I'll preface this review that it's 5 stars if you sit outside and take in the fresh air and sites. 4 stars for being seated inside. I'm not sure I would have liked to be inside. It was dark and way too cold for a summer afternoon. This place piqued our interest as we saw it was rated top in the world and supposedly better than deep dish. High expectations no doubt. We had the fig jam prosciutto pizza which was very good. A friend had the arugula and prosciutto which was okay. We even had some left over for the next day reaffirming how much we liked it. I've had some really amazing pizzas around the world and US of the likes of Argentina, Italy, Austria, Moab, Long Beach and New Jersey. I'm not sure this would fit in my personal list of favorites but I'm not an expert or voter either. But I am an average consumer/patron. :) read more

We came with a party of six and had a reservation for six, but our table felt more appropriate for four people. The restaurant itself is spacious, so it was disappointing that we felt so cramped. We started with the calamari, which I really enjoyed. The batter was light and crispy without feeling greasy. We also shared the seafood pizza, duck prosciutto pizza, cup and char pepperoni pizza, and the gnocchi. All three pizzas were delicious, with very thin and crispy crusts. The seafood pizza came with a soup or broth that you could pour over it, which was nice and it also came with so much seafood. The cheese was slightly firm, but the pizza was still flavorful and enjoyable. The duck prosciutto had a noticeable duck aroma, melty cheese, and a rich, savory flavor. The cup and char pepperoni pizza was satisfying as well, especially the pepperoni with its crisp, curled edges. The gnocchi was another standout. It was satisfyingly chewy with a great texture and bold flavor. We finished with the tiramisu, which was light, balanced, and not overly sweet. We made a 12:15pm lunch reservation on a Tuesday and chose to sit inside to escape the extreme heat outside. They do have great outdoor seating right on the Chicago River, but the indoor dining room was comfortable and a welcome relief from the weather. The place was absolutely packed for the lunch rush, so the service was average, but the food was amazing. They have some items marked gluten-free on the menu, and our server confirmed that every pizza on the menu can be made GF. While it is not a dedicated gluten-free facility, they take great precautions to limit cross-contamination, which gave me peace of mind after informing them I have celiac disease. We started with the apple kale salad and then shared a duck prosciutto with red sauce pizza on a gluten-free crust. The crust is a European-style blend where the gluten is removed from the flour, and it was really, really good. Before visiting this restaurant I heard a lot of great things about it and after the visit it all made sense. I decided to have my birthday brunch here and it became the best decision I ever made. I know they known pizza but the French toast was phenomenal! It featured a house made dough that turned out to be both fluffy and buttery. Stopped in for lunch with friends after the Chicago boat tour. Neither of us have had pizza from here before. We are glad we tried it the pizzas were delicious. We ordered 2 pizzas for the 5 of us and that was enough for everyone to get their fill. One was a sausage and pepperoni pizza, I think it's called a carnivore. The other pizza was 2 kinds of pepperoni one regular and the other tasting like chorizo. It had a little bit of a kick but not too much to be over powering. Our first girl dinner of our Chicago trip was Robert's Pizza and Dough. My friend had found their restaurant online and so we were all really excited to check it out. It was maybe a 15 minute walk from our hotel which isn't anything at all but it is by the water so it's pretty cold. When we arrived we were able to get seats without reservations which was nice. Between 6 girls we order calamari and meatballs to share along with the Cali Itali pizza and Carne. Umm the food was so delicious, the meatballs had so much flavor and really huge definitely a good little share. Then the calamari was perfect, not oily and super crunchy, I haven't had good calamari in forever so this hit the spot. Our pizzas were perfect, the dough had good flavor and the toppings were just the right amount. It's not Chicago's tavern style or deep dish but this was by far the best pizza we had all trip. Note, the bathroom is down a spooky hall but it was really nice. The people here were so friendly and the food is superb. I bet during Summertime this place is just beautiful to eat outside! Had an awesome experience here in River East. The weather couldn't have been better, and their outdoor seating really made the whole meal feel like a perfect Chicago moment. UPDATE: I added a star because our experience was acknowledged by the restaurant management. Service matters and while we didn't need anything fixed or reimbursed, I so appreciate that level of focus on customer satisfaction. We got it delivered via DoorDash as we heard great things about Robert's gluten free crust and we had someone visiting who eats GF. The sauce was excellent, but we were disappointed by the lack of meat on a carne pizza (it was light cheese, but we thought that was fine) and our crust was so hard and chewy that we literally couldn't power through the outer edge of the crusts after eating past the toppings. The salad was fine, not remarkable. I didn't see anywhere on the site that mentioned the size of the pizza so we gambled a bit that we would have enough for 3 adults, but we had enough since we didn't love it. It was our first time and maybe we would try again without GF, but it's a very expensive pizza so maybe take that into consideration. read more

This was one of the food highlights on my recent trip to Chicago! The neighborhood is beautiful this time of year, so if you can I recommend requesting outdoor reservations. They do fill up quick and walk in wait times were over an hour. Service was standard, we did feel ourselves looking around for our server a little bit, but the food was delicious! I love Robert's! The crust is perfection: airy with a little crunch. I've been here multiple over the course of several years (since they first opened), and I've loved every pizza. My favorite topping is caramelized onion! I haven't been there for brunch yet, but those pizzas also look delicious. Pizzas are fairly priced, ingredients are super fresh, great ratios of all pizza components, and they're consistently made well without variability. I can always count on a good pizza from Robert's! This is not the pizza place you bring guests who are looking for iconic Chicago style pizza. However, this is a place where you go to get one of the best pizzas in Chicago. It's not deep dish, but it is delicious pizza. Variety is great, from white artisan style pizza to traditional red sauce pizza. My favorites are still the Margherita (Rita) and the Pepperoni (Cup and Char). Go to happy hour if you want to try different toppings since slices (1/8 of a pie) of the traditional pizzas are only $8. They do not offer varied topping on Whole pizzas on the regular menu. You will need to order separate pizzas. Get there early since happy hour is very busy and hard to get seats. They also offer good drinks at a discounted price. To truly enjoy this restaurant, make a reservation for outdoor seating specifically asking to be on the dock. Offers nice views of the river, and away from the main walkway. We have tried different menu items like the meatballs, and short rib pastas. They were just OK, but at least this restaurant offers items for those not wanting just pizza. This place is all about the PIZZA. I believe it's rated as one of the Top 10 Pizzas in the US. The rating is well deserved. read more

Some of our favorite pizzas include the Fennel, Carne (both with house made fennel sausage which is fire!), and the Duck Prosciutto. If we want leftovers, we'll get two pizzas between the two of us. If we want to feel healthy, happy, and not have leftovers, we'll get one pizza and a starter salad like the Apple Hazelnut Salad or the Beet & Kale Salad, both which are delicious! My spouse loves the high quality local beer list and I love the creative and delicious cocktail list, both with seasonal rotations. You can't go wrong! Second, the location and ambiance are incredible! Located on a waterway inlet from Lake Michigan, the outdoor space and water facing indoor bar offer stunning views of the water and treed-in area. The indoor space is nice and welcoming as well, just not as visually stunning. For a visual curb appeal and romantic date, this is the spot for you!
