to drive -- completely unlike the experience of the CMA executive who was driving another dealer-owned vehicle in no time. The CMA executive then advised us to file a claim with our own carrier, meaning we would be covering the deductible and also running the risk of a premium increase due to the claim, even though we were not at fault. CMA's third party admininstrator stalled inquiries by our insurance carrier as well, failing to return phone calls and using various tactics which resulted in delays resolving the claim. It was during this time that the CMA executive changed his story and alleged my husband caused the accident by changing lanes even though both vehicles had been traveling in the left lane for some time prior to the collision. 5 -- CMA's third party administrator filed a request for mediation, seeking to prove their client was NOT at fault despite the police citation and testimony from my husband. This further delayed settling the claim. Ultimately, mediation ruled that the CMA executive was at fault. 6 -- The BMW my husband and I had bought a few months before the accident was totaled, and we were unable to replace it with a comparable make, model year, and mileage vehicle despite searches in VA, NC, and MD. Our insurance carrier can legally negotiate to recover company losses, but we're on our own trying to recover from CMA's third party administrator who's already proven difficult and uncooperative. So much time, money, and aggravation for an innocent party because CMA refused to do the right thing. We wrote to the CMA President and CEO and heard nothing back from her either. Not a great first impression of CMA, particularly when, as a new manager, the CMA executive emphasized values such as "fairness", "accountability", and "eliminating excuses" in an interview, and the CEO was quoted as saying, "Spread love wherever you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier," when interviewed after receiving an automotive dealership reward. read more

Her communication and quick responses via text and emails aided me in making a decision Before driving from Fredericksburg. After I made my decision and drove the truck home, I noticed that the Blindspot monitoring and some other sensors were not functioning incorrectly. I took the truck back for repair and had a very good experience with Martin, the used car manager. He allowed me to use a loaner While they troubleshoot my truck. The Communication from Martin was exceptional. I'm not sure who the technician was And repaired my truck, but they did a very good job and I received a truck and it was when I dropped it off. Dealing with this service center made me trade in my Cadillac for a Subaru. Both of my parents and I have driven Cadillacs for as long as I can remember. If my family wasn't driving Cadillacs, we were in other GM-brand cars. Our love for Cadillac is deep, and this service center's poor quality made me leave the brand. They do not ever fix a problem on the first try. Every time I picked up my vehicle from this center, the issue I took it in for would recur within a day and I would either have to take it back or be towed back. They exhibit astonishingly bad customer service, especially when your vehicle is still under warranty. None of the employees appeared interested in helping me feel safe in my vehicle so I moved to a different company who would. I really wanted this vehicle to work out, and I kept trying to get better results with this service center, but they proved to me that they were unreliable time and time again. I strongly feel I have upgraded car-wise, service-wise, and safety-wise by taking my business elsewhere. Edited to add: Last year, the service center had one of their employees drive my car to his house overnight to see if an issue persisted. They did not ask for my permission to do so, and I did not approve of my car being driven to a foreign house for an overnight stay. In addition, my car was driven over 80 MPH which is reckless driving in Virginia. When I brought this issue up to the manager, they made many excuses and brushed it off. This made me very uncomfortable and unhappy, but I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt. Never again! read more

I had a simple oil change at this dealership in Charlottesville and it was a poor experience. The price quoted when I set the appointment was about half of what the charged me. Their new sales people were looking for people that looked like better prospects then me so I was totally ghosted in two of their showrooms too. They would not honor the price they quoted and have extremely poor follow-up. I think they really dont want to know or care to resolve customer concerns. I strongly recommend you find another dealer. We have had our Chevrolet Workhorse chassis motor home in the Colonial truck service two times. The first time was for the chassis air conditioner. They 'worked' on the coach for 2 days before telling us that they'd have to tear the entire system down (at diagnostic prices) just to figure out what was wrong because they didn't know what they were doing - yes, they said that. We declined and took the coach over to Richmond where the service shop took an hour to find the problem: the radiator needed flush and fill. Brakes failed on us a week ago and Colonial was MUCH closer with 'iffy' brakes, so we took it back. After over 2 days, they tell us we need a complete brake job (the front brakes are less than a year old with less than a thousand miles on them) for over $6K, and that one part alone was over $2K. We found the exact same part - OEM - for $500. We will (slowly and carefully, with iffy brakes) take the coach back to the shop in Richmond! We will never again trust Colonial for so much as an oil change. I guess we look gullible that they felt they could scam us this way. read more

