I really really really wanted to like this place. Maybe my friends and I caught them on a bad day, but every part of the experience was poor. First to start with, it seemed as if they were understaffed when we arrived. After being seated by the hostess it took nearly 15 minutes for our drink orders to be taken. Next, when it came time to order we were told that they were out of beef dumplings and rice.........rice.......With the limited menu options, i decided to get a bowl of their pho w/ rare beef (my go-to at most vietnamese restaurants). My first sign that this was going to be a poor bowl of Pho was when it took nearly half an hour to come out (if you're familiar with the pho making process, most restaurants start the day by making a large batch of broth in the morning and using that throughout the day until they run out), the fact that it took this long let me know that the broth was probably not fresh. Next, when I got the pho, I noticed they didn't provide any hoisin sauce, a must for my pho. When I asked, I discovered that they were out of hoisin sauce as well.....that's three key components that I was looking for at the restaurant that they were out of. After that disappointment I decided to approach the bowl of pho with a positive outlook and hope for the best. After mixing the dish a bit trying to disperse the flavor of the lime and jalapeño I added, I realized that the rice vermicelli wasn't really coming a part as easily as I was used to. I didn't think much of it and kept going. Then i tried to pick up a chunk of rice vermicelli and realized they were so mushy my chopsticks went right through them, so clearly overcooked. The broth had an okay flavor and the beef was fine so I was able to finish the meal. I really wanted to give this restaurant a 1 star, but the saving grace for them was that they were able to accomodate my friend who's vegan with a vegan bun xao salad. I really appreciate that because at a lot of places all she can order is a dry salad and bread...... Nevertheless, this was an overall lackluster experience and I probably wouldn't give them a second shot given the experience. I welcome everyone to go and form their own opinion though. read more

We ate at CO for lunch yesterday and it was delicious! I had the green papaya salad with extra shrimp instead of pork. I don't eat pork, and the kitchen happily substituted. The salad was shredded papaya instead of lettuce, which was really interesting and delicious. There were lots of shrimp on it too, sometimes I feel like restaurants skimp on the shrimp, but not CO. Even without an appetizer, it was very filling to me. I liked the nuts as well, because it gave the salad a crunch. It's definitely something I'd order again. One thing I really liked about CO is that they have a separate vegan and gluten free menu. I didn't actually see it in the restaurant, but it's on their website. There's plenty there for meat and gluten eaters too, but I like that they make an effort to please everyone. I personally thought both menus had lots of excellent options, and the staff was great with substitutions. The portions are also quite large. We didn't have any issues at all, although it did take our food awhile to come out, everything was super hot and delicious when it did. Like many businesses on King Street, you need to pay attention in order not to miss this one. It is the normal narrow entrance, but has a deep area once inside. The bar is immediately to your right and there are only a few seating options other than at the bar, and the restrooms are down the long hallway toward the back. Don't miss the upstairs! There is a cozy couch area and several wide picnic tables at which to sit. Don't misunderstand me though, the tables don't feel like you're at some country function, they are very nice. The seating allows for multiple parties to sit together, but they aren't forced to mingle if they don't want to. It's a little loud, but it goes with the vibe of this place. It's very inviting and fun. We started with a few apps, namely the shrimp spring rolls and the Shanghai chicken wontons. I didn't personally try either, but man they looked delicious. For entrees, we got some of the typical dishes, namely the beef pho, Korean rice bowl, and Vietnamese chicken salad. Myself and another patron got the Curry Laksa. OMG! It was soooooo good. And I had leftovers for another meal. For downtown, the prices were reasonable. For the quality of food and service we received, the prices were on the cheap side. This place is very hit or miss. Sometimes the food is delicious and other times it can be so flavorless. For example, one time I got the beef pho and it was really good! Another time I got it, the broth was completely flavorless and I practically had to drench it in sriracha to give it flavor. They do have a good happy hour where you can get cheap appetizers and drinks! They have a $3 menu, $4 menu, and $5 menu with different appetizers and drink specials. The happy hour is the main reason why I return to CO. The service is consistently slow, I've never had fast service here, even when it wasn't busy. I'm not sure if they just need more servers or if they're just slacking around. It's one of the few places to get pho in Charleston, so I like that there's that. I just wish the food was always consistent in being good. You never know how it's going to be when you walk inside. read more

