We were in town and met up with some friends on a Friday. We got there early to beat the rush, which gave us time to settle in and start with a round of Bloody Marys. They were tasty. For an appetizer, we shared the Herb & Cheese Flatbread. It was so flavorful and disappeared fast. After the Bloody Marys, we switched things up with a couple rounds of PBRs. My husband and I split the L.F.D. pizza, which has a pesto base and hot sauce. I love that thin crust. And it actually packs real flavor. Every bite was delicious. Penny took care of us and did an outstanding job. She was friendly, attentive and patient while we were busy catching up when we were supposed to be deciding what we wanted. The service is wonderful, the food is flavorful, the TVs are on ESPN, and the subtle music puts Coals over the top. You will be dancing in your seat at the smokiness of the meats & crispy bacon on the Buchertown Pizza which is my favorite. The lunch specials are top tier! You can add a house salad or soup to any lunch for $2-3 bucks. Seems like the salad would be basic for the price but it's far from that. Full of fresh veg, yummy diced mozzarella, home made croutons and I could drink the balsamic vinaigrette. I even put a little salad on my pizza! My only complaint is the Caesar was listed at $9 on the menu but we were charged $11. There could be a split plate charge we didn't see so I didn't say anything to the bartender. Back to visit Coals and after this visit I am unsure what took us so long. Their pizza is delicious! Thin crust and fluffy yet crispy crust. We loved The Waverly (so unique) and added both a cheese and create your own pepperoni pizza. The pepperoni is thick and delicious, just a better quality that I'm used to. We got a seat right away. On a Friday night the crowd was plentiful. The space is tight between tables - thankfully not in a way that we heard conversations but uncomfortable for those of us with larger hips to squeeze through. Some patio seating is also available. Our server was friendly, attentive and helpful with the specials. Check out their menu beforehand. Create your own is more economical. Specialty pizzas are a bit expensive but great to share with another person. Party room available! We absolutely LOVE Coals, it's definitely one of our favorite restaurants here in town. We even always make it a point to go to Coals and grab a pizza and a few cold beers when we are traveling since they have a location in the Airport. Even though I've been countless times, I've have never had an opportunity to stop in for Happy Hour (Monday - Friday 4:30 - 5:30 PM) and was stoked we got the opportunity last Friday. They have some awesome deals (picture included with details) including their Sangria Pitchers which are only $25 (Reg $38) Now don't get me wrong, their pizza always knocks it out of the park and I was pumped for that too, BUT their Red Sangria is my absolute FAVORITE! If you have not had it, it is a must try for sure! Scott, the Bar Manager (he could have another Title I am not aware of) created this delicious recipe himself, so be sure to tell him how much you like it once you try it. Scott greeted us as soon as we sat at the bar, and brought over some waters. We ordered the Pitcher of Sangria as well as the Herb & Cheese Flat Bread to start. We were in no hurry and after a while ordered our pizza which was the "Waverly" (Prosciutto, mozzarella and gorgonzola cheese, finished with fig jam, parmesan cheese and a balsamic reduction) which is always delicious. Our other favorite is the "Chef's Favorite Brownsboro" which is the traditional Brownsboro (Margherita pepperoni and fresh mozzarella) but adds banana peppers, mascarpone/ricotta cheese and their house-made chili honey drizzle) so we trade off every other time we go so we both get what we want, but sometimes we also each get our own pizza too. One of the things I like most about Coals is their array of crust options .... regular, gluten free and cauliflower. I have regularly ordered their gluten free and cauliflower crusts (when we both get our own pizza's as mentioned above) and they are excellent choices, especially for someone like me who has a wonky stomach has to be careful with what I eat. Now with that being said I can actually order the regular pizza crust and not immediately feel sick afterwards, I am not sure if this has something to do with the fact that they use King Midas Flour or not but either way it is really nice to be able to enjoy regular pizza sporadically! read more

I did a take out order and the location is easy to get to. There is even a parking spot to pick up orders. It's a cozy homey feel when you walk in. There is a bar you can sit at or there's tables available. It's more of a sit down restaurant than something like a dominos. Their pizza is high quality and absolutely delicious. We had a wave pizza book and tried coals for a pepperoni pizza. We also heard they had wonderful buffalo wings. They did!! Perfectly seasoned. We tried the tomato basil soup and ordered the Middletown pizza which included pepperoni, Italian sausage and mushrooms. I will eat pretty much any pizza with gusto - I seek out superior pizza, but also have Tombstone in my freezer. So while visiting Louisville, Coals looked like a great place to try. I love that all the pizzas are named after different neighborhoods, as I used to live in Louisville years ago. The pizza is very thin crust, which I prefer over thick crust, and the toppings were good. We ordered one plain cheese (for kiddos) and one Brownsboro. I also had a Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale which was excellent! The bottom of both pizzas, however, was completely black, from end to end. I did not mention to our server (who was lovely) because we were on a bit of a time constraint, but in my book, that's objectively burnt. That's one thing with pizza that I can't get past, and interfered with my enjoyment of the toppings. (Note: this isn't the "char" that is a hallmark of a good Neopolitan pizza- this pizza was perfectly cooked on top with zero char, and completely black on the bottom). Maybe that's how all the pizzas are here, as both of ours were black on the bottom. If you're sensitive to burnt crust, I would suggest asking for your pizza to come out slightly less done. read more

