Lately I've been allowing my son to try all of the local pizza restaurants. Coal fire pizza was definitely a nice treat . The pizza pie was 12 inches and cooked to perfection. A great combination of Gooey cheese and the crust was nice and crispy. I tried a slice myself and couldn't believe how good it was. TL;DR It's a bar that pretends to make food. Good cannolis, though. We ordered bolognese pasta with a Caesar salad, sausage and mushroom pizza, onion rings, and cannoli. The salad was ok. The onion rings were just a soggy mess in a paper cup. The pizza was thoroughly flavorless: the sausage had a light kick but no real flavor; the mushrooms just tasted wet; the cheese and sauce just made it taste like greasy bread. The bolognese tasted like wet noodles. There was no flavor to the sauce; the meatballs tasted like moist, bland ground beef. Cannolis were good, though. Good cream, not too many chocolate chips, and a good, crispy shell. We got carry-out, but the atmosphere seemed pretty chill. Mostly chatting, smiling faces among the staff and customers. Felt like the emphasis is more on the bar scene and much less on the food. Food prices are too high for the lack of any quality on most of it. read more

This is by far my favorite pizza place in all of MD. As a NYC transplant it has been damn near impossible to find anything that comes close to pizza in New York! But I found one!! Dare I say BETTER?! The signature sweet and spicy sauce is what really makes it better and I absolutely love the flavor combo. My only criticism is that they are skimpy with the toppings so I often have to ask for "double pepperoni/sausage" other than that they've been pretty awesome for the past couple years. read more

This place has really good pizza. Ive been there a couple of times, for pizza and pasta. Their food is always good. This time, I picked up a small cheese pizza for lunch. It was tasty and had a nice thin crust. They make the pizzas by hand to order, so it takes about 20 minutes. But the result is great pizza. I will be back next time to pick up another pizza for sure. read more

Great pizza! The crust is thin and charred just right. I love the margarita pizza. The calamari is also very good there and comes with peppers and spicy sauce. Went for a work lunch..located in Ellicott City within a strip mall setting.. Parking was great and easy enough to find.. We had a party of 6.. Went at 12 on a Tuesday, and it wasn't crowded or super busy... They offer both inside & outside seating.. We ordered both apps & entrées.. The waiter was on point & efficient.. Now, let's talk about the food.. We got the oven roasted wings.. They were smothered in onions (no exaggeration) but were a nice flavor.. It comes with bread, but it's buried under the wings & onions.. Next, we had the ahrimp shingle & they were amazing.. Shrimp were cooked perfectly & that mushroom sauce - I could have ordered a glass & drank it.. Most of us ordered sandwiches, and they came out pretty fast.. I ordered an Italian Cold Cut and opted to have it hot... The sandwich would have been a lot better had they toasted the bread.. The service was good and the food was alright. There are options to sit outside, however it was windy so we chose indoors. We were greeted and sat immediately. I used to love the food from this place but haven't ordered in years. Unfortunately, my recent experience was disappointing. The food arrived completely cold--not just lukewarm, but ice cold. While this could be an issue with the delivery driver, I tracked the pickup and delivery time, and it shouldn't have been this cold. Negatives first. Bathroom was filthy. I don't hold it against them when a customer is a pig. But, if it wasn't dinner rush I think it would have been cleaned up. Wonderful service, always so friendly. Feels like home the food is always amazing. New items are always being added to the menu which makes it exciting and fresh. The pizza is of course incredible - three different types of sauces, depending on your mood. The signature sauce is Coalfire's claim to fame. So we wanted to meet some friends in the last week of June 2024. I made my own 12" pizza with their classic sauce. The toppings were fine. The issue I had was with the 'classic sauce'. This was not as much of a sauce as it was strictly tomato paste slathered on the dough. There was no taste of olive oil, basil, oregano, garlic...nothing. It was literally just tomato paste. Ragu would have been an improvement here. I also saw they had spicy sauce and a signature sauce which stated it was a combination of both the classic and spicy sauces. I really am not in the market for spicy tomato sauce, so that's why I requested the classic sauce. Additionally there was quite a good share of hard, crusty crust. The pizza sauce, cheese and toppings could have reached the edge of that crust much closer. There was a lot of wasted space there. I understand the crust is supposed to be a bit charred because it comes from a hot coal fired oven, but mine was too well done. Went for lunch today and was disappointed. Place was empty and server disappeared after pizza came out. The pizza was way undercooked. It was soggy and doughy. Their pizza is suppose to be charred and was far from it. Also, the person who cuts the pizza needs some training. It was horribky cut. Some slices were gigantic and others were tiny. I gotta stop going to these chains because they are god awful. Our pizzas were... wet? Like soggy. Very good pizza for lunch and this place was very very busy at 12:30. Busy enough that there was a 15 minute wait for a table at lunch. That's busy! But there was no wait for a self-service table in the bar area. And yes, it was a bit of a wait in the bar area for service as the waitress was slammed. Not her fault. Once we got the order in for our pizzas, they were ready quickly. My colleague enjoyed his with basil and fresh mozzarella. I chose the bianco. Very tasty with lots of cheese and the sliced tomato was excellent. The 12 inch is plenty big, though not enough for two people to share without something else. I had a third of the pizza to take with me. A nice spot, very busy, good pizza. I could see returning here. read more

As a pizza pro, I have to say I actually prefer their salads and pastas over their pizza. I've had their pizza twice - once with their spicy sauce and again with their signature sauce. Both sauces were way too sweet for my liking. Maybe I'll give them another go and try the classic sauce. Another issue I had most recently were the toppings - $2 a pop. At that price you'd expect there to be toppings on every slice. Nope. Despite paying two bucks for pepperoni our pizza had two slices that were naked and sans pepperoni! Sloppy pizza making! Check your pizza before you leave if you're getting takeout to ensure a properly topped pizza! All of that aside, what I really love about Coal Fire are their salads! They're one of the few places that still embrace crisp iceberg lettuce. Seriously nothing gets on my nerves more than field and micro greens. Here they have salads with the lettuce I love! The salads are pretty large too so you can split them between two people if you're getting pizza too. Also love their zesty honey mustard dressing. Just the right amount of zing! Overall, I'd recommend giving them a try. If you're not into sweet pizza sauce make sure you go with the classic sauce! read more

Finally found a good pizza place! Moved to MD from CT this year and it's been a struggle finding good pizza, but this place hit the spot! The staff was super nice and very attentive throughout our meal. My husband got the warm Cesar salad with chicken and he loved it, as well as the ricotta pizza- he ate the whole thing. Coal Fire is just not the same as it used to be. The restaurant, atmosphere and wait staff are all still good. But the food has gone downhill and I can't explain why. Back in the oughts (00s) we'd go and I'd tell friends and coworkers and they'd be jealous as ... really jealous. But now, we've been a few times recently and the pizza is just OK. Where it used to be some of the best on the planet (in our opinion) now it's purely average. And unfortunately I can't figure out what made it so good and why it isn't now. Having said that, I still think that Coal Fire is worth the visit. Hence the four stars. Maybe their other meals are as great as their pizza used to be. read more