They made the process very simple even though we were in Chicago. When I flew in to pick up the car everything was ready and the process was very easy. After having been a customer of CMA for a long time, I took my car in for an inspection today. I have a 2012 Terrain that is rarely driven (less than 3000 miles a year) I was advised I needed a new exhaust manifold, countless others flushes and additions to pass inspection (keeping in mind the engine in this particular vehicle was brand new and under 50k miles thanks to a recall). They couldn't provide photos of the supposed crack. Skeptical, I took it elsewhere, NO MANIFOLD ISSUES FOUND. Vehicle passed easily and the tech at the other business said he couldn't find any issues with the manifold at all. I won't ever return to CMA. read more

Very disappointed! Went in for annual vehicle inspection on two cars, which we had appointments for. Waited and waited.... When we asked, we were THEN told they were "running behind"... for 8:30am and 8:45am appointments! If y'all KNOW you're running behind, it would be courteous to INFORM your customers!!! Additionally, while inspecting my husband's car, they discovered his brakes needed replacing AND messed up a piston on a caliper so we couldn't take the car elsewhere for repairs! I am not sure whether some kind of new management has made this company worse or not, but the service is not what it used to be. I have been a customer for over 15 years. This place charges substantially more than other shops, but it's a dealership, so that's understandable. Presumably, you pay more because you are getting good work from trained people. When I picked up the car after repair, there were expensive unordered charges, which were not needed nor requested. The cost for my major work exceeded their verbal estimate, and they never contacted me in advance about that. Also, another straightforward, minor job had huge labor costs, which I found to be excessive or worse. I am trying to get an adjustment on the bill, but it has been three days and they're still stalling about it. Even if I do get an adjustment, this is not the kind of service I would have expected from these folks. The lessons learned are: Never do business with a car shop verbally. Get an estimate in writing and write down on the work order form that they have to contact you for permission before exceeding the estimate. Never trust them to give you a fair price for minor work without getting a written estimate. Don't think that just because the shop gave you good service and fair prices in the past, it will in the future. read more

This place is nothing but a scam to some who own cars but are not knowledgeable about them. People are being told ir charged for repairs that don't need to be done. Or are told repairs are done that aren't and charged for them anyway. Today my sister told her car failed inspection because her headlight lenses weren't clear enough. Told her rear brake light was out and the whole housing neede replacing. The light is not out because i checked it myself. So what does replacing the housing have to do with a bulb being out? One lady today was told she needed spark plugs to pass inspection. One man was told his washer resevoir needed replacing. This is for only 1 day. We called last week about the recall on our truck to make the appointment. We called on a Tuesday and make the appointment for the next Tuesday to do the recall and oil change and tire rotation. Dropped the truck off this morning and they told us it would be 3 or 4. So we said ok. Went back to pick up the truck at 3:30 and the only thing done was the oil change. Said that the parts for the recalled was not there. Did not say anything about that when we dropped the truck off. Did not even give us a call about it. When I made the appointment, they checked with parts about the recall. Not happy at all. No idea when the part would be there. So our day was wasted. Do not go here for a recall!!!! read more