Great service at the bar from Jason on a very busy Saturday night. My wife and I both had the margarita pizza, crust and toppings were great although a little bit soggy in the middle. 6.7 on the Portnoy scale. The bar area has TVs to watch the game decent selection of beer and wine as well as good looking margaritas being made. And the night we were there lots of families and at least one youth baseball team in the back room. Overall great place for Saturday night to grab a bite have a brew and watch the game. read more

Great pizza! We went for lunch on a chilly winter day. We shared the buffalo wings and stuffed mushrooms to start. The wings were crispy and really good. We got the buffalo sauce on the side - we're dippers - and it was great. The mushrooms were not breaded which we liked a lot. They had lots of cheesy goodness in an Alfredo sauce. Then we shared the Brownsboro and Clifton pizzas. The crust is excellent with good flavor and the perfect amount of chewiness. Loved both pizzas and would definitely get them again. They had the perfect ratio of toppings to cheese. The restaurant is really pretty with huge glass walls and super tall industrial ceilings. Unfortunately the gorgeous windows made it freezing. I'm not sure they could have done anything about it so I'll just wait until it warms up a bit. read more

Having some unplanned on time to kill before an appointment I decided to just do early dinner before vs after. I arrived at Coals at 4 to learn they didn't open until 4:30. So car windows down chill time til they opened. I sat at the bar and was promptly greeted, drink order taken, and menu brought. I decided on the large wedge salad and stuffed mushrooms (appetizer) along with cheese breadsticks (most of which I planned to take home). The wedge salad was crisp, cold, fresh, and full of Gorgonzola cheese, diced tomatoes, adequate bacon, and a few thin sliced radishes. I ate about half and saved half for work lunch tomorrow. The stuffed mushrooms came out piping hot and full of cheesy goodness, small mushrooms but very good, ate a few and packed up the rest. My teen and I ate a few pieces of the thin cut cheese bread with marinara once home. My water was refilled several times while dining and service was friendly and efficient. I arrived at a non busy time but it worked out perfectly to fill my unplanned on time gap! I'll definitely return here! Coals service was so abysmal that I wondered if they were intentionally trying to set a record for the slowest and most indifferent staff. An online order was placed at 5:30, and we were given a 6:00 pick-up and arrived at 5:55, only to wait for one hour for an order that had already been prepared and was pulled off a warming shelf above the pizza oven. Thirty minutes were spent as the only person waiting to pay Jason. Save yourself the misery and go anywhere else. Had dinner with a friend on a recent Wednesday night. We were immediately seated, water delivered to the table. Drink orders were taken quickly. I had a Woodford Old Fashioned which was excellent and reasonably priced at $7.50. We ordered a half Brownsboro and half Burrata Special. The waitress could not describe the special or answer any questions about it; but to her defense it was the first day on the menu board and we were done of the first customer of the evening. There were many different types of pizza ordered and we all did a lot of sampling of the different types. We also sampled the buffalo chicken wings and baked mushrooms. We are on a pizza evaluation tour throughout Louisville. Although Coals was not our favorite, that still belongs to the Post, the pizza was outstanding. Very nice thin crust. We got a red pizza with sausage and the Bardstown with a balsamic drizzle. I thought the sausage pizza was really tasty. I could have eaten more (see below). My wife is not a red sauce person so the Bardstown was perfect for her and she loved it. She ordered it blonde - she does not prefer the well done style of Coals. One issue might be the quantity of pizza for the price. A hungry person can easily eat an entire $15 to $18 pizza. That being said, going out to eat has gotten pricey. Go to Coals. My husband says this is favorite pizza joint. Tonight we shared the Middletown pizza and an appetizer of stuffed mushrooms. And he had an alcoholic drink. All of that totaled just over $40. It's very busy on a Friday night. The ambiance is like a sports bar in that there are several TVs showing different sports. There's lots of seating, even at the bar and outside during nice weather.
