Solid pizza shop! We were over by Buckingham fountain so we stopped by for a late lunch. We shared 2 apps: Foccacia with garlic butter and then another with burrata and kale. Soo good. Fabulous bread. It looks large but it's light and kind of airy. The butter was amazing! Somewhat of a whipped quality with fresh seasoning in it. And we shared 3 pizzas: stracciatella and sausage, nduja, and honey and salami. Everything was good. Ingredients are fresh. Really nice slightly charred flavor on the crust. They're thin slices but you can get full fast! Among 5 of us, we still had leftovers. It wasn't busy when we came in, but shortly after, it seemed folks from a pizza tour stopped in for a bit to try some slices. You do see the oven at the back. Nice touch. Stopped in on a Sunday right at open since there was about 10 of us. We were seated right away and our server was fantastic! She was very friendly and helpful with recommendations. I had the pepperoni jalapeño, which was delicious. The crusts were crispy, pizza thin and not oily. It was perfect! I also tried the meatball pizza, which was very flavorful and the bacon jam, which was absolutely amazing. Cannot wait to go back and have that again. The caprese salad was delicious as well, but the tomato's could've been more fresh. Overall, the experience was great but the pricing is a little high, especially for the apps. This was the perfect spot for comfort food and an extended catchup with a friend. Very casual vibe, lighting is dim. Upon the server's recommendation we ordered the funghi as well as the stracciatella & sausage pizzas. They came out quickly and were full of flavor (read: garlic). I would have taken off one star because the price to size ratio seemed a little high (we were able to each finish one ourselves, though we were hungry). I used to love Coalfire. It was one of the best pizzas in Chicago and a place I recommended often. Unfortunately, my recent experience was incredibly disappointing. My order was supposed to arrive over an hour ago and still hasn't shown up. Delays happen, but the lack of communication and basic service makes the experience frustrating and unacceptable. When you're waiting that long for a simple pizza order, it stops feeling like a mistake and starts feeling like the restaurant simply doesn't care about the customer experience. What's most frustrating is that the quality and consistency that once made Coalfire great no longer seem to be there. The service has declined, and the experience just doesn't match the reputation the restaurant built over the years. Chicago has too many great pizza options to tolerate this level of service. Has anyone else ever gotten sick from this place? I hadn't really eaten a meal all day and a friend suggested this pizza not far from my house. It turns out, though, there is one place in the U.S. that has reserves of nearly pure carbon, making for a very clean-burning coal that gets ovens hotter than ovens burning wood. You can see the difference, too, as there was no visible smoke coming from that coal block. So interesting! But what about the pizza? We tried both the margarita and fungi (multi-mushtoom) pizzas, and they were as good as I'd hoped. I order a curbside pizza through toast and only to be told by the "HOST" that they don't really do curbside and that she "wouldn't/couldn't" leave her post because she was the only one working only to find out she was lying. So glad I stumbled upon this place! Randomly wanted pizza in the middle of the night and was so lucky that this location was walking distance and open! Despite coming in 30 minutes before closing, we got amazing efficient service. They stocked us up with cheese and chili flakes. The pizzas have thin crusts and hit the spot for my pizza cravings! The pizza is very light so it's easy to eat a lot - my partner and I split one pizza but I wish I had gotten my own so I could have eaten more! :P Dave Portnoy gave this pizza shop a 7.4 which I think is low but I can see why because it isn't super crispy, but IMO it doesn't need to be because the dough is so light and airy and the ingredients are fresh. We recently visited Coalfire Pizza for dinner to celebrate a friend's birthday. They easily accommodated a large table without any issues. A friend said that Coalfire pizza has been ranked very highly by many food bloggers and she was absolutely correct. The pizzas were undoubtedly very tasty and there were a lot of options to choose from. I shared the Vegan pesto pistachio pizza with friends and it was just yum! I don't know a lot of places that offer vegan pesto as they usually add diary to it so I'm glad I could enjoy pesto without dairy. They did not have Vegan cheese so we had to get the pizza without cheese but honestly the pesto spread was so rich and creamy, I really did not mind that there wasn't any cheese on my pizza. Our meat lover friends ordered pizza with meatballs and pepperoni and they liked it as well. I'm hoping they open a branch in downtown area as well as traveling to LakeView can be a bit difficult.
