The base is thick and doughy, layered with some mozzarella, a tasty sauce, and slightly charred pepperoni. The tavern style provides a nice contrast. Served cut into squares, it has a solid thin crust that holds up nicely under some melted cheese and loads of flat pepperoni. Please be warned that on a warm and humid day in Chicago Pequod had no AC for being seated inside! I was sweating while having this pizza lol. I had high expectations for this place but it was honestly underwhelming. The pizza had too much cheese, extra costs for adding toppings, and the crust was nothing memorable. Appetizers were good. My group shared jalapeño poppers and the chicken bites, good sized portion chicken and both came with sauce without asking so that was nice. Went here w/family for lunch. Both my kids heard great things about this pizza and it was on their bucket list. My sister made reservations ahead of time, so we got seated quickly on the 2nd floor. We did have to have the large booth cleaned as there was pop on the seats and lots of crumbs in the corners of the booth. Kinda not so cool when we got there at 11:30, shortly after they opened. We ordered a small salad, a large pan pizza (this is not deep dish people...it's more like a round Detroit style pizza) w/just cheese and a large tavern style w/half sausage and half pepperoni w/the pepperoni on top of the cheese. Service was good, if not slow. Of course, you have to wait for the pan pizza, but we knew that. The tavern style came out first, just as we ordered it and piping hot. While the pizza was good, the crust wasn't as crispy as we care for. It was super cheesy...so we got some good cheese pull there. The pan came out and looked good, but when it came to cheese pull, it left a lot to be desired. The caramelized crust is good, but the pan pizza was nothing that blew our socks off. 4++ this place was highly recommended to me from a friend who grew up in the Chicago area now lives in Los Angeles. He says it's the place where the locals eat in Chicago. I definitely had to make a stop here when I was in town for a beer festival a few years back. Now because we were in town for a limited time, we were trying to make things more efficient by getting takeout and bringing it over to a brewery close by. That said, I hope my next visit here is to actually dine in and experience the vibe and service more. The ordering process and takeout process was pretty easy. I have to say. The people were friendly. As for the pizza it's really good. The slices are really big and thick so i could only eat one or two tops. As good as the pizza was, I have a feeling it might be better if you actually sat at the restaurant ate it completely fresh. Pequod's certainly took a popularity bump following The Bear's plug for their deep dish pizza...and rightly so. Their deep dish is amazing. Buuuuuuuuut......... Locals will tell you that it's their thin crust pizza that is the real show stopper. So it's your call. Your options are: 1) Tell your friends that you had deep dish pizza at Pequod's for them to ohh and ahh. 2) Go to Pequod's and get the thin crust and rep like a pro. 3) (my suggestion) go twice and try both and THEN tell your friends the pro tip about the really good stuff. Not for nothin', the staff there were so amazing and patient considering the constant flow of the people and pizzas. Even with the chaos, it's a great place for families (even with little kids), and groups. This place is a winner. Pequod's Pizza was quite a wait, even though it was very early in the day, so I highly recommend a reservation. I was fine waiting for a spot at the bar, however. Speaking of the bar, I got myself a pint of the Golden Road Mango Cart, which did have a fragrance of mangoes. I was a bit annoyed the bartender asked for my ID thinking I was a high schooler (I guess white people in Chicago generally don't have any meaningful relationship with Asians compared to other major cities because this wasn't a one time thing - and I've been to a lot of cities), but at least he tried to smooth it out with a joke. Fine, moving on. I got myself a personal deep dish pizza, since this joint is known for their caramelized crust, although I did wish I got myself a small instead so I can have it delivered in the pan itself. Maybe next time, but I did eat the whole thing. The sauce was more on the bitter and acidic side. The toppings aren't layered and hiding underneath cheese like some other places, which is fine, but I did think it could've used more mushrooms and a more even distribution of toppings considering how thick the bread is. Overall it was worth going out of my way to try it once, as it was highly recommended to me, I'd say it takes #2 so far of all the pizza places I've tried in Chicago. Pequod's is one of THE classic spots for a deep dish in Chicago and we were able to snag at 8:30 PM reservation just a few days before Friday night. I will note that we ended up waiting an additional 20 minutes before actually being seated and the pizzas have up to an hour wait if the restaurant is busy, so we actually got our pizza at about 9:30 PM. Cheese Corners: Some extremely standard triangle shaped cheese bites. Did come out piping hot with a good crunch and cheese stretch, which was nice, but definitely felt like a Sysco-esque