Dont waste you're time dealing with this dealership. My family and I have bought from other CMA dealerships in the past for a total of 9 cars and we will NEVER return. I had been looking for a hybrid CRV in a certain color for months and finally located one at the CMA dealership in Richmond, which is 2.5 hours away from home. Did the online purchase option with a trade in and was given a KBB quote which I thought was appropriate. So I continued with the purchase. The next day, I didn't not hear back so I called. Was informed that my info never came through but they had the vehicle I wanted and it wasn't even on the lot yet because it just came in. I advised I was leaving and would be there in 2 hours. When we arrived, the person who I had been corresponding with was gone and they had sold the car. The sales manager then approached us as advised that he was informed that the online sales representative advised me that the car was unavailable. Why would I have drove 2.5 hours to view a car that isn't available I asked? He replied, I'm not sure I don't know what's going on. Fast forward to getting my trade in appraised and was low balled on the price.. instead of KBB, which is advertised online and at their store, the give you market price and relate the low offer to depreciation on your vehicle. I advised that that isn't what was provided online or the quote that I was given. All I was given for a response was, sorry we can give you what you want... more like sorry we can't give you what your vehicle is actually worth according to KBB and NADA. A complete waste of 5 hours and not once did they try to right their wrong. I will never be back! read more

Purchased a 2018 GMC Terrain new from Haley in Richmond knowing that I would service locally while under warranty. Every experience I had with Colonial Service was negative and left me feeling frustrated. First years inspection they tried to charge me the wrong price, but quickly fixed it. During another inspection, oil change and blade replacements they recommended filter changes. I asked for the total price so I could decide if I wanted to do them and based on the final price given I agreed. I specifically asked for the final and not an estimate. When I came to pick up my car it was 25% higher - all of the services I had were set prices, no labor involved. After a lot of back and forth I was offered a discount - it was about $20 more but I was fine with it so I could just leave. I received a call the next day saying I had been given the total for an incorrect filter model and no one called to update me with the correct information. They apologized. I had no issues with the car itself until January of 2021 when my car suddenly lost power while accelerating. A dashboard light came on and OnStar emailed me an error code. Scheduled a service (only still going here because my car was still under bumper to bumper warranty) on a Saturday where I said don't do anything not covered under warranty without calling me first and confirmed I would be called and the car would be ready by 6. When I hadn't heard from them by 4 I called and they advised they were closing, the advisor had given me the wrong closing time. I rush there and they tell me nothing is wrong with the car and were charging over $100 for running a diagnostic - again on a car still on full warranty and after I rushed there because no one called me. They could only confirm that the notes said he tried to call me and the number listed was correct. They called back while I was driving there - the number was fine. My car continued to have 6 services in 8 weeks, none of which resolved the problem of randomly loosing acceleration and then shooting off suddenly and bouncing/bucking randomly when in drive or reverse when not accelerating. First it was a new sensor, then a cracked intake hose, then a reset required - and the list went on. My original diagnostic fee was refunded because they found a 'bulletin' of this being a known problem that they missed previously. Again this was a car purchased new that was only 3 years old and less than 32k miles. It resulted in me calling GMC corporate and having to leave my car with Colonial for a week where they provided a loaner. Corporate actually called me an hour after I received the loaner to confirm that my car problem was resolved per her phone call with Colonial that morning and I was back in my Terrain. I had to explain how that wasn't true. After having a loaner for a week the car issue seemed to be resolved. I was told they were unaware of another program update that was needed which had now fixed the issue of unregulated air being brought in. However at this point my bumper to bumper was expiring and, while for the most part everyone I had dealt with was nice, I wasn't sure if the car itself was the problem or the service department. I ordered a Kia Telluride so that I would not have to work with Colonial anymore (as not all warranties on the car were expired). Thus far I am happy with my decision and feel relieved. read more

