I can't believe we've forgotten to give Coal Vines a review, we've been coming here for a few months now and having great experiences each time. Everyone's real nice, wine list is good, and the pizza is great. We are trying to get a different red every time and have loved em all. We intend to pick up some wholesale priced wine from here next time too since their pricing is very competitive. The pizza is awesome. It's the best thing we've had in this area. Other places have those nasty cracker thin pizzas that taste like the ones you DIY'ed in elementary school or excessively doughey crusts that lack in texture. Coal Vines does theirs in a legit wood fired oven and you get that correct bit of crunch but not too much. The toppings are quality too and you can't go wrong. read more

I have heard of Coal Vines for a few years but hadn't been for anything more than a glass of wine with friends. Had a Valentine's date here last month, and even though my date was boring, the food was definitely not! That pizza with the sauce on top. Who knew such a thing existed on a thin crust pizza? I was skeptical about the one we selected, Vodka Sauce, it was so flavorful and cooked perfectly. It is also huge so be prepared. Tons of people coming in to pick up pies to go so I'm guessing they don't deliver. But that didnt deter the numerous people going in and out. My only complaint is the dining area. Way, way too small. And they built a sort of d.i.y. wall to separate the front door from the extra seats. It literally banged VERY loud everytime someone went out. Since we were so close to the door it was very stressful and definitely ruined the atmosphere. In their defense if we had been seated further back it may not have been as bad? I will certainly be back but will only stay if there are seats very far from the door. read more

My wife and I had an excellent experience at Coal Vines. We went on a Thursday night which we found out was half price bottle wine night. So...I'd like to say go on Thursdays - but that means there's one less seat for me. :0) So...maybe Wednesday? If you like Chianti - the Riserva Chianti Classico was delicious. The service was excellent, our waiter was patient and explained the menu to us as it was our 1st time in the restaurant. We received complimentary fried zucchini zoodles which were addictive. We ordered the Spicy Meatball pizza and it was perfect. The crust was perfectly crisp, the heat was just right (spicy, but nothing that will kill you) and plenty of cheese. I personally love seeing fresh parmesan, oregano, and crushed red pepper given as a side to put on your own slice. My wife and I will return many many times. Probably on a Thursday. read more

I loved the garlic cheese bread. It was on point! I'm fatter thinking about how good it was when I had it. Now the pizza was good but I'm still searching for that one pizza place I can't live without. This didn't do it for me. I found the crust to be kind of tough. The pizza was dry. I had them put the sauce under as it would be at other places but maybe that wasn't the way to go. Or maybe I needed more sauce. So giving 4 stars for the garlic bread. 3 for the pizza as it's just not awesome enough to want to go back for me personally. I would try it again one day so all is not lost! read more

Our first (and only) experience was absolutely horrible. First, we were told that they were out of water glasses. Then, we were told they were out of wine glasses. We had to ask them to take our order after sitting there for almost 30 min. One member of our party ordered pasta (because she recently had oral surgery and needed something soft. They brought her chicken with a side of pasta... we asked them to bring her pasta as an entree so she had more to eat and instead of leaving the original dish so she could at least start eating her pasta they took it from her. The rest of the table was done eating by the time her food came out so we just boxed up her food. When we tried to address the issue with the "manager", Kristy, she was very dismissive and defensive. She even went as far as to tell a member of our party to be quiet. I have honestly never experienced such an unprofessional interaction in a restaurant. The owner came out and comped our food, which was kind on his part, but unless he makes some changes to their system and his management staff they won't make it. read more

Went there tonight. I used to live in SL and loved going here. Food was always excellent and it was tonight. However there was a delivery person that parked in one of the two front facing spots with his lights on bright facing the restaurant. We complained as well as 5 other tables that the car's bright lights were disturbing. Waitstaff said they had gotten in trouble for confronting drivers about lights and could not say anything. After more than 10 minutes of these blinding headlights I had to take it upon myself to confront the driver. He was unaware his lights were on bright and turned them off. I came back in to applause. It is sad that management would not let the wait staff take care of this issue and a patron had to. Only come here during the day to not be blinded by the light. Food was excellent and our waiter was great other than saying he couldn't stop the lights from blinding us. read more