appetizer. Deep Dish Pizza: The crust actually had almost a nice crisp at the bottom and a ton of cheese. Tomato sauce had amount of sweetness and they're very generous with the toppings. Arrived at 10:30am on a Friday morning and we were first in line. People started trickling in afterwards and by the time they opened there were maybe 15 in line. Didn't seem like we needed a reservation even though we were asked if had one. The salad was.... a salad, nothing to write home about but completely essential to help cut the richness of the pizza. The pizza, Oh Lordy, what an undertaking. I don't think I'm qualified to judge a deep dish pizza, because I've had it only once or twice before. The crust was fine, the sauce wasn't sweet, the pepperoni was crispy the way I like it, and the best part was the crispy edges. From what I've gathered, this is more of a local favorite, and the vibe of the place matched that. In my opinion, the place is a little divey. Each table has a butcher block sitting on it, I'm assuming as a place for the pizza to rest without burning the tabletop. We didn't order pizza, and the block took up valuable real estate on the two-top that we were seated at. It was extremely cold outside that day and upstairs was very drafty. We watched as a larger group shied away from the corner booth, stating that it was freezing by the window. They returned shortly thereafter since the booth was the only available spot large enough to accommodate their group. My husband ordered a bottled beer, and I a canned cider. We also ordered a meatball sub with hot peppers and cheese to share. It was meant to be a light snack before we went for massages around the corner, but it turned out to be a very healthy portion. It was enough that neither of us finished our half of the sub. It was definitely shareable. The service was okay and atmosphere was very casual. We were recommend this location from a local during our stay and so glad we tried it! I had mixed emotions about trying the Chicago deep dish pizza as some mentioned the crust wasn't to their liking based off what we are accustomed to in California. This PLACE DID NOT DISAPPOINT! We tried the basic deep dish pizza with pepperoni to go and it was delicious! The sauce was tasty and thick, while the burned edges gave it an added flavor unlike any pizza we have ever tried. The bread is not a "pie" crust but more a fluffy, thick bread. I do recommended you order ahead as it's a 45-50 minute process to cook the masterpiece. It was well worth wait. They have two entrances for this location. One is the pick-up and go side while the entrance closest to the street corner, is the sit-down restaurant. I did notice people waiting outside and when I walked in to see the vibe, they had a small bar area and had several high tables to sit at. Our first family meal in Chicago unfortunately was a completely sad experience. After arriving a little late into O'hare we yelp'd a pizza spot to hopefully check off and satisfy the deep dish pizza portion of our visit as we didn't wanna do the standard Giordano's or Lou Malnati's which we've done too many times already. First off we though, hey, let's see if we can order the pizza in advance as we drive our rental car into the city as it takes 40-45 minutes usually to cook. So my wife called a few times and no answer. The message referred to their website so she looked it up and joined the "wait list" to reserve a seat and ordered a pie online 20 minutes before we were to arrive thinking hey we'll save us and them time. The longer we sit at a table and wait is time they won't be able to seat another party. Well that's at least what we thought! When we arrived we spoke to a young lady at the front area and she told us that once we ordered a pizza online we cannot eat it there. Okay I understand people trying to cheat the system by ordering a pizza online then arriving and skipping the line that's waiting patiently to be seated. But we also joined the "wait list" and there was only one other party standing there to be seated. We asked if we can be seated AFTER them. She didn't look like she understood nor seemed to care about having us at the restaurant so she went to get I guess someone that's senior to her. Some guy walked from the back kitchen and just told us that we can't eat at the restaurant after ordering online...no introduction...no greeting...just a denial like we're a disorderly bunch. There was no raised voices on our part just trying to find a solution and a table to sit and enjoy our pizza. The guy was a complete ahole and dismissive. Girl didnt seem to understand they have a wait list on their website and they didn't answer their phone. It was just a complete head scratching moment. We ended up just taking our pizza 20 miles into the city where we ate it after parking, checking in on our hotel bed. You can probably imagine how well that went. We often have out-of-town and foreign guests to host and show off our city to. We always include a deep dish pizza meal for their experience, and usually at Lou Malnati's. Always a great experience, especially the branch in downtown Naperville- consistently good. And Lou's really makes the best salad than anywhere! Sometimes for a potluck contribution I just pick up a Lou's salad, guaranteed to make everyone happy.