After eating heavy Southern foods, I wanted to get a pho and spring roll. Everything here was terrible. Dumplings-very heavy dough. Dipping sauce was just soy sauce. Pho-does not taste like pho. Broth came out warm. I like my pho broth hot. Spring rolls, way too much sprouts. Can't even taste pork. If you had Pho in California, you would be very disappointed. Bahn mi was terrible too. Walked all the way from my hotel since I was craving Pho and it shows that they are open online and even on the menu outside it shows 11-9pm it's open. There were a whole bunch of people drinking at the bar soon as I walked they yelled they are closed and started laughing. Underwhelming especially for the price. I ordered edamame, green papaya salad, and mango summer rolls. The green papaya salad was 98% cabbage when it should be 20% cabbage-green papaya should be the star. Honestly, I'm not sure there was any papaya in it period- I was searching for it. The summer rolls were okay, the peppers should have been blanched or something to soften bc tearing them caused the roll to fall apart. Definitely regretting spending $40 on this takeout. To make matters worse, no one would make eye contact with me when I went to pick up. I was clearly being ignored until I flagged someone down. Visited for the first time tonight for my son's birthday. He chose it because he and his girlfriend love happy hour there. The happy hour specials were good but the dinner left a lot to be desired. There were four of us and two of us got our food and it took about 10 minutes for the other two to get theirs so food was cold. one order was incorrect even after asking twice if it was the right thing and being assured that it was but then getting the bill and finding out that it was not. The Banh mi was mediocre at best. The flavor was good but the meat was very sparse and chewy. The rice bowl was so-so. The rice was hard and the entire meal was lukewarm. Not much meat on it but the flavor was good. For dessert we got the strawberry spring rolls. They were dripping with oil and basically just a few slices of strawberry wrapped in Filo dough. Overall, I wouldn't recommend going there for dinner. Happy hour, absolutely but the hundred dollars spent was absolutely not worth it. read more

I am always satisfied leaving CO. Then menu is delightful and it's hard to find food like this in Charleston. While there is no parking it is pretty easy to get to being located right on King Street. Every time I go here I have such a hard time deciding what I am going to get. I've gone with a bunch of people and we ordered like 10 things and got to try a little bit of everything but I also enjoy the Pho Ga, Pad Thai, and the Drunken Noodle. I've had the Pork Buns, Korean Rice Bowl, and Dumplings and everything is always pretty delicious!! I've been going here for 4 years and happy to see them stay on king street! Between my husband and I, we had a Vietnamese iced coffee, mango summer rolls, spicy udon noodles, and chicken laksa. Everything was delicious and the portions were huge! My husband typically finishes his plate but had to get a to-go container. Our server was very attentive without being overbearing. Our waters were always filled and the food came out quickly. My only con is the seating, which I found to be uncomfortable, but perhaps it's because I'm pregnant. I'm so disappointed to be writing another bad review.. Two days in a row.. I didn't really expect much from this place because Asian fusion type of restaurants usually don't have good food. This falls into that stereotype. I'm so unimpressed. I would not recommend this place. You're not really missing out on anything. I ordered the Curry Laksa and I basically just got all noodles and cilantro.. the broth is good, I'll give it that. It says there's shredded chicken and shrimp, BUT... let me just show you how sad my dish was.. This looks like ONE shrimp cut into 4 pieces. There was only ONE SMALL piece of shredded chicken. Excellent service as soon as we stepped through the door! Self seat, either upstairs with a view or downstairs by the bar to mingle and say hello. Everyone has a smile on their face and very knowledgeable on their menu. Our server was very nice and attentive and gave us her personal favorites on the menu. I had the spicy pho and my wife had the shrimp curry laska. I was soo jealous of my wifes dish, especially since it had coconut curry, my favorite. I like to stop into CO for their Happy Hour specials because the prices are low ($3-6) and they offer several different food and drink options. I like that you can see the hustle and bustle of King Street through their front window and sometimes I luck out to get my favorite people watching table right there at the front door with perfect street view. Just have to be careful if you seat yourself here because it is lower than the bar and I think the waitstaff easily misses that someone has joined them if you don't walk up to bar and order for yourself. I've tried many of their HH appetizer options but repeatedly order their edamame because it is so plentiful and perfectly salty. One complaint though is no dipping sauce- and although I am sure I could ask I feel as though it should be something it is just served with. My most recent visit the bartender seemed to be very overwhelmed by those sitting/ordering around her. This wouldn't have been an issue if there hadn't been 2-3 waitstaff (to include a man that looked to be a manager) just standing around watching her struggle to tend to the many people eagerly waiting for service. read more

