I've heard so many good things about Coal Fire but I've never been. Stopped in on a Sunday evening and we were seated immediately. The inside feels like a typical pizza joint. There isn't much seating and the dining room reminds me of an open concept layout. You could see and hear the kitchen which I thought was kind of cool, but I am glad we were sat away from the kitchen. I was surprised to see the menu was as small as it was. Not sure why, but I was expecting a slightly larger restaurant and menu! They do not have any white sauce pastas which was a little disappointing. The pizza was great it was the perfect size for my boyfriend and I. They have happy hour deals and they serve drinks too! The potato skins were tasty and the serving size was very large. For a busy Friday, very good service--- we were a party of 6 and seated right away. Avoid being seated by the door because people come in and out all the time and you're blasted with cold air. I ordered a margarita ($11), which was well made, strong, and flavorful. I also ordered the eggplant parm sandwich, which was supposed to be on an 8" roll but it definitely was like a 2" or 3" roll instead. A significantly small portion. It was okay in taste, flavor, and creativity. The bun was hard and stale. I ordered it with an upcharge of $2 for onion rings but they weren't the thick cut ones but rather battered like shoestring fries and didn't have the same impact of the kinds of fat onion rings I expected. Was craving wood fire pizza, which led us to Coal Fire. Very glad we went. The bar service was as attentive and the server made some great recommendations. We tried the Margarita pizza and added spicy Italian sausage to it and it was great. Only downside is you have to be in the bar for happy hour prices and it can get crowded. Came across this place in the Baltimore's best pizza list , so a friend and I decided to give it a try . Located in a small shopping center (with not so much -just enough parking spots ). Plenty of dinning area and bar room to come and watch the game. The staff was young but very nice with good service. We sat at the bar . My strawberry mojito was okay (didn't hit the way I wanted it to , but then again I'm not really a mojito girl so Idk ). My potatoes skins were perfectly made (minus the "special sauce that went along with it). Our pizza was okay . The onions could have been diced and the special sauce the bartender recommended...was too sweet , which threw the overall taste of the pizza off. I would definitely come back. read more

Don't understand the hype of this restaurant. Their wings are ok, nothing else from the appetizer section hits. Pizza is pretty trash. If you want pizza go somewhere else, there are way better options around Ellicott City! Pastas are way overpriced for their mediocre quality. Hit-or-miss pizza. We ordered from Coal Fire Pizza on a Saturday afternoon. The pizza arrived within the provided order window and was still warm when it arrived. We ordered the Bianca Speciale and a custom pepperoni pizza with the signature sauce. The crust on both pizzas was thin and crispy with a good flavor. The Bianca Speciale was as bland as can be with seemingly no salt, garlic, onion, or any spices in the construction. However, the custom pepperoni pizza was tasty with a good distribution of pepperoni and a delicious sauce. With such a wild variance in pizza quality, it is hard to trust Coal Fire pizza, but I would order the pepperoni pizza with the signature sauce again. read more

This is a small restaurant in Ellicott City. It was very clean and well run. The server was quick to refill our drinks and was very friendly. Now onto the food.....I can't believe I am going to say this but the knockout of the whole meal was the kids chicken tenders. They were super crispy and juicy. I would expect this from a chicken place but not a pizza place. They crushed those tenders. Unfortunately everything else was just average at best. The fries had zero salt on them, which was shocking. The pizza, which should be the best part, was so floppy on the bottom I couldn't believe it. How do you get the crust nice and crispy and then the bottom barely had any color on it? I have to say, I've been here many times and this is the first time I was surprised how the pizza was. I hope next time I go they have it together a little better. The regular cheese pizza and the margarita pizza were identical except for basil on the margarita pizza. I've eaten so much pizza in my lifetime and a margarita pizza should never look exactly like a regular cheese pizza. We tried to make it to coal fire every couple months because they have an excellent happy hour and I really love the lasagna pizza. We tend to eat in the bar because we like to do the happy hour and I'm always impressed by the incredible service we receive and attention from the staff. The pizza is never a miss and it's definitely become one of my favorites. This time we got to try the buffalo chicken pizza along with the lasagna pizza and both were excellent and we definitely had enough for lunch the next day. After visiting with our friends in Ellicott City, Hubby and I stopped at Coal Fire for a quick bite. If you like Margherita Pizza, you can taste the fresh ingredients. Coal Fire was very busy this Labor holiday weekend, but the staff/server handled us efficiently. First, we ordered to go to take back our hotel. Usually this is a place we like to go for pizza and hang out. It has a nice little bar that we usually get a seat, beer and food. Our recent visit wasn't all positive. It was fairly busy but the bar had unbussed tables and the staff was hanging out with customers oblivious the number of people waiting. There were loud guys sitting at the bar that appeared to have been over served. We decided to eat in the restaurant instead. The hostess was great. She worked to get a table cleared and kept us informed. I ordered wings which were over sauced and over cooked. Still they were edible. Margarita pizza was awesome as usual. The cheese on this pizza and sauce are the best around. We will continue to get pizza but maybe take out from now on. read more