Went to look at a vehicle and the following happened: 1) They said they would give me the price that another dealer had lower but the sales order proved to me did not reflect that, it WAS HIGHER! 2) The guy I was working with quit the next day and no one contacted me 3) called manager (Mike Johnson) and he claimed someone would call, no one did WOW, NO CUSTOMER SERVICE HERE! AVOID!!!! First time I have been disappointed by Nissan. They were so bad here I am probably going to go to a different brand of cars, which is strange for me as I have driven Nissan cars only for 15years. Very disappointed in Nissan dealers in Virginia. They basically really suck and do not understand what honesty and customer service is truly about. I will be putting a complaint into corporate about this Nissan. Typical dealership service shop...I was driving from Charlotte, NC to DC on the night of 12/30/14 when a wheel bearing on my truck went bad just outside of Charlottesville. I was able to limp into town to and got a hotel room for the night. Woke up the morning of the 31st and popped over to Colonial Auto. I explained my situation to the guy at the service desk and told him I was hoping to be able to make it to work in Fairfax by 12:30. Guy: "Well, we don't have the part. Earliest we could get it would be Friday." Me: "Is there any auto parts store in town with the part?" Guy after making a phone call: "Fisher's has an after-market part that'll work. They can have it here in a half hour or so. Of course, I'll have to markup the price on it a little bit. It'll run you about $350 for the part." Me, after wondering why the hell they were marking up the price for a wheel bearing by $100 when the part is DELIVERED TO THEM!!!!: "Um, how much would it be if I drive across town and pick it up myself?" Guy: "oh yeah, sure....I guess you could do that. You might be able to save some money that way. But we probably won't be able to get you in until 11:30 at the earliest." Me: Umm...no thanks. CMA Colonial Auto Center is fantastic! I had been having intermittent car troubles that the dealership - where I bought the car in PA - was unable to fix despite multiple visits. When I moved to VA, I took my Lincoln to CMA and they diagnosed and fixed the problem immediately. They have done this on more than one occasion. Every time, Bri has been kind and courteous. The Master Lincoln technician has addressed every issue. The gentleman who drove me back to my apartment was kind and professional. I cannot recommend this Auto Center enough. When i got rear ended, the staffs at Colonial helped me patiently with the paperwork and also on top of that assisted me with rental car before i picked my recent car which they cut me quite a deal. The owner needs to send her through more extensive training or better yet she needs to change her profession all together. I drove over 2hrs to purchased a car on July 17,2021. It took nearly a month from the time I purchased to get the mailed copy of my paperwork that they never gave me while I was there. But gave me the paperwork for my extended warranty which I thought it was all in there until I got home. They supposedly had mailed out that Monday after I purchase. I had called more then 4 times and then had to call back a week later cause I still hadnt received it. Along with it taking just as long for me to get my tags. Which I called the DMV and was told that the paperwork was just submitted Aug 5. I'm which I had sent an email the day before to dealership asking about my tags. Then which they priority mailed them. But it didn't take them 24hrs to cash my check. We were looking at a pickup there for my husband as well but we ended up going to Richmond,VA and got him one the following weekend. (And he got his tags a week after) Cause with Kallie and general manager Nick that I waited for to call me back about the issues I was having and never did. I had to call him back. After I spent my money there. I (we) will never again purchase anything even if they were giving it away from CMA and I will let everyone know the service that I (we) got was the worst unprofessional mess. Due to the way they treat their employees though I will never buy another car from them or any of their other dealerships. I'm hoping that I'll be able to change this to 5 stars when I finally get my car back, but that seems unlikely. I brought my car in on the recommendation of CarMax last Thursday (8/23) at 7:30 in the morning. I told the technician that I needed it back by 2 pm - he told me that shouldn't be a problem. When I called later that Thursday, I was told that my car was "unsafe to drive" and should be fixed by the next day. I was not offered a shuttle, not a loaner, nor a rental car, so I had to Uber to an appointment that day, and I was forced to arrange my own transportation through Hertz. Called on Friday, but the parts they needed weren't in yet. Extended my rental through the weekend - $300 more out of my pocket. Called on Monday, part is still not in. Extended my rental again - more money out of pocket. Called again today - haven't gotten a call back yet. Being under 25 means that my rental is exorbitantly more expensive, and I'm being treated by Colonial as less than important, and at this point I will no longer be bringing my business or anyone else's here. read more