So have been coming here for a number of years (infrequently) and unfortunately this place has deteriorated significantly. At lunch there was no wait staff only a bartender so everyone had to sit downstairs along the bar and one table. Fine. But the food was just poor. Chili Chicken wings were fried beyond description and inedible. Bartender was nice enough to take them off our bill and she seemed frustrated. Green Papaya salad had almost no papaya in it - it was all cabbage. Gyoza we're ok at best and expensive for 4 small gyoza. Fried rice was mushy and not good. Their food is declining in quality, or it is inconsistent. We were there for lunch and the service was extremely slow, took 30+ min to get our food, our waiter was not attentive at all. The food was mediocre at best and my friend's Bun Xiao had old looking rice noodle that were all clumped up and 1" short, as if they just gathered up scraps from a tub of noodles prepared yesterday, not fresh at all and kinda gross. It's hip, its trendy, they have an upstairs, they have a downstairs, they have a bar, they have a community table, they have infused sake, they have killer pho, they have an environment that is hip and urban, yet still casual. They are in the heart of King Street and the College of Charleston Campus. They have a solid wine selection and a diverse beer selection. Spring rolls and pot stickers are well worth the trip. Did we mention a great Monday - Friday Happy Hour. This place may look small and dark from the outside, but once you are inside, it is small and dark, but the friendly staff, intimate setting and comfortable open environment is worth the experience. Went here a week ago for a bachelorette party. We didn't have a reservation and was told it was an hour wait. We definitely did not have to wait a full hour and were able to kill time at the brewery across the street. They texted us when the table was ready so you can walk around. The food was delicious. I got the spicy udon. Which was definitely spicy. So if you only want light spice look for something else. But if you love spicy like I do- get this dish. The only reason for 4 stars is that everything took a lot longer than I would have liked. I won't take more than that off because the food was so good and the staff was apologetic. 1. They have a fruit fly problem at the bar. 2. The bartender watched some styrofoam to-go cups fall on the floor and I saw her pick them up and put them back onto the shelf. 3. The happy hour cocktail "bourbon fizz" had no bourbon in it- she did take it off the bill when everyone at the bar agreed it had no alcohol in it and told her. 4. We ordered tofu buns- we got pork buns. I told the bartender this to which she answered "the happy hour buns are pork." Even though we clearly stated in our order "Tofu buns." not "happy hour buns," or "pork buns." This demonstrated a lack of accountability. We won't be coming back. read more

I come to co all the time because I absolutely love the food here and the service is typically great. Unfortunately, tonight I found myself half of a bug into dinner. You read that correct. As I was eating my dinner, I found the remaining half of a bug. I went to the bathroom sick and vomiting. My group notified the server who was so kind who then notified the ''manager' who was the bartender. She came up and offered zero apology and expected me to pay for the half eaten. Was sitting at Starbucks before the storm came in and was looking for a place near with good reviews. Stopped in and got a table upstairs, I'm afraid I did not get my waitresses name but she was awesome friendly and spot on. All I can say is she was a blond gal. I've always loved Co, the food is spot on. They do a great job during covid satanizing the tables after each guest leaves, wearing masks, and blocking certain tables for great social distancing. They also have a scan menu that's easy to use and easy to understand. Our summer fresh spring rolls were very fresh! It was my first time trying the drunken Thai and it was a pleasant surprise. My husband, sister, God-brother and I arrived during the slow time between lunch and dinner (~3:00 pm) and we were able to sit right away. The servers were friendly and we were able to sit right away and get our orders taken. I ordered the five-spice pork belly banh mi and it was just enough food that I was able to finish without feeling like I had overstuffed myself. The bread was a bit hard but the bread and meat/sauce was tasty. My husband ordered the Bún Bò Hue and it was tasty but DEFINITELY spicy, the description was not joking. My sister ordered the pad thai and it was delicious with a generous portion. My God-brother ordered the pho and he liked it just fine. Man, we wanted to like this place, but we were disappointed. Started off good--space is cool, is seat yourself & we had no problem at 7:30 on a Friday night finding seats for 2 people. The drinks were great--we both had the infused sake. The lemongrass one was good but the cucumber one was awesome. The problems started with the appetizers. It took a full 30 min for them to come out, which is pretty bad for appetizers. They weren't crazy appetizers either--mango spring rolls and the wings. The wings were great, when they came out. Really crispy and yummy. Our main dishes came out pretty soon after. I ordered ramen, which was pretty good, although the broth was lacking depth and the noodles weren't as chewy as I like. My husband's dish, the Korean bowl, was in his words "truthfully awful." And he's not one to bad talk a dish. The beef was burnt and tasteless and the rice was hard, like it was a day old. We packed up the leftovers in the hopes we can salvage it on our own, but we don't have high hopes. I want to try it again, but my husband isn't too keen. This place is good. Great flavors and fun atmosphere, I like the seat yourself option. It just isn't very authentic, that's not a bad thing, it's just something to note. We had the udon noodles and pad Thai. I will say the pad Thai was way better than most I've had and the udon noodles were not over cooked. The chicken was inconsistently sized and therefore cooked. I had one really rubbery piece that was sort of long and thin, whereas other pieces were more chunked. The staff was very tired, and the kitchen was slammed so I understand. read more