A convenient way to get some better than average American food. Coal Fire is a bar/pizza dinning experience that serves cool drinks and hot foods. They offer takeout and outdoor seating and are located in a shopping center with plenty of parking. This alone makes them extremely convenient for grabbing a quick bite for lunch or dinner. Food quality why, it's about what you'd expect for a chain restaurant. The typical American dishes are present from burgers and pizza to sandwiches and salads. You get typical portions, just above too-big but not so big portion sizes to make you feel bloated. The service is speedy and friendly. Nothing jumps out and makes Coal Fire memorable, but that's not a bad thing. I use Coal Fire when I want a hot dinner but I'm strapped for time to make food myself. Order for pickup is quick and easy. I haven't seen them place the food in a warm area, but the food is always toasty when I pick it up. If there is a highlight for Coal Fire, it is there pizzas. They are nice and crispy, perfect for sharing with a friend, and come with a nice amount of toppings without destroying their delicate crusts. If you want a good date night meal, split a pizza with an appetizer and you're good to go. Coal Fire isn't breaking the mold in bar-type eateries, but what it has is a consistent place to grab a good meal with a drink at the end of a long day. read more

I would like to add a review for Coal Fire Pizza. I worked around Yale University for three years in New Haven, Connecticut. New Haven is known as the city for its pizza. There Pepe's , Sally's and a restaurant known as "The Bar." CoalFire's pizza is as good as these famous restaurants in New Haven! I strongly recommend this restaurant! This is my go-to pizza spot.. I always get the 16" well done with signature sauce. It's usually a little charred but this is damn near charcoal. I called and the lady's response was "you did order it well done"... there's a huge difference between well done and charcoal. I'm pretty upset at the response. Hubs and I visited Coal Fire today for the first time. Our bartender was amazing. I am sorry, I forgot his name, but he was extremely attentive. Drinks were strong and the food was great minus the wings. They were cooked in the oven, which usually isn't an issue, but these were over cooked and dry. There's a lot to love about Coal Fire. First, we've visited this location probably 10 times over the last 6 months, and every time the service is fantastic. The wait staff are curious, friendly and attentive and they never seem to be overwhelmed. The food itself if delicious. My favorite item in the menu is their chicken parm sub, which is always breaded and fried to perfection and accompanied by freshly cut shoestring fries. The pizzas, overall are remarkable. My kids love the simple classic sauce with cheese pizza but my favorite is their white pizza. The toppings are awesome too, with my favorite being the slices of Italian sausage. My only critique is that frequently, the pizza slices are cut chaotically and not even close to being even. The bruschetta and mozzarella sticks are our favorite apps (the tomatoes on the bruschetta are always fresh and the goat cheese is amazing and flavorful). The only appetizer I'm not a fan of our the onion rings which are barely onion rings, and instead like fried onion shards. They have decent flavor but aren't as great as the other items. My wife and I usually also get a Caesar or house salad, and consistently the lettuce and veggies are fresh and tasty. read more

TL;DR It's a bar that pretends to make food. Good cannolis, though. We ordered bolognese pasta with a Caesar salad, sausage and mushroom pizza, onion rings, and cannoli. The salad was ok. The onion rings were just a soggy mess in a paper cup. The pizza was thoroughly flavorless: the sausage had a light kick but no real flavor; the mushrooms just tasted wet; the cheese and sauce just made it taste like greasy bread. The bolognese tasted like wet noodles. There was no flavor to the sauce; the meatballs tasted like moist, bland ground beef. Cannolis were good, though. Good cream, not too many chocolate chips, and a good, crispy shell. We got carry-out, but the atmosphere seemed pretty chill. Mostly chatting, smiling faces among the staff and customers. Felt like the emphasis is more on the bar scene and much less on the food. Food prices are too high for the lack of any quality on most of it. read more

Lately I've been allowing my son to try all of the local pizza restaurants. Coal fire pizza was definitely a nice treat . The pizza pie was 12 inches and cooked to perfection. A great combination of Gooey cheese and the crust was nice and crispy. I tried a slice myself and couldn't believe how good it was. While this could be an issue with the delivery driver, I tracked the pickup and delivery time, and it shouldn't have been this cold.