If I could give this place 100 stars, I absolutely would! We came in on a Friday night, and the wait was only 10 minutes. We sat at the bar for a few minutes inspecting the menu, and they sat us promptly. We were greeted pretty quickly and ordered appetizers, which was delivered by the manager. The bruschetta it wasn't so hard that it scraped the roof of your mouth like captain crunch. It was absolutely perfect, and that glaze added a perfect touch. It didn't fall apart all over our plate. I got a Caesar salad, which had the perfect amount of dressing and tasted so fresh. The croutons had the perfect crunch as well! The pizzas. Omg. The pizza. I got the Caprese pizza and that may be the best pizza I've ever had in my life. It wasn't rubbery at all, it was soft with a hint of crunch and the balsamic glaze was the perfect addition. I had to take part of it home because it was so much! Rosa was our server and she was amazing! The service from everyone was amazing. She had everything at the table before we even needed it, and she had great suggestions. I really also loved the fact the managers were really getting involved with the tables and also getting involved with helping their staff run food and connecting with guests. The decoration is also very neat and I love the concept of an open kitchen. What's amazing though is that there is glass, which I didn't notice, so you get that feeling of the open kitchen, but you don't hear all of the noise back there. Needless to say, WE WILL BE BACK!!! Bought Pizza from there for the first time. We are from NY and they advertise themselves as NY style Pizza. I don't know any pizzeria in NY where the sauce is placed on top of the cheese. It looks like a crime scene of red! The sauce should be put the dough, then the cheese, then the other toppings. How hard is that sequence??? This is an easy 5 stars! Food - Higher than 5 stars if possible. Service - 5 stars. Location and ambiance - 5 stars. Overall experience - Off the charts! Lets start with the important part, the food. We ordered a Caprese Salad, Garlic Cheese Bread, and a Mediterranean pizza. The salad was easily the fanciest dish that I have ever ordered, and it was backed up with a lot of flavor. The mozzarella was soft and creamy and blended perfectly with the balsamic glaze on top. The tomato was perfectly ripe and completed the salad. The garlic cheese bread was delicious. It was a large piece of French bread served with a bowl of red sauce and devoured by their flavorful cheese. The sauce tasted like love which made me want to eat it by the spoonful. The pizza, oh the pizza! I consider myself a bit of a quality pizza conosuer, and Coal Vines is right up there with the best that DFW as to offer. The crust was crispy, flakey, and perfectly cooked. The cheese was packed with numerous flavors that tickle your palate and make you never want to stop devouring this masterpiece. Sun dried tomatoes filled out the pie perfectly to add a little bit of tang and texture. Great, great pizza! Our server was exquisite and took care of everything. He answered all our questions and never let a drink become empty, even with a full restaurant. The restaurant itself is laid back and a little on the fancier side. Most customers were well dressed making this a perfect date place. Lighting was dim and made for a very enjoyable evening. Since we were there on a Thursday we received half price beer which made my favorite beer, Dallas Blonde, a mere $3. Can't beat pizza and a beer! Friends, when I mention that it was cold on the Coal Vines porch not long ago, let me tell ya: part of the issue may have had something to do with it being four degrees or so outside. And part of it may have had to do with the fact that this place appears to be so popular (and so cozy) that they were flat out of spots to perch us on inside. Rumor here is that this was opened by a former NYC firefighter with a taste for fine pizza pies, and that much certainly seemed to bear fruit: we ate heartily and well, and I fought my way through a giant pepperoni wheel. Let me begin by saying that had I had the choice, I would give Coal Vines 3.8 stars. (More on this later.) Typical Friday night and the family is trying to decide where to dine. In Dallas, if you haven't plugged into a restaurant by 6:30 it can get challenging to find a place. As we debated the merits of various places, our boy said, "Hey let's try Coal Vines." Well, it is one of those places you go by, but it never quite registers. The name really doesn't conjure up visions of Tuscany, and since I lost on vote, that is where we went. Coal Vines is more an Italian restaurant than a pizza place - much more. The decor reminded me of some of our favorite New York Italian haunts complete with a picture and sound track of Ole Blues Eyes playing in the background. The menu is simple and uncluttered and the wine list runneth over. I had a blend: Zinfandel, Carignane, Petite Sirah which combined to make the California Saved. The serving appeared to be about 5 ounces and cost $12.50. In retrospect, I think the value was not there, regarding my wine choice. It was good, but not $12.50 good. For the entrees, I ordered the Penne Vodka replete with a satiable compilation of: red onions sauteed with a vodka tomato cream sauce. I order grilled chicken be added to the mix. Editorial: May I pause here and say I don't care for the food snobs on TV that sit in judgement of aspiring chefs that bust their humps to please these unpleasant cackling food yentas. I also don't believe there are so many 4 and 5 star yelp reviewed restaurants out there. If a restaurant gets 4 stars it better be on first name basis with Zagat and for five, well it is on the Michelin Guide with 3 stars next to it. AND ANOTHER THING! When you are eating in a restaurant - adults, use your quite voice. We really..really, don't want to hear your personal conversations..really. You are not at home. 'nough said. My impression is that Coal Vines fosters a positive environment for the staff. Our waiter seemed to be engaged and knowledgeable. He was prompt and quick with a smile. The food came out sehr schnell and my wife and I both commented that the food was so hot, it left the impression that it been flipped from the chef's frying pan directly to our plates. Don't know if I have ever, any where, tasted food so soon off the fire. My protein had been erroneously mixed with shrimp and the error was addressed promptly. A member of the management staff literally sprinted to our table and offered to comp deserts or drinks. I declined and have always thought it a touch boorish watching those that demand freebees. The owners have placed customer satisfaction high on their list of priorities. Coal Vines handily surpasses Olive Garden, but is not quite in the Piccola Venezia orbit, either. But, I would go again and thought it was a positive experience. Not bad. read more

This is some of our absolute FAVORITE pizza in the metroplex. The crust is out of this world! We've been several times, and learned the best pizza there hands down is the Caprese. Fresh Mozzerella chunks, huge and generous portion of fresh chopped basil, large vine ripened tomato slices, with a balsamic reduction drizzle (sans traditional pizza sauce) ...mouth watering yet?? The italian sausage and pepper one is decent as well - but we get the caprese pizza every time! Closed on Sundays, which is a bummer, and it's a small restaurant that can feel crowded. We are big fans of Coal Vines, made better by several specials: $2.00 Tuesdays: $2.00 off glasses of wine Wednesdays: buy a bottle of wine and get a free pizza Thursdays: 1/2 off select bottles of wine We have taken advantage of the Wednesday special several times. Coal Vines has one of the better thin-crust pizza offerings, and I typically go for the Spicy Meatball: (sliced meatballs with a spicy habanero pizza sauce). Very tasty, and not too spicy. Yum. It's a dark, intimate interior. There's also a room that kind feels like an outdoor (covered) dining room (pseudo alfresco, without actually being outside). Coal Vines can be crowded, and thus noisy, but the pizza (with those crispy burnt bubbles) is worth the wait, or the noise level. Bottom line: One of the better pies in Southlake (but there are a few new places I have yet to try). read more

I've been here twice now, and I was highly impressed both times! Yes, the restaurant is very small, and it gets pretty crowded at peak times. Food is excellent! I've tried the cheese and caprese pizzas and both were very good. The feature salads were delicious and imaginative combinations. And they have an extensive wine selection. Both times I visited, it was on Thursdays when they did the 1/2 price wine. My friends and I split a featured salad, a pizza and a bottle of wine, and with tip, it came to about $40. Not bad! But on a regular price night, that would have been $60, which IMHO is overpriced. So, I'll just stick to Wednesdays (free pizza with wine) and Thursdays (half price wine) and keep coming back! read more

I've been here a couple of times and the experience has been consistently good. Upon seating at your table you are greeted with a complimentary glass of champagne, which is a genius move (...unless you are pregnant or AA). While sipping your champagne you can look at the menu and ask any questions you have. The staff is, if anything else, friendly and eager to help you make this a good experience. I've had both the experience of a waitress that didn't seem to know much about wines (or had a terrible taste) and another one who was very knowledgeable about the topic; either way they both were friendly and helpful. The pizza is the only thing that I've had here (although their menu is small enough that pizzas are already half of the menu) and depending on your pizza style preference you'll find it awesome or saggy (as one of my acquaintances described it). Keep in mind these are brick oven pizzas, so their dough is very thin but not crispy and they lay generous amounts of sauce, which it does make for the "soggy" feeling if you had in mind a thick doughy or a thin crisp crust. read more